We spend a huge amount of time and energy preparing for what sometimes amounts to a couple of days of fun. We shop, travel, visit relatives, clean, decorate, cook and socialize. We can expend as much energy in December as we do in three other months, combined. Often we get so wrapped up in our to-do list, we forget to have fun, get present to our intentions and enjoy our loved ones, many of whom we may only see once a year. While you may not feel you can cut back on all the holiday activities, you can certainly find moments to relax, restore, and experience the joy of the season. We've felt the difficult and sometimes crushing emotions that often accompany depression, like hopelessness and despair, frustration and confusion. You may have noticed other classic symptoms of depression, like the lack of energy and motivation, excessive sleep, or losing interest in activities you normally love. Pleasure decreases sharply and you may feel stuck and unable to move forward in your life. Sometimes these feelings can spill outwardly, looking and feeling like anger, even if they're not. Another aspect of our relationship with money can be thought of as spiritual, and perhaps the oldest spiritual practice around it is tithing. Tithing is a powerful way to acknowledge your Source and remind you that your relationship with money is not just a material relationship, but also an energetic or spiritual one. According to the Old Testament, tithing was widely practiced in ancient times as a way to care for those in need. Tithing means "one-tenth," and families would give away 10% of their earnings to be divided among the poor.

Making Friends with Money - Write It Down

In Part One and Part Two, we've talked about discovering the limiting beliefs, often unconscious, that keep you stuck, as well as learning from, being responsible for, and healing your past relationship with money. You may find yourself feeling guilty when you ask for money owed to you, for example. Or you may feel guilty when you pay bills late. You may feel elated when you see a deposit made to your account, or angry when you think of money stolen from you. It's been a tough time, and we're still reeling from it. It makes sense, then, that April is Stress Awareness Month. It's interesting that stress has become so common and affected our collective health so severely, we've actually dedicated a month to bring it to our attention. Our lives can often feel chaotic. Most of us have so much to do in little time. We earn a living, grow a business, care for our families, maintain relationships, sometimes the list seems endless. Global conflict is escalating. It can feel as if we've scant resources left over to care for ourselves, and we're just learning the devastating consequences of our stressful modern lives.

The Pleasure of Reading (and giveaway)

Read any good books lately? A few weeks ago, I took a walk along the Hudson River where it was a little cooler. I watched interesting people, enjoyed the scent of all the lovely roses on my path along with the scent of New York (which isn’t quite as lovely.) I helped a cute French couple on the subway find their way to the library. I enjoyed smiling at people and seeing them relax in response. My day was filled with sweet and simple moments. Life always brims with contrast, but never so much in my memory as right now. This feels like a most profound time for me. I’m experiencing important events with opposing feelings, both very...

You probably remember a loss from early childhood. It may have been a broken toy, or a beloved pet, or maybe your family moved away from a community you knew so well. As we grow older, we lose important possessions, best friendships and loved ones. It’s a natural part of our human experience, and yet we’re rarely prepared to deal with the grief that accompanies loss.

Just about every spiritual and philosophical path is based upon love and the importance of loving others. How is it that something so essential can become an addiction? In fact, a love addiction isn’t really about love at all, but actually stems from fear, usually the fear of intimacy.

While sex addiction focuses upon sexual activity, pornography and fantasy, a love addiction often includes sex but focuses primarily upon the intensity of romantic attraction. Some love addicts experience sexual anorexia, a lack of sexual desire.
