Lady Antebellum - A Merry Little Christmas, a review by Matt Bjorke, Roughstock.com

Earlier this year, after the massive success of “Need You Now,” Lady Antebellum was asked by the folks at Target if they’d provide the major shopping brand an exclusive Holiday music collection. Lady Antebellum thought about it and decided it would be a fun thing to do and delivered A Merry Little Christmas to fans through Target about a month ago. With sales already over 100,000 copies, the album is already a success and proves the trio’s cross-genre appeal with four classic songs being mixed in with one original and a cover of the 1990’s Mariah Carey neo-classic “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

The ‘title track’ to A Merry Little Christmas, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” kicks off the EP and while it’s served up pretty much the way it has always been presented, the orchestra is accented by fiddler Jonathan Yukdin’s solo and I have to say that Charles Kelley’s musky tenor is a great fit for this song and when harmonizing with Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood, it sound quite exquisite. Hillary does a fine job singing the Mariah Carey tune while their version of “Blue Christmas” isn’t as good as the iconic Elvis version, it does show off some of the blusier tones of Charles Kelley’s vocals.

The lone new tune on the album is the band’s co-write with Tom Douglas, “On This Winter’s Night.” It feels like a song that could end up being a ‘classic’ in the years to come with a fantastic story about a Christmas with a young family and, specifically how the mother and father handle the situation. The W.O. Smith School’s children’s choir joins in on the song and while this could derail quite a few holiday albums, their performance is tastefully added into the song as a response to Charles and Hillary’s lyrical call. “Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let It Snow” is a song that’s hard to ‘ruin’ and their take on “Silver Bells” is modern yet reverential to the classic.

The whole A Merry Little Christmas EP is tastefully made although I do have to wonder why previously released “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” wasn’t included on the disc. Perhaps the trio and their label partner Capitol Nashville figured their fans already owned that song. That aside, the album is a nice addition to any holiday music fan’s collection.

Track List:

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

All I Want For Christmas Is You

Blue Christmas

On This Winter's Night

Johnny Mathis - Merry Christmas (1958) a review by Dennis MacDonald, Allmusic.com

Of the several Christmas LPs Johnny Mathis has recorded, this one gets the nod. With empathetic arrangements by Percy Faith, it's impossible to say how many babies were born the following September after parents heard Johnny Mathis crooning "The Christmas Song." Smo-o-o-oth!

Track List:

Winter Wonderland

The Christmas Song

Sleigh Ride

Blue Christmas

I'll Be Home for Christmas

White Christmas

The Polar Express (Original Movie Soundtrack), A Review
by James Christopher Monger, Allmusic.com

The soundtrack to Robert Zemeckis' groundbreaking film adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg's popular children's book The Polar Express celebrates the season with both classic and contemporary holiday flair. Composers Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri provide the latter, relying on swelling choral arrangements, tender ballads, and polarizing yuletide offerings from Stephen Tyler and Josh Groban.

Tyler struts his stuff on the amiable but derivative "Rockin' on Top of the World," a three-chord rave-up that finds the Aerosmith mouthpiece channeling a pack of howler monkeys, but it's Groban's syrupy, future American Idol favorite "Believe" that serves as the soundtrack's commercial centerpiece. Tom Hanks does his best Gene Wilder on the whimsical and strangely unnerving title track, a wonderfully unhinged performance that will have Willy Wonka fans clamoring for more, and the winsome vocals of preteens Matthew Hall and Meagan Moore give the ballad "When Christmas Comes to Town" a real sense of wonder. Silvestri's orchestral pieces are effective in tone, yet ape Danny Elfman's Edward Scissorhands theme so shamelessly that lawyers on both sides must have had words early on in the production.

The Polar Express is ambitious for sure, but the fact that its most sincere pieces are the six classics that make up its caboose is telling.

Liner Notes
(no author mention)

With the arrival of the Christmas holiday season there comes a bevy of all sweet things to brighten the thoughts of children and grown-ups alike: sweet sights, sweet tastes, sweet dreams and the sweetest sounds. Here on this album we have a sampling of some of the finest carols, hymns and songs from some of the many lands where Christmas is celebrated.

