Holocaust Scholars to Discuss Deportations of Jews in Summer Workshop at Yad Vashem

July 7, 2014 the International Institute for Holocaust Research of Yad Vashem begins its 7th annual summer workshop for Holocaust scholars. The scholarly international workshop, which concludes on Thursday, July 10, explores in depth various aspects of the many deportations of Jews throughout Nazi-occupied Europe and will include presentations, lectures and discussions by leading experts from Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel and the United States. The workshop is made possible by the generous support of the Gutwirth Family Fund.

The theme of the week-long workshop this year, entitled: “Transport: The Deportation of the Jews During the Nazi Period” will also discuss Yad Vashem's online research project, exhibition and database entitled "Transports to Extinction" which provides an overview of all aspects of the transports, while focusing on four main issues: reconstruction of the transport's route, information on persons involved in organizing the transport, information about the Jewish deportees and recollections of the survivors of the transports. Since 2007 the International Institute for Holocaust Research at Yad Vashem has been studying the transports as an extensive phenomenon that transcended individual states, rather than in the context of a study of the Holocaust in a specific country or a single community. The transports are seen as significant in its own right and not as merely a technical stage during which Jews were transported from one place to another. Indeed, the transports played a considerable role in translating the grim theory of the “Final Solution of the Jewish Problem” into reality. The online research project is made possible by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the estate of Isaac Jacques Cohen of France, survivor from Thessaloniki and SNCF - Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français.

One of the most important factors for the victory in the Second World War was the industrial production of the warring sides. In Greece, when talking about the war industry during WWII we mean primarily the plants producing weapons and ammunition, as well as the iron industry and machine works which either adjusted their production chain to military goods, by repairing weapons and ammunition, or manufactured and repaired ironwork and mechanical parts in parallel and complementary to the core war industry. In this presentation I will try to use the example of important iron industries in the center and the periphery to explore the importance of the Greek industrial production for the supply and maintenance of the Axis war machine in Greece. I will explore the economic penetration and cooperation of Axis with the local industries, the strategies developed by both sides to maintain a mutual supply balance of raw materials and a fulfillment of orders in an inflationary economy and also the benefits each side expected and eventually gained from this partnership. I will also explore technology issues (transport, energy, expertise, adaptation, etc.) relevant to the capabilities and limitations of the Greek iron industry, as were those formed by the choices of economic and industrial policy in interwar Greece and in turn influenced critically the capacity and potential of the Greek industry during WWII.

Ένας από τους σημαντικότερους παράγοντες για τη νίκη στο Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο ήταν η βιομηχανική παραγωγή των αντιμαχόμενων πλευρών. Μιλώντας για πολεμική βιομηχανία κατά τον Β΄ ΠΠ στην ελληνική περίπτωση, θα πρέπει να έχουμε στο νου μας κατά πρώτο λόγο τις μονάδες παραγωγής κατεξοχήν οπλικών συστημάτων και πυρομαχικών, καθώς και τη σιδηροβιομηχανία και τα μηχανουργεία που είτε προσάρμοζαν την αλυσίδα παραγωγής σε πολεμικά είδη παράγοντας και επιδιορθώνοντας όπλα και πυρομαχικά, είτε κατασκεύαζαν και επιδιόρθωναν σιδηροκατασκευές και μηχανικά μέρη πολεμικής χρήσης λειτουργώντας παράπλευρα και συμπληρωματικά στην κατεξοχήν πολεμική βιομηχανία. Στην ανακοίνωση αυτή θα επιχειρήσω μέσα από το παράδειγμα σημαντικών σιδηροβιομηχανικών επιχειρήσεων του κέντρου και της περιφέρειας, να διερευνήσω τη σημασία που είχε για τον Άξονα η ελληνική βιομηχανική παραγωγή για την τροφοδοσία και συντήρηση της πολεμικής μηχανής του στην Ελλάδα. Θα διερευνήσω τους τρόπους οικονομικής διείσδυσης και συνεργασίας του Άξονα με τις επιχειρήσεις, τις στρατηγικές που ανέπτυξαν οι δυο πλευρές για να διατηρήσουν μια εκατέρωθεν ισορροπία προμηθειών πρώτων και καύσιμων υλών από τη μια και εκτέλεσης παραγγελιών από την άλλη μέσα σε μια πληθωριστική και οικονομία και τέλος των οφελών που ανέμεναν και που τελικά αποκόμισαν η κάθε πλευρά για λογαριασμό της από αυτή τη συνεργασία. Θα διερευνηθούν επίσης ζητήματα τεχνολογίας (των μεταφορών, της ενέργειας, της τεχνογνωσίας, της προσαρμογής κλπ.) που άπτονται των δυνατοτήτων και των περιορισμών της ελληνικής σιδηροβιομηχανίας, όπως αυτές διαμορφώθηκαν από τους συσχετισμούς και τις επιλογές της οικονομικής και βιομηχανικής πολιτικής στην Ελλάδα του μεσοπολέμου και με τη σειρά τους επηρέασαν σε καίριο βαθμό την δυναμικότητα και τις δυνατότητες της ελληνικής βιομηχανίας στη διάρκεια του Β΄ ΠΠ.

