The Office Season 6 Episode 18 ‘St. Patrick’s Day’ Recap

Watching this episode, I got the nagging feeling that the writers made a grave mistake three years ago when they had Jim leave the Scranton branch for Stamford, then come back. When the branches merged, Jim became the branch’s number two under Michael, and he actually had a scintilla of authority over Dwight.

Sure, he pulled pranks on Dwight over the ensuing years, and Dwight tried to end Jim on any number of occasions. But there was always an implication that the two weren’t work equals. Jim becoming co-manager made things worse.

But now they’re equals again. And seeing Dwight’s MegaDesk, followed by Jim creating the incorrectly-named QuadDesk, made me realize why the early episodes of ‘The Office’ work so well. Jim and Dwight getting under each other’s skin was a reminder of every irritating cubicle neighbor I’ve ever had, and that dynamic was missing. It was good to see it back tonight, but it got me annoyed that it really hasn’t been around since season two.

Even though this was the third episode she was in, it was still oddly disconcerting to see Kathy Bates sitting in the conference room of Dunder-Mifflin Scranton. I don’t know… I just didn’t buy her as Jo Bennett, hard-working and slightly crazy CEO of Sabre. It was just… Kathy Bates, playing a role she can play in her sleep.

It’s not like other guests have been unable to integrate themselves into the DM environment; I completely bought into Idris Elba as the all-business Charles Miner, for instance. But, really, Jo could have been played by any actress with an outsized personality — Camryn Manheim, perhaps? — who could have done a similar, less distracting job.

The only time where I felt Jo as a real character was when she finally told Michael, “ENOUGH!”, as he publicly kissed up to her during her town hall meeting. We know that Michael has no ability to take empty social pleasantries for what they are; he literally thought Jo was looking forward to him visiting her Florida compound. That was the kind of discomfort that ‘Office’ fans are used to seeing from Michael. Instead of demonstrating how hard he works, he’d rather suck up, to the point of annoyance.

But… Michael has matured over the years, hasn’t he? After learning from Gabe how off-kilter Jo really was, he decided to stand up to her and dismiss his crew to enjoy St. Patrick’s Night. Did he realize, though, that doing that was actually what Jo wanted to see from him? Will this empower him to be a boss with some backbone? Probably not; obliviousness is Michael’s strong suit. But it was at least good to see him defend his people and then join them — with Todd Packer! — for some green beer and dry-humping.

Back to Jim and Dwight… Is this the first time that Jim was aware that Dwight was trying to get to him, but acknowledged that it was working, anyway? That’s what having kids does to people… it puts everything else in perspective. So Dwight’s screaming the lyrics to ‘Cats in the Cradle’ was cliche, but Jim’s cynic filter has been compromised by his newborn daughter. I’d imagine Dwight’s going to take advantage of it in the coming weeks.

Good to see Erin and Andy finally go on that magical first date… which has to be perfect because, “according to ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ that’s the date your kids are going to wait patiently to hear about, so you better have a good story.” How true, as most ‘HIMYM’ fans can confirm. I want to hear more of Erin’s sad backstory, though… she was a foster kid with an odd relationship with her foster brother, she was only sick once, from the ages of three to six, she thinks a British accent is Irish… I want to hear more. Anyway, this is going to be stumbling, bumbling relationship, but at least it’s progressing now.

The Office: Jenna Fischer Reveals Origin of Baby Name

Prior to the Big Baby Episode, some Office
fans thought Baby Halpert’s name would come from the Office universe (Michael Scott or Dwight or Mifflin). While that didn’t happen, Jenna Fischer says the name of her first on-screen baby with Jim (John Krasinski) – Cecelia Marie Halpert – is even closer to her personal life than she imagined.

Talking to People.com, Fischer revealed that the week when The Office was filming “The Delivery” was also when she became an aunt for the very first time.

“Literally the day we shot Pam’s going to the hospital, my sister was going to the hospital,” she says, “and the same day we shot me coming home from the hospital, my sister came home from the hospital. It was crazy!

Fischer, 36, adds that her dad, who coincidentally shares the same name with her on-screen hubby, had one daughter going through it for real and another faking it.

The timing had Fischer lobbying to The Office writers to name her on-screen baby Cecelia Marie, the name of her first niece.

“I got to name my baby!” says Fischer, who successfully lobbied The Office writers to use the name Cecelia. “I said I would really love to name the baby after my niece, so I did.”

The real challenge, however, was not letting anyone in on the secret. She wanted to wait until her family saw “The Delivery” episode themselves.

She explains: “I haven’t told my parents and will let them watch the episode. I’m just going to sit by the phone and they are going to be watching it in Missouri, so they see it two hours ahead, and I’m just going to time it out and sit by the phone when the part comes on because I know I’m going to get a screaming phone call!”

Last week, we joined in on a conference call with two of the lovely, hilarious actresses that make The Office cast
one of the funniest and most cohesive on television.