Just as the sweet sounds of Christmas differ greatly from country to country, so do the festive customs. And each nation has its own traditional taste treats associated with the season. As we listen to the sweet sounds of Christmas from points around the globe, it's fun to think about the sweets and "goodies" that the people in the various lands are enjoying as their own special customs.

Eggnog, as we know it, is probably the "American" of the holiday sweets although it bears a marked resemblance to a spiced wine and milk mixture the English call syllabub. However, our first sounds for the holiday are those of an American carol that has indeed become a classic, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear." And it is hauntingly performed by Billy Vaughn.

Next a song from the land where the traditional treat is the buche de Noel - a mouth-watering cake in the form of a yule log. The French composer Adolphe Adam's love "O Holy Night" is sung by Pat Boone.

Moving on to a lighter moment, the Anita Kerr Singers provide a "Little Drummer Boy" that's as crisp as a candy cane. Next comes one of the tenderest songs of the season's fare. In praise of the Mother of the Christ Child is "Ave Maria" interpreted most movingly by Eddie Fisher.

In Germany at Christmastime there are too many hundreds of cakes, cookies and other assorted goodies to count. Pfeffermusse, Printen and Lebkuchen are just a few of the sensational things to think about while Liberace plays "Oh, Tannenbaum." The Christmas Tree, so the story goes, resulted from an old German legend which told of people seeing a single tree in the forest in full bloom on Christmas Eve with a lovely child seated among its glowing branches.

Eddie Fisher returns with "Do You Hear What I Hear?" which is followed by the close, sweet harmonizing of the Mills Brothers singing one of the all-time favourites of the Christmas hymns, "O Little Town of Bethlehem."

England is justifiably famous for its Christmas Pudding. Or Plum Pudding or Figgy Pudding... call it what you will... there aren't as many names as there are variants in recipes over the centuries. Just look up whatever recipe you have handy because this is a steamed dessert the whole family can enjoy helping put together. You'll all soon discover why it's been a mainstay in England even longer than the "Coventry Carol," one of the earliest of the true English carols dating back to the fifteenth century and heard here in Liberace's timeless rendition.

Two more classics bring this platter of festive sweets to a close: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" with the Anita Kerr Singers and "Joy to the World" sung by Pat Boone.

If these treats set you thinking, play the album again, Get the family all together in the kitchen to whip up some of our favorite family sweets or some treats that are special favorites at your house. For isn't the family together on the sweetest of all the many real joys of Christmas?

Star Bright is the fourth studio album and first Christmas album by Vanessa Williams, released in the United States on November 5, 1996 by Mercury Records. The album achieved critical acclaim and success as one of the best-selling holiday albums of 1996 and 1997. It peaked at number thirty-six on the Billboard 200, number twenty-four on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and number five on the Top Holiday Albums.

The album went on to be nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album and was certified gold by the RIAA for sales of over 500,000 copies. Although no official singles were released from the album, "Do You Hear What I Hear/The Little Drummer Boy" became an instant holiday classic becoming the most played holiday record of 1996 and reaching number fifteen on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.

Also, again while the album released no official singles, a video was shot in 1993 for "What Child Is This?" that was originally featured on the A&M Records Christmas compilation A Very Special Christmas 2. It was re-release under the name of The Christmas Collection: The Best Of Vanessa Williams.

Review
by David Jeffries, Allmusic.com

The story that unfolds during Trans-Siberian Orchestra's third Christmas CD deals with angels visiting New York City, which gives this orchestrated rock group a chance to draw upon a wide variety of modern music.

The jaunty "Christmas Nights in Blue" sounds like it was influenced by Louis Jordan and is the coolest moment the orchestra has ever offered, while the driving "Christmas Jam" is Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" with some sleigh bells. Not that the group was ever "traditional," but the songs here sound less influenced by the old Christmas standards, and they're generally more fun and uplifting. The quiet numbers are delicate and beautiful, and there are a number of them in the album's fourth quarter.

The problem with the album is it's nearly choked with too much material, with a great number of the songs existing solely to move the story along. That's when the album gets too emotive, too forced, and too Electric Light Orchestra without Jeff Lynne.

