This study showed Thimerosal-induced cellular damage in human neuronal and fetal-cell model systems in a concentration- and time-dependent fashion using Thimerosal at low nanomolar (parts-per-billion) concentrations. These concentrations are comparable to those found in fetal and early infant exposure to mercury from Thimerosal-containing biologics and vaccines in the 1990s and, in some instances, today. These levels induced significant cellular toxicity in the human neuronal and fetal cells studied. The Thimerosal-induced cellular damage was consistent with that found in pathophysiological studies of patients diagnosed with an ASD. In both instances, the studies found significant mitochondrial dysfunction, reduced cellular oxidative-reduction activity, cell degeneration, and cell death.

The present study also revealed that Thimerosal is significantly more toxic than the other metal compounds studied (e.g., aluminum sulfate, methylmercury hydroxide, lead acetate, and mercuric chloride). The explanation for Thimerosal’s greater toxicity than even methylmercury hydroxide (MeHgOH) appears to be the fact that Thimerosal was chemically engineered in the 1920s to be a more highly toxic alkylmercury compound, whose biological transport and intracellular delivery properties were enhanced. Compared to MeHgOH, Thimerosal has: 1) higher aqueous solubility (i.e. ability to dissolve in water and water-based systems); 2) higher solubility in cell membranes (i.e. ability to dissolve in cell membranes); and 3) higher intracellular toxicity (i.e. ability to inactivate essential cell processes) and mercury retention.

Estimate based on mathematical formula; only 28,000 confirmed in U.S.

ATLANTA - As many as 1 million Americans now have swine flu, U.S. health officials said Thursday, adding that 6 percent or more of some urban areas are infected. The estimate voiced by a government flu scientist Thursday was no surprise to the experts who have been closely watching the virus.

“We knew diagnosed cases were just the tip of the iceberg,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University infectious diseases expert who was in Atlanta for the meeting of a vaccine advisory panel.

Lyn Finelli, a flu surveillance official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, made the 1 million estimate in a presentation to the vaccine panel. The number is from mathematical modeling, based on surveys by health officials.

Regular seasonal flu sickens anywhere from 15 million to 60 million Americans each year.

The United States has roughly half the world’s swine flu cases, with nearly 28,000 reported to the CDC so far. The U.S. count includes 3,065 hospitalizations and 127 deaths.

The percentage of cases hospitalized has been growing, but that may be due to closer scrutiny of very sick patients. It takes about three days from the time symptoms appear to hospitalization, Finelli said, and the average hospital stay has been three days.

Other health problems have been a factor in most cases: About one in three of the hospitalized cases had asthma, 16 percent diabetes, 12 percent have immune system problems and 11 percent chronic heart disease.
The numbers again highlight how the young seem to be particularly at risk of catching the new virus. But data also show that the flu has been more dangerous to adults who catch it.

The average age of swine flu patients is 12, the average age for hospitalized patients is 20, and for people who died, it was 37. It seems to be deadliest to people 65 and older, with deaths in more than 2 percent of elderly people infected, Finelli said.

Also at the meeting, CDC officials made projections about flu vaccines expected to be available to protect against both seasonal and swine flu this fall.

Roughly 10 million doses of seasonal flu vaccine should be available by early September, and production for the whole flu season should be around the 143 million doses produced for the 2008-09 season, said Dr. Anthony Fiore, a CDC flu specialist.

For the swine flu vaccine, health officials outlined possibilities for a campaign urging people to get the shot. The vaccinations might be given as two shots, spaced 21 days apart, but the vaccine has to be tested and licensed before it’s made available to the public.

Memorial for the New Year
By Cynthia A. Janak
On December 31st of every year we all make resolutions with the hope of improving ourselves one resolution at a time. Usually we make resolutions that we know in our heart we will not be able to adhere to. This year I am making a resolution to remember certain individuals that have touched my heart. These individuals are no longer with us on this earth but are now angels watching over us. I am going to keep each and every one of them in my heart so that their memory remains alive.
Here are thirty-eight reports of death. You will notice that some say undetermined or unknown in the report and others will say natural causes. This bothers me because if you read every single report completely you will notice that the majority of these girls and young women were healthy initially.
Brooke Petkevicius – Aged 19
The first is Brooke Petkevicius who was 19. While at the University of California, Berkeley, she studied social work and was involved in many extracurricular activities, including co-ed volleyball and ballroom dancing. She played on an intramural volleyball team, went to kickboxing classes. She also was a social welfare major.
She died 14 days after her first dose of Gardasil from a pulmonary embolism or blood clot. There is no family history of this.

http://www.naturalnews.com/026496_NaturalNews_vaccination_the_WHO.html

Vaccine against the “swine flu” will be ready in July. It has been developed in half the time it used to take to develop flu vaccines due to Baxter International’ s patented te chnology. This means about 13 weeks from drawing board to injection instead of the usual 26. Never mind time for testing to see if it is safe. You remember Baxter, don’t you? It is the company that in February delivered seasonal flu vaccine to 18 countries that was laced with live “bird flu” virus.

