Dexter – New Season 5 Spoilers and Details via PaleyFest

Thursday’s “Dexter” PaleyFest panel wasted no time in jumping into one of TV’s best-kept secrets: Moderator Kristin Dos Santos from E! was sensitive to the massive spoiler in getting things under way and immediately asked if everyone had seen the bloodbath that was the drama’s Season 4 finale.

Julie Benz (Rita) was the only one in the Saban Theatre who raised her hand.

“I don’t know what happens, please don’t spoil it for me,” joked Benz, whose character met her maker at the hands of Season 4’s central villain, the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow).

Benz went on to share her first reactions to learning of her character’s death, as the panel — the show’s second appearance at the festival — got under way.

“My first response was, ‘Oh God! I just lost my job! How am I going to pay my mortgage,’ ” she said to laughs from the packed house — which included fans who lined up early in the afternoon to get into the sold-out event.

Executive producer John Goldwyn perhaps summed up Rita’s death best: “(Fans) felt punched in the gut.” Added executive producer Sara Colleton: “After they processed their surprise, (Rita’s death) felt right,” she said. “If it’s possible that a death can be earned, it was. It wasn’t a plot device or a cliffhanger.”

With such a shocking season finale, the bulk of the panel was spent addressing what every fan of the show is clamoring to find out — what happens to Dexter (Michael C. Hall) now? — and Colleton reassured everyone that the show won’t jump ahead.

“I think the death of Rita is so awesome that it needs to be honored,” she said. “We’re not going to jump ahead; we’ll actually process that.”

Exec prods dexter paleyfestOutgoing showrunner Clyde Phillips pointed out that each year Dexter asks himself a question that becomes the theme for that particular season, and that Season 4 really addressed sacrifice — a “Can I have it all?”-type look at whether Dexter can make the adjustment to being a husband, living in the suburbs, being a new father and step-father while still honoring his Dark Passenger.

Dexter, who is newly married, has two step-children and a newborn meets this man who has been doing this for 30 years and thinks, ‘Maybe I can do it all.’ ” Phillips said.

Hall — who noted that Tuesday marked his second-to-last round of chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that his final round will be March 17 — said that filming scenes opposite fellow Golden Globe winner Lithgow’s frighteningly creepy Trinity was actually the most fun he’s had acting with anyone.

“The darker it was, the more hysterical it was (to film),” Hall said. “John is infections. It really became about finding reasons to keep him alive. But yeah, he (Dexter) should have killed him sooner.”

Co-star Brando Eaton, who played Trinity’s tormented son Jonah, agreed.

“At some points I almost wanted to laugh (at Lithgow), but then he got so damn creepy,” he said to laughs. “He could definitely be a scary guy.”

Addressing Dexter’s relationship with his foster sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter), Phillips noted that the series made the key distinction to not follow the path of the Jeff Lindsay books on which it is based, thus keeping Deb unaware of Dexter’s Dark Passenger.

“It would burden the character and take away what Jennifer has created,” he said. Added executive producer Scott Buck: “Deb is very smart and every year becomes a better detective.”

Carpenter, meanwhile, played it neutral when pressed if she’s looking forward to finding out the truth about brother: “Whatever you write, I will do,” she said. “I’m overwhelmed with the possibilities of what might happen.”

Looking toward Season 5, which begins production in June, Hall said he’s looking forward to learning how Dexter responds to Rita’s death and the accompanying grief.

“We pick Dexter up where we last saw him and what his psychological mindset is and what his journey has been that year and then that takes you forward,” Colleton said.

“We drive ourselves so hard in the writers’ room to make it different, to make it a surprise, to get ourselves in trouble and figure out how we’re going to get out of it,” Phillips added.

“But it’s always based on where Dexter is and where his character is,” Colleton said. “It’s never about what’s going to be an exciting plot idea that we can put Dexter in or any of our characters through; it comes from where he is and what he’s experiencing. It’s very real what he’s going through.”

Dexter cast paleyfest Hall added that some of his favorite moments are comedic scenes he has shared with C.S. Lee’s Vince Masuka and the richness that adds to the drama.

“Dexter’s cluelessness sets things up for comedy and hopefully now that this traumatic thing has happened to him, he’ll find himself in situations that are inherently comedic because he’s going to have to learn about what it means to be someone who everyone’s treating as if he’s … been through something traumatic,” Hall said.

