Our family’s journey with Dr. Carine began six years ago. I say “our family” because the changes in our children have positively impacted our entire family dynamic. At the time, my oldest daughter was 17 and was experience extreme fatigue, cyclical depression, and constant digestive issues. She had a life history of negative allergy tests, prescriptions for allergies, ear/sinus infections. She did her own research and came to me believing she had celiac disease. At the same time, having been a former teacher, I was convinced something had not been quite right with my 5 year old for several years. I was grasping at possible ODD, OCD, social anxiety. And my 3 year old had chronic skin issues from birth and literally had not slept for more than two hours at a time, including through the night. She was a miserable baby, crying for hours at a time from birth and often inconsolable. In talking with a friend, I shared my frustration that our doctor could not find anything wrong with my oldest as blood work for celiac came back negative, suggested a psychological evaluation and anti-anxiety meds for my 5 year old and, and yet another book to read about how to get my child to sleep. My friend recommended a visit to Dr. Carine. My teenager and I visited Dr. Carine with a list of her symptoms, a list of my younger children’s symptoms/issues, and a detailed family history from both parents. Dr. Carine immediately recommended the blood work I was begging for from our previous doctor and confirmed that the younger children’s issues were not due to my parenting. We immediately followed her dietary recommendations, went for blood work, and added in supplementation based on those results. A conservative diagnosis for each, recommendations for therapies along with supplementation and diet and we were on our way! My 3 year old slept through the night for the first time — ever! We saw positive changes in everyone! I was thankful, relieved, and hopeful. More than diagnosing and treating my children, Dr. Carine had empowered my now adult daughter to take responsibility for her health, and empowered me to take responsibility for the health of myself and my family. There is so much to know and to learn, much more than she can teach us at our office visits, but she has proven to be an invaluable resource. I have never felt judged as a parent, as Dr. Carine makes it clear we are on the same team. An office visit for OMT is an opportunity to chat with a friend. I enjoy my children’s appointments because it is an opportunity to talk with Dr. Carine about anything from the state of education, to serious healthcare issues, books and movies, and where to shop for good buys. I am grateful my friend led our family to Dr. Carine and I can without hesitation recommend her to family, friends, and casual acquaintances alike. I am so very grateful for Dr. Carine — her experience, her knowledge, and her genuine interest in what is best for the growth of the children and families she treats.

In 2006, my husband and I were new to Columbus and I was pregnant. When we received a referral for a pediatrician that accepted our insurance and was taking new patients, were thought ourselves lucky. What we would learn later was just how lucky. Our idea of a pediatrician’s role was tracking growth, vaccinations and managing the occasional illness. Our actual experience was an attentive pediatrician who is also a mother and committed wellness advocate. Lucky for us because our baby wasn’t well the first few years of her life and at age four triggered into a condition called PANDAS. We would learn later that Dr. Carine is one of very few doctors in the state who successfully treats PANDAS. PANDAS inflames the brain and can cause very distinct changes in a child’s behavior, which is often treated as a mental illness, which it is not. Because our daughter was already under Dr. Carine’s care of a healthy diet, lifestyle, regular sleep schedule, etc., we seamlessly added a few new health protocols to manage her new condition and she is now a thriving 2nd grader. Now, when I attend PANDAS support meetings, I regularly meet parents who found Dr. Carine after years of struggling with their children. Parents who were told that nothing else could be done for their child and yet, their instinct told them differently. Thank goodness they trusted their instincts and found a pediatrician who could and would help their children heal. We did not know our child would need Dr. Carine’s unique and specific expertise when we met her. We are the lucky ones.

A few years ago my oldest son was losing weight and complaining of stomach aches. His pediatrician examined him and advised us to seek out counseling suggesting that he was anxious. According to him 90% of stomach aches were caused by anxiety. It was not the first time we had heard that from a pediatrician…our previous doctor told us the same thing when our young daughter complained of stomach aches as soon as she could talk. But something in my gut told me that was the wrong diagnosis. Several years earlier our younger son was having recurring ear infections and as a result of overuse of antibiotics was hospitalized for 8 days. Now with our oldest son still not feeling well we had lost faith in pediatricians.

But at the request of a friend decided to give Dr Carine a try. My friend told me that she was “different” from other doctors. I conceded and made an appointment. The first thing she did was reassure me that his stomach pain was not in his head and she would get to the bottom of it. I felt so relieved to hear a doctor say that! After some bloodwork the results were not what we thought we would hear…..he had a rare form of leukemia.

It has been over 4 years since I first met Dr Carine and I can’t imagine ever having another pediatrician. We have learned so much from her! She uncovered the stomach aches that our daughter was having, the nasal congestion our other son was having, genetic mutations in our children that may very well have contributed to our son’s leukemia, and so much more. And finally a pediatrician who offers an alternative track for immunizations (and what a relief that I am not having to figure that out on my own)! And don’t think that we have a “sick” family. From the outside we are all very healthy, but Dr Carine helped us discover that if we addressed the food sensitivities that she uncovered and strengthened our gut health our kids would very seldom be sick. Last school year our 5 children missed a combined 3 days of school for illness!

I also appreciate her having been a strong advocate for our son and family as we worked through a 40 month chemotherapy and radiation treatment plan. The OMT she provided and help choosing proper supplementation helped keep his body strong through all the chemo. She went above and beyond to support our family and we are extremely grateful not just to her, but to the entire staff.

Our son Ben was terribly sick, misdiagnosed for months by more “traditional” pediatricians and specialists. Eventually he was put on a cocktail of some very powerful and scary drugs. I guess you could say the drugs improved some of the very worst symptoms, but he still was far from well. A friend recommended that we visit Dr. Carine for another opinion. Dr. Carine looked at Ben’s overall health and well-being, and diagnosed him with PANDAS and a severe gluten intolerance. She took him off of all drugs, and instead prescribed a round of simple antibiotics and a gluten free, anti-inflammatory diet. I am not exaggerating when I say Dr. Carine saved our son and gave us our family back. Ben still has to maintain a good diet, and we have to manage his PANDAS, but he is happy, healthy, and thriving. Dr. Carine has been an amazing health care provider for our other two sons as well, but their stories are (thankfully!) not as dramatic.
