After a few years of outdoing the Rolling Stones at their own game, Messrs. May and Co., clearly affected by their love of swinging London nightlife and all that went with it, injected their primal R&B roots with added spice (as Mike Stax, "numero uno Los Pretty Things fan," points out in his excellent liner notes).
"Can't Stand the Pain" (from the 1965 Get The Picture album) has "a remarkably effective mood with a sense of a dreamy disembodiment that foreshadows what was yet to come with the arrival of psychedelia." By April 1966, B-side "LSD," yet another controversial shot in the Pretty Things' canon, helped pioneer the "freakbeat" sound, whilst the media's attacks on the Pretties slack, druggy values were foremost to the changing times -- in fact, the record was a play on words about the English economy and not a celebration of the merits of LSD usage. However, the band was clearly well-aware of LSD and its effects, and over the coming months further musical explorations that were to steer the band away from their earlier tough R&B sound were to occur.

After the rather well-thought inclusion of these two late 1965 and early 1966 tracks, the rest of this double CD focuses on output that was recorded across the 1967 to 1970 psychedelic era. Cuts from the much maligned Emotions album, released in May 1967, take on a new edge when singled out from the album's far from psychedelic brassy pop numbers. The visceral "There Will Never Be Another Day" chronicles an LSD trip, whilst "The Sun" and "Growing in My Mind" show a far more introspective side well suited to the floral times. A primer for this set is an earlier take of "Children," which crackles with raga guitar in an altogether less commercial manner than the album version. Although somewhat of an albatross around the band's neck, when intermingled with their psychedelically charged later material, the chosen cuts from Emotions certainly indicate the direction they were intending to take. The pre-S.F. Sorrow November 1967 single "Defecting Grey" was the pinnacle of not only the Pretty Things' experimentation with psychedelia, but one of the finest examples of British psychedelia.

A cacophony of fuzz guitar, trippy lyrics, fairground organ, and sitar, with numerous twists and turns in tempo, mood, and thematics. Like an acid trip, "Defecting Grey" was a rollercoaster of a ride that was fun, disturbing, and overall invigorating. At last the band had conquered psychedelia. Although they would never match its lysergic quality again, the Pretties were now a bona fide "underground freak band." After a following single ("Talkin' About the Good Times"/"Walking Through My Dreams") that utilized the heady sounds of the Mellotron, the psychedelic instrument that was second only to the sitar, the band soon unleashed the song cycle that they had been working on over the past months. S.F. Sorrow displayed the darker, more theatric side of psychedelia. Based on a short story written by Phil May, the album shifts moods and textures, making great usage of Norman Smith's production techniques at the Abbey Road studios. On this set, the selected album cuts are taken out of their original context, but as Stax notes, work superbly as songs on there own accord. (Also included on this CD are three tracks that were recorded for the September 1998 internet webcast of S.F. Sorrow. These are proof that the band still has it, even 30 years on.)

And as if a cohesive compilation of the band's psychedelic era wasn't enough, Snapper unleashed two previously unreleased live cuts that were recorded in Amsterdam in March 1969. "Alexander" was previously recorded for the DeWolfe Music Library as extra income for the non-hitmakers and was featured in the swinging '60s Norman Wisdom farce What's Good for the Goose, where the Pretties mimed to it in all of their hippy glory. Live, they attack the song with psych-punk venom, along with an equally powerful version of "She Says Good Morning" from the same concert.

In 1976, while Roxy Music had temporarily disbanded, 801 (also referred to as THE 801) got together as a temporary project and began rehearsing at Island Studios, Hammersmith, about three weeks before their first gig. The name of the band was taken from the Eno song "The True Wheel", which appears on his 1974 solo album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy). The refrain of the song -- "We are the 801, we are the central shaft" -- reportedly came to him in a dream (although it has also been noted that "Eight Nought One" acrostically spells his name).

801 performed three critically highly acclaimed concerts: in Norfolk, at the Reading Festival and the final concert on 3 September at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. This last concert was recorded live and released as the album 801 Live. The music consisted of more or less mutated selections from albums by Manzanera, Eno, and Quiet Sun, plus a full-scale rearrangement of Lennon-McCartney's "Tomorrow Never Knows" and an off-the-wall excursion into The Kinks' 1964 hit "You Really Got Me".

Released at the height of the punk rock revolution in the UK, the LP was not a major commercial success, but it sold well throughout the world, particularly because it gained rave reviews from critics, both for the superb performances by the musicians and for its groundbreaking sound quality.

Although live albums were by then becoming increasingly sophisticated in their production -- thanks to the advent of portable multi-track recorders and mobile studios -- most were hampered by relatively poor sound quality. Up until this time, the standard procedure for both front-of-house mixing and live recording was capture the sound of amplified instruments such as guitars by placing microphones in front of the amplifiers. Although many superb performances were captured, the results were still markedly inferior to studio recordings and live recordings often suffered from a range of problems such as distortion, noise, sound "leakage" between instruments, poor separation and intrusive audience sounds.

801 Live set new standards for live recordings because it was one of the first live LPs in which all outputs from the vocal microphones, guitar amps and others instruments (except the drums) were fed directly to the mobile studio mixing desk, rather than being recorded via microphones and/or signals fed out the front-of-house PA mixer. This so-called "Direct Injection" (DI) method had been used for years in the studio but this was one of the first instances of the method being successfully used to record a live album.

801 Live became a significant cult success in many countries, notably in Australia, where it was heavily promoted by the ABC's new 24-hour rock station Double Jay (2JJ), which had opened in January 1975. Although based in Sydney, the station could be heard widely around New South Wales and was relayed nationally after midnight via the ABC's national AM network. It is notable that 801 Live received virtually no commercial radio airplay, it had no music video to promote it, and it was originally not even locally released in Australia. Despite this, the album became the highest-selling import album of the year in Australia in 1976 and demand for it as an import item eventually forced the Australian distributors to release it locally. Australian band Icehouse played 801 songs as well as other Eno covers.[citation needed]

In 1977, hoping to capitalise on the success of 801 Live, the band recorded and released Listen Now, a studio album with additional collaborating musicians including Tim Finn of Split Enz, but without Lloyd Watson.

In late 1977, 801 reformed as another live group around Manzanera and MacCormick for a promotion tour for the album Listen Now. Their concert at Manchester University was finally released as the album 801 Manchester in 2001.

In 2006, the official Phil Manzanera Web site Manzanera.com reported that 801 Live was soon to be reissued as a double CD with "minor tweaks" to the original recordings and restoration of the "proper ending" to the song Third Uncle. On the original album, Third Uncle builds to a crescendo of guitar strokes and cuts abruptly to silence. According to the Web site, new material for the second CD will include the band's last rehearsal on a sound stage at Shepperton Film Studios. An official release date for the new double CD has not been announced.

