They set out to see what effect obesity had on survival after surgery, but instead found that the thinner a patient was, the greater the risk of death. The measurement the investigators used was body mass index (BMI), which takes into account both height and weight.

"Patients with low body mass index are at significantly higher risk of 30-day mortality following general and vascular surgical procedures," said lead researcher George Stukenborg, an associate professor in the department of public health sciences at the University of Virginia. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

The UK's Daily Mail reports that the Russian research vessel Academician Lavrentiev has identified at least 100 large methane plumes in the East Siberian Arctic Shelf that are releasing high amounts of the methane gas into the environment.

"We found more than 100 fountains, some more than a kilometer (just over three-fifths of a mile) across," said Dr. Igor Semiletov, who was involved in the discovery. "These are methane fields on a scale not seen before. The emissions went directly into the atmosphere."

Under normal circumstances, methane leaks deep in the ocean oxidize long before they reach the surface. Microbes in both marine and freshwater sediments convert methane into carbon dioxide on its way up to the ocean surface. But since the area where the methane fountains have been discovered is in relatively shallow water, there is not enough time for this conversion to take place. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

I find that the topical form of testosterone is generally adequate. I also use broader general hormone support whenever indicated. Therefore, I take Melatonin 3 mg at HS and I also generally recommend DHEA at levels of 10-25 mg for many of my patients, the lower dose for women. In the same topical formula many of my men patients also receive Progesterone and Chysin.
This research paper is one of only two that provides a decent rational to support my belief about the general benefits exceeding risks with testosterone supplementation.

Garry F. Updates are added as important new information is published. The literature review for version 15.1 is current through December 2006; this topic was last changed on December 28, 2006. The next version of UpToDate (15.2) will be released in June 2007.

INTRODUCTION The pericardium may be involved in a large number of systemic disorders or may be diseased as an isolated process. The principal manifestations of pericardial disease are pericarditis and pericardial effusion. While these are distinct phenomena, most patients with pericardial disease present with both manifestations to a greater or lesser degree. In some cases, the clinical presentation of acute pericardial inflammation predominates, and the presence of excess pericardial fluid is clinically unimportant. In other cases, the effusion and its clinical consequences are of primary importance. Masters and Myron Coplan

I. The Problem

During the last two decades, evidence has accumulated that the interaction of environmental pollution, poor diet, and lifestyle contributes to the exceptionally high rates of violent crime in many American cities.

Lead intoxication, even at low levels, correlates with aggressive behavior as well as learning disabilities. Manganese, a toxin that at high levels of exposure contributes to Parkinsonism, has also been linked to violent behavior (especially thanks to research by the Violence Research Foundation).

Effects of lead and manganese interact, moreover, so that individuals exposed to both show stronger effects than those exposed to either one alone. Alcohol and drug use, often associated with violent crime, increase the deleterious effects of toxic metals through complex biochemical interactions at the cellular level.

These chemicals compromise the serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitter systems that are integral to self-control due to their effects in lowering thresholds for violent behavior. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Updates are added as important new information is published. The literature review for version 15.1 is current through December 2006; this topic was last changed on January 10, 2007. The next version of UpToDate (15.2) will be released in June 2007.

INTRODUCTION โ€” Pericardial effusion can develop in patients with acute pericarditis or may be seen as an incidental and silent finding in a variety of systemic disorders. It may have important implications for prognosis (as in patients with intrathoracic neoplasm), for diagnosis (as in myopericarditis or acute pericarditis), or for both (as in dissection of the ascending aorta).

A general overview of the diagnosis and treatment of pericardial effusion will be presented here. Issues related to specific causes of pericardial effusion (eg, neoplasm, bacterial infection, tuberculosis, postmyocardial infarction) are discussed separately in the appropriate topic reviews. The evaluation and management of acute pericarditis is also discussed separately. Free radicals are believed to play a role in heart disease, cancer and other disorders. So it makes sense that antioxidants could help protect or even treat many health problems.

However, some poorly designed studies have given antioxidants mixed results (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3214&p=3892&sid=258fe62f53a591185a259925b7c55ca3&sid=7e828fa71f84a9557d08255f34ff89c9#p3892) and resulted in the mainstream media reporting that antioxidants are virtually worthless. But new research provides hard evidence that taking antioxidant supplements long-term produces dramatic benefits in people with multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

That's the conclusion of a randomized, controlled trial of vitamin C, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and selenium capsules. The research results, just reported in BioMed Central's journal Nutrition and Metabolism, show these dietary antioxidants produce multiple positive effects on sugar and fat metabolism, blood pressure and arterial flexibility (which allows blood to move freely through the body). Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Suffering from an unspecified "serious long condition", doctors told him he would be dead in two years unless he underwent a lung transplant. With tens of thousands of people world-wide awaiting organ transplants, the young man was one of the "lucky" patients who soon received his lungs from a donor. The problem was he was given lungs riddled with a fast growing cancer -- and Millington died less than 10 months after his operation.

This is just a horrible, rare, mistake right? Not necessarily, according to a warning just issued by the UK health service. It specifically lists other examples of diseased and damaged organs being inappropriatedly donated for transplantion -- in addition to cancer, these include "fatty" organs, which can be caused by a donor's obesity or alcoholism and result in cirrhosis in a transplant patient, and organs containing cuts and other damage resulting from the organ retrieval process. Most horrific was a report of a donor patient found to be infected with vCJD, the human form of mad cow disease, as well as hepatitis B. In addition, the report notes problems with patient identification errors and incorrectly matched tissue types. Read more...

Immunice for Immune Support

Both groups also recommended screening less frequently.

