What inspired you to author this book?

Anonymously Yours was inspired by my fascination with the duality of how we present ourselves online versus who we are in real life. Social media has blurred that line so much—it’s easy to curate a perfect image, but behind the screen, things are often far more complicated. I wanted to explore that tension through a character who isn’t always likable, because real people aren’t always likable either. There’s value in writing flawed, messy heroines who make bad decisions, who can be difficult or impulsive, but who are still worth understanding. For me, that’s where the most interesting stories live.

Holly Bourne was the writer who first made me feel understood. Kathleen Glasgow has also had a huge impact on me. Her characters are the only ones that have ever made me feel truly seen and heard. I’m lucky enough to lean on her during events now, but long before that, her work helped me feel less alone. Both of them have shaped who I am as a writer and as a person.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

Writing Anonymous Confessions of a Broken Heart wasn’t easy. One of the biggest challenges was allowing myself to be vulnerable on the page, especially when writing about the assault. I had to tap into some of my own experiences and emotions, which was painful at times but necessary to make the story feel real. Sitting with those feelings and turning them into fiction took time, but it was also healing in its own way.

What inspired you to become a writer, and how did your journey begin?

My journey started with a spark of creativity that ignited my imagination and led me to pursue writing as a form of expression and communication. The book was about Dawn, going to a local grocery store with her mom, seeing a shoplifter, and devising a plan to stop the shoplifter in his tracks. Dawn foiled the shoplifter, he was arrested, and she was rewarded for her heroic act. I look back and have always had an eye for social justice and helping to make the world a better place. My second book, It's Time to Shine: A Guide for Professionals On How to Advance In Their Careers, was published in August and designed to inspire readers to achieve self-fulfillment in their lives and careers. My third book, Preparing for a Career in the Legal Profession: For High School and College Students Interested in Becoming Lawyers, was recently published and designed to encourage middle school, high school, and college students to pursue the field of law. Can you describe your daily writing routine? How do you structure your writing day?

My daily writing routine involves a three-prong approach. First, I must get to a quiet place to collect my thoughts. Second, I must outline my thoughts and concepts. The writing process requires me to dedicate time to focus on my craft. I structure my writing day by outlining my goals, creating a conducive environment, and immersing myself in the creative process.

What is the most challenging aspect of writing, and how do you overcome it?

The most challenging aspect of writing is when I feel stuck, and the creativity needs to flow. Though it can result in frustration, I overcome it by staying encouraged. I do this by listening to upbeat music and daily affirmations. Sometimes, I must go outside for a walk or go to a place where I can spark my creativity, such as seeing a good movie. I must stay disciplined so the challenges do not overcome me.

Can you share an example of a significant change you made to a book based on feedback or during revisions?

An important change I made to a book based on feedback was adding a chapter to my book that was not originally there. I shared a draft of my book, It's Time to Shine, with a friend. She told me the book sounded too pollyannish and recommended that I add a chapter on overcoming setbacks and disappointments. The revision helped to complete the book and the story. That added chapter is the one I received the most feedback about, as it is very helpful to the reader.

Are you currently working on any new projects? Can you share something about what's coming next?

I am passionate about helping the next generation. I have written a pre-law guide for the students and next, plan to create pre-law workbooks that children in elementary, middle and high school can utilize to help them be inspired to become lawyers.

What are you currently reading, and how do you choose the books you read?

I prefer books based on diverse genres, authors, and themes that challenge and inspire me. I am reading Sheila Johnson's book Walk Through Fire, a unique story about an African American female billionaire who overcame roadblocks, setbacks, and challenges in her personal and professional career. It's an incredible journey of how she amassed success as a WNBA team and hotel chain owner through resilience and perseverance.

How do you want to be remembered as an author? What impact do you hope your books will have?

As an author, I aspire to be remembered for my ability to evoke emotion, provoke thought, and inspire change through storytelling. I hope my books leave a lasting impact, sparking conversations, fostering empathy, and empowering readers to embrace their inner strength and shine brightly in the world.

What were your struggles or obstacles you had to overcome to get this book written?