Max Romeo (born Maxwell Livingston Smith, 22 November 1947, St. D'Acre, St. James, Jamaica) is a reggae and roots reggae recording artist who has achieved chart success in his home country, and in the UK. Romeo was responsible for launching an entirely new sub-genre of reggae, whose overtly suggestive lyrics caused an outcry but took a massive hold of the music scene regardless. Yet innuendo was the least of the singer's stylings, previous to the release of his infamous "Wet Dream," Romeo had garnered a string of sweet hits with the vocal trio the Emotions. And once the nocturnal naughtiness faded, the singer established himself as one of the most important figures in the roots scene. (Wikipedia).

War Ina Babylon is perhaps the most famous and cult album by Max Romeo and Lee Perry's backing band The Upsetters, released in 1976. Along with The Heptones' Party Time and Junior Murvin's Police and Thieves, this album can be seen as part of a Black Ark Lee "Scratch" Perry produced "holy trinity". Highlights include the moving "One Step Forward", "War Ina Babylon", the militant "Chase The Devil", and the "film noir" reggae of "Norman".

Spirit's self-titled debut album is one whose multifarious experimentalism owes a lot to the contemporary successes of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It marked the humble beginnings and grand aspirations of its eponymous authors. While the mindset required to produce Spirit was ubiquitous, the endeavour itself was far from clichéd. The eclecticism of Randy California's writing coupled Barrett's psychotropism with Morrison's West Coast bohemianism; and although the result proved somewhat inaccessible to the masses, it made the project ripe for underground FM airtime. The band would later curtail its psychedelia, focusing on a broader array of genres.

This release was published first by Ode records in 1968. It has since been reprinted by Sony–repackaged in compact-disc form and remastered from original analogue tapes. (Wikipedia)

Robin Williamson (born 24 November 1943, Edinburgh) is a Scottish multi-instrumentalist musician, singer, songwriter and storyteller, who first made his name as a founder member of The Incredible String Band.

Robin Williamson released his first solo album, Myrrh, in 1972, when still a member of the Incredible String Band. The album begins with a composition by a long-time friend of Williamson, Ivan Pawle (of the band Dr. Strangely Strange). 'Strings in the earth and air' is a perfect opener, one of the most beautiful songs Robin has ever recorded. It sets the mood for the album perfectly, invoking images of music, nature, love and beauty.

Biography;

He lived in the Portobello area of Edinburgh, and attended George Watson's College before leaving at the age of 15 to become a professional musician. At first he performed in local jazz bands, with Gerard Dott (a later member of the ISB) and others, before turning to traditional music as a singer and guitarist. By 1961 he had met and begun sharing a flat with Bert Jansch, and in 1963 they traveled together to London to play the metropolitan folk circuit.[1]

By 1965 he had returned to Edinburgh and formed a duo with Clive Palmer, specialising in fiddle and banjo arrangements of traditional Scots and Irish songs. Joe Boyd signed them to Elektra Records in 1966, by which time they had recruited third member Mike Heron. As resident band at Clive’s Incredible Folk Club in Glasgow, they called themselves the Incredible String Band.

Between 1966 and 1974 the Incredible String Band, based around the duo of Williamson and Heron, released some 13 albums, becoming in the UK one of the most popular, best-loved and influential groups of the era. The group also included Williamson's sometime girlfriend Licorice McKechnie.

Williamson released his first solo LP, "Myrrh", in 1971 when still a member of the Incredible String Band. After the band split up in 1974, he began living in Los Angeles and, for a while, turned his attention to writing, co-writing an espionage novel, "The Glory Trap".

By 1976 he had returned to music, forming The Merry Band with Sylvia Woods (Celtic harp), Jerry McMillan (fiddle), and Chris Caswell (flutes, and wire-strung harp). They toured extensively for three years throughout the US, Canada, and Europe, and released three albums "Journey’s Edge", "American Stonehenge", and "A Glint At The Kindling".

After the breakup of the Merry Band, Williamson returned to the UK and started to tour solo, offering sets dominated by traditional stories set to song. Releases of this period include "Songs of Love and Parting" and "Legacy of the Scottish Harpers". Williamson's concern with the British bardic tradition also manifested itself in several books and tapes containing spoken renditions of traditional tales. He has also written a tutorial book of English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish Fiddle Tunes (ISBN 0-8256-0165-7) as well as one for the penny whistle (ISBN 0-8256-0190-8).

Williamson's live album with John Renbourn, 'Wheel Of Fortune' (1995), was nominated for a Grammy, (as was the ISB album 'Hangman's Beautiful Daughter', in 1968).

In the late 1990s he took part, with Palmer and Heron, in a reformed ISB. Williamson left the band some time around the start of 2003 - some rumours had it that he was forced out in acrimonious circumstances. The reformed band disbanded once again in 2006.

Meanwhile Williamson resumed his solo career, notably on record with a series of albums for the ECM label. "Seed-at-zero' (2000), 'Skirting The River Road' (2002) and 'The Iron Stone' (2006) featured him combining his own words with those of the likes of Dylan Thomas, William Blake, and Walt Whitman. Musically these records show him increasingly working in a fusion style (similar in some ways to the avant-garde work of the Incredible String Band in the 60's) which incorporates folk, jazz, Renaissance, Classical and Eastern influences. A group of distinguished jazz musicians accompany Williamson on the two most recent ECM records, notably violist Mat Maneri, bassist Barre Phillips, Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Moller, and English sax player Paul Dunmall.

Crosby Stills Nash and Young Rare Demos

Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) are a folk rock supergroup made up of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, also known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by occasional fourth member Neil Young. They are noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism, and lasting influence on music and culture. All four members of CSNY have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, though Young's multiple inductions were for work not involving the group.

Initially formed by the trio of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, the genesis of the group lies in two 1960s rock bands, The Byrds and The Hollies, and the demise of a third, Buffalo Springfield. Friction existed between David Crosby and his bandmates in the Byrds, and he was dismissed from the Byrds in the autumn of 1967.

By early 1968, Buffalo Springfield had also disintegrated over personal issues, and after aiding in putting together the band’s final album, Stephen Stills found himself unemployed by the summer. He and Crosby began meeting informally and jamming, the results of one encounter in Florida on Crosby’s schooner being the song “Wooden Ships,” composed in collaboration with another guest, Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane.

Graham Nash had been introduced to Crosby when the Byrds had toured the UK in 1966, and when the Hollies ventured to California in 1968, Nash resumed his acquaintance with Crosby.

At a party in July 1968 at Cass Elliot's house, Nash asked Stills and Crosby to repeat their performance of a new song by Stills, “You Don't Have To Cry,” with Nash improvising a second harmony part. The vocals gelled, and the three realized that they had a unique vocal chemistry.