“Grief is a thing he’s never felt before,” “So I think it’ll be, uh, funny,” he joked. “He’s in hot water. I think there’s a way out of it, but that’s what we’d like to see. He’ll figure his way out. His capacity for stress management rivals his capacity for straight-up killing.”

Colleton, meanwhile, addressed a fan’s question about what happens to Rita’s kids, Cody and Astor.

“Cody and Astor are somewhat insulated from Dexter’s world, but it is something that is going to haunt Dexter,” she said. “That’s a very provocative issue that we are going to explore.”

Addressing a fan’s question about the elephant in the room — Hall and Carpenter’s marriage and if it was “weird” to play brother and sister — Hall was ever the gentleman: “To us it doesn’t actually seem weird.” He then paused and looked at Carpenter, who warned him to “Keep this short.” Colleton then interjected that Deb is Dexter’s foster sister and that fans “have to remember that. Dexter said (in the pilot) that ‘If I could love anyone it’d be Deb.’ ” Awkward groans and laughter ensued.

‘Dexter’s Julie Benz Boards ABC’s Superhero Pilot

‘Dexter’ and ‘Buffy’ alum Julie Benz is heading back to genre TV with a role in the ABC drama pilot ‘No Ordinary Family’, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The show stars ‘Shield‘ and ‘Fantastic Four’ vet Michael Chiklis as the head of a super-powered family. Benz will co-star as Chiklis’ wife, a sexy scientist who develops super speed (the power, not the drug).

Despite the drab title, ‘No Ordinary Family’ is shaping up to be a must-see. Chiklis and Benz are two of TV’s top actors, and the pilot is the brainchild of producer Greg Berlanti, a guy who knows a thing or two about creating compelling family drama (see ‘Everwood’, ‘Dirty Sexy Money’, ‘Brothers & Sisters’).

Berlanti is also a producer and writer on DC/Warner Bros.’ upcoming ‘Green Lantern’ flick, which gives him (and this project) a nice big dose of geek cred.

It’s great to see Benz landing a lead gig on a promising new show. I guess we’ll see her ‘Desperate Housewives’ storyline wrap up soon if the pilot goes to series.

Let’s hope ‘Family’ will give her another meaty and unforgettable character to play, like Darla on ‘Buffy’/‘Angel’ and, of course, (Spoiler here!) the doomed Rita from ‘Dexter’.

‘Dexter’s Julie Benz Talks … From Beyond the Grave!

Julie Benz has been all over the place since her latest stint on ‘Dexter’ came to an abrupt and shocking end.

And apparently, no one was more shocked about her character than Julie herself! “Out of all the characters that I’ve played, I think she’s the one I grieved for the most, just because it really came out of left field.”

She recently sat down with our own Jane Boursaw for an interview at AOL Television (the only reason they wouldn’t let me do it is because the majority of my dialogue would have consisted of drooling and repeating the phrase “Hamina-hamina-hamina”).

She talked about her run on the acclaimed Showtime series, as well as her latest run on ‘Desperate Housewives’ as a stripper in reform and her rumored return to films such as ‘Rambo V’ and ‘Saw VII.’

Dexter: Cancer-Stricken Michael C. Hall is Doing Fine

It was a victorious night for Dexter
star Michael C. Hall who not only won his first Golden Globe award but also revealed that he’s now doing much better. Just last week, the
38-year-old actor revealed that he’s been undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer originating from white blood cells, and that the disease is currently in remission.

“It’s nice to have an excuse for accessorizing,” joked the Dexter actor who wore a dapper suit and a black designer Japanese cap at the awards ceremony to cover his head.

After winning the award following three previous nominations for Best Actor in a drama for Showtime’s Dexter, Hall told reporters, “It’s nice to see colleagues, and for me to show [people] I am doing fine.”

Hall initially wanted to keep his condition a secret but decided to reveal his illness due to the Golden Globes. “I had every intention of keeping it quiet, but because award shows were imminent, I had to make a statement,” Hall said, adding that it was nice to be able to make the statement when his prognosis was good.

Hall, who is married to his Dexter co-star Jennifer Carpenter, remains optimistic in his fight against cancer. “I like to think I have a good head on my shoulders,” he said. “I have never been less susceptible to [having a big head] given the more down in the trenches stuff I have been considering.”

