About the Film
Urbanized is a feature-length documentary about the design of cities, which looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design and features some of the world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers. Over half the world’s population now lives in an urban area, and 75% will call a city home by 2050. But while some cities are experiencing explosive growth, others are shrinking. The challenges of balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns. Yet much of the dialogue on these issues is disconnected from the public domain.

Symphony Safari: Carnival of the Animals

At 2:00pm on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 the Winston-Salem Symphony will be presenting “Symphony Safari: Carnival of the Animals” at the K.R. Williams Auditorium. This will be the second Discovery Concert for Kids for the 2011-2012 seasons. In addition to the 2:00pm presentation, there will be pre-concert activities beginning at 1:00pm. The pre-concert activities, included in the price of admission, will include music, games, and opportunities to see animals from both the Forsyth Humane Society and the North Carolina Zoo. “Symphony Safari: Carnival of the Animals” will be conducted by Maestro Robert Moody, Music Director for the Winston-Salem Symphony, and as the title suggests, the symphony will be a musical depiction of a multitude of animals.

Ticket Prices:

Children two and under can attend for free

Single tickets: $5.00 for children, $9.00 for Adults

Tickets for both Discovery concerts, “Symphony Safari: Carnival of
the Animals” and “Space Rocks!”(April 28, 2012) are $24.00 for each adult and includes a free child subscription. Additional child subscriptions can be purchased for $5.00.

Spotted: new tenant in old Kernal Kustard space

Greg Carlyle, owner of the Millennium Center, was seen today making interior changes to the old Kernal Kustard space located at 310 W. 4th St. It was confirmed that he is the new leaseholder of the space. Details coming soon!

Fourth Street Carousel

Friday, February 10th 7:00pm will be the premier of the Fourth Street Carousel. The Fourth Street Carousel is a showcase of local talent at the Community Arts Café, hosted by WXII 12 anchor Cameron Kent.

There will be a multitude of featured artists and musical acts including:

· Tyler Nail, musical artist and multiple WS
Shuffle winner
· Walter Bartnikowski, visual artist
· Joseph Mills, poet
· The Winston-Salem Theater Alliance
· And many more!

The showcase will be held in the Community Arts Café’s Underground Theater. Tickets for the event are $10.00 and can be purchased in advance at the Community Arts Café’s lower level office. Seating for the Fourth Street Carousel will be limited.

Sidewalk Café Update Meeting

On Tuesday, January 24th from 4:00pm-5:30pm there will be a public meeting regarding the proposed changes to the Sidewalk Café Ordinance. The meeting will be held at the Public Meeting Room on the 5th Floor of the Stuart Municipal Building. During the meeting, City of Winston-Salem staff will present changes in the ordinance’s language. The changes are based upon feedback collected from public meetings held in August and November of last year. This meeting is open to all businesses, organizations, and individuals interested in the ordinance and its impact upon downtown.

This event will serve as the kick off icebreaker for the 2012 American Culinary Federation (ACF) Southeast Regional Conference hosted by the ACF Triad Chapter. This Conference will be held at the Twin City Quarter Hotels and Conference Center from Feb 19-22 and the Wing Ding Rib Thing will be on February 19 at the Millennium Center, 101 West Fourth St Winston Salem NC 27101.

The ACF Southeast Regional Conference draws hundreds of chef and student attendees from all over the Southeastern USA. The following is just a sampling of what these chefs experience while at the conference:

• Celebrity Chef Demos
• Regional Competitions for Chef of the Year, Pastry Chef of the Year, Student of the Year, Student Team Championship, Educator of the Year and more
• Industry leading culinary educational segments
• Networking
• Product showcases
• Spellbinding Food and Wine
• Chapter support

THE WING DING AND RIB THING
will be one of the premier events of the conference; welcoming attendees to Winston Salem and setting the tone for the entire conference. Additionally this will serve as our regional community outreach event, incorporating a food drive and raising funds to support the ACF Chef and Child Foundation and the Childhood Hunger Programs of the Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC.