One of the biggest challenges in writing Smart Money Kids was translating complex financial concepts into something that actually makes sense for parents and kids. Let’s be honest—most finance books are either too boring, too complicated, or both. I didn’t want this book to feel like a dry economics lecture. Another struggle? My daughter. Not because she wasn’t supportive—quite the opposite! But every time I tried to write, she’d suddenly need me right that second—whether it was for homework, snacks, or an urgent discussion about a new game she wanted to buy (with my money, of course!). It was the perfect reminder of why I was writing this book in the first place: Kids are already making financial decisions every day—often without even realizing it. And of course, there were all the parents on the playground and at work constantly saying, “Hey, you work in banking—how should I invest my money?” That was when I knew: If finance was still a mystery for so many adults, how were kids supposed to figure it out? So, I powered through, fueled by countless cups of coffee, endless rewrites, and the belief that financial literacy shouldn’t be a luxury—it should be something every child learns from day one.

I felt an obligation to tell the truth about what really happens behind those walls.

Dr. Mel: Your book sheds light on the racial injustices embedded in the prison system. Can you speak more about how incarceration disproportionately affects Black and Brown communities?

Elliott Eberhardt: Absolutely. The system isn’t broken—it’s functioning exactly as it was designed. Black and Brown people are policed more aggressively, sentenced more harshly, and given fewer opportunities for rehabilitation. Prisons have become modern-day plantations, feeding off marginalized communities while offering little to no real solutions. My book highlights these injustices and encourages young people to think critically about the system before they find themselves caught in it.

Dr. Mel: You describe prison as a place that strips people of their dignity and identity. How did you personally hold on to hope and a sense of self?

Elliott Eberhardt: It wasn’t easy. The system is designed to break you—physically, mentally, and emotionally. But I found strength in self-reflection, reading, and staying connected to my purpose. I had to remind myself daily that I was more than just an inmate number. Writing this book became my way of reclaiming my identity and making sure my experience wasn’t wasted.

Dr. Mel: Many young people glorify street life and don’t see incarceration as a deterrent. How do you hope your book changes that mindset?

Dr. Mel: What are some of the biggest misconceptions people have about prison?

Elliott Eberhardt: One of the biggest myths is that everyone inside is just a violent criminal. The truth is, a lot of people are there because of bad circumstances, poor legal representation, or simply being Black or Brown in America. Another misconception is that prison reforms you. It doesn’t—it’s a cycle designed to keep people coming back. The real work of change happens when you decide to break free from that mindset.

Dr. Mel: Your book is also a call to action. What advice do you have for young people who might be at a crossroads in their life?

Elliott Eberhardt: First, know your worth. You don’t have to prove anything to anybody by making reckless choices. Second, think long-term. The streets will never love you back, and prison will take everything from you. And finally, find a mentor—someone who’s been where you are and made it out. If I can reach even one person and help them avoid the mistakes I made, this book will have done its job.

What inspired you to author this book?

I saw a growing ideology around AI—one that treats it as an almost mythical force capable of solving every problem, replacing human intelligence, and reshaping industries with little risk or consequence. The reality is far more nuanced. AI has transformative potential, but it’s not infallible, and when businesses treat it as such, they lose sight of what truly matters: human connection, trust, and intentionality. Infailible was born out of the need to separate fact from fiction, to strip away the hype, and to examine AI’s role in business and society critically.

Where did you get the inspiration for your book’s cover?

The idea started with a single word: Infallible—the perception that AI is flawless, all-knowing, and superior. But by placing “AI” in the middle, it transforms into Infailible—a term I created to define the illusion of perfection we assign to artificial systems, which blinds us to their limitations. This simple shift reflects the book’s core message: when AI sits at the center of our decisions without human oversight, we risk failure. Michael Crichton - although this is a non-fiction business book, I've always loved the stories that Crichton created.

The journey to write this book was filled with many challenges and emotional hurdles. Capturing the essence of a half-American, half-Iranian boy's life during the tumultuous times of the Iranian revolution required a deep emotional connection to my past. The emotional weight of exploring themes like betrayal, abuse, and the struggle for identity and redemption added another layer of complexity. Also, having English as my 3rd language was an obstacle to overcome with the help of my writing coach, Ken Scott. Additionally, portraying the transformation from a troubled youth in Tehran to a Special Forces operative in the U.S. Army involved revisiting my military life and the inner workings of special operations, which demanded deep emotional scars. Perhaps one of the most significant obstacles was balancing historical accuracy with the narrative's dramatic elements while maintaining sensitivity to military operations, real-life experiences I have had, and those who lived through such challenging times. The personal connection to the protagonist’s journey also made the writing process emotionally taxing but ultimately rewarding, as it allowed the story to resonate more deeply with readers who appreciate the struggle for personal and political freedom.
