TeamViewer is an excellent screen-sharing and file-transfer app that can be used to facilitate business collaborations as well as helping distraught relatives diagnose and cure computer problems. Along with being free for noncorporate use, it gives users precisely the tools they need to share screens securely, send files with a minimum of hassle, control access rights, and even flip which user has control.

The options available while you're in control work smoothly. You can maximize the pane that the other computer's screen is visible in, as well as utilize several smart options from a drop-down toolbar in the center of the window. A big X lets you close the connection, while the Actions button lets you switch whose in control, disable remote input, and reboot remotely. The View menu hides options to adjust the screen resolution, the optimization toward speed or quality, and control multiple-monitor displays.

When you log in, you're given an access code and a password. Sharing those allows your computer to be controlled by the level you set it to: remote support, presentation, file transfer, or VPN. The TeamViewer servers remember which computers you've connected to, so reconnecting to previously shared computers happens faster. TeamViewer also has a Web-based version, for remote connecting to home from public computer. Even the installation process is impressive. Users can toggle admin rights, can opt out of running at startup, and can opt into installing the TeamViewer VPN driver for more secure screensharing. Overall, TeamViewer makes screensharing and file-sharing as fluid and unobtrusive as it should be.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.42 (free version)

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective freeware antimalware tool. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 8 minutes even with other high-resource programs running. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

The app has some nice features rolled in, too. It supports multiple drive scanning including networked drives, context menu options including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and the FileAssassin option under the More Tools section for removing locked files. The interface is simple, but pleasant-looking and well-organized. Tabs live just below the oversized logo, with few options per tab to keep down the clutter. The installation process was fast enough, but interestingly offered up the well-kept changelog and an instant definition file update.

Do note that the real-time protection is restricted to the paid version, as is the scheduler for updates and scans. Overall, though, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a responsive malware remover that does what it should with a minimum of fuss.

Although GTR 2 was only released a couple of months ago, Swedish outfit SimBin has been working flat out on the follow-up title, Race - The WTCC Game. In many respects the two titles look and feel similar, but there are crucial differences that make Race a compelling game in its own right.

The game features fully licensed drivers, vehicles, and circuits.

Race's most striking feature is that it displays a wonderful attention to detail. Clearly it's a game that's been developed by racing fans, and if you follow the World Touring Car Championship in real life, you'll feel right at home as soon as the game is loaded. The game has an official license from the sport's governing body, the FIA, so all of the driver and vehicle data is correct as of the end of the 2006 season.

That means that it's possible to race as one of a whole host of real-life drivers--world champion Andy Priaulx included--in a range of car models. Alfa Romeos, BMWs, Seats, Chevrolets, Peugeots, and Hondas are all in there, lovingly re-created from the suspension upward. They all look just like the real thing, and it's fair to say that no two cars drive in quite the same way, whether that be from the differences between front- and rear-wheel drive, the weight of the car, or the number of gears. Jumping between any two vehicles, you'll find a subtly different experience. Something that adds to that feeling of variety is the fully modeled car interiors--with seats, windows, and dashboards all accurate--and you'll even find fully functioning windscreen wipers that will clean away dust on a dry day or wipe away water on a wet one.

Weather plays a big part in the game and can be set to dry, rain, heavy rain, or changeable, and it's possible to see the weather conditions vary as a race progresses. The conditions on the track have a massive impact on how you need to drive, and if you want to stand any chance at all in wet races, you'll need to get your racing line just right, not to mention your braking zones and acceleration points.

But even if you practice all of those excessively, you still need to make sure that the car is set up correctly. As you'd expect from a game that's so detailed, practically every aspect of the car's mechanical settings can be altered--the ride height, the brake balance, the tyre compound, the springs, the wing settings, and much, much more. If you happen to have a degree in automotive engineering, it'll be a breeze. If you don't, it can all be pretty daunting on the one hand, and a severe racing handicap on the other.

The primary problem here is that there's very little explanation as to what any of the settings actually do. There's no tooltip that explains how changing the tyre pressures will affect braking or how the gear ratios can give you better top speed. If you have played similar racing games in the past, from Geoff Crammond's Formula One Grand Prix onward, you might have a working knowledge of the basics, but beyond that, you'll need to put in some serious research time to get to grips with it.

You can make things a little easier on yourself by adjusting pretty much anything you can think of in the game options. If the opposition is proving too tough, simply reduce their ability next time around, or even just have fewer cars on the track. Tailoring the game to your own skill level can take some time to achieve, but when you get it right, you'll feel much more at home.

Full user registration - WordPress has a built-in user registration system that (if you choose) can allow people to register and maintain profiles and leave authenticated comments on your blog. You can optionally close comments for non-registered users. There are also plugins that hide posts from lower level users.
Password Protected Posts - You can give passwords to individual posts to hide them from the public. You can also have private posts which are viewable only by their author.
Easy installation and upgrades - Installing WordPress and upgrading from previous versions and other software is a piece of cake. Try it and you'll wonder why all web software isn't this easy.
Easy Importing - We currently have importers for Movable Type, Textpattern, Greymatter, Blogger, and b2. Work on importers for Nucleus and pMachine are under way.
XML-RPC interface - WordPress currently supports an extended version of the Blogger API, MetaWeblog API, and finally the MovableType API. You can even use clients designed for other platforms like Zempt.
Workflow - You can have types of users that can only post drafts, not publish to the front page.
Typographical niceties - WordPress uses the Texturize engine to intelligently convert plain ASCII into typographically correct XHTML entities. This includes quotes, apostrophes, ellipses, em and en dashes, multiplication symbols, and ampersands. For information about the proper use of such entities see Peter Sheerin's article The Trouble With Em 'n En.
Intelligent text formatting - If you've dealt with systems that convert new lines to line breaks before you know why they have a bad name: if you have any sort of HTML they butcher it by putting tags after every new line indiscriminately, breaking your formatting and validation. Our function for this intelligently avoids places where you already have breaks and block-level HTML tags, so you can leave it on without worrying about it breaking your code.
Multiple authors - WordPress' highly advanced user system allows up to 10 levels of users, with different levels having different (and configurable) privileges with regard to publishing, editing, options, and other users.
Bookmarklets - Cross-browser bookmarklets make it easy to publish to your blog or add links to your blogroll with a minimum of effort.

Ping away - WordPress supports pinging Ping-O-Matic, which means maximum exposure for your blog to search engines.