Creatively frustrated with the Hollies, Nash decided to quit and throw his lot in with Crosby and Stills. After failing an audition with the Beatles' Apple Records, they were signed to Atlantic Records by Ahmet Ertegün, who had been a fan of Buffalo Springfield and was disappointed by that band's demise

From the outset, given their respective band histories, the trio decided not to be locked into a group structure, using their surnames as identification to ensure independence and a guarantee against the band simply continuing without one of them, as had both the Byrds and the Hollies after the departures of Crosby and Nash. Their record contract with Atlantic reflected this, positioning CSN with a unique flexibility unheard of for an untested group. The trio also picked up a unique management team in Elliot Roberts and David Geffen, who had engineered their situation with Atlantic and would help to consolidate clout for the group in the industry.

Roberts kept the band focused and dealt with egos, while Geffen handled the business deals, since, in Crosby’s words, they needed a shark and Geffen was it. Roberts and Geffen would play key roles in securing the band’s success during the early years.

When it was announced that the band was forming, they ran into a slight contractual problem. Nash was already signed to Epic Records, the North American distributor of records by the Hollies, while Crosby and Stills were signed to Atlantic. In order to resolve this problem, Geffen engineered a deal whereby Nash was essentially traded to Atlantic for the rights to Richie Furay's band Poco; Furay was signed to Atlantic as a result of his membership in Buffalo Springfield.

Initial success

The trio's first album, Crosby, Stills, & Nash, was released in May 1969 and was an immediate hit, spawning two Top 40 hit singles and receiving key airplay on the new FM radio format. With the exception of drummer Dallas Taylor, Stills had handled the lion's share of the instrumental parts himself, which left the band in need of additional personnel to be able to tour, now a necessity given the debut album’s commercial impact.

Retaining Taylor, the band decided initially to hire a keyboard player. Stills at one point approached Steve Winwood who was already occupied with newly formed group Blind Faith. Atlantic label head Ahmet Ertegün suggested Canadian singer/songwriter Neil Young, also managed by Elliot Roberts, as a fairly obvious choice. Initial reservations were held by Stills and Nash, Stills owing to his history with Young in Buffalo Springfield, and Nash, due to his personal unfamiliarity with Young. But after several meetings, the trio expanded to a quartet with Young a full partner. The terms of the contract allowed Young full freedom to maintain a parallel career with his new back-up band, Crazy Horse.

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking

Unhalfbricking is the third album by British folk rock band Fairport Convention, released in 1969. It is seen as a transitional album in their history and marked a further musical move away from American influences towards more traditional English folk songs that had begun on their previous album, What We Did On Our Holidays, and arguably reached its peak on the follow-up, Liege & Lief, released later the same year.

Although featuring several at the time unreleased Bob Dylan songs, the album also marked Sandy Denny's maturation as a singer and songwriter, including "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?", a song covered by many other performers and now regarded as a classic.

The only traditional song on the album, "A Sailor's Life", is seen as pivotal in the development of English folk rock music.

Changes in the line-up of the band, due to not only to its musical direction but also to external events, mark this album as a turning point in the band's history. 1969 was a prolific year for Fairport Convention; from What We Did On Our Holidays to Liege & Lief within twelve months represented a major development.

The album also gave the band their first UK chart success, reaching number 12 in the UK album chart (the second highest position in the band's entire career), while the single release, "Si Tu Dois Partir", achieved number 21 in the UK singles chart

After their previous album had seen original singer Judy Dyble replaced by Sandy Denny, the group's male vocalist Iain Matthews left during the recordings for Unhalfbricking,and Denny took a more central role. The band had been invited to Bob Dylan's London music publishers to hear then unreleased tracks from The Basement Tapes, and of this the band's bassist, Ashley Hutchings, said "this strange, kind of mish-mash of styles and drawled lyrics came out of the speakers. It sounded kind of subterranean; there was this strange cloak of weirdness covering them. We loved it all. We would have covered all the songs if we could."

n the event, versions of "Percy's Song", "Million Dollar Bash" and "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" (retitled "Si Tu Dois Partir") were used on the album. The French lyrics for the latter were created during the interval of a performance at the Middle Earth Club.According to guitarist Simon Nicol "I think the boredom factor was one of the reasons we came up with this wacky idea. Three or four punters joined us in the dressing room; they were either French visitors or students of French working in London, and happened to be there that night."

Meanwhile Denny's "Autopsy", "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" (which would become her signature song), and the lengthy "A Sailor's Life" were also included. The latter track had been a traditional English folk song collected by A. L. Lloyd and already part of Denny's club repertoire. In particular, the version on Unhalfbricking has been described as "the turning point of Fairport's history from earlier contemporary Americana to English songs" and by Allmusic's Richie Unterberger as a "clear signpost to the future".

Guitarist Richard Thompson contributed two compositions to the album. The opening track, "Genesis Hall", is a slow song in waltz-time, on which he played dulcimer, and Sandy Denny provided the vocals; it was the B-Side of the single release.Genesis Hall was the nickname of the former Bell Hotel in Drury Lane, which had become a squat in early 1969 and later became noted for a mass eviction by the police. "Cajun Woman", which opens the second side of the album, features Dave Swarbrick's fiddle-playing in his first work with Fairport.

Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead

Dylan & the Dead is a collaborative live album by Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, released in 1989 by Columbia Records. It consists of seven songs written and sung by Dylan, with the Dead providing accompaniment. The album was produced by Jerry Garcia and John Cutler.

Dylan & the Dead was recorded in 1987, during a successful stadium tour of the same name. For this series of concerts, the Grateful Dead would perform two sets of material, followed by a set by Bob Dylan, backed by the Grateful Dead. Songs from two of the Grateful Dead performances are documented on the album View from the Vault IV.

The album sold well, reaching #37 on the Billboard charts in the U.S., #38 in the UK, and earning gold status in the United States.

Music in a Doll's House is the debut album by progressive rock group Family, released in July 1968. The album, co-produced by Dave Mason of Traffic , features a number of complex musical arrangements contributing to its ambitious psychedelic sound.

The Beatles had originally intended to use the title A Doll's House for the album they were recording during 1968. The release of Family's similarly titled debut then prompted them to adopt the minimalist title The Beatles for what is now more commonly referred to as The White Album due to its plain white sleeve.

"Old Songs, New Songs" features a cameo from the Tubby Hayes group.

This album was initially issued in the US using the UK import and sold in the US as a domestic album (with an extra piece of cardboard to stiffen up the sleeve). Around the time the second album was issued in the US, US pressings of this album started to appear.

In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #30 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".

Family were an English rock band that formed in Late 1966 and disbanded in October 1973. Their style has been characterised as progressive rock, although their sound often explores other genres, incorporating elements of such styles as folk, psychedelia, acid, jazz fusion and basic rock and roll. The band achieved recognition in the United Kingdom, through their albums and appearing at festivals, but were unable to attract the same level of attention in USA.

The band's rotating membership throughout its relatively short existence led to a diversity in sound throughout their different albums. Family are also often seen as an unjustly forgotten act,when compared with other bands from the same period and have been described as an "odd band loved by a small but rabid group of fans". Les Holroyd: "I remember writing all the melody lines for that on a Hammond. The singing was all over the place, but in those days you didn't have the luxury of going back and doing it all again!". The correct title, incidentally, should have been "When The World Has Woken", but it was mis-quoted on the album artwork and has remained that way ever since.