With the declaration earlier this month by the World Health Organization (WHO) that the “swine flu” has reached pandemic Level 6 (they had to change the definition of level 6 to make this determination work), a whole series of bureaucratic prerogatives have been triggered, and local, state, national, and international agencies have been further empowered. In the U.S., all laws and conditions are now in place to see to it that you are forced to be injected with the new “swine flu” vaccine, whether you want to be or not. In the U.S., the government is now able to mandate universal mass vaccinations at gunpoint.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there will be no exemptions. “A certain amount of human wastage” is expected.

The new vaccine is made with squalene oil as an adjuvant. According to Dr. Viera Scheibner, micropaleontologist and world renowned researcher in the field of vaccine effectiveness and danger, squalene “contributed to the cascade reactions known as Gulf War Syndrome. GIs =2 0 developed arthritis, fibromyalgia, lymphadenopathy, photosensitive rashes, malar rashes, chronic fatigue, chronic headaches,=2 0abnormal body hair loss, non-healing skin lesions, aphthous ulcers, dizziness, weakness, memory loss, seizures, mood changes, neuropsychiatric problems, anti-thyroid effects, anemia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, systemic lupus arythmatosus, multiple sclerosis, deadly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Raynaud’s Syndrome with paroxysms of lack of blood in fingers and toes, Sjogren’s Syndrome with blurred vision, chronic diarrhea, night sweats, and low grade fever .”

In 2002, a U.S. federal judge ruled that there was good cause to believe squalene to be harmful. He ordered the Pentagon to stop endorsing its use.

In 1976, during another flu scare and government insistence on flu shots, only one person died from the actual flu, while hundreds of Americans died for the vaccine, according to information chronicled by Paul Mickle of the Trentonian.

So far, the deaths of 87 people in the U.S. have been attributed to “swine flu”. However, most or all of these deaths are likely the result of pre-existing =2 0 conditions or compromised immune systems, according to journalist Jane Burgermeister in her charges against the WHO, United Nations, and Baxter International. Yet in the face of this almost non-existent risk, the WHO has just declared the first full fledged flu pandemic of the century, urging countries to shore up defenses against the virus they characterize as “not stoppable”. Each year, the usual seasonal flu kills up to 500,000 people and infects up to five million people worldwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Is all this hype for the purpose of making Baxter shareholders rich by turning the population of the U.S. into lab rats? Or is it something more sinister? Could the vaccine mandated for the U.S. population also contain live flu virus? Whatever the answer to these questions is, there is a way to avoid being herded into nearby schools that are standing by to be turned into shot clinics.

Friday, March 27, 2009

Drinking hot tea may cause throat cancer, Iranian researchers said Friday, suggesting people should let steaming drinks cool before consuming them.

Previous studies have linked tobacco and alcohol with cancer of the esophagus, and the research published in the British Medical Journal suggests that scalding beverages may also somehow pave the way for such tumors.

Drinking very hot tea at a temperature of greater than 158 degrees was associated with an eight-fold increased risk of throat cancer compared to sipping warm or lukewarm tea at less than 149 degrees, the researchers said.

Reza Malekzadeh of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and colleagues studied the tea-drinking habits of 300 people with esophageal cancer and another 571 healthy men and women from the same area in Golestan Province in northern Iran.

That region has one of the highest rates of throat cancer in the world but smoking rates and alcohol consumption are low, the researchers said. Nearly all the volunteers drank black tea regularly, consuming on average more than a liter each day.

People who regularly drank tea less than two minutes after pouring were five times more likely to develop the cancer compared to those who waited four or more minutes, the researchers said.

British studies have reported people prefer their tea at an average temperature of 56 degrees to 60 degrees, they noted.

It is not clear how hot tea might cause cancer but one idea is that repeated thermal injury to the lining of the throat somehow initiates it, researchers said.

Cancers of the esophagus kill more than 500,000 people worldwide each year, with the bulk of the disease occurring in discrete populations in Asia, Africa, and South America. The tumors are especially deadly, with five-year survival rates of 12 to 31 percent.

