People don't know that not all dentists are 9-5 dentists, like myself. I have at The Center for Natural Dentistry; we are opened 4 days a week for about 10 hours each day. And what we do is we help people. But what happens after hours? What happens on the weekends? What happens after? If you an existing patient obviously you can call us and you will get either myself or Dr. Godes. But if after hours if you don't have a dentist and you’re not a patient of record in our office where do we send you? We’ll let me tell you about this. There is a new office in town. Been here for almost a year, and Dr. Irvin actually comes from that office. That office is actually called On Demand Dentist, fitting isn't it? (Dr. Irvin) Yep. (Dr. Marvin) What they do is when you need a dentist and you need one immediately, which is what On Demand Dentist is there for. It’s kind of like an urgent care for dentist. Why don't you tell me a little bit about what On Demand Dentist is? (Dr. Irvin) Well, On Demand Dentist is a practice and we have a bunch of dentist that are actually on call 24/7. So basically if you have any toothaches, or tooth pain, or anything of that nature you want to give us a call and one of our dentist will come down there and help you out, help you get out of pain. (Dr. Marvin) So it’s for people that lets say haven't been to the dentist in a while and they have excruciating pain, right? (Dr. Irvin) Yes, definitely. (Dr. Marvin) Ok so, how do people find you? (Dr. Irvin) So on the, they either go online and they Google search ODD or On Demand Dentist or emergency dentist around the area. We are located in San Diego, Claremont Mesa. (Dr. Marvin) Great. And then so they have a toothache, can you tell me you know what’s the difference between your practice and just a regular dental practice? (Dr. Irvin) Well, On Demand Dentist basically again is 24/7 its all the time so a regular dental practice you would call in and they would try to fit you in to the schedule, which is really packed, and the dentist is working constantly bouncing between patients. I have been practicing natural dentistry for about three years. I’ve been practicing dentistry for over 11 years. Some of the things that we do with natural dentistry is quite different than other dentistry and for those listeners that have been listening, they are quite intrigued and quite interested in what we do. You’re very fortunate to have a natural dentist that is close by and that can provide the type of dentistry that you’re probably going to be very interested in. Natural dentistry is different than regular dentistry because we focus more on health. We don’t focus on fixing the tooth. There is a difference because the tooth is part of the mouth which is part of the body. And when you fix the tooth, you should look at the body as possible side effects and we should look at it from the big picture that’s why we look at the whole body. That’s why it’s called holistic dentistry or natural dentistry. Just like you go to the store and you would look at a label. You go to the grocery store and you look at the label and you figure out what’s in it. So if there’s an apple over there, you’re going to figure out, okay, what’s in it? Did they use pesticides for it? Did they put waxes on it? Did they add fertilizers to make the bigger, make them plumpier? You don’t get those on apples but you do get those on certain items at the store. Let’s say you pick up some crackers or bag of potato chips or something like that. You look at the back and you look at the ingredients and you say, “Is this stuff good for me?” And if it’s not then you’re not going to go ahead and pick it up. But unfortunately in dentistry, in a lot of medicines, they don’t give you all that information. So if you asked a dentist, “Does this product have anything that I’m not compatible with?” Most dentists don’t understand. They don’t know and they don’t know how to test. So natural dentistry is all about safety. It’s all about doing the right thing for you as an individual because as I always say, what’s good for one person is not necessarily good for another person. So you need to get checked out individually. It’s just like some people are allergic to peanuts and some people are not. You know, you and I have spent more time in dentistry than I think most dentists. Dr. Nelson: I know. We’ve been doing a lot of dentistry and recommending certain processes and support. Dr. Kellas: Well, you know, I think that the most important doctor you have is a dentist because he can make you sick or he can help get you well and if you don’t get that right, all kinds of stuff comes out of that, right? Dr. Nelson: That’s -- how can a dentist make you sick? Dr. Kellas: Well, it’s interesting. That’s probably -- most people know about mercury fillings but… Dr. Nelson: Yes. Dr. Kellas: …but what very few people know about is nickel, crown, caps, bridges and root canals. You test -- we actually have surveys that say one out of three women are allergic to nickel. Dr. Nelson: Yes. Dr. Kellas: And that’s if inexpensive earrings bother their ears. So how often do you see people allergic to nickel? Dr. Nelson: All the time, especially I had a patient just last week or last two weeks, 11 year old came in. Dr. Kellas: Right. Dr. Nelson: And at four years old, her dentist decided to put some silver crowns on her molars. Dr. Kellas: Yes, I saw that. Dr. Nelson: And at four years old, about in that timeframe she started coming down with wheezing, asthma and… Dr. Kellas: You called me. Dr. Nelson: …sinus problems. Dr. Kellas: You called me in to look at that. Dr. Nelson: Yes, because I put the pieces together here and then I brought the pieces to the mother and said, “Here’s something that I think is going to fit this thing together because at four years old, when did you have this done?” And she said, “About four years old.” “And when did all these symptoms start?” Dr. Kellas: Right. Dr. Nelson: “Right after that.” Dr. Kellas: That’s right. Dr. Nelson: And so all this started proceeding and now she’s 11 and she’s having major problems with sensitivities, allergies, sinus problems, constant drip. Dr. Kellas: And I find a lot… Dr. Nelson: Mucus. Dr. Kellas: …of people who have gluten intolerance tend to have nickel intolerance. Dr. Nelson: Yes. Dr. Kellas: They kind of tend to run together and I’m not saying always but it’s good correlation. Dr. Nelson: I started -- when she came in, I was -- we were talking about some of the aspects of what sets this up – fungus and yeast, maybe some antibiotics and I said, “Dental can set this up. Have you had any dental work?” And I said, “Let me open your mouth.” I saw the three crowns. Dr. Kellas: Yeah. Ain’t that something? Dr. Nelson: And there’s a… Dr. Kellas: And, of course, they’re opposing each other, which means… Dr. Nelson: Yes. Dr. Kellas: …when they go together, they make a battery. Put it this way, folks. If you can put aluminum foil in your mouth and it zaps you, that’s the early indicator you have a battery in your mouth. Dr. Nelson: That’s right. Dr. Kellas: Now, how do you get a battery? You can – mercury fillings and nickel. We actually test for voltage… Dr. Nelson: Yes. Dr. Kellas: …and vapor at the clinic to find out if you’ve got too much mercury and too much voltage.