EHRI Maps the Greek Holocaust Archives

On 4 December 2012, an EHRI workshop on Greek Holocaust-related archives took place in Athens. Presided by Dr. Veerle Vanden Daelen (Ceges-Soma, 'Identification & Investigation' Work Package leader in EHRI) and co-organized by Dr. Agiatis Benardou (Athena RC/IMIS, EHRI user requirements), an EHRI delegation met with a representative sample of the Greek Holocaust research community, including members of major universities, museums and archival institutions.

The result after a long day’s work was a detailed overview of collections, institutions and research and documentation projects which EHRI can now use as a starting point to further elaborate this case study on Greek archives. EHRI has already set up a similar project in Ukraine, combining local expertise and partnerships with ongoing documentation projects to achieve an integrated overview of the Holocaust-related archival collections in a given country. The workshop in Athens definitely provided the necessary knowledge and contacts to move ahead with the important yet complicated task of connecting Greek Holocaust archives.

In this lecture, historian Nikos Tzafleris drawing mainly upon the YDIP

(Agency for the Custody of Jewish Properties) records will try to focus on

the interrelations and the common interests between the Nazis and the

politico-ideological, social and private economic interests of Christian

Greeks, who exploited the opportunity to erase the significant presence of

the Jews in the everyday life of the city and the economic competition of

the Jews by appropriating their properties.

Abstract

Before the Holocaust, the Jewish community of Thessaloniki, by far the

largest Jewish community in Greece, reached almost 56,000 members. However,

after the end of the Occupation not only had 96% of it been vanished

-putting down the number to only 1,950 - but also their properties, houses,

shops, industrial companies, means of production, even their cemetery had

ceased to exist or had changed hands. It becomes more than apparent that the

explanation of the extent, the importance and the way in which this

unprecedented violent expropriation and uprooting took place, rests not only

on the role of the Nazis, but also on the Greek state bureaucracy (local

authorities) and on the willing Greek collaborators (National Union Hellas

[EEE], Greek National-Socialist Party, and refugee committies from Thrace

and several local enterprises). Actually, hardly any serious plan for the

persecution and extermination of the Greek Jews and the looting of their

properties would have succeeded without firstly, the great concern of

private economic interests and secondly, the complicity of a society with an

underlying anti-Semitic ideology and mentality.

ΣΤΙΣ 28 -10-2010 ΤΑ ΑΠΟΚΑΛΥΠΤΗΡΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΜΝΗΜΕΙΟΥ ΕΘΝΙΚΗΣ ΣΥΜΦΙΛΙΩΣΗΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΑΝΑΒΡΑ ΜΑΓΝΗΣΙΑΣ

MΝΗΜΕΙΟ ΕΘΝΙΚΗΣ ΣΥΜΦΙΛΙΩΣΗΣ ΣΤΗΝ ΑΝΑΒΡΑ ΜΑΓΝΗΣΙΑΣ

Τα αποκαλυπτήρια του Μνημείου Εθνικής Συμφιλίωσης έγιναν τελικά, λόγω τεχνικών δυσκολιών, ανήμερα της Εθνικής Γιορτής στις 28 Οκτωβρίου 2010. Ήταν μια συγκινητική τελετή, παρόλο που ο καιρός ήταν πολύ άσχημος και βροχερός.

