OCEAN CITY – Alexis Harris ended her high school basketball career with a bang - and took it to the bank with one memorable buzzer-beating three-point shot - to lead Team Baruffi to a 65-46 win over Team Douglass in the Just 4 Wheels Girls Classic at Prime Events All Star Saturday.

Harris, a senior from Atlantic City High School, scored a game-high 20 points, including four field goals from well beyond the arc, and flashed the kind of play-making and ball-handling skills that should serve her well as she continues her basketball career at Palm Beach State, a Division I junior college in South Florida.

"This is really just the beginning for me," said Harris. "It's sad (that her high school career is over), but I'm just glad that I got to be known as one of the best in the area through high school. I just love everything about the game."

The most interesting - some would say most necessary - change would create a parochial-only football league to start in 2016.

If approved, St. Joseph, St. Augustine Prep and Holy Spirit would leave the Cape-Atlantic League for football. Public schools could still play parochial schools in non-league games, but public schools would no longer have to keep getting hammered in league play by non-public schools that can recruit and draw players from throughout the region. Holy Spirit, St. Joe and St. Augustine are a combined 59-10 against CAL public schools the past three seasons.

Such a call from Aunt Tess is the local equivalent of a command performance at Buckingham Palace. You dare not refuse, lest you be stricken off the list forever.

“What’s got her upset?” I asked.

While I know and appreciate that language evolves, there are basic some rules to it, and in the cases when these businesses are marketing toward kids, I find it even more intolerable.

Why do we need to call a social group designed for kids a Kids Klub instead of a Kids Club? Don’t they have enough trouble figuring out when to use C or K appropriately anyway? There are hundreds of others that add insult to injury. Klub 4 Kids, Kiddie Korner, Kidz Club and Kidz Klubhouse are just a few examples.

The St. Augustine Prep boys and the Mainland Regional girls were the biggest winners of the day, capturing their respective varsity eight races. But several other schools - Atlantic City, Cedar Creek, Absegami - also had their moments in the (not-so-bright or warm) sun.

Lamberti has owned the building for 25 years and has faced repeated washouts on the underside of the building during coastal storms, his architect Arthur Ponzio, Jr. said.

Ponzio made an informal presentation to the board at its 4 p.m. work session, and received favorable responses from commissioners.

“He has been Band-Aid-ing it for a while. It has reached the point that to be competitive and operate and maintain a beautiful facility, he must demolish the building,” Ponzio said.

Wilkinson & Sons Construction, Inc. of Absecon for reconstruction of the old City Hall on Washington Avenue.

According to city engineer Ed Walberg of Remington, Vernick and Walberg, there were five qualified companies who submitted bids within $238,000, from Wilkinson’s low bid to a high-bid of $2,498,870 from M.B. Markland Contracting Company.

Although there was a miscalculation on one line item in Wilkinson’s tabulation for one of two flood barriers, Wilkinson confirmed that the total base bid amount was correct, Walberg said.
