Drawing for Childen is a free drawing program for children with many nice options. You can draw with many different pens, you can put stamps on your drawings, create all sort of text effects, and much more. The program is suitable for very young children and has a child mode especially for them. But it also provides lots of fun to older kids. It is used by hundreds of thousands of kids all over the world. The best way to see what is possible is to simply download it and install it. Remember, it is free.

Drawing for Children runs on basically any PC and any windows version (95 till Vista). For more information, see the readme file. The newest version 2.2 (dated Dec 26, 2007) adds support for different picture sizes and has a better settings form.

Frequently Asked Questions

I put the program in Child Mode but now I cannot change the settings any more, nor can I quit the program. Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S (that is, hold the Ctrl, Alt and Shift key and press S) to show the settings form. Here you can change the mode again. You can also use Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Q to quit the program.
The pictures don't print or the prints are gray-scale.
This happens on certain (old?) printers. A work-around is the following. Click on the pair of scissors in the sketch list. Pull a box around the picture with the mouse (or around a part of the picture you want to print). The picture is now put on the clipboard. Now open another drawing program (like the standard Paint) or open Word. Use Ctrl+V to paste the picture. Print it from there.

Sebran's ABC - Free Software For Kids

It's never too early for your child to become familiar with letters and numbers. Sebran's ABC's colorful pictures, pleasant music, and gentle games teach letters, numbers, simple math, and rudiments of reading.
The program teaches using either Afrikaans, Bahasa Indonesian, Breton, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Samoan, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Turkish, Swahili or Swedish (in Swedish, the droll zebra gracing the main screen is called "sebran").
The six simpler exercises display four possible answers. Choose the right one and it becomes a smile; an error gets a frown and a chance to try again. The How Many? counting game introduces the numbers from 1 to 9. These are used in the Add, Subtract, and Multiply matching games, which each function at two levels of difficulty. In Pick A Picture, one of four pictures matches a word; First Letter offers four possible letters completing a word. Your child can employ the skills gained in these exercises to play Memory, Word Memory, or Hangman. Finally, the ABC Rain, Letter Rain, and 1+2 Rain games help train little fingers in using the keyboard.

Sebran's ABC is freeware.
2006-09-01: Version 1.46 of Sebran was released. Includes an option to use only lower case letters, and fixes a bug in the music playback. Writes settings to the registry instead of Sebran.ini.
You can enter your own word lists to use in the Hangman game. Just create a text file in the Sebran program folder (usually C:\Program files\Sebran), called hangman.txt, where you enter one word or short phrase per line. You can use Notepad to create this file. The next time you run Sebran, this list will be used instead of the built-in lists. A maximum of 200 words or phrases can be entered.

The PosteRazor [Make your own poster]

The PosteRazor cuts a raster image into pieces which can afterwards be printed out and assembled to a poster.

Input image formats

All image formats that FreeImage can read should be usable as input for the PosteRazor:

BMP, DDS, Dr. Halo, GIF, ICO, IFF, JBIG, JPEG/JIF, KOALA, LBM, Kodak PhotoCD, PCX, PBM, PGM, PNG, PPM, PhotoShop PSD, Sun RAS, TARGA, TIFF, WBMP, XBM, XPM

Image types

PosteRazor can handle the following image color types:

Monochrome, Grayscale, 4 Bit palette, 8 Bit palette, 24 Bit RGB, 48 Bit RGB (only via TIFF and PNG), 32 Bit CMYK (only via TIFF)

32 Bit RGBA images can be loaded, but are transformed to 24 Bit RGB by "merging" them with a white background.

Because people around the world invented so many different dimension units, PosteRazor supports quite a few:

Printer page layout

The page size and orientation of the printer where the poster will be printed can be set manually or selected one from the following list of predefined formats:

DIN A4, DIN A3, Legal, Letter, Tabloid

The size limit for one page is 5 meters (16.4 feet), which is the maximum that PDF allows.

Poster size

The size of the final poster can be set one of these three ways:

Absolute image size: You want to have a specific size of your poster.
Size in Pages: You want to use whole paper sheets and specify how many of them of them you want to use.
Image Size in percent: Your input image has a certain size which is defined by the number of pixels and dpi (dots per Inch) and your want to scale the image by a certain factor.

The final size of the poster is theoretically unlimited. Let's say it this way: it is less limited that the ink of your printer ;)
It is possible to select the alignment of the image on the total paper. This is useful if you want to keep the unused paper.

Image tile overlapping

For a bigger tolerance when cutting spare paper borders and for easier pasting, an overlapping width and height of an image tile over the next can be set.

