With Furman Park closed for Measure S renovations, I'm doing a lot more dog-walking on my neighborhood streets. And recently, Max and I were bombarded by walnuts, which was strange, because we were walking under a pine tree!

There are several walnut trees in our neighborhood. I know this because the squirrels collect the nuts, bury them in our yard, and then forget where they left them. I continually find small walnut trees growing in my yard.

But it turns out that crows love walnuts too! Max and I encounter hordes of crows every day—in the yards, in the nearby trees, or flying away as soon as they see Max. Often, there are 20-30 crows, cawing with excitement.

But walnuts have to be cracked to enjoy. And the crows do this by taking the walnut to the top of a nearby tree and dropping it, where it hits the sidewalk or the street and cracks open. (And makes a mess on the sidewalks.)

And that's why walking Max has turned into an adventure of dodging walnuts.

In the November 2016 election, Downey residents approved a sales tax increase of ½ percent. Part of its purpose is to improve our city parks. This week, work started on Furman Park, where I regularly walk.

I'm looking forward to the improvements. But mostly, I'm looking forward to getting my park back in a few months.

It's still August and I'm not ready to think about preparing for winter yet. But these geese have already put their plans into action and are heading south. The downside to a corner lot is that you have very little backyard space, and you have a lot of what seems like wasted space facing the streets. But this household has turned that wasted space into a magnificent kitchen garden, producing enough veggies to last them all summer.

And, it provides a scenic stop on my regular dog-walking path.
It's that time of year again, when the jacaranda blossoms turn neighborhoods into clouds of purple...and cars and sidewalks get stained with the same.
These trees were on my mind when I answered a recent Downey survey about trees. Which is more important to me, flowers or shade? I choose flowers, and I'm looking forward to the new flowering trees that will be planted in Downey over the next year.

One of my favorite annual Downey events is the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Downey Cemetery. The format stays the same from year to year, but some things do change. I love to see the veterans standing up to be recognized, although the number of WWII vets has declined considerably since I started coming. I love the 21-gun salute, which was missing this year. I love the speeches and the melancholy sound of Taps at the end of the ceremony. And every year, I love watching the kids from local schools perform.

This year, kids from my alma mater Spencer Elementary School performed one of my favorites, "God Bless the USA".

And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

These kids are standing proud, together with each other and with us, to support our veterans and our country.

God bless the USA!

From the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Downey Cemetery, May 27, 2019.

"It's hard to play [taps] sometimes because of if you think too much about it, you can easily crack a note or worse. But famously, the bugler that played taps at President Kennedy's funeral cracked a note but no one cared.

"I couldn't play taps for my dad's funeral. I just knew I wouldn't be able to get through it. I had my best friend, Larry, who's a fabulous trumpet player, play it. I've been doing this Memorial Day service in Downey for eleven years. It kind of rolls up on you. It doesn't hit you in the first couple of notes, but once you get going and you start to realize everyone's listening and everyone within themselves is thinking what it means to them. And if you let that get to you, you'll screw it up.

"I played taps for my boss a few years ago. I worked for a company that built trumpets down in Anaheim. When I left, we didn't part on the best of terms, but when he died the family asked me to play at his memorial. I was so grateful that they did. I was playing and handling it alright even though it was a hot dry summer day. I was handling it until I looked up and saw his urn and a large photo of him. That's when I distinctly heard his voice right behind me saying, 'Don't screw it up!' And so I cracked a note. It's hard to separate yourself from that emotion.

"There is an organization called Bugles Across America that is all volunteer. Their mission is to make sure that no vet has a funeral without a taps player."

Kaiser Permanente in Downey is expanding its hospital. Groundbreaking was last summer. You can see part of the beginning construction here. This week, they brought in this massive crane to lift the steel girders used in the construction. It took them three days to put it together and make it operational.

This morning as I was riding to work, I spotted the crane lifting some of the ground floor structures. The shape of the beams reminded me of three other crosses that were lifted up on another Friday some 2000 years ago. Today, Christians around the world celebrate Good Friday, the sacrifice of our Savior for the sins of the world. This image helped me to stop for a moment and praise God for doing for us what we couldn't do ourselves. Ephesians 1:7

A few years ago, my friends teased me when they caught me relaxing on the couch, eating ice cream and watching an exercise video. (Seriously, I was checking it out for future use!) I was reminded of that moment when I saw these three friends socializing on the leg press machine in the Kiwanis Fitnes Area at Furman Park.

Frankly, I'm tired of the rain. And the cold. I'm really really looking forward to spring! But, one redeeming aspect of the rain and cold has been snow in our local mountains.

The snow views have peaked out at me and surprised me when I least expect them. Also, when I don't have a camera, or when I'm driving and can't take a picture. And when I intentionally venture out to get a picture, the clouds are back and the snow is hiding.

Finally, the snow and the opportunity came together a few weeks ago at the dog park at Rio San Gabriel Park. From here, you can see how low the snow is. At the far right, you can see Mt. Baldy (officially Mount San Antonio). At just over 10,000 feet, it is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, as well as the highest point in Los Angeles County.

We are visiting our son, daughter-in-law, and new grandson in Florida. Now that our children are having children, we are being asked about things that happened when our children were younger. First words, first steps, school work, and so on. My problem is that the older I get, the more my memory is becoming a blur. I have a few memory snapshots of my children growing up that I can still call up. But even though I lived everyday with them, there are years of living I can't remember.