Good new is, whittle out the dreck and you've still have plenty left to enjoy. Even though it won't win them any new fans, The Lost Christmas Eve is rumored to be an "end of the trilogy" album. If so, the trilogy ends with a big, theatrical bang, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra fans wouldn't have it any other way.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra's second album, Christmas Attic, may not be as focused or serious as Christmas Eve, but it is just as enjoyable and maybe even more consistent, thanks to Paul O'Neill's increasingly impressive compositions and an improved musicality.
Review

What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens.

Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want to arrange it/This world you can change it/If we could somehow make this/Christmas thing last/By helping a neighbor/Or even a stranger." Musically, the band has taken some traditional Christmas songs ("O Come All Ye Faithful," "O Holy Night," "The First Noel") and mixed in some modern rock music.

The result is stunning and very impressive. It is filled with energy that simply blows you away. The already classic "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" is a gripping instrumental based on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (although you might have to listen carefully to hear it). Fans of progressive music should like this one. And if you're into the more recent works of Savatage (like Handful of Rain or Dead Winter Dead) you'll really love this.
The obligatory Stevie Wonder Christmas album is par for the course, with standards like "The Little Drummer Boy" coming off better than the new songs written for the project.
A holiday album in the classic Perry Como mold, Season's Greetings is warm and relaxed, with lush renditions of "Winter Wonderland," "The Christmas Song," "O Holy Night" and seven other Christmas favorites.
Review
by David Sprague, Amazon.com

Countless singers have recorded the now-famous title track to this 14-song collection, but none have explored its evocative nuances as fully as the man who first brought it into our living rooms--Nat King Cole. Then again, his honeyed throat and refined delivery allowed him to make just about any song his own--even ubiquitous carols such as "O Holy Night" and "Adeste Fideles." Cole's gift--the thing that made him beloved by grandmas and jazzbos alike--was his ability to conjure images so vivid, you need only close your eyes in order to see, say, a snow-swept town square ("Caroling, Caroling") or that holy scene from 2,000 years ago ("Away in a Manger").
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic.com

Left without a major-label contract after her country makeover didn’t stick, there was one clear option for Jessica Simpson: sign with Ellen DeGeneres’ fledgling Eleven Eleven label to cut her second Christmas album.

Compared to 2004’s brassy Rejoyce: The Christmas Album, Happy Christmas exists on a small stage: Simpson doesn’t belt songs out, doesn’t seem intent on wowing an audience with her pizzazz. Instead, she slips into whatever old-fashioned mode works for the song at hand, kicking off proceedings with the Phil Spector-styled “My Only Wish,” jauntily navigating a medley of “Here Comes Santa Claus/Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” putting on her serious face for “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” adopting her inner choir nerd for “Carol of the Bells,” singing amiably with John Britt on “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and with Willie Nelson on “Merry Christmas Baby.”

She may be intent on being all things to all people, but her eagerness to please suits the season and helps make Happy Christmas a better holiday soundtrack than Rejoyce.

For his second seasonal collection, recorded in 1969 (following 1964's The Jack Jones Christmas Album), Jack Jones took a more eclectic, contemporary approach, including spiritual (if not specifically holiday) songs like the socially conscious "Some Children See Him" (which posited a multi-racial Christ child) and the recent Edwin Hawkins Singers hit "Oh Happy Day." "Little Altar Boy" was also given a gospel arrangement, while "O Little Town of Bethlehem" was rendered a cappella with chorus. "Christmas Day" from the recent musical Promises, Promises may have seemed like a standard-in-the-making, though it did not become one. Still, Jones sounds more comfortable on traditional fare like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Silver Bells."

It can be argued that Sinatra never sounded fully comfortable singing Christmas carols, and this record is no exception. While his other albums of the period are bursting with dash and sensitivity, this is a distant, even slightly lackadaisical performance. It's no dud on its own, but compared to the classic Christmas records of other artists, and especially to Sinatra's best work, it is unusually somber. Gordon Jenkins' adventurous arrangements are occasionally intrusive, but the album has touches of magic during "The Christmas Waltz" and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."