Earlier this week, U.S. and Japanese researchers reported that about a third of East Asians - Chinese, Japanese and Koreans - have an enzyme deficiency that puts them at higher risk of developing esophageal cancer when they drink alcohol.

Research suggests people who drink more than seven cups of instant coffee a day have an increased tendency to hallucinate.

High caffeine users may even think they sense non-existent people, according to researchers from the University of Durham.

They studied 200 students who were asked about their typical intake of caffeine products.

Those who had a high caffeine intake were three times more likely to have the heard voice of someone non-existent than “low” users who consumed less than one cup of instant coffee or its equivalent.

Seeing things that were not there, hearing voices and sensing the presence of dead people were among the experiences reported. Researchers also found that people drinking as few as three cups of brewed coffee each day may experience mild hallucinations, such as hearing voices that aren’t there.

Researchers believe the hallucinations stem from the caffeine, rather than the coffee. Besides coffee, caffeine can be obtained from sources such as tea, chocolate, “pep” pills and energy drinks.

Dr. Charles Fernyhough, the co-author of the study, pointed out that the research only showed an association between caffeine intake and hallucination proneness, not a causal link.

Talk, Medicine, Activities Help Keep Spirits Up
Darlene Dunn, Staff writerUPDATED: 12:34 pm EDT October 1, 2008
Sometimes Susan King has a difficult time getting her day started.

“I’ll just want to stay home and be a slob — not talk to people and not leave the house,” said King, 62.

King suffers from depression. She is part of a growing population that uses measures other than medication to combat the disease.

King, of Willard, Mo., said that her job as an Avon representative has been wonderful in helping her better manage her depression.

“It may take until noon to shower, dress and do my hair so that I can look like an Avon lady,” King said, adding that she gets to talk and meet people in that role.

King, who admits to having a lot of anger and just generally being unhappy, said she was diagnosed with depression when she was in her 30s. She said she had a mental breakdown.

Relationships Trigger Depression

King, who has been married for 42 years, said problems in her marriage and the pressures of being a stay-at-home mother were really difficult for her to manage.

“I don’t know how women do it with a full-time job,” she said. “That was my full-time job, and it was difficult for me to take care of my family.”

After being diagnosed, she tried medication that she says did not agree with her. She says she found the most help from her psychologist with talk therapy.

When her husband, Gary, retired, financial constraints caused her to stop her visits to psychologists, so she took up blogging, which she says is “very helpful.”

Because of those outlets, she says, she is better aware of what triggers her depression. Some of the triggers include not seeing her eldest son, who works in Iraq and Afghanistan, the death of her parents and when each of her four children left home.

Boomer Depression

Dr. Dorree Lynn, a psychologist and life coach, said other common triggers include illnesses, hormonal changes, diminished energy level and financial difficulties.

Lynn is also the founder of FiftyAndFurthermore.com, which deals with a variety of topics for people embarking on the second half of their lives.

Some of the signs for depression in older people include losing interest in activity, staying in bed and becoming isolated.

“It is more easily obvious in older people because they don’t tend to be binge drinkers or have the tools and energy to mask the depression,” she said.

To deal with depression in boomers and senior citizens, she says, communication and physical touch are crucial.

“If you see someone you love and you think they are depressed, become a part of their life,” she said. “If they are not mobile, teach them how to use a computer. They need to know that they are wanted, needed and useful.”

Loved ones can also encourage volunteering or becoming a mentor.

“The single worst thing to do is to be left alone and isolated,” Lynn said.

Lynn also points out that as people age they often deal with things differently “because they have been there and done that” or may be quieter than they used to be. This often appears to younger people as being withdrawn and in turn often leads to a misdiagnosis of depression.

Moodiness And Depression

Douglas Cootey, 41, of Midvale, Utah, suffers from depression and attention deficit disorder. He says he was diagnosed with depression after seeking help for ADD. A magnetic resonance image was taken of his brain, and the doctor said, “Hey, did you know you were depressed?”

“I was miserable, angry and hating life,” he says, adding that he had suicidal thoughts.

Cootey, like King, tried antidepressants. He says the drugs ruined his life because now he has chronic motor tic disorder that causes quick uncontrollable movements or vocal outbursts.

He says that while on the medication, he was still miserable and emotionless. In fact, he says that he was curled under a desk in the dark while on the medication.

In 1995, he went off the medication. He also started to approach his depression differently. The stay-at-home father of four says he uses “forced optimism.”

“Changing the way you think will change the way you live,” he said.

With self-analysis, he says he recognizes when he is depressed and works to combat it. He does this by indulging in fun activities, praying, walking, going for a ride, exercising and blogging.