The proceedings will begin pre event as Chef Don McMillan coordinates the formation of our Future Chefs brigade. At need children will be teamed with ACF Chefs to prepare healthy recipes that will serve as the side dishes for the food activities. Junior size chef hats and aprons will be provided to the child participants.

The event itself will be structured as follows:
• 6 PM start time
• $10 Admission for ACF Conference Attendees. $30 Admission for public (public will receive $5 off attendance with donation of 5 non perishable food items) this price includes a raffle ticket to Benefit ACF TEAM USA for their culinary Olympics competition. We really want the public involved so there will be quite a push for community attendance.
• The cookers will be smoking as ACF Chefs present a mind blowing array of NC pork ribs and delectable chicken wings (locally raised poultry). All will be presented accompanied by the bold flavors of the full line of Texas Pete Sauces. As the food displays open there will be a brief awards ceremony as we celebrate the offerings of the Future Chefs who prepared the side dishes for the evening.
• Live music will be available from the main stage as a premier band regales us with a diverse blend of music.
• The ACF CULINARY TEAM USA signature flying-V guitar will be on display to promote the final days of its auction.
• Food and funds raised will benefit the ACF Chef and Child Foundation and the Childhood Hunger Programs of the Second Harvest Food Bank of NWNC.
• Estimated attendance is 200-400 chef attendees and 300-400 from the public.

Foothills Brewing expands with new facilities to increase production

I had the opportunity last week to visit the new Foothills Brewing facility on Kimwell Drive off of South Stratford Road and take a tour with Jamie Bartholomaus, Brewmaster and Co-Owner. If you have not heard, Foothills Brewing is expanding. See some links below.

Powerful Lessons...Producing Successful Events

You are cordially invited to attend the Arts & Events Marketing Assistance (AEMA) workshop and luncheon Thursday, February 2 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Reynolds Place at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts. The AEMA workshop provides participants an in-depth review of the funding program, outlines the application process and procedures for organizations interested in requesting funding. In addition, this year's workshop features guest speaker, Angel Postell, executive director of the BB&T Charleston Wine + Food Festival. Angel will share her top lessons and inside secrets she's learned through her journey as the executive director of the enormously successful Charleston Wine + Food Festival.

With over sixteen years of experience, Angel Passailaigue Postell has a wide array of experience and knowledge in public relations, marketing and special event planning. Her specialty is both the travel and tourism and food and beverage industries, two unique niches promoting the hospitality industry, including hotels, attractions, destinations, restaurants and more.

After a serving as the original Planning Committee Chair/Founder of the inaugural Charleston Wine + Food Festival, Postell was hired officially by the Board of Directors in April 2005 to serve as Executive Director. In this role, she oversees the management and operations of the Festival, serves as the liaison between the Board of Directors, oversees accounting and financial details, handles fundraising efforts, and assists as needed with Festival initiatives.

Next community meeting for input on a new Central Library

Meetings will be conducted by WS/FC Planning Dept.

Attendees will be shown a 7 to 10 minute video presentation to inspire their thinking of what a new Central Library could be. We will touch on how a new library can add to the growth and momentum of a community as not only a center of information, but also a cultural destination and a community gathering place as well.

Attendees will then be divided into groups to discuss identical questions. These include:

· Library location

· Library services and functions

· Library architecture

Each topic has its own subset of questions that will be explored by the groups.
Each group will include a planning staff facilitator and a library staff member who will sit in strictly as a resource to answer questions about services, etc. The planning staff facilitator will record the comments and discussion of their group.

After individual group discussion concludes a citizen from each group will give a report to the entire gathering. Comments from all groups will then be recorded, given to the building architect (when selected) and used as the planning for a new Central Library progresses.
We will also add a page to our website to post summary findings from each community meeting and provide an opportunity for those who could not attend in person to comment.