The Iron Maiden

Woolly: "It reflected a kind of medieval feel - a folk song in a kind of "Olde Englishe" way. The song was actually about a rather obnoxious girl I knew who was nicknamed Behemoth!

"The Iron Maiden" gained television exposure when it was broadcast with a film clip about the return of the steamship SS Great Britain to the UK which was shown on Disco 2, a precursor of BBC2's Old Grey Whistle Test.

Dark Now My Sky

John's epic was a firm favourite with early fans, and is still his favourite of his own songs on the album. Les and Woolly also both rate it as their favourite track from the debut album. The song was around in 1968, but in a simpler version without the rather overblown orchestration. Woolly admits to being responsible for the "Shakespearean" spoken introduction after the style of Peter Sellers, and the maniacal laughter is from Robert Godfrey.

John: "It was inspired by a book called The Silent Spring (by Rachel Carson), written in the sixties about man's destruction of the environment".

Les: "It's still my favourite from the LP, because it was so different from anything we'd done."

Just A Collection Of Antiques And Curios, is a live album by English band Strawbs recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London on July 11, 1970. The album reached number 27 in the UK Album Charts.
The band line-up had changed dramatically from that of the previous album, Dragonfly. Only founder-members Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper remained, double bass player Ron Chesterman and cellist Claire Deniz being replaced by rhythm section John Ford and Richard Hudson. Rick Wakeman also became a full-time member. Thus the band changed from being a folk quartet to a rock quintet.
The concert was instrumental in bringing Rick Wakeman's virtuosity to the attention of the music media, who prophesied super-stardom for the keyboard player.

Hero and Heroine is a studio album by English band Strawbs. After the tour supporting the previous album, Bursting at the Seams, there was an acrimonious split leaving only Dave Cousins and Dave Lambert to rebuild the band. The new line-up gelled very quickly and studio sessions were very productive. The album was released first in the US to a warm reception, and then in the UK where reviews were more negative. The album only reached number 35 on the UK Album Charts[1] and the band increasingly began to look to North America for a successful future.

The album, although still recognisably Strawbs, contains tracks with harsh "straight talking" lyrics, in contrast to the more lyrical approach shown on Bursting at the Seams. The music is more Gothic and doom-laden with washes of mellotron and guitar power chords, especially on the longer tracks.

All band members made writing contributions, notably Chas Cronk with whom Dave Cousins would write many songs on future albums.

Dylan & the Dead is a collaborative live album by Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, released in 1989 by Columbia Records. It consists of seven songs written and sung by Dylan, with the Dead providing accompaniment. The album was produced by Jerry Garcia and John Cutler.
Dylan & the Dead was recorded in 1987, during a successful stadium tour of the same name. For this series of concerts, the Grateful Dead would perform two sets of material, followed by a set by Bob Dylan, backed by the Grateful Dead. Songs from two of the Grateful Dead performances are documented on the album View from the Vault IV.

The album sold well, reaching #37 on the Billboard charts in the U.S., #38 in the UK, and earning gold status in the United States.

Bob Dylan (born Robert Allen Zimmerman; May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. He has been a major figure in popular music for five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when he was at first an informal chronicler, and later an apparently reluctant figurehead of social unrest. A number of his songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became anthems for the civil rights and anti-war movements. His early lyrics incorporated a variety of political, social and philosophical, as well as literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed hugely to the then burgeoning counterculture. Dylan has both amplified and personalized musical genres, exploring numerous distinct traditions in American song—from folk, blues and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly, to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and swing.
Dylan performs with guitar, keyboard/Piano, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. Micheal Moorcocks Deep Fixx - New Words Fair

New Worlds Fair is a 1975 concept album by UK rock group Michael Moorcock & Deep Fix.
Moorcock was an established science fiction author who had contributed lyrics and occasionally performed with Hawkwind. In 1974 he was offered a record deal by Andrew Lauder, Hawkwind's A&R man for United Artists Records, although Moorcock insisted that his compatriots Steve Gilmore and Graham Charnock should have significant input into the album.
The single "Dodgem Dude"/"Starcruiser" had been recorded just prior to the album, but United Artists passed on the idea of releasing it. Some time later as Moorcock was visiting his former manager Douglas Smith, with whom he was in dispute, he discovered the tapes for the single lying around the office. Without Smith's knowledge he took them, passing them onto Frenchy Gloder who gave the single a belated release on his Flicknife Records label (FLS200, December 1980)

Octopus

Michael Craven Moorcock (born 18 December 1939, in London) is an English writer primarily of science fiction and fantasy who has also published a number of literary novels.
Moorcock has mentioned The Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, The Apple Cart by George Bernard Shaw and The Constable of St. Nicholas by Edward Lester Arnold as the first three books which captured his imagination. He became editor of Tarzan Adventures in 1956, at the age of 16, and later moved on to edit Sexton Blake Library. As editor of the controversial British science fiction magazine New Worlds, from May 1964 until March 1971 and then again from 1976 to 1996, Moorcock fostered the development of the science fiction "New Wave" in the UK and indirectly in the United States. His serialization of Norman Spinrad's Bug Jack Barron was notorious for causing British MPs to condemn in Parliament the Arts Council's funding of the magazine.

During this time, he occasionally wrote under the pseudonym of "James Colvin," a "house pseudonym" used by other critics on New Worlds. A spoof obituary of Colvin appeared in New Worlds #197 (January 1970), written by "William Barclay" (another Moorcock pseudonym).

Moorcock, indeed, makes much use of the initials "JC", and not entirely coincidentally these are also the initials of JesusChrist (as well as that of John Carter, Edgar Rice Burroughs' main character in The Gods of Mars), the subject of his 1967 Nebula award-winning novella Behold the Man, which tells the story of Karl Glogauer, a time-traveller who takes on the role of Christ. They are also the initials of various "Eternal Champion" Moorcock characters such as Jerry Cornelius, Jerry Cornell and Jherek Carnelian. In more recent years, Moorcock has taken to using "Warwick Colvin, Jr." as yet another pseudonym, particularly in his "Second Ether" fiction. In 2008, The Times newspaper named Moorcock in their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945"

Moorcock in music
Moorcock collaborated with the British rock band Hawkwind on many occasions: The Hawkwind track "The Black Corridor," for example, included verbatim quotes from Moorcock's novel of the same name, and he worked with the band on their album Warrior on the Edge of Time. Moorcock also penned the lyrics to "Sonic Attack," a Sci-Fi send-up of the public information broadcast, that was part of Hawkwind's Space Ritual set. Hawkwind's album The Chronicle of the Black Sword was largely based on the Elric novels. Moorcock appeared on stage with the band occasionally during the Black Sword tour. His contributions were removed from the original release of the Live Chronicles album, recorded on this tour, due to legal reasons, but has subsequently appeared on some double CD versions. He can also be seen performing on the DVD version of Chronicle of the Black Sword.