Ellie Kemper (Erin) and Angela Kinsey (Angela) spoke to reporters about their characters’ singing careers, baby-making plans and more. We’ve included a few excerpts from the chat below:

Kemper, on joining the show: It is strange to have watched a show on your futon for five years and then to be on it is completely surreal. And I think that it’s so weird because I go to work and I see these people every day so now I’m like, you know, they’re real people… but everyone couldn’t couldn’t be warmer.

Kemper, on more hits from Subtle Sexuality: I am a big fan. I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’ve heard rumors that they are going to write another song and maybe make another video, but I’m not sure that those rumors are accurate.

Kinsey, on Angela as a mother: I can’t imagine Angela Martin as a mother I would love to see her try to nurture a human. I think that would be a lot of fun to watch her go through those motions…. it definitely would be a great idea.

Kinsey, on Erin dating Andy: I love the Andy and Erin. Like there’s such a sweet innocence about them. I mean, they’re kind of both buffoons… [on a future episode], you see a whole another side of Ellie’s character…. And it’s hysterical.

Remember how the one hour Pam/Jim wedding episode was considered by many — including me — to be ‘The Office’s’ best episode of the season? Well, the one-hour Pam/Jim baby episode definitely isn’t in that category.

Why? Because, through a lot of the episode, Pam and Jim displayed none of the charm that made us fall in sitcom love with them in the first place. To compound the situation, they’re being written into situations that would make fans of ‘Yes, Dear’ cringe. But we’ll get to that later.

As usual with most one-hour ‘Office’ episodes, the first half was better than the second. But even the first half of this one had some problems.

Not sure why the writers decided to have Pam give birth halfway through, then spend the second half of the episode with the pair during those first couple of tough days in the hospital. Maybe it was their usual desire to make hour-long episodes play out like complete half-hour episodes when they’re broken up for syndication.

They got their wish; it really felt like two separate episodes, but not in a good way. Yes, we needed to see Jim and Pam struggle through the first couple of days of being parents, but did we really need to see them struggling to the point where Pam mistakenly breast-feeds her roommate’s baby? Did we need to see Jim get jealous of the handsome lactation specialist as he manipulated Pam’s nipples to get the baby to latch on? Both of those plot points seemed to come out of the Old Sitcom Joke Factory instead of something from the clever ‘Office’ writing staff. It smacked of filler.

But, then again, the writers haven’t had any idea what to do with PB & J since the wedding. Two episodes ago, they were having daycare-searching mishaps. Now, Pam’s obsessed with “nipple confusion” and such a difficult patient that the nurse says “You know everything, now” in a snide tone. It’s almost as if Michael was the new mom, not Pam.

I’m not even sure I buy Pam’s insistence on making it to midnight in order to get an extra day in the hospital, even though she looked like she was going to drop the kid right there in the lunch room. Pam has usually been pretty rational, and even through her pregnancy she’s been cool-headed. It felt so uncharacteristic of her to do something so reckless. Jim going nuts, I can see. Jim diapering everything in sight, I can also see (loved Angela’s reaction when Jim diapered her cat). But Pam pressing on through “Ultra Feast” even though her water broke was insane.

I did like how the entire office scrambled to get them out the door; they really are like a family. Even Michael was reasonable, and Jam seemed to trust him to get them to the hospital. I bet he wishes he didn’t enter that room while Pam was in the extremes of labor. Some things just can’t be unseen. I even give Dwight a pass for destroying their kitchen after seeing the mold; at least he rebuilt it. Hopefully, Jam will wash their sheets before they settle in for their first night.

Notice I’m not mentioning the second-half plot where Michael takes it upon himself to play matchmaker, citing his success with Pam and Jim. It felt like a means to an end, but that’s about it. It finally got us to the point where Andy — expert at hiding behind plants — finally got the stones to ask Erin out. Even his last cute, indirect attempt got him nowhere, because he for some reason didn’t realize that you send a fax to the same number you’re sending it from. I’m just happy that the writers finally cleared all the artificial barriers and got these crazy kids together.

The Office – Jim and Pam’s Baby Might Not Be The Only One

In the hour-long “Office” episode, which of course focuses on the birth of their little tyke, there are two other couples that also enjoy time at center stage.

Both of said couples are pairs we’ve rooted for in the past. And one of them may have their own little baby on the way.

Whaaa?

I will say no more.

Only that if you’re a long-time fan of the show, you’ll enjoy what’s happening. And the Halpert-parents-to-be might make you cry a couple times. Happy tears.

The Office: What Should Jim & Pam Title Their Tot?

So now that one of America’s favorite TV couples is about to have a baby, we have to ask: What will they name it? The Office is a comedy after all, so the possibilities are endless. Will Jim and Pam go the celebrity baby name route and name their child after a fruit? Orange Halpert-Beasley really doesn’t have a nice ring to it. Or will someone in the office be the baby’s namesake Michael Scott Halpert, anyone?