Aside from the upcoming fifth season of Dexter, Michael C. Hall can also be seen in the comedy Peep World and the drama East Fifth Bliss.

Dexter – Michael C. Hall – Treated for Cancer

“Dexter” star Michael C. Hall says he was diagnosed with cancer and is on the road to the successful completion of treatment.

In a statement Wednesday, Hall said he was fortunate to be diagnosed with a “treatable and curable condition,” Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

A spokesman for the actor said the disease is in complete remission and Hall’s treatment will continue as planned.

The actor is a nominee for both Sunday’s Golden Globes and the upcoming Screen Actors Guild awards. He plans to attend both ceremonies.

Julie Benz Bids Farewell to Rita, Dexter Viewers

In the days following the Dexter season four finale, we’ve heard from show producers and show stars such as John Lithgow and Michael C. Hall.

Everyone had a lot to say about Rita’s shocking death, but fans have been waiting all week to hear from Julie Benz herself. How did she react when told of her character’s demise? Will Rita turn into a ghost?

E! News asked these questions, and many more, of
the actress. Her candid replies are below…

On any kind of return: “There has been no talk of me coming back to the series in any way. A lot of people have been begging me to tell them that I’m going to come back, and I’m like, ‘Rita’s dead!’ Rita is dead and Trinity killed her… I don’t think it could get any more obvious that Trinity killed Rita. Rita is dead.”

On reaction to her death scene: “The death was such a graphic image… When they first told me I was dying, they didn’t tell me how I was dying… I did feel anger about them taking this innocent, sweet woman in such a violent and terrifying way – which we know from the woman in the bathtub in the first episode.

“We know we’re making a TV show, but you see a little baby and fake blood, and it was still a very disturbing image. But it’s a poetic way to go because it’s a direct reflection of Dexter as a child and there’s poetry in that if you can get past that, which I think is what they were going for.”

On joining another show: “I love FlashForward, Grey’s
Anatomy, Mad Man, 30 Rock. I’d love to be a part of a show where they don’t think it’s cool to kill me!”

On what’s ahead on Dexter: “I assume Astor and Cody will go with their grandparents, but what about Harrison? I know that one option is to have them jump ahead in time. They have the option of taking the story creatively wherever they want.

“But of course I worry about Harrison. The first thing I said when they told me about Rita’s death was, ‘What about the children?!’ I felt like a real mother, and I will be tuning in to make sure that Harrison is taken care of.”

So will we. We also wish Benz the best of luck in her next career step. She should have no trouble finding work, that’s for sure.

Dexter – Michael C. Hall on Season 4

Two days later, we’re still shaking. The season 4 finale of Dexter delivered a few jaw-dropping jolts — and one shocking death. We asked Golden Globe nominee Michael C. Hall, a.k.a. America’s favorite serial killer, Dexter Morgan, for his thoughts on the big twist and beyond. Let’s issue a SPOILER ALERT and cut right to it.

EW: What was your first reaction when you learned that Rita [Julie Benz] would be killed in the finale?

MH: I knew what was going to happen probably three or four weeks before it happened. As far as the how, that was much closer to the day of. I thought it was brilliant. I was really proud of the writers, and the network, for not backing away from so bold a step. It really propels us forward in a way that we wouldn’t have enjoyed otherwise. And what it could mean for the character is really wide open.

EW: This twist does open all sorts of possibilities. Will Dexter raise his son as a single dad? And just as he was showing signs of real humanity, does he now turn even darker?

MH: Does he shut the door on that? Is he like, “Well, it bit me in the a–. My father was right”? And if that’s the conclusion, what does that mean? I don’t necessarily mean to say that that will be the conclusion. It remains to be seen. It’s a difficult thing to wrap your imagination and mind around a trauma that severe. I don’t know what it’s going to do to the guy.

EW: What was it like to film the bathroom scene in which Dexter discovers Rita in the tub with Harrison nearby?

MH: It was tough. The fact is when you watch it, it’s sort of lyrical slo-mo, but the actual shooting of it was much more frantic and to the point. Coming in, seeing this baby in the blood, turning my head, seeing Rita there, realizing what’s happened, picking up the baby, leaving the room — it happened much more quickly than [how] the scene plays. But it was horrifying. It’s the kind of thing that only in its aftermath can you begin to deal with. In one way or another, Dexter will be reeling from it for a long time to come. But Julie in that tub was just heartbreaking — and the baby on the floor. It was very somber. And also very secretive. Some of the people on set had just gotten pages. So I think everyone was quietly in a private way processing what we were shooting, what this meant for the show, what this meant for Julie.