Moorcock also collaborated with former Hawkwind frontman and resident poet, Robert Calvert (who gave the chilling declamation of "Sonic Attack"), on Calvert's albums Lucky Leif and the Longships and Hype.
Moorcock has his own music project, which records under the name Michael Moorcock & The Deep Fix. The first album New Worlds Fair was released in 1975. The album included a number of Hawkwind regulars in the credits. A second version of the album Roller Coaster Holiday was issued in 2004. In 2008, The Entropy Tango & Gloriana Demo Sessions was released. These were sessions for planned albums based on two of his novels: Glorianna and The Entropy Tango. The albums were never completed. (The Deep Fix was the title story of an obscure collection of short stories by James Colvin published in the 1960s. The Deep Fix was also the fictional band fronted by Moorcock's character Jerry Cornelius.)

Moorcock wrote the lyrics to three album tracks by the American band Blue Öyster Cult: "Black Blade," referring to the sword Stormbringer in the Elric books, "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" showing us Elric's emotions at a critical point of his story (this song may also refer to the "Warriors at the Edge of Time," which figure heavily in Moorcock's novels about John Daker; at one point his novel The Dragon in the Sword they call themselves the "veterans of a thousand psychic wars"), and "The Great Sun Jester," about his friend, the poet Bill Butler, who died of a drug overdose. Moorcock has performed live with BÖC (in 1987 at the Atlanta, GA Dragon Con Convention) and Hawkwind.

Moorcock appeared on five tracks on the Spirits Burning CD Alien Injection, released in 2008. He is credited with singing lead vocals and playing guitar and mandolin. The performances used on the CD were from the The Entropy Tango & Gloriana Demo Sessions.
The first of an audio book series of unabridged Elric novels, with new work read by Moorcock, have recently begun appearing from AudioRealms. The second audiobook in the series - The Sailor on the Seas of Fate—was published in 2007.

Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake was a successful concept album by the English rock band Small Faces. Released on 24 May 1968 the LP became a number one hit in the UK Album Charts on 29 June where it remained for a total of six weeks. The album was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

The title and the design of the distinctive packaging was a parody of Ogdens' Nut-brown Flake, a brand of tobacco which was produced in Liverpool from 1899.

The A-side is a mix of early heavy rock with "Song of a Baker"; psychedelic cockney knees-up songs "Lazy Sunday" and "Rene", the opening instrumental title track (which resembles their second single "I've Got Mine", which was a total bomb in 1965), and the soul influenced ballad "Afterglow (Of Your Love)".
The B-side is based on an original fairy tale about a boy called Happiness Stan, narrated in his unique ‘Unwinese’ gobbledegook by Stanley Unwin, who picked up modern slang from the band and incorporated it into the surreal narrative.

When Stan looks up in the sky and sees only half the moon, he sets out on a quest to search for the missing half. Along the way he saves a fly from starvation, and in gratitude the insect tells him of someone who can answer his question and also tell him the philosophy of life itself. With his magic power Stan intones, "If all the flies were one fly, what a great enormous fly-follolloper that would bold," and the fly grows to gigantic proportions. Seated on the giant fly's back Stan takes a psychedelic journey to the cave of Mad John the hermit, who explains that the moon's disappearance is only temporary, and demonstrates by pointing out that Stan has spent so long on his quest that the moon is now full again. He then sings Stan a cheerful song about the meaning of life.

Due to the album's complexities, Ogdens' was never performed live, however it was performed as a whole once on the BBC's television programme Colour Me Pop on Friday 21 June 1968. Songs featured were "Song of a Baker", "Happiness Stan", "Rollin' Over", "The Hungry Intruder", "The Journey", "Mad John" and "Happydaystoytown". Although the band mimed to the studio recordings, their microphones were left on to capture little ad libs.

In 2000 Q magazine placed Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake at number 59 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.

Highest UK album chart position: 1968, Number One (for six weeks), and a total of 19 weeks on chart.

Playbox Theatre Company, UK, have performed the whole album as a theatre piece in November 2008. It was directed by Stewart McGill and performed by a young cast with a Small Faces tribute band, and it was narrated by Stanley Unwin's son, John.

On October 10 2010, the world’s first major concert format production of Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake is to be staged at London's indigO2 venue, featuring an all-star line up of artists. The show will be promoted by Chas Cole of CMP and produced by John Hellier & Mark Cunningham.

Packaging
The album was originally released on vinyl in a circular novelty package of a metal replica of a giant tobacco tin inside which was a poster created with 5 connected paper circles with pictures of the band members. This proved too expensive and was quickly followed by a paper/card replica with a gatefold cover. Two limited-edition CD releases (including a three-disc deluxe edition in 2006 that included the original mono mix of the album on CD for the first time) went even further by packaging the disc(s) in a circular tin (as the original vinyl release had). However, most CD releases use conventional packaging, superimposing the circular artwork on a square booklet. The award-winning artwork for the album cover was done by Mick Swan who was a product of the sixties art school scene. Any other work by him is unknown but he is known to have worked as a fine arts tutor at Lowestoft F.E. College in 1974.

Mountain is an American blues-rock and hard rock band that formed in Long Island, New York in 1969. Originally comprising vocalist and guitarist Leslie West, bassist Felix Pappalardi and drummer N. D. Smart, the band broke up in 1972 before reuniting in 1974 and remaining active until today. Arguably best known for the song "Mississippi Queen", Mountain is one of many bands to be commonly credited as having influenced the development of heavy metal music in the 1970s.

The band was formed shortly after Leslie West, formerly of the Long Island R&B band The Vagrants, recorded a solo album titled Mountain (a reference to West's physical bulk) with bassist and former Cream collaborator Felix Pappalardi producing. The album also featured former Remains drummer N.D. Smart. The album spotlighted West's raw vocals and melodic, bluesy guitar style, and Pappalardi's heavy and elegant bass lines were heavily in evidence throughout, and according to West when Pappalardi asked what would be next West suggested the pair go on the road. Though heavily inspired by seminal British blues-rock band Cream (with which Pappalardi had been a frequent collaborator: he produced Disraeli Gears, Goodbye and Wheels of Fire, also contributing viola, brass, bells and organ to the latter), keyboardist Steve Knight was added to avoid the new band being perceived as a simple imitation. Cream drummer Ginger Baker held a brief stint as manager of the band during their early years. Naming themselves for West's album, West, Pappalardi, Smart, and Knight played shows on the West Coast before getting to play their fourth concert as a working band at the 1969 Woodstock Festival in Bethel, New York. (Their first album as a band, Climbing!, would include a tribute to the festival, "For Yasgur's Farm.")

Mountain was received enthusiastically by the festival audience but the band did not appear in the film of the event, nor was their performance included on volume 1 of the festival's live album, though their performances of "Blood of the Sun" (from West's album) and "Theme for an Imaginary Western" (a song they planned to record for Climbing and co-written by former Cream bassist Jack Bruce) appeared on the second volume of Woodstock performances.

