Husband and Wife Pair on ‘Nip/Tuck’ Separate for New Pilots

It looks like the McNamara’s of ‘Nip/Tuck’ won’t be getting back together anytime soon. With the popular FX series wrapping its run this season, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that both Dylan Walsh and Joely Richardson, who played the couple, have scored roles in new pilots.

One of the fun things about long-running series coming to an end is speculating on what kind of roles the actors will wind up in next. While some go to movies, and some seem to fade away into behind-the-scenes work, or even other professions entirely, many immediately look to continue working on existing and new series.

After getting so familiar with seeing an actor or actress in a certain role, it can be jarring to try and imagine them as a completely different character. For example, Walsh will be going from a smooth plastic surgeon to a bad-ass government agent, while Richardson is transforming into a high-powered attorney.

Walsh has been a hot commodity since word came down that ‘Nip/Tuck’ would end after its seventh season. The pilot he settled on is ‘ATF,’ set up at CBS. In it, Walsh plays an ATF agent (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) who now must balance his work, hunting down the most dangerous fugitives in the country, with playing father to his teenage daughter who’s suddenly re-entered his life.

It’s a Jerry Bruckheimer-produced legal drama for Richardson. ABC’s ‘The Whole Truth’ looks to explore both sides of the legal process, with equal emphasis on the defense and prosecution sides of trial work. Richardson is tapped to play Kathryn Pearle, a successful New York prosecutor. The production team is so committed to Richardson, that should ‘Truth’ go to series, they will move everything to New York to better accommodate her living situation.

On the eve of Nip/Tuck’s series finale, two of its stars are moving on to the next phase of their careers.

Dylan Walsh has been tapped to headline CBS’ Untitled Michael Dinner Pilot, while Joely Richardson has joined ABC’s The Whole Truth.

The Untitled Michael Dinner Pilot, originally titled ATF, centers on an ATF agent (Walsh) who’s struggling to balance career and family.

The Whole Truth, meanwhile, chronicles the building of a case from the perspective of both the defense and prosecution. Richardson will play the prosecuting attorney.

Nip/Tuck Season 7 Episode 7 ‘Christian Troy II’ Recap

As ‘Nip/Tuck‘ winds down (if you can believe it, there’s only two episodes left), an episode like ‘Christian Troy II’ (the first Christian-as-patient episode was in season two) was inevitable. Despite their numerous similarities, the one thing that Christian has always had more of than Sean is feelings of inadequacy. Granted, when you consider the tragedies he’s endured (being molested by his father and getting sodomized by The Carver both come to mind), it’s not like he lacks a reason for not always feeling 100% about himself.

For the most part, Christian has risen above these feelings by becoming one of TV’s most superficial characters. But it’s good to know that even he still has doubts about himself, and more importantly, what he does for a living.

A week after we saw Christian and Sean duke it out in front of Dr. Griffin, it seemed as though their business was about to implode because of each other. After tonight’s episode, we saw a different side — McNamara/Troy might be near its end because of the business itself. It’s a smart observation that Ryan Murphy and Co. would have been remiss to not mention.

Think about it. There’s a defined social stigma that comes with plastic surgery that didn’t exist ten years ago. How many times have you walked down the street and laughed to yourself at some woman who literally looked plastic? The thriving business that Sean and Christian once capitalized on isn’t the same. In true, American can-do fashion, we’ve found a simpler, cheaper, and quicker way to look younger with the advent of Botox and other facial injectables. But, as we saw with Sean’s bruising, they’re not always a safer alternative.

Working on that overarching theme, many of McNamara/Troy’s older patients made an appearance in this episode, including the Ayers, a real estate couple that wanted all their surgeries reversed because of how society saw them — not youthful, but rather self-loathing. Everything Sean and Christian knew was turned upside down, and even more so when Christian went under the knife to document how simple a face-lift is. His dream sequence was one of the first we’ve seen in quite some time on ‘Nip/Tuck,’ though, the best one still goes to Julia’s “what if she had married Christian instead” fantasy from season two.

Christian’s dream brought together numerous elements from his past in one helluva depressing montage. His father (great casting with Robert Davi) showed up along with Annette Wainwright and Lulu Grandiron (Joan Van Ark and Donna Mills reprising their season five roles, though Lulu was missing her cat eyes). It all revolved around the end of plastic surgery and Christian’s belief that maybe he played a part in that. Something that even Joan Rivers returned to berate him for. And for those questioning the point of Rivers making a short return appearance, don’t forget the reason behind her original season two visit to Sean and Christian — she wanted all of her plastic surgeries reversed, though at the time, they convinced her otherwise.

Nip/Tuck Season 7 Episode 6 ‘Dr. Griffin’ Recap

Saving the best for last, the final season of ‘Nip/Tuck‘ is firing on all cylinders right now and ‘Dr. Griffin’ easily stands out as one of the final run’s, and possibly the series’, finest episodes. Highlighting the symbiotic, and often parasitic, relationship that Drs. McNamara and Troy have shared over the years, ‘Dr. Griffin’ could have been a boring romp as our two favorite plastic surgeons sat on a therapist’s couch and laid their feelings bare. Instead, what resulted, was a charged exploration of how these two people really feel about each other.

On many levels, Sean and Christian’s dialogue trudged thorough familiar territory but the key was that it was familiar to fans — not them. While we knew about Christian forging Sean’s signature for the loan or Sean’s affair with Kimber right before her suicide, they didn’t. Seeing them react to these revelations that have been simmering in the background for weeks was nothing short of riveting. Hats off to Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon for injecting a burst of energy into two characters that have grown stale because we know them so well. Seeing Sean and Christian like this is a reminder of what made ‘Nip/Tuck’ so good in the first place.

On top of their individual discussions, it was great to see Liz and Matt brought into the fold as well. Liz held a mirror up to both of them, though what they saw only seemed to shock Sean. For as smart as he is, to still think that he’s somehow above Christian is comical.

Matt’s appearance was less shocking as his decision to cut ties with both his fathers for good was a long time coming. Not sure what value there was in introducing his new fiancee though — walking away from his family was proof enough that he’s starting over. That being said, nothing regarding Matt’s future is set in stone with Ava (Famke Janssen) set to return in a few weeks. The only missing piece here was Julia, but there’s sure to be a final confrontation with her involved before the season is out. With the history she shares with both Sean and Christian, she deserves more than a therapy session.