But what I do have are lots of pictures of my children. Each one of those pictures brings back memories of the events that surrounded our taking the picture. I can remember Christmases, school plays, birthdays, and just being family. These days I love pulling out a pile of pictures and going through them to bring up those memories.

For nine years, Downey Daily Photos has been publishing photos and stories of our Downey community. These photos and stories are meant to bring to your attention events and people that, put together, make up a small part of the life of Downey.

But maybe these events or the people in them have become a blur in your memory. This post is to encourage you to take a look back at some of our posts to remember something that is getting a little blurry lately. (For example, do you remember when Downey was a host city for a group of foreign athletes?)

The holidays are over, and it isn't just the holiday decorations that are feeling a little deflated. The busy-ness and excitement of the holidays are over, and most of us are back to school or work.

If you google "post-holiday blues", you'll find lots of articles explaining the causes and suggesting remedies. The two remedies I like best come from 6 Ways to Beat the Post-Holiday Blues. First, simply take the time to remember and reflect upon what you loved best about the holidays. And second, schedule in time with your friends.

And if possible, combine the two by meeting friends at Porto's for an early breakfast and lots of fun memories.

On Monday morning, I went by to see Downey's entry in the 2019 Rose Parade. The workers were putting the finishing touches on this year's float.

Downey is one of only eight cities that enter floats in the parade. That's pretty remarkable when you consider how many cities there are in the Los Angeles area.
It's not the prize that matters.

Last weekend, I passed this house, where Reuben was putting the finishing touches on his nativity display. This display won last year's award for "Best Religious Display," but Reuben said he hadn't even had time to enter the contest this year. He was just glad to get all the lights connected so that it would light up that night.

At first, I thought there was some sort of protest. But when I got closer, I discovered girls from the Downey High School KIWIN'S club, cheerfully raising money for the Thirst Project. For a dollar a Krispy Kreme donut, I can help them raise money to provide a community with safe drinking water.

The Thirst Project mission is to build a socially-conscious generation of young people who will end the global water crisis. These girls are off to a good start!

This evening, I passed two homes that were already decked out in Christmas lights, and it's not even Thanksgiving yet. Personally, I prefer to have my full three weeks of giving thanks, before I start to think about decorating for Christmas.

But earlier today, I passed this silly pumpkin almost hidden in the branches, and realized that it's not just Christmas that encroaches on Thanksgiving. The squeeze comes from the other side, too, with leftover Halloween peeking out when you least expect it!

Downey Daily will be nine years old next month. That's over 3,000 posts, nearly every day, mostly of Downey. Joan, Allison, and I started Downey Daily with the thought that it would force us to practice and improve our photography skills, with the added benefit of learning more about our city.

And we have. We've learned about Downey's history, going on history walks and poking around the old Rancho Los Amigos site. We've enjoyed more yard art than I ever imagined possible.

And along the way, we've met many wonderful people and made lots of new friends. Downey Daily has been our excuse to step into your lives and you've welcomed us with open arms. When Allison went back to school, her dad Steve took her place and added a new dimension by sharing your stories through Humans of Downey.

And we're finally running out of ideas. Keeping up with a picture a day is getting harder and harder. We're not ready to quit, but, like the two fellas above, we're ready to sit a while, go back to the beginning, enjoy what Downey has to offer—and some of the time, take a picture and blog about it.

So, we're slowing down. We won't be posting every day anymore, but hopefully, you'll enjoy our posts more when they come.

Since we are further south than the New England states, our autumn colors come a little later in the year. But they come just the same, as verified by these red leaves. Soon, the whole tree will be filled with brightly colored leaves signaling they are ready to fall. Then this homeowner will be out each weekend for a while raking up the leaves off his lawn just like homeowners in Vermont. Oh, except, we don't have to worry about getting the leaves up before our lawns are covered with snow.

Enjoy the brisk cool mornings, the warm sunshine afternoons, and beautiful sunsets, Downey. This is a great place to live.

A trend I've noticed for several years is homes that set a table up outside their homes to hand out Halloween candy to the trick-or-treaters. I see the advantages of this setup. Seeing the groups come up to your house. Not having to continuously open and close your door. And in the case of this home, they invited other neighbors to come over and spend the evening. They served dinner and sat around in a circle for good conversation. A great way to make new memories.

How has your Halloween changed through the years?

These ghostly figures are celebrating the season around this tree. If it looks like there are more fallen leaves than you'd expect, you're right. I was away this weekend to an area where they actually have fall colors!

I came across these fun pumpkins sitting on a back wall along an alley. Seeing them somehow reminded me of the children's poem Humpty Dumpty—hopefully these pumpkins will be able to stay on the wall.
"Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love — that makes life and nature harmonise... Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."

Yesterday, I posted about the concert we went to at the Downey Theater on Saturday. On Sunday, we went to a concert at Redeemer Covenant Church of Downey. It was a group of young performers from Brazil. These young performers were filled with energy and we got to witness them display their talent in several ways. There was dancing, singing, and instrumentals. It was a great experience.

The performers are students at Art and Social Transformation in Brazil. This program takes any young artist, especially from low income families or at risk communities and develops their talent to meet their full potential. At the end of summer each year, certain pupils that have shown that they can make a living by using their talents are chosen to participate at Cal Arts Annual 3-week CAPSA program in Los Angeles. You can read about the program here. Afterwards, they travel throughout the United States giving concerts. Redeemer Covenant Church is one of those places that is chosen each year.