Soon after Woodstock, Smart was replaced by Laurence "Corky" Laing. Climbing! was finished and released in the late fall of 1969. It led off with what becamethe band's signature song, "Mississippi Queen", which reached the middle of the top 40 charts as a single while the album reached the top 20 on the US album charts. Mountain began a hectic touring schedule in the middle of which they recorded a followup album, Nantucket Sleighride, released in 1971. This album reached the top 20 but failed to yield a hit single. The title track was used in the United Kingdom as the theme to ITV's Sunday political program Weekend World. After these early releases the band continued to receive a certain measure of critical acclaim but never again achieved great commercial success.

After Nantucket Sleighride, the band produced Flowers of Evil consisting of one side of studio material and one live side, culled from a concert at New York City's legendary Fillmore East. Within a year---Leslie West has since cited a combination of drug abuse within the band and Pappalardi's road weariness and burgeoning hearing impairment as primary factors---Mountain broke up; a live album, The Road Goes Ever On," was issued in 1972.

Pappalardi returned to studio work while West and Laing formed West, Bruce and Laing with former Cream bassist Jack Bruce. Their first American performance was a Carnegie Hall concert, prompting a bidding war that Columbia Records won, and the new trio cut two studio albums and a live release over the next two years. The Singles Collection: The London Years is a compilation album of Rolling Stones music released by former manager Allen Klein's ABKCO Records (who usurped control of the band's Decca/London material in 1970) after the band's departure from Decca and Klein.

Released in 1989, Singles Collection: The London Years is a triple album of every Rolling Stones single—and their B-Sides—mostly in their original mono mixes (at least as of the 2002 reissue), in both the UK and US encompassing their entire era with Decca Records in the United Kingdom and London Records in the United States—hence the album's title.

The original collection was produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, and digitally compiled and prepared under his supervision by P. D. Rain and Jody Klein.

With a range from 1963 to 1971, the set begins with their very first UK single, Chuck Berry's "Come On", and runs to Sticky Fingers' "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" (which Allen Klein shares release rights with The Rolling Stones).

The only omissions are four B-sides from 1970 and 1971. "Bitch" and "Let It Rock" (released in the UK on the "Brown Sugar" single) and "Sway" (B-side to "Wild Horses"). Allen Klein did not have release rights to this material when this compilation was released. Also not included was "Natural Magic", a Ry Cooder instrumental, released as the B-side to the 1970 Mick Jagger single "Memo from Turner". These are available on the box set Singles 1968–1971 except "Let It Rock" which is only available on the Rarities 1971–2003 album.

The set was released at a timely juncture, just a couple of weeks before The Rolling Stones' comeback album Steel Wheels was due for release after a significant break, and months following their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Going platinum, the album reached #91 in the US.

In 2007, Steven Van Zandt placed Singles Collection: The London Years #1 on his list of the most essential albums of all time.[citation needed]

In August 2002, Singles Collection: The London Years was issued in a new remastered Compact Disc and SACD digipak by ABKCO Records.

About the Rolliing Stones;

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in April 1962 by guitarist and harmonica player Brian Jones, pianist Ian Stewart, vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early lineup.

Jones initially led the band, but after Jagger and Richards began writing almost all songs for the band, and as Jones became increasingly erratic, Jagger and Richards assumed band leadership. In 1969 Mick Taylor joined the band on guitar shortly before Jones' untimely death until quitting in 1974. Since then guitarist Ronnie Wood has been with the band. Stewart was taken from the official lineup in 1963 to continue as the band's road manager and occasional keyboardist until his death in 1985. Wyman left in 1990 and was replaced by Darryl Jones as the primary bassist.

The Rolling Stones were first popular in Europe and became popular in North America during the British Invasion of the early sixties. The album, although still recognisably Strawbs, contains tracks with harsh "straight talking" lyrics, in contrast to the more lyrical approach shown on Bursting at the Seams. The music is more Gothic and doom-laden with washes of mellotron and guitar power chords, especially on the longer tracks.

All band members made writing contributions, notably Chas Cronk with whom Dave Cousins would write many songs on future albums. (Wikipedia)

Undead is the second album by Ten Years After, recorded live at the small jazz club, Klook's Kleek, in London, May 1968. This album set out to give listeners a real feel to what it was like to hear Ten Years After. Their eponymous first album was bluesy, but less emotional and passionate, and so the band decided to record the album live. The result was a combination of blues, boogie and the sometimes remarkable jazz playing ability of the band members.

The approach of the band on this album remains unique in that it is a rock/blues approach to swing. And swing it does! Although the soloing remains almost exclusively in the pentatonic scale and adheres strictly to a basic 1/IV/V 12 bar blues (with no traditional jazz substitutions), the boys manage to pull off a confident and aggressive post bop feel. This album became the introduction that many aspiring musicians used as a learning tool to explore beyond rock and pop boundaries and into more improvised stylings.

Ten Years After is an English blues-rock band, most popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Between 1968 and 1973, Ten Years After scored eight Top 40 albums on the UK Albums Chart. In addition they have had twelve albums enter the US Billboard 200, and are best known for their tracks "I'm Going Home", "Hear Me Calling", "I'd Love To Change the World" and "Love Like a Man".

Woodchoppers Ball

After several years of local success in the Nottingham/Mansfield area as a band known since 1962 as The Jaybirds (its core was formed in late 1960 as Ivan Jay and the Jaycats), and later as Ivan Jay and the Jaymen, Ten Years After was founded by Alvin Lee and Leo Lyons. Ivan Jay sang lead vocals from late 1960 to 1962 and was joined by Ric Lee in August 1965, replacing drummer Dave Quickmire, who had replaced Pete Evans in 1962. In 1966 The Jaybirds moved to London, where Chick Churchill joined the group. That November the quartet signed a manager, Chris Wright, and decided to change its name to Blues Trip, Blues Yard (under which they played a show at the Marquee Club supporting the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band), and finally in November 1966, to Ten Years After, (in honor of Elvis Presley, an idol of Lee's whose momentous year in rock, 1956, helps to better explain the band's title).

The group became the first act booked by the soon-to-be Chrysalis Agency. It secured a residency at the Marquee, and received an invitation to play at the Windsor Jazz Festival in 1967. That performance led to a contract with Deram, a subsidiary of Decca – the first band so signed without a hit single. In October, its 1967 self-titled debut album was released.

In 1968, after touring Scandinavia and the United States, Ten Years After released its second album, live Undead, which brought the noteworthy song "I'm Going Home". This was followed in February 1969 by the studio issue Stonedhenge, a British hit, that included another well known track, "Hear Me Calling" (it was released also as a single, and covered in 1972 by the British glam rock rising stars, Slade). In July 1969 the group appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival, in the first event to which rock bands were invited. In August, the band performed a breakthrough American appearance at Woodstock; their rendition of "I'm Going Home" featuring Alvin Lee as lead singer, was featured in both the subsequent film and soundtrack album and catapulted them to star status.

