Microsoft has released an early preview copy of its new operating system, Windows 7.

The release follows in the wake of Vista, which has been subject to fierce criticism from a number of users.

When Vista launched in January 2007, many complained that it ran slowly and failed to work at all with some programs and devices.

Corporate customers have been slow to switch from Windows XP to Vista, although Microsoft said that the operating system had an unfair press, and that it enjoyed record sales.

Despite this Microsoft has extended the life of Windows XP so PC makers can continue selling it to those that do not want to upgrade.

Visually, Windows 7 has a lot in common with Windows Vista

Windows Vista took more than five years to develop but Windows 7 is likely to arrive within a couple of years.

Microsoft’s VP, Steven Sinofsky, described Windows 7 as an “exciting new version” and claimed it would deliver a more personalised experience.

With Windows 7, Microsoft has added a range of new functions including:

A new taskbar to give more rapid access to files and programs.
A feature called HomeGroup, allowing users easy sharing of data across PCs and other devices in the home.
Support for devices such as cameras, printers, and mobile phones with a product called Device Stage offering a single window to manage tasks for each device.
Windows Touch - software for touch screen devices that enables users to use different gestures to perform tasks.
Improvements to some applications, such as MS Paint, and Calculator.

Microsoft’s chief software architect Ray Ozzie said Windows 7 would be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

The new operating system is scheduled for release in 2010 and the advance code still had limited functionality. A widely released public trial, or beta, version is expected to be available in early 2009.

To test Microsoft’s claims BBC News gave a copy of the early version of Windows 7 to Alex Watson, editor of Custom PC.

The early version made a good impression on Mr Watson, who described it as “quick, snappy, and reliable”.

Uphill struggle

Given the popularity of Windows XP and the plethora of issues that came with the launch of Windows Vista, Microsoft may have a tough job persuading users to upgrade - noted Kelvyn Taylor, editor of Personal Computer World.

“The problem is that they [Microsoft] have to overcome the damage - perception wise at least - that Windows Vista caused. And that will be an uphill struggle.

“People are comfortable with XP, so there will have to be something significant in Windows 7 to persuade people to migrate over, ” he said.

“Pricing, response time, and reliability are all issues that will need to be addressed. If Microsoft do that, then they’re in with half a chance. Otherwise Windows 7 will end up as little more than Vista 2 Mark II.”

How to use Windows Live Writer as a portable USB application?

Now this was one functionality that I desperately wanted. So if you are a blogger, who uses the great Windows Live Writer, you will be surprised as well as happy to know that you can use Windows Live Writer as a portable USB application!! That means that you don’t need to install it on each and every computer you use to post. Just plug the USB and play (oops…blog!!) :-) This tools does actually make Windows Live Writer portable!

You will first need to install Windows Live Writer to obtain all of the program files. And if you don’t use this software for blogging, I can bet that you are missing something really cool.

So, after you’ve installed Windows Live Writer, download WLWPortable3.zip and extract the contents to your USB drive. Finally, copy all of the files and directories from C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Writer to the WindowsLiveWriterPortable\App\WindowsLiveWriter directory on your USB drive.

To run Windows Live Writer Portable, just launch WindowsLiveWriterPortable.exe from your portable drive.

Microsoft encourages its employees to blog. In fact it has a dedicated blog to each of its products at Spaces.Live.com to encourage more interaction between creators and end users. But what happens when the details of a product is leaked far ahead of schedule? Thats excatly what happened when the details of Live Search 2.0 ahead of the next week Searchification event of unveiling its details officialy to reports. Windows Live program manager Akram Hussein in his personal blog demonstrated how the new Live Search handles searches for digital cameras, showing not just product details, but also reviews. Also a search for “Brad Pitt” shows his popularity rating. Much of the changes of the new look and feel has bee gradually appearing on the site. The blog has ever since been pulled down and Akram Hussein has posted an apology saying that the screenshots were from a test version of the new Live and not the final verion.

Microsoft is all set for a headon clash with Adobe Flex using its new Silverlight technology to build rich applications on web. Kurtz writes with word that Microsoft is about to follow in Adobe’s footsteps by releasing the source code to part of its Silverlight technology. The news comes less than a week after Adobe announced plans to open source the Flex SDK.
Microsoft is hungry to build the developer base for its rich Internet app tools, if it can. Wired.com Writes “Not to be outdone by Adobe’s announcement of a desktop media player, Microsoft has unveiled its long rumored Flash competitor, Silverlight. Silverlight is new browser plug-in (formerly known by the awkward name, Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere) scheduled for release as a public beta at the upcoming Mix07 conference later this month. Silverlight is a media player that can run web applications on both Windows and the Mac in IE, Firefox and Safari (Opera users are apparently out of luck). As with Adobe’s Flash, Silverlight will also have development tools for designers and developers to create embedded content. While Microsoft claims Silverlight is a better way to embed the Windows Media Video format in the browser, with the majority of web users already able to access media, like YouTube videos, via Flash, Microsoft may face an uphill battle trying to win over users. On the plus side, Silverlight will reportedly be a paltry 2MB download. Silverlight will also feature tight integration with Microsoft’s .NET platform, enabling developers to apply their existing .NET knowledge to web video. The other advantage Microsoft is touting for Silverlight over Adobe’s Flash player is the use of vector graphics which allows for better video resolution during full screen playback. With Adobe moving onto the desktop and Microsoft taking on the browser there’s no doubt that a showdown is in the works. The success of either will likely depend on which platform can transition more users in the respective directions. Given the failure of past browser plug-ins and the existing dominance of Flash video, Adobe seems to have the easier task ahead, but it’s still to early to say who will come out on top in this one. We’ll be sure to give the lowdown on Silverlight as soon as the beta is available.

Enable Vista Readyboost For Any Pendrive

Disappointed that your pendrive does not support Readyboost on Windows Vista? Ok… a bit of basics first for those who dont know what is Readyboost. Readyboost is a technology in Windows Vista that enables the system to speed up by plugging in a USB pen drive instead of adding a RAM module. In this way you dont have to spend much on costly RAMs. But remember that you need a pen drive with good data transfer rate or else this would only slow down Vista.

Ok time to get our hands dirty. Follow the steps and dont forget to back up the registry before starting…

1. Plug in the device.
2. Open the Readyboost tab on the device properties.
3. Select “Do not retest this device”
4. Unplug the device
5. Open regedit (start->run->regedit)
6. Expand - HKLM (Local Machine)->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows NT->CurrentVersion->EMDgmt
7. Find your device.
8. Change Device Status to 2
9. Change ReadSpeedKBs to 1000
10. Change WriteSpeedKBs to 1000
11. Plug in the device.
12. Enable Readyboost!!!!

You may need to take out the device and plug it back in once more for readyboost to show up under properties. Thats all and you are done.
