On Thursday evening, February 16, 2012 from 7-8:30pm, Julia Greene will speak about Lynn’s role in the abolitionist movement of the 1830’s. The fight to end slavery captured Lynners’ imaginations and when Frederick Douglass moved to Lynn to join the fight, the then-small town was thrust onto the national stage. In his five years in Lynn, Douglass became internationally known as an abolitionist leader, intellectual author, and escaped slave who still did not have his freedom. Julia Greene’s talk covers the rise of the abolitionist movement in Lynn’s Quaker community, Frederick Douglass’ time in Lynn, and the local and international campaigns he and the Lynn Abolitionists joined to fight racism in the North and slavery in the South. The talk will shed light on national abolitionist leaders’ ties to Lynn including: William Lloyd Garrison, Abby Kelly Foster, Wendell Phillips, Sojourner Truth and the Grimke sisters and highlights the role Lynn’s Hutchinson Family and noted leaders James N. Buffum, Alonzo Lewis, Francis and Henry Newhall, and John Bassett Alley played in the Abolitionist movement.

Julia Greene is working on an independent history project on Lynn’s abolitionists to illuminate this important but little-known era of Lynn’s history. Ms. Greene grew up in Lynn and makes the city her home. She is on the Lynn Historical Commission and teaches history, speech and state and local government at North Shore Community College. In addition to this lecture she is currently working with the Lynn Museum on a Civil War anniversary exhibit slated for May.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Lynn Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Admission is free for museum members and students and $5 for non-members. Schubert’s Winterreise
Sunday, February 19 | 4:30 PM
First Lutheran Church | 280 Broadway | www.flc-lynn.org

Just in time for the snow (that came and went), First Lutheran Church invites you to a free performance of Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter Journey). This piece will be performed by George Heath, an accomplished singer from New York, accompanied by David Greatrix,
our Director of Music, on piano. The concert will be preceded by a
brief lecture on the piece at 4:00 PM and followed by refreshments.

First Lutheran Church is a handicapped-accessible congregation that
is welcoming and affirming of all people. Located in Wyoma Square, just
behind Walgreens. On-site and street parking available; MBTA Bus 434,
435, 436.

About the piece:

Schubert’s Winterreise is an exploration of the hardships of
winter. It also explores the feelings of lost love, regret, and the
acceptance of one’s ultimate fate. The season of winter serves as an
allegory for the dark recesses of one’s own mind. Occasionally we are
greeted by the flower filled hopes of May, or sitting warmly next to the
hearth. These however, are fleeting thoughts, for as soon as we are
comfortably greeted by the glow of a cheer filled home, we are once
again trudging in the snow consoled only the rattling of chains and the
howling of dogs. Thoughts of the one we loved will cause tears which
will melt the snow below us, only to be frozen over again.

Composed in 1827, and published in 1828, Schubert’s Winterreise stands
as one of the most monumental achievements in German Lied. A cycle of 24
songs, Schubert masterfully set the stirring poetry of Willhelm Müller.
The pianist serves not as accompanist, but rather as a partner in
creating effects. Beloved by singers and pianists alike, Winterreise provides a haunting journey for all who partake in its presentation.

Arts After Hours (AAH) announces the 2nd Annual Bourbon Street event to be held on Saturday, February 18th, 2012 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the LynnArts building at 25 Exchange Street, Lynn, MA. Admission is $15 per person and includes one complimentary food item. Additional food, beer, and wine will be sold for $5 each. Live music and art will fill the evening. Tickets are available at http://artsafterhours.com or by calling 781-205-4010. Proceeds from Bourbon Street will help to raise money for AAH’s remaining 2012 theater season.

Bourbon Street brings the traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration to Lynn with live music from Elephant Wrecking Ball; creole culinary creations by local resident and owner of GFB Consulting Greg Gray; a fantastic beer and wine menu; and local artists and vendors.
Elephant Wrecking Ball, with members from the Berklee College of Music, is known for their brassy New Orleans-style sound and special trombone effects. “We can’t wait to have them back to Lynn,” says Kevin Parker, AAH Production Manager. “This band is the kind of unique professional entertainment that fits very well with Arts After Hours’ mission.”

Guests will also enjoy special hands-on art projects thanks to Artists and Craftsman Supply store in Saugus. Artists from Lynn and Montserrat College, alongside other premiere vendors, will sell their wares. Lynn photographer Cheryl Ransom has participated in AAH since its inception. “I love Arts After Hours events. They’re always so much fun,” says Ransom. “Food, music, great people, and lots to do. I look forward to Bourbon Street!”