Additionally, he says his wife, Robyn, has played a tremendous role in helping him cope with his condition.

“My wife gives me wonderful back rubs,” he said. “She lets me talk … she’ll listen to me.”

High-normal levels are often overlooked, but can harm your healthupdated 8:21 a.m. ET, Tues., April 7, 2009
The average American consumes more than a pound of refined sugar a week. It sounds unbelievable until you realize that sugar goes by more than 50 names and is an ingredient in virtually all processed foods, from your morning doughnut to the ketchup on your burger.

Eat it (along with excess fat and calories), sit around, and you’ll gain weight.

It’s the average American way of life, and it deserves a new warning label: Practicing this lifestyle could send another sugar - your blood sugar - into the danger zone.
Your body’s primary source of fuel, blood sugar plays a vital role in physical and mental well-being. But when it rises even slightly above normal - thanks to excess body fat, lack of exercise, and/or genetics - your health, your energy levels, and your weight-loss efforts are jeopardized.

Overlooked by doctors
High-normal blood sugar is anything but normal. Too high to be healthy yet too low to be called diabetes, high-normal blood sugar has long been overlooked by doctors and their patients alike. Yet an estimated 16 million Americans have it - including tens of thousands of children and teens.

The rise of the high-normal blood sugar epidemic is the direct result of the rise in overweight and obesity in the United States. Our lifestyles have changed; our bodies haven’t caught up.

“Our bodies are essentially the same as they were 40,000 years ago, but our eating and exercise habits have changed tremendously,” says Bryant Stamford, Ph.D., director of the Health Promotion and Wellness Center at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

“The same number of calories it might have taken our prehistoric ancestors an entire day to hunt and gather, we can now have brought to our door with a phone call. We simply eat too much and exercise too little,” says Stamford.

The result: high blood sugar. The danger: More and more research links even “slightly” high blood sugar to food cravings, mood swings, and overweight, as well as pregnancy and fertility problems, heart attacks, stroke, full-blown type 2 diabetes, and even, early evidence suggests, some forms of cancer.
It’s serious. That’s why it’s recommended that you get a blood sugar test and take steps to keep your sugar levels within a healthy range.

The high cost of high-normal blood sugar
Normal blood sugar ranges from 60 to 90 milligrams of glucose per 100 milliliters of blood (mg/dl) before a meal.
High-normal blood sugar is defined as 100 to 125 mg/dl (full-blown type 2 diabetes is diagnosed at 126 mg/dl and above).

Without a blood sugar test, it’s impossible to know whether your blood sugar falls within a normal range. And because elevated blood sugar typically does its damage silently, it’s easy to brush off what few symptoms there are, like fatigue and mood swings.

When doctors didn’t give a Washington state high school student the answers she wanted, she took matters into her own hands.

From mermaids to flying pigs check out these pictures of off-beat, interesting happenings from around the world.

Eighteen-year-old Jessica Terry, brought slides of her own intestinal tissue into her AP science class and correctly diagnosed herself with Crohn’s disease.

“It’s weird I had to solve my own medical problem,” Terry told CNN affiliate KOMO. “There were just no answers anywhere … I was always sick.”

For years she went from doctor to doctor complaining of vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and stomach pains. They said she had irritable bowel syndrome. They said she had colitis. They said the slides of her intestinal tissue were fine, but she knew that wasn’t right.

“Not knowing much about a disease you’re growing up with is not only nerve-wracking, but it’s confusing,” Terry told the Sammamish Reporter.

So when local pathologists stopped in to teach students in her Biomedical Problems class how to analyze slides, the high school senior decided to give her own intestines a look.

What she found? A large dark area showing inflammation, otherwise known as a granuloma–a sure sign of the intestinal disease.

To confirm her suspicion, she checked in with her teacher.

“‘Ms. Welch! Ms. Welch! Come over here. I think I’ve got something!” she shouted.

Mary Margaret Welch, who has spent 17 years teaching science at Eastside Catholic School, had a feeling Terry was on to something.

“I snapped a picture of it on the microscope and e-mailed it to the pathologist,” Welch said. “Within 24 hours, he sent back an e-mail saying yes, this is a granuloma.”

The finding impressed doctors.

“Granulomas are oftentimes very hard to find and not always even present at all,” said Dr. Corey Siegel, a bowel disease specialist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. “I commend Jessica for her meticulous work.”

While Terry’s glad to finally have answers, she now knows she’ll have a tough road ahead.

Crohn’s disease is an incurable, though treatable condition caused by inflammation in the intestines. It can cause malnutrition, ulcers, pain and discomfort.