PDF output

The PDF output is implemented with the maximum image quality and a good compression in mind. A source image is embedded once in the PDF document and referenced from every tile page. Image color types remain unchanged. As compression method, the PDF "FlateDecode filter" (zip) is used. If a Jpeg image is used as input it gets directly embedded into the document without recompression. The PDF version is 1.4, so any Acrobat Reader version 4 and higher should be able to read the resulting document.

After downloading the ZIP archive, extract the contained PosteRazor.exe to a place of Your choice and start it. If You use a Windows version below XP, You probably need an installed Unzip tool.

After downloading the OSX disk image, double click to mount it if it doesn't mount automatically. You can start the contained PosteRazor application directly by double clicking it or drag it into a location of Your choice.
Linux version (641 KB)
After downloading, untar it. This binary was statically linked against Fltk and FreeImage. It runs on (K)Ubuntu 6.06, 7.04, 7.10 and 8.04 from boot CD. Howerver, it will probably not run on a non-(K)Ubuntu system.

Third Party Code

Adding site counters, templates, and other third-party code to your blog can be a great way to add some flare to your content, but can also leave your blog vulnerable to malicious activity if you aren't familiar with its source.

Over the years we've seen a number of third party scripts disguise themselves as helpful add-ons, when in fact they are performing a malicious operation behind the scenes. For example, a site counter widget may indeed be providing your blog with helpful tracking data, but at the same time may also be discreetly sending that information to advertisers for the purpose of collecting the online habits of your readers. A blog template you downloaded from a third party site might include pop-up ads or links to dangerous sites that install malware on visitor's computers.

Seven Transformation Pack gives to your system the fresh and cool look of Microsoft's new operating system: Windows 7. The pack changes most of the system icons, skins and toolbars and also adds new enhancements to your desktop.

Well, it's finally here. Although Windows 7 RTM is coming near. However, I don't think waiting for Windows 7 RTM to be released first wouldn't be wise enough because there may be tons of changes and need another long delay again. This version is pretty much simple for bug fixes and some in-house updates like ViGlance. But why 2.0 instead of 1.0.1 or 1.1? Because there're some special updates in this release and it's just only beginning for me (though some people may aware of this and get bored already).

Seven Transformation Pack 2.0 Keynotes

Vista compatibilities - Starting from version 2.0, Seven Transformation Pack will support Windows Vista operating system and allow user to get Windows 7 experiences in Windows Vista. It will support XP/2003 and Windows Vista in same installation package for easy update and avoid conflicts. You may think file size is too large for Windows Vista user alone but please bear with it.

Bug fixes - some bugs found in previous releases are fixed. This includes clean uninstallation that will remove all installed features and tweaks for real this time. I tested it in Windows XP/2003/Vista and found everything removed properly. Bugs with incorrect icons are fixed also but I intentionly changed closed folder to ones specified in imageres.dll as proper closed folder regardless of Windows Vista/7 keep using opened for both. Vista Rainbar will not longer keep nagging full screen application and have memory leak issue resolved for long-time use.

ViGlance improvements - This is our MVP in this release. You will get the advanced version of ViGlance. It has Aero Peek feature showing live thumbnail on taskbar. You can pin application on taskbar as Windows 7. Options section is now available for ViGlance configuration and yeah.....it has superb graphics updated by Windows X that resembles Windows 7 RTM. The stability is improves a lot too and compatible with vertical taskbar and full screen apps.

PhotoFiltre is a complete image retouching program. It allows you to do simple or advanced adjustments
to an image and apply a vast range of filters on it. It is simple and intuitive to use, and has an easy
learning curve. The toolbar, giving you access to the standard filters with just a few clicks, gives
PhotoFiltre a robust look.

Its wide range of filters allows novice users to familiarize themselves with the world of graphics. You can
find the standard adjustment functions (Brightness, contrast, dyed, saturation, gamma correction) and
also artistic filters (watercolor, pastels, Indian ink, pointillism, puzzle effect).
There are more than 100 filters to be discovered !

PhotoFiltre uses two types of vectorial selections. The first type uses automatic shapes (rectangle,
ellipse, triangle, rhombus, rounded rectangle). The second type corresponds to the lasso and polygon.
They both allow a customized form by drawing a shape by hand or using a series of lines. Every
selection can be saved into a seperate file, to be used later on.

With PhotoMasque you can create advanced effects of contour and transparency on your images by
using preset masks. These masks are grayscale images, where white is the transparancy color, while
opacity increases as the shades of gray become darker. Black means complete opacity. PhotoMasque
comes with several basic masks to inspire you to create your own masks.