During 1970, Ten Years After released "Love Like a Man", the group's only hit in the UK Singles Chart. This song was on the band's fifth album, Cricklewood Green.The name of the album comes from a friend of the group who lived in Cricklewood, London. He grew a sort of plant which was said to have hallucinogenic effects. The band did not know the name of this plant, so the members called their album Cricklewood Green. It was the first record to be issued with a different playing speed on each side – one a three-minute edit at 45rpm, the other, a nine-minute live version at 33rpm. In August 1970, Ten Years After played the Strawberry Fields Festival near Toronto, and the Isle of Wight Festival 1970.

In 1971, the band released the album A Space in Time, which marked a move toward more commercial material. It featured the group's biggest hit, "I'd Love To Change The World". But the band broke up after the 1974 album Positive Vibrations. The members re-united in 1983 to play the Reading Festival,and this performance was later released on CD as The Friday Rock Show Sessions - Live At Reading '83' . In 1988, the members re-united for a few concerts and recorded the album About Time (1989). In 1994, they participated in the Eurowoodstock festival in Budapest.

Alvin Lee has since then mostly played and recorded under his own name. In 2004, the other band members replaced him with Joe Gooch, and recorded the album, Now.Material from the following tour was used for the 2005 double album, Roadworks.[4] Ric Lee is currently in a band called The Breakers, along with Ian Ellis (ex-Clouds). The Groundhogs is a British blues band founded in late 1963, that toured extensively in the 1960s, achieved prominence in the early 1970s and continued sporadically into the twenty-first century. Originally formed in 1962 as The Dollar Bills by brothers Pete and John Cruickshank (born in 1943,in Calcutta, West Bengal, India) in New Cross, London, Tony McPhee, the lead guitarist in an instrumental group called the Shcenuals, joined the group later that same year. McPhee steered them towards the blues and renamed them after a John Lee Hooker song, "Groundhog's Blues".

John Cruickshank suggested they became John Lee's Groundhogs when they backed John Lee Hooker on his 1964 UK tour: they later supplemented Little Walter, Jimmy Reed and Champion Jack Dupree when they toured the UK. McPhee featured on Dupree's From New Orleans to Chicago (1966) alongside Eric Clapton. The Groundhogs issued "Shake It" b/w "Rock Me" on the Interphon record label in January 1965.

Their line-up on their first album, Scratchin' the Surface, released in November 1968,[1] consisted of Tony McPhee (born Anthony Charles McPhee, 22 March 1944, at Redlands House near Humberston, Lincolnshire, England[1]) as singer and guitarist; bassist Peter Cruickshank (born 2 July 1945,in Calcutta, West Bengal, India); Ken Pustelnik on drums (born 13 March 1946 on a farm near Blairgowry, Angus, Scotland) and Steve Rye on harmonica (born 8 March 1946 in London – died 14 July 1992, in London). In 1969, the single "BBD" (Blind Deaf Dumb) flopped in the UK but hit number one in Lebanon.

The group's album releases Thank Christ For The Bomb (May 1970); Split (March 1971); and Who Will Save the World? The Mighty Groundhogs (March 1972), recorded as a trio without Rye, all reached the Top 10 in the UK Albums Chart.[2] Split reached number 5, spending 27 weeks in the UK Albums Chart and achieved gold record status, while a single release from the album, "Cherry Red", was featured on BBC Television's Top of the Pops program on 22 April 1971.

They supported The Rolling Stones on their 1971 British tour at the request of Mick Jagger and released an album of their live set on the Stones tour, recorded at Leeds University and called Live at Leeds. All these albums and live shows were performed by the classic power trio of Cruickshank, McPhee and Pustelnik. 1974's album Solid saw a last return to the charts.

After breaking up in 1976 they came back as a largely live act almost a decade later with a different line-up. At times in the 1990s McPhee alternated two line-ups, one with a second guitarist. After years of performing and recording for a loyal following, original manager Roy Fisher put together a short-lived 'original line-up' to celebrate their fortieth anniversary. McPhee left the band again in order to pursue an acoustic career, leaving Cruickshank and Pustelnik to continue, subsequently forming 'The Groundhogs Rhythm Section' with invited frontmen, latterly with Eddie Martin, while McPhee embarked on a major tour in 2004 with Edgar Winter and Alvin Lee and issued an acoustic blues album Blues at Ten.

McPhee put together a new band in 2007, with long-time Groundhogs bassist Dave Anderson (ex-Hawkwind) and Marco Anderson on drums. This trio toured England in 2008 with Focus and Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash. The 2009 line up of Tony McPhee's Groundhogs comprised McPhee, Anderson and previous long-term drummer Mick Jones. Huw Lloyd-Langton was born in London on 6th February 1952 and was raised in the Willesden Junction district.
His interest in playing the guitar came about when he saw a school band playing songs by The Shadows. A lady from his local fish and chip shop kindly gave him an old ukulele-banjo. He strung the ukulele-banjo with ordinary string and proceeded to use it to practice four string guitar chords on.

He enjoyed listening to B.B.C. radio transmissions with his father and his enthusiasm for the guitar was boosted further when he heard Bert Weedon's radio show and the odd Country and Western player.
Self taught, he went on to develop his own brilliant and distinctive style of playing.

After leaving school, he eventually found a job which suited his musical interest - working behind the counter of a music shop in the West End of London.

Here he got to know one of the customers, a busker called Dave Brock. Huw's first chance to get out on the road came soon after when, in 1966, he linked up with Winston Gork and Pete Beckett and their band Fox (later known as The Whip). Later on, their schedule took in a tour of Europe.

When he returned to London in 1969, Huw bumped into Dave Brock who asked him to join the embryonic Hawkwind. He accepted and went on to play on their debut album. Huw left Hawkwind shortly after their August 1970 'outside the gates' protest gigs at the Isle Of Wight Rock Festival. After taking a break, he relocated to Germany where he spent time in a band that featured Bobby Halma and John Lingwood. Huw and John then returned to the U.K. where they formed Amon Din with Dave Anderson and John Butler.

Huw then joined a band called Magill, which featured Pete Scott, John Clark and Rob Rawlinson. A percussionist friend, Lennox Laington, then arranged for Huw to join the calypso-rock band, Batti Mamselle, which featured Jimmy Chambers on vocals. This was followed by a stint in Leo Sayer's band.

Frank Farrell, Leo's bass player, then put Huw up for the job of guitarist in the supergroup Widowmaker, which featured, at times, Steve Ellis, Ariel Bender, Zoot Money, Paul Nichols, Bob Daisley and John Butler.
Other projects have included tours with Sacha Mezek (Alexander John), Bobby Hammer & Salt, The Pretty Things and Gallery plus acoustic duets with John Butler and Eddy Klima of The Rattles and teaching the guitar to pupils at a comprehensive school in Streatham. He also wrote the music for a cartoon that was narrated by Vivian Stanshall and worked with Michael Moorcock.

