HRH Prince Philip

I woke up yesterday to the terrible new of the passing of HRH Prince Philip. It has been hard for me to digest. I just thought the Iron Duke would live well past his hundredth year. I have seen HRH a number of times in person. I first met him at a private charitable dinner in Montreal 30 years ago. He was very good humoured and laughed at the gag gifts he was given. This was one of his many private to the Great Dominion. The Last time i saw HRH in person was 10 years ago at a state dinner in Toronoto. My friends MarkSteyn and Ben Woodfinen have written lovely tributes , far better than I ever could.

I am not completely sure why I am so sad. It may be because I worry about Our Sovereign Lady, who must be devastated by his loss. One line of our <a href=https://www.classical-music.com/features/works/god-save-the-queen-lyrics/>Royal anthem </a> says the Sovereign is our Mother Prince and friend, so yet must her husband be like the Father of the Commonwealth. It is like losing a member of Our Great Imperial Family to which we all belong. HRH has done so much for his family, Canada and the Commonwealth. I understand a statue of him will be built on the Mall. Maybe the fourth plinth of the Nelson Memorial? I ve also heard that perhaps a new Royal Yacht will be commissioned and named after HRH.

HRH should be honoured and cherished for all he has done for us and for his absolute support of HM The Queen. HM and HRH are symbols of stability in uncertain times. Perhaps that is why I feel so unsettled now. I pray for the repose of his soul.

An Unsafe Space

review I just attended the premiere of my friend Richard Klagsburn play An Unsafe Space in Toronto at the Tranzac Club 292 Brunswick. If you know me, you know that I go to a lot of theatre. I was very impressed by A Safe Space. It was very well written and very funny. The cast was very professional and talented. I particularly enjoyed the performance of the lead actor Craig Lauzon. The entire cast was impressive. The subject matter was only too relevant in this age of political correctness, academic closemindedness and deplatforming. The tale was told without preachiness but with humour. Klagsburn's writing is far funnier than most of the shows on television today. I have s After the show there was a talkback with Sky Gilbert one of the co-founders of Buddies in Bad Times Theater who has also experienced his own version of deplatforming. It was an immensely enjoyable evening. And I am not saying that just as one of the sponsors of this piece, I really think you should see this play. Tickets are still available and it is on until January 20,2019, at the Tranzac Club 292 Brunswick, Toronto. My friend Andrew Lawton enjoyed it as well. Bravo Richard Klagsburn and the entire cast!!! King Charles III ( spoiler alert)

I have quite scrupulously avoided seeing this play for 4 years, since I first heard of its existence in its premiere at The Almeida in London. I am a staunch monarchist and even though I see a lot of plays , I knew this one would upset me. I bought a Mirvish subscription, as I have for many years , and it was part of the season.
The play takes place after the death of Our Sovereign Lady. ( an event that I pray will be many years in the future) and the succession of Prince Charles. It is Our Monarchy , the game of thrones edition.
The sets were fairly simple and the script is written in sometimes rhyming free verse. It makes the members of the Royal Family look weak and venal. That the obvious bonds of family and fealty are non existent. That the sons would unseat the father. That Kate is Lady Macbeth. That the armed services would not obey their oaths of fealty.
I guess is was meant to be more of a Shakespearean fable, complete with maternal ghost.
Rhe Prince off Wales knows his constitutional role very well. I doubt he would allow th events of the play, after all he was schooled by Elizabeth the Great.
I did not enjoy this play, but mostly because of its plot. The acting was good. It is just not a play for anyone who knows anything about The Crown.

Its is the 150th anniversary of the founding of our Great Dominion. I arrived in Canada in 1963 from Kerala India with my Mom Dr Rachel Eappen. My father came to Canada to complete his PhD in Physics.
I am extraordinarily grateful to this wonderful land. My family and I have prospered here. I have made many friends here and have enjoyed the beauty and generosity of the Canadian people. My loyalty to the Monarchy is part of my love for tithe Great Dominion. I was taught that The Sovereign is the living embodiment of Canada. I used to sing God Save the Queen daily in the first few years of primary school.