After two successful musical productions in Downtown Lynn, Arts After Hours is excited to host this Mardi Gras celebration and and raise money for the remainder of its 2012 theater season. To that end, AAH is excited to launch THE AAH CARD, which will be available to Bourbon Street guests at a very special price of $50. THE AAH CARD admits the buyer to all Arts After Hours 2012 events--a 50% discount off each regular ticket price. THE AAH CARD will retail at a 25% discount or $75 moving forward.

“The AAH Card will provide an entire season of quality, local theatre for just half the cost of one Broadway ticket,” says Corey Jackson, Managing Director of Arts After Hours. “We have received extraordinary support over the past year, from our amazing audience members to our corporate sponsors. It’s very encouraging to welcome thousands of these people to Downtown Lynn each season. The Downtown economy is truly starting to benefit from this crowd--and that’s just as important to us as offering excellent artistic and theatrical events at an affordable price. We hope that the AAH Card will help to increase the number of people coming to Lynn for unique artistic experiences.”
I expected to see a scenario with deep cuts to service and another scenario with extreme fare increases. I expected to not agree with either proposal but would be convinced of the necessity and figure out which side of the fence I would eventually be on. I got none of what I expected.

Instead, I got a show!!!! How fun? A complete 3 hour spectacle of absurdist theatre. I didn't even know the MBTA did shows!! I always thought they were a transportation company. The show opened with this brilliant scene where they showed these two really funny scenarios. The first scenario had insane increases in fares and 1/4 of the routes slashed. The second scenario had even more insane increase in fares and 3/4 of the routes slashed. In a surprise comedy bit, they announced that both scenarios would cut weekday service after 10PM and all weekend service. Now that's funny!!! If only they had a third scenario. Comedy is always better in threes.

There were some amazing cameos from our State Legislature, who gave very dramatic and poignant monologues (in all seriousness, I was quite impressed with Senator Tom McGee, State Rep Steve Walsh, Mayor Kennedy, and Councilor Phelan).

Since we've broken from sarcasm, let me end by saying, really? Really? You (MBTA) expect us to believe that there was any merit in what you proposed last night? You expect us to believe that all of this was not just a tactic so you can turn to the state and ask for help? Well, I hope the state does exactly that. I also hope the state takes a hard look at re-org and new management. What we have is not working. We will continue to have these useless theatrical events if we don't sit down and fix this for the long term. I urge all of you to be heard. For even if it is theatre of the absurd, I firmly believe your state legilature is listening. Call them. E-mail them. Beg them to keep Downtown Lynn alive at night and on the weekends. We can't afford these cuts and some of our neighbors and downtown businesses will suffer unimaginably by these proposals if for some reason, this mismanaged organization is allowed to do what they've put on the table.
For weeks all I can talk about is the show. Well...this month is one of those times.

A lot of people have put some blood and sweat to make this show happen and I am forever grateful. For this show, we had incredible community support including many downtown neighbors chipping in to help with sound, costumes, props, and various needs.

I just wanted to take some time out to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who even touched this show for 10 minutes. Without you, that moment in the show, wouldn't be perfect.

Thank you to everyone who came out for opening weekend and bought tickets. We had 100 more people than we had for Spelling Bee's opening weekend. This is audience growth of 20% and is a huge statement. More and more of you are discovering that you can have high quality theatre experiences without having to go into Boston. Please spread the word.

Join us on Facebook or visit our website to learn more. Coming up next we have our 2nd annual Bourbon Street party. Don't miss out on all the great happenings downtown.
The show, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, takes the audience on a hilarious roller-coaster of the trials and tribulations of connecting with the ones we choose to call sweetheart.

Don't miss this show. The blog has been quiet because we've been working day and night to make this a high quality professional night of theatre for all of you. We do this to get people into the Downtown experiencing quality arts programming and we hope you will grab dinner before hand at a local restaurant or a drink after with the cast at a local bar. Thank you, as always, for supporting Downtown Lynn.
In 3 years, we're going to have a professional Equity theatre in Downtown Lynn run by Arts After Hours. How do I know this?

Because I won't stop until it happens.

We've already proven with every event we have, with every night of theatre, with every gallery show, with every music event, receipts in Downtown restaurants go up. Yeah I have a passion for theatre, but it equals my passion for our amazing potential in Downtown Lynn.