Το πρόγραμμα της εκδήλωσης ήταν αρκετά πλούσιο, μιας και συνδυάστηκε με τη σχολική εθνική γιορτή. Μετά την εκκλησία συγκεντρώθηκαν όλοι -αρχές του τόπου, μαθητές του σχολείου και συγχωριανοί-, μπροστά στο μνημείο στην Κάτω Πλατεία, κρατώντας ομπρέλες, γιατί ήδη έβρεχε από το πρωί. Μετά το τρισάγιο στη μνήμη των πεσόντων που έκανε ο παπα-Θόδωρος Γκλαντζούνης, ο Πρόεδρος της Κοινότητας Δημήτρης Χρ. Τσουκαλάς έκανε τα αποκαλυπτήρια του μνημείου, και στη συνέχεια έγιναν καταθέσεις στεφάνων από τον Πρόεδρο της Κοινότητας, τους μαθητές του Νηπιαγωγείου Ανάβρας, τους μαθητές του Δημ. Σχολείου και του Αθλητικού Ομίλου. Ιδιαίτερα συγκινητική υπήρξε η στιγμή της κατάθεσης του δάφνινου στεφανιού από τον αγωνιστή Δημήτρη Ρουχά, ο οποίος είδε να εκπληρώνεται μια μεγάλη επιθυμία του για την οποία είχε συνεισφέρει και οικονομικά. Το πρώτο μέρος της εκδήλωσης στον ανοικτό χώρο έκλεισε με την τήρηση ενός λεπτού σιγής στη μνήμη των απωλεσθέντων και αγνοουμένων Αναβριωτών.

Στη συνέχεια μεταφέρθηκαν όλοι στην Αίθουσα Πολλαπλών Χρήσεων «π. Αθανάσιος Μηλιώνης», όπου συνεχίστηκε η εκδήλωση των αποκαλυπτηρίων του μνημείου. Η Γραμματέας της Κοινότητας διάβασε το σύντομο χαιρετισμό των δωρητών* που δεν παρέστησαν λόγω έκτακτων οικογενειακών υποχρεώσεων: «Αισθανόμαστε μεγάλη χαρά και συγκίνηση που, σε ένα τόπο που η μητέρα μας έχει προσφέρει τόσα πολλά, γίνεται αποδεκτή η δωρεά μας από την Κοινότητα και τοποθετείται ένα έργο του πατέρα μας, και μάλιστα με τέτοιο συμβολικό χαρακτήρα! Ευχαριστούμε το Κοιν. Συμβούλιο και τον Πρόεδρο για την αποδοχή της δωρεάς και ευχόμαστε σε όλους Χρόνια Πολλά».

Ακολούθησε μια εξαιρετική, σύντομη και μεστή ομιλία από το νέο ιστορικό Νίκο Τζαφλέρη για την Εθνική Αντίσταση και τον Εμφύλιο Πόλεμο στην περιοχή της Ανάβρας, η οποία παρατίθεται εδώ.

Μετά από αυτά ξεκίνησε στην ήδη κατάμεστη αίθουσα η σχολική γιορτή για την 28η Οκτωβρίου με ποιήματα, σκέτς και τραγούδια από τους μαθητές του Νηπιαγωγείου και του Δημοτικού.

* Το μνημείο, που αποτελείται από γλυπτό που απεικονίζει περιστέρι, το σύμβολο της ειρήνης, και είναι έργο του γλύπτη Λευτέρη Βαλάκα (1944-1982), είναι δωρεά στην Κοινότητα των παιδιών του γλύπτη Αντώνη, Κώστα και Νάσου Βαλάκα, που είναι και παιδιά της Τεχνικής Συμβούλου (αμισθί) της Κοινότητας Μάχης Καραλή από τον πρώτο της γάμο.