Add to that the long-simmering debate on the value of PSA testing for prostate cancer and the fact that both the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the American College of Radiology have condemned the new USPSTF recommendations, it's no wonder patients and even experts feel like they are suffering from a bad case of medical whiplash.

Was the timing of the announcements anything more than coincidence? Here is another study showing an 88% reduction in heart attack rates!!

THIS IS WHY Beyond Chelation Improved is LIFE SAVING but for those who cannot afford the $120 a month we should certainly encourage them to start regular blood donation. It has no downside, but over time, the benefits from all the nutrients in BC-I will also keep you much sharper and younger, as you age.

But at least everyone will one day admit that no cholesterol lowering program comes close to this 88% reduction in fatal heart attacks! So when will the world move on to BLOOD VISCOSITY, as the new frontier, and leave the nonsense of cholesterol in the trash bin called the sad story of the history of medicine and man’s greed.

Garry F. Results published in Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation the same year demonstrated that blood donation reduced systolic and diastolic blood viscosity values from their baselines by 21% and 32%, respectively. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Are commercially available combinations of supplements effective for controlling blood sugar?
A: November is American Diabetes Month so the timing of your question couldn't be better. I assume that you're referring to type-2 diabetes that mostly affects adults and is less severe than type 1 (juvenile) diabetes that must be treated with regular insulin injections. Exercise, diet and various supplements can help control type-2 diabetes and may help those with type 1 reduce their insulin requirements. Bear in mind, however, that supplements alone aren't enough: regular exercise (at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity daily) is the single most important thing you can do to control your disease. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Try surgery

Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

In 2009, over 220,000 people had bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) in the U.S. – these procedures are growing in popularity as obesity rates climb.1
On Monday, the International Diabetes Federation announced that they now recommend bariatric surgery as a treatment for diabetics with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more; and also as an alternative treatment for diabetics with a BMI of 30-35, either when diabetes is not being adequately controlled with medication or in the presence of major cardiovascular risk factors. As its rationale, the IDF cites effective reversal of diabetes, reduced health costs, reduced risk of all-cause mortality, and reductions in cardiovascular risk factors that occur as a result of the surgery.2 Read more...

Immunice for Immune Support

The reason isn’t due to increased health, but more medical intervention. More than ever before, our bodies are under attack from a variety of cultural shifts, including highly processed foods, increased stress, fast-paced lifestyles, and pollutants. These threats are creating highly acidic environments within our bodies and killing the cells we need to survive.

The human body needs an oxygenated environment to remain healthy. The pH (potential of Hydrogen) measures the ratio of acidity or alkalinity in a solution. Balance occurs when the pH slightly favors the alkalis. Acid excess stresses the organs. Over-acidification, or acidosis, results when there is more acid than the body can neutralize and detoxify. The more acid we have, the harder the organs – like adrenals, thyroid, and liver – have to work, which stresses the systems. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

The report is scheduled to be published in the October issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

"A lot of studies, including ours, have established a strong connection between binge drinking and impaired driving, which is sort of obvious on some level," he said. "What hasn't been looked at is how many people actually do get behind the wheel after a binge drinking episode."

So Naimi and his colleagues evaluated data from more than 14,000 adults in 13 states in 2003 and 14 states in 2004, who reported binge drinking and then answered additional questions. They were part of the Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System survey.

Binge drinking was defined as having five or more drinks during an occasion, such as an evening out or at a party. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

There are three goals of treatment for heart valve disease: protecting your valve from further damage; lessening symptoms; and repairing or replacing valves.

Protecting your valve from further damage.

If you have valve disease, you are at risk for developing endocarditis, a serious condition. People who have mitral valve prolapse without thickening or regurgitation/leaking are not at risk of developing endocarditis.

You are still at risk for endocarditis, even if your valve is repaired or replaced through surgery. To protect yourself:

Tell your doctors and dentist you have valve disease. You may want to carry an identification card with this information. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Atherosclerosis, the same plaques of fat, calcium and other related gunk that clogs up arteries and cause heart attacks usually cause it.

If you have PAD of the legs, you know it can be a miserable condition, causing pain and numbness. You might think the study just announced at the 2011 American Roentgen Ray Society's annual meeting of radiologists, currently underway in Chicago, is reason to rejoice.

After all, the researchers found that a large growth in screening for PAD has resulted in many more surgical procedures, especially angioplasty (which pushes open the plaques using catheters carrying tiny balloons and is often used in conjunction with stents to keep the arteries propped open) to treat the condition. So if PAD is being diagnosed and treated, that must mean progress in treating the disease is being made, right?

That's the first impression you might get from a quick look at the new study. But here's a breaking research story that shows the importance of looking - really looking - at all the facts and not relying on mainstream media's shallow coverage or someone simply rewriting a press release. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Results have been so promising that oncologists are now researching the combination of vitamin C with standard chemo drugs. Not surprisingly, vitamin C was found to boost the effectiveness of several chemo drugs so much that two clinical trials have been started. But recent research has also uncovered several natural compounds that boost the cancer-killing effects of vitamin C and may pave the way for highly effective, all-natural combination therapies in the future. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Researchers found no link between higher blood levels of vitamin D and lower rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma or cancers of the endometrium, esophagus, stomach, kidney, ovary and pancreas.

Vitamin D is obtained by the body through exposure to sunlight, certain foods such as oily fish, fortified foods and nutritional supplements.

Authors of a new study analyzed blood samples drawn from more than 12,000 men and women in 10 studies. The previous studies followed the patients for as long as 33 years, allowing researchers to determine if they developed cancer.Read more...