70% of our Arts After Hours' audience is coming from outside our borders. People coming to Lynn, having a phenomenal quality experience and leaving to tell their friends. You can't beat this.

So, here's where you come in. Our next show opens on January 19th. Click on the link to artsafterhours.com or call 781-205-4010 and buy two tickets (or more) to I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. Use code "LOVE" for $5 off each ticket. Even if you don't know who you are going to bring yet, buy the tickets, and challenge yourself to introduce someone to Downtown Lynn in 2012 (could be rediscovering it yourself?).

Really great modern score, really funny dialogue and an incredible cast and production crew.

This is your chance to make a specific impact in Downtown Lynn. Come to the show. Before the show, go to a downtown restaurant. After the show, go to a Downtown Bar. Might we suggest our sponsors, The Blue Ox for dinner and Northern Nights on the Lynnway for drinks after the show.

Make this show a success, make the next one even bigger. I might even be able to squeeze that 3 year projection down a bit. Let's get a professional theatre operating in Lynn.

Happy ticket buying,
fun, dance, kickboxing and karaoke performances by “local celebrities”!
This event is a fundraiser to benefit the More Than a Number exhibition and schedule of programs at the Lynn Museum. The exhibition is scheduled to open on February 1, 2012.

While the blog writing has slowed down a bit, it has only been replaced by more activity on the streets. I hope I have even less time to write as Arts After Hours builds more and more music, visual art, and theatre in the downtown in 2012 alongside Centerboard, Lynn Museum, and LynnArts. In 2011, Arts After Hours added a full-scale musical, a cabaret music series, a jazz series, and several new visual art events including Cuba: In Form, Lynn's Got Sole and our Bourbon Street event. This activity has and will continue to encourage more development and action on the part of landlords, residents, and City Hall. All I want for Christmas is for our 15,000 unique readers of downtownlynn.com to stop and think about how they can make a positive impact on the Downtown local economy next year. It can be as easy as attending an event, bringing 3 friends to a Downtown restaurant, taking a walk to discover a new area, writing a positive story and promoting it online. I want to thank a lot of you for already taking part in many of those activities. Together, we are building something larger than we can even understand right now.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanza! (and everything else I'm missing)

Be healthy, safe, and support local in 2012!
Many of our organizations are one or two employees so we don't have the crazy office parties to look forward to this year. Almost all of our organizations couldn't do what we do without YOU! Yes you, even reading this blog makes you a part of it all. Buying a ticket is even better but we'll take any interest we can get at this stage.

Come and meet some of the folks behind the arts movement Downtown or just have a nice glass of wine and a stuffed popover or twelve. Come down at 7PM on Friday. The band Harvey Mapcase featuring songs from their CD "Three on a Match" will begin at 9PM. Every single one of you is welcome! Hope to see everyone and if we don't, have a Happy Holiday!
It's Christmas time... You know? That time of year you all pull out the cookie cutters and start melting chocolate to make goodies for your loved ones to enjoy for the entire season. Or, you are like some of us, and never quite have time with all the other hustle and bustle to get the cookies done.

Have no fear! Wicked Tasty is here.

I have had the priviledge of getting to know the crew at Wicked Tasty over the past year. They partnered on the Carolyn Cole event to produce a phenomenal pre-show spread for Arts After Hours patrons. They were instrumental is providing several summer jobs to our youth this year and just recently hosted the first pop-up dinner in Lynn, MA over at the JB Blood building.

Wicked Tasty is a shining example of Centerboard's innovation when it comes to skills and business. It's not just about counseling, budget coaching, and tax returns. They've taken a whole step further and formed this delicious startup.

This Christmas Cookie sale is a way for us to support the fantastic work they are doing. Well, that and we don't have to pretend like we're going to get around to baking ourselves.

Here's how you do it.

They answer phone orders on Monday, Tueday, Thursday from 9-5, Wednesday 12-8, and Friday from 12-4
781-598-9417 or you can e-mail Caleb at cisabella@spinlynn.org at any time to place an order.

The order form is available at this link, so read up, order up, and fill your tummies! Tis the season.
While Holiday in the Square was kicking off in Central Square, World Aids Day 2011 human ribbon ceremony was going on in Lynn City Hall. I'm consistently impressed with Harry Schnur and the kids he works with in the KAYA group. Here are some pictures from tonight's event at City Hall. Had a flash mob, a human ribbon of glow sticks and a candle-light parade. Was a beautiful thing to see so many come together for such an important reason.

Check out the flash mob that broke out!!
