The newest Arts for Arts Sake (AFAS) Art Tower is ready for Art! The tower's art will be sponsored by the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. The art will be added in the near future and their will be a ceremony to commemorate the new installation.

John Raines, veteran commercial photographer, will launch a new home accessories, art and gift shop named for the prestigious location that it will occupy at the corner of Fourth and Trade streets in downtown Winston-Salem. The new store will also offer jewelry, original photography and many one of a kind items.

Happiness Through Chocolate (Black Mountain Chocolate Factory)

For me growing up, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favorite movies, and it still is. The opening montage of all the various chocolate still makes my mouth water. So when I heard that a Chocolate Factory was opening in Downtown Winston Salem, I was beyond excited. When they joined the Partnership as a Business Member, I was privileged to be able to meet one of the owners, Brent Peters.

I was immediately charmed by his easy-going, yet passionate demeanor. He explained to me how he and his wife Dawn had wanted to come downtown to live for several years, being lured in by the walkability of our expanding Downtown, and the attractiveness of the density of urban living. They loved that Downtown, which already existed, was taking up less space and bringing in residents and businesses alike. Brent even liked the fact that the delivery of utilities was an easier process. When the kids were out of the house, Brent and Dawn made the move happily, even selling one of their cars, since they could now walk almost everywhere they needed or wanted to go. They loved it, so opening a Business Downtown was a natural next step.

They joined the Partnership and we helped them with their grand opening.

Their Mission, as it says on Facebook, is “to increase universal happiness and prosperity through ethically-sources, artisan crafted chocolate,” and Downtown is all the better for that mission.

I got a chance to go see the Link Apartments on Brookstown the other day. They’re still under construction but they should be done very soon, with move-in’s starting in August.

They are absolutely lovely apartments with a fantastic view of BB&T Ballpark, where our Winston Salem Dash play.

The insides are gorgeous with hardwood floors, and BIG kitchens and closets.

I like the tiled walls in the kitchen and the last port on the wall has USB connections, which I definitely want in my house.

I enjoyed the tour of Plant 64 yesterday with Chris Harrison and Cindy Christopher. There has been tremendous progress made in the past few months. Exciting news, they are moving in their first residential tenants in July 2014. The project will have a total of 242 apartments.

Atlantic’s Early Commitment Was Crucial to the Building’s Development

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Financial services firm Atlantic Capital Advisors LLC will be the primary tenant in the new 751 West Fourth office building that is currently under construction at the corner of Fourth and Broad streets in downtown Winston-Salem.

Atlantic Capital Advisors – which is also the external manager of Hatteras Financial Corp. and ACM Financial Trust – plans to move in September from its offices at 110 Oakwood Drive to its new downtown space.

Earlier this year, The Winston-Salem Foundation also announced that it would be relocating to 751 West Fourth.

John Reece, managing partner of Commercial Realty Advisors – the local developer, manager and leasing agent for the new five-story office building – praised Atlantic Capital for the firm’s support of downtown Winston-Salem and its ongoing resurgence:

“Without a pre-construction commitment from Atlantic Capital Advisors LLC, the 751 West Fourth development would not have happened,” Reece said. “We are very grateful for their confidence in the project and willingness to make an early and long-term commitment to the vision of 751 West Fourth.”

Michael Hough, chief executive officer of Atlantic Capital, also issued a statement:

“I can’t think of a better location to establish a permanent residence for our business. John’s locally focused approach to development was important to us and, along with the building’s attractive appearance and convenient location, makes it something we can be proud of. We are pleased to occupy 751 West Fourth alongside one of the city’s most valued institutions, The Winston-Salem Foundation, and we plan to be good neighbors to those around us.”

The 751 West Fourth building is a one-hundred-percent locally sourced development. Along with Commercial Realty Advisors as developer/manager, archSTUDIO7 is the project architect; Frank L. Blum is the general contractor; and Stimmel Associates is the civil engineer.

With Atlantic Capital Advisors and The Winston-Salem Foundation now announced as tenants, approximately 11,000 square feet of Class A office space remains available for lease at 751 West Fourth.

Wake Forest Innovation Quarter invites the public to a free Lunch and Learn program to explore the changes in downtown Winston-Salem’s food environment throughout the decades and hear about the challenges the shift has caused within the surrounding neighborhoods and African American community.

Led by Margaret Savoca of the Department of Epidemiology and Prevention at Wake Forest School of Medicine, the program will feature a film and photography exhibit entitled “The Making of Foodways & Roadways” which combines the voices of those who have lived in the downtown area throughout the years with photos of youth and archival and present day images.

The exhibit is a joint project between Wake Forest Translational Sciences Institute and Wake Forest University Documentary Film Program.
