Willow shines egg-yolk yellow

We make the Bach remedy Willow from one particular species: Salix vitellina. It has golden bark at this time of year shining brightly with vigour and strength. The Latin word vitellus means egg yolk so the title is both descriptive of the colour and the idea of new life coming in the egg: an early indication of spring. So much of the Willow remedy is about reawakening enthusiasm for life, about renewal and growth after the hardships of winter perhaps.

The sheep just happened to be there watching as I took the photographs!

Gorse in the snow

So we have had some winter here in the U.K. – nothing like that on mainland Europe. The Gorse flowers look brilliant in the snow. A reminder of how Gorse overcomes adversity. But it is strange the way that it begins to flower just when we expect things to be closing down for winter. Life is stirring even when all seems still.

Honeysuckle Flowers

Lonicera caprifolium is the Honeysuckle Dr Bach chose for those who live more with the past than the present. It breaks into leaf at this time of year, when the sun is in Capricorn – hence caprifolium. But imagine the astonishment today when I saw flowers as well. Is this July? What a strange portent for the new year. But let’s look forward to 2012. It will be remarkable year by all accounts.

Snow in winter – that’s not news

First snow this winter at Walterstone last week. It soon melted. But the days darken as we head for Solstice at midday on the 22nd. Less than a week away.

Clematis seeds survive the wind

After the winds last week almost all the leaves have now been torn from the trees. But Clematis seeds still remain attached to their stems and can be seen more clearly now in the hedges. They may stay there for some weeks yet. They are delicate and beautiful. The single seed has a tail and this curls in a spiral. It helps it to fly into the future….

Gorse flowers in winter

Just as we are approaching the darkest season in the northern hemisphere a flower begins to bloom. Golden Gorse braves the winter and sends a message of hope into the gloom.

‘December, December, low lies the sun. Deep in the earth new life has begun.’

And here, surprisingly, a yellow shaft of light from the Gorse flowers blazes out the message of a new beginning. ‘Hope springs eternal in the human breast’ according to the cynical poet Alexander Pope – but it’s true!

Larch leaves turn golden

It is always a surprise when Larch trees turn to autumn colours and then drop their leaves. Somehow we expect Larch to be evergreen – like Pine – and when the needles change colour so dramatically it almost seems like the trees are dying. Did Dr Bach have this in mind when he selected Larch as a remedy?