EW: Executive producer Clyde Phillips said that Julie was “greatly disappointed” to learn the fate of her character. Did you and Julie talk about that?

MH: We talked about her sadness at leaving, but when it came to the scenes, we knew we had a story to tell and we also didn’t want to do anything to telegraph it — not that you possibly could. I think it was beyond Dexter’s imagination that such a thing could happen. The last scene we shot together was the scene where Dexter tells Rita that he wants to believe that he can be his own master and be a master of his compulsion, so it felt like an appropriate way to say goodbye to that relationship…. [Julie] was really sacrificing her job for the story telling vitality of the show. I must say, my first reaction [to the big twist] was about Julie: “What is our family going to be like without her?” From a story telling standpoint it was a really bold idea, but as far as losing her as a member of ensemble, it was a blow for all of us.

EW: In that last conversation between Dexter and Rita, Dexter seemed as human as we’ve seen him.

MH: Had this season not ended the way it ended, there’s almost a sense that Dexter is entertaining the thought that maybe he’s going to get this out of his system. That if he kills Trinity, who’s left to kill? I think he’s entertaining the notion that maybe he’s done. [But] with this season ending the way it ends — and Dexter experiencing this appetite for vengeance that he can’t satiate — all bets are off on that front.

EW: What sticks out to you about the scene in which Dexter finally kills Trinity?

MH: It’s a scene that John [Lithgow] and I pretty much knew was coming. We definitely didn’t want the scene in any way to telegraph what Dexter would ultimately discover. We certainly wanted it to be unique among the kills. On the one hand Dexter is killing the most formidable target he’s ever come against, and there’s a sense of victory and pride that goes along with that. And yet while there’s a real repulsion to the Trinity Killer, there’s a simultaneous attraction and appetite for connection that goes throughout their relationship and maybe comes to a head when Dexter tries to get some counsel from him that he can’t receive from anyone else about how to move forward with his life. And just the twisted, everything-turned-on-its-head nature of that kind of plea in the midst of a scene where he’s going to take a hammer claw to the guy’s head was delicious. We tried to navigate all those twists and turns, and have the malice definitely there but not give short shrift to the real appetite for connection and counsel that was alive in Dexter. And of course for John it was the way he played what is revealed to be a double meaning through a lot of what he’s saying to Dexter was really fun for him, and obviously tremendously effective in his hands.

EW: What did you like most about the Trinity-Dexter relationship?

MH: Certainly the Trinity killer storyline went a long way in creating a sense of intrigue. He was without question the most formidable foe or target that Dexter had ever encountered, so that vitalized Dexter’s fundamental need to kill… I loved the levels of it — the subtextual levels, the fact that Dexter was presenting himself as something other than who he actually is, with the full knowledge that the Trinity Killer was doing the same, and yet there were still so many secrets for Dexter to uncover about Trinity. There were always things to be learned and these layers of intrigue beneath the surface. John and I had such a great time playing those scenes. He’s just so incredibly talented, nuanced in his work, intelligent, and he brings such a genuine sense of play to the table. I think he had a blast doing the show and really infected all of us with a sense of play and enthusiasm.

EW: Looking back at the season, what was your favorite scene?

MH: That’s a tough one… but that Thanksgiving episode was like the worst Thanksgiving ever captured on film. And it went horribly wrong [so] quickly. Obviously the son’s finger was broken and the daughter had hit on Dexter and the mother had been okay with it. A lot of seeds were planted. When we sat at that table and he said, “Shut up, c—,” to his wife — I mean, within thirty seconds I’ve got him on the floor with a knife saying, “I should have f—ing killed you when I had the chance!” That was a lot of fun. As far as the giddy laughter goes, it was probably higher that day than ever. We were just like, “This is so insane!” We had a really good time that day.

EW: How many more seasons of Dexter can there be?

MH: We’re definitely going to do one more — beyond that, I don’t know. This show is as popular as it’s ever been and I’m sure there’s a desire on the network’s part to keep that ball rolling, but I take these things one episode at a time…. This thing can’t go on indefinitely, and yet it’s gone on in ways that I never could have imagined, so I would like to believe that it can continue.