In 1979, he played on Steve Swindells' album, 'Fresh Blood' and then attempted to form a new band, Jawa, with Simon King and Nic Potter. When this failed, Huw ended up doing a session for Reg Laws, who was in the same stable as Hawkwind, and subsequently gigged with Reg's band, Kokomo. Soon after this, he accepted an invitation to rejoin Hawkwind and remained with them for the next ten years. He appeared on all of their output during this period and also wrote several songs for the band.

During those ten years, he also formed his own band, The Lloyd- Langton Group, and they issued four albums; 'Outside The Law' (1984; featuring John Clark and Rob Rawlinson), 'Night Air' (1985; featuring John Clark and Kenny Wilson), 'Like An Arrow...' (1987; featuring Clark and Wilson) and 'Time, Space And LLG' (1988; featuring Clark, Wilson, Lee Saunders and Esther St. James). They also issued two singles; 'Wind Of Change' (1982) and 'Dreams That Fade Away' (1984).

Huw also appeared on Nic Potter's 'Mountain Music' and 'The Blue Zone' albums and played on Robert Calvert's Lord Of The Hornets single.

Huw left Hawkwind in 1989, directly after the Robert Calvert Benefit show. The Lloyd-Langton Group's next album was 'Elegy' (1991) and the band continued to tour extensively. At one point, Warren Cann, the ex-drummer with Ultravox, joined the live line up on keyboards and rythm guitar. In 1993, Huw joined Doctor Brown for a tour of Italy before recording a new Lloyd-Langton Group album, 'River Run' (1994).

In 1995, Huw toured Sweden with Ray Majors and secured a record deal with a Swedish label. Huw was reunited with Hawkwind in August 1997 for a one off benefit concert to raise funds for the homeless. A new version of the Lloyd-Langton Group was put together and they issued the album 'On The Move' in 1998.

Huw continues to gig both with the group and as a solo artist and also finds the time to give guitar lessons to the attendees of his local community centre. <

Dear Mr. Fantasy is the debut album by English rock band Traffic. It was released in 1967. For the recording, group members included Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason, however Mason left the band before the album was released. The album reached the number 16 position in the UK album chart on 30 December 1967, and reached number 88 in the American Billboard charts

Considered by far the strangest and most art rock style album that Traffic released, Mr. Fantasy didn't gain much more than a cult following for Traffic at the time. Critics seemed to like the album, though, and most said it was clear that Steve Winwood and Traffic were good at putting together semi-mainstream psychedelic rock, except this album was not quite mainstream enough. By their next release, the eponymous Traffic, the band was said to have worked through that.

This album features even more horns, flutes, and less rock-style instruments than most of Traffic's future releases. The sitar was used much more in this album than any other later Traffic albums, undoubtedly because of Dave Mason's influence.

The first US version of the album on United Artists Records had a different title Heaven Is In Your Mind and a different cover that featured 3 members of the group without Dave Mason. The title was quickly changed back to Mr. Fantasy but the new cover remained until Island Records re-issued the UK version in the late 1970s. Both the US and UK editions of the album were released in substantially different stereo and mono mixes.

For the original US edition the group changed the album substantially. The song order was changed and a short looping snippet of the group's November 1967 single "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" was added between most of the songs. The US LP also added three songs from the group's UK singles, "Paper Sun" and "Hole In My Shoe" and "Smiling Phases" (b-side) while deleting two Dave Mason songs "Hope I Never Find Me There" and "Utterly Simple."

The final track on the US album "We're A Fade, You Missed This' is actually the ending of the full length version of "Paper Sun." For most of the songs there are significant differences between the stereo and mono mixes. One song in particular, "Giving to You", actually was released in 3 different versions, including similar mono and stereo versions from the U.K. album, plus a very different mono U.K. b-side mix, which also was later included on the U.S. mono LP. The special U.K. b-side mix includes lyrics sung by Winwood during the introduction which are not heard on any other version.

The album was engineered by Phil Brown who, when asked what was his favourite memory of engineering, responded: "Recording Dear Mr Fantasy, one o'clock in the morning, November 1967.

There are actually four different versions of the album when taking into account both the UK and US track listings and the different stereo and mono mixes. All have recently been re-issued on CD. The 1999 UK re-issue features the UK version in stereo and the US album in mono as bonus tracks. In 2000 the US stereo version was re-issued on CD with its original title Heaven Is In Your Mind plus stereo bonus tracks. The same year the original UK mono version was also released in the US as Mr Fantasy with mono bonus tracks.

Canyon Dreams is a in 1987 recorded album by Tangerine Dream released in 1991 on Compact Disc. The music is written as a sound accompaniment for the different scenic video scenes about the Grand Canyon released by Miramar. The tracks are divided into various episodes and related to the titles of the cuts.

The distinctive quality of this disc is the Native American influence. The unique style of Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Paul Haslinger make them experts in creating sequenced atmospheric soundscapes, and this is exactly what they do here. They use a Native American pace and add native flutes to give the disc a feel of the American Southwest. The execution is however, unmistakably recognizable as the Berlin School of electronic music. This is make the album quite unique and the reason that Tangerine Dream received its first Grammy nomination with this album. The album is the start of a new direction using a combination of the group's progressive style and its current commercial leanings.

The music ambience relates to contemporary musicians such as Soulfood, Steve Roach, Matthias Gohl, and Michael Stearns.

In 1991 the soundtrack of the video release Canyon Dreams was released officially as the first TD album by the Seattle based Miramar company, beginning the band's 'Seattle Years'. In the USA Canyon Dreams was nominated for the Grammy as "Best New Age Album 1991". Some months before a bootleg version of the soundtrack had already been released, titled The Canyon Dreams, featuring the music from the video. The music material on the official soundtrack was partially remixed, has slightly different running times and features the bonus track Colorado Dawn composed by Jerome Froese.

The 1999 re-release by TDI features one additional track, "Rocky Mountain Hawk", and an entirely redesigned booklet. The following sleeve notes about the Grand Canyon are included: "Two billion years of geological evidence of the earth's history is exposed in the canyon's rock walls, more than can be observed anywhere else in the world. Travelling The canyon's length requires a river journey of 277 miles, through canyons varying in distance from less than a half mile to more than eighteen miles apart, and through depths reaching nearly 600 feet. Early visitors named many of the large buttes after ancient gods. Jupiter, Juno, Apollo, Venus, Vishnu, Deva, Shiva and Brahma have temples here, while Vulcan and Wotan have thrones named in their honor. The Paiute Indians believed the canyon had been created by the god Tavwoats to separate the world of the living from the lands beyond death. Havasupai and Hulapai Indians believed the river was the runoff from an earth-covering flood, much like the one Noah experienced."

In March 2009 the album was re-released with different cover design as part of an extensive digipack series (consisting of a total of more than 60 CD and DVD releases) by the Germany based Membran record label.