I remember the 100th anniversary of Confederation. I was 6 in 1967. I remember expo 1967 and the wonders of that great year.

The celebrations this year seem a little muted. They shouldn't be. We are a great Dominion. WE are prosperous , welcoming and have been a major force for good in the world. I see more greatness coming , especially if he increase our ties with the Commonwealth starting with the senior Realms ( #Canzuk) and then the wider Commonwealth.

I wish all of my fellow Canadians a wonderful Dominion day. We will prosper and succeed together. We are all brothers and sisters.

I am somewhat shocked by the UK election results. I had expected a 130 seat Tory majority.I am a Canadian Tory, but I want conservative governments through out the senior Realms of the Commonwealth. I would not have backed May for leader. Andrea Leadsome seemed the better choice and she was a Brexiteer. May kind of grew on me. I enjoyed watching her spar with the communist corbyn. So what happened?
1.As Canadian politicos have learned don't call an election when you already have a mandate.
2. The Tory manifesto was horrible. As a Canadian friend living in London told me, it could have been written by the NDP ( Canadian socialist party)
3. May over estimated her personal popularity. The Tories won huge gains in local elections a few weeks ago. In this election the branding was all MRS May very little sign of the Tory brand. I m surprised by this, Lynton Crosby.
4. The Tory campaign was a gong show. May refused to debate!!! Was she afraid? She did it in the house frequently. She should have taken on Corbyn anywhere.
5, kids seem to want free stuff. A lot of the young seem to have come out to support the crazy corbyn manifesto.
5. Given 1-4 a lot of people voted to give MRS May a bloody nise( in the words of one of my Uk friends) I think more people did it thinking the Tories would still get a majority. [NDP election in Alberta]
So what now . I am a Unionist!!! Sturgeon has been defanged. The Scots do not want another divisive pointless referendum. I suspect Sturgeons "leadership " is ar risk. It was great seeing Alex Salmond being defeated by a Tory. The DUP is pretty conservative and the despise the IRA loving corbyn. I met Lord Trimble ( former DUP leade) at a Thatcher dinner . He is pretty conservative. I expect they will be a stable partner. They voted Tory in the past , I don't see that happening.
It's time for a new leader and a real conservative manifesto. The UK Tories could learn from their Canadian cousins. Have policies proposed from the grass roots.
Brexit must happen . It should be a Hard Brexit. The Uk must return to the family they abandoned The Commonwealth . The reaction of the EU has shown the contempt that f the EU for the British people, There is still a massive mandate for Brexit. I think this arrangement may be stable ( DUNN fein dont sit so a majority is 321) but if it is not a better leader and Manifesto will win a Tory majority.

Finally I wish only the best for the UKas do the vast majority of Canadians , Australians and New Zealand's . You are our Ally Our friends and our family. # Canzuk

#Brexit!!!!! I have not hidden my view that The United Kingdom would be better off out of the bureaucratic, over reaching eu. The sheer arrogance of the eu officials during the campaign was enough to drive the people of the UK out.
Now is the time for Britain's traditional allies in the Commonwealth and the United States to immediately negotiate free trade deals with our UK brothers and sisters. This is an historic time, the Uk turned its back on the Commonwealth in 1975 , but now the time has come to reunite with old friends and family.
The hysteria of some in the UK is over the top. The sun will continue to shine on UK that is more free outside the eu. The eu has no one to blame but itself. I expect votes by many other states to leave this bureaucratic nightmare.

I had the chance to meet Pascale Dery at the Cavendish Mall a few weeks ago. I am very impressed. she will be an excellent Conservative Candidate for Mont Royal. She is a well known journalist. She is fluently tri lingual . Well read and very aware of the riding, she has lived in TMR and Cote St Luc since childhood.
It was great to meet her husband and children as well as her father.
That day my friend MP Michelle Rempel flew in to show her support. It was great to see how Pascale interacted with her potential voters in the mall. She has a strong group of dynamic volunteers ,who have been busy selling memberships.

In my opinion Pascale is the ideal candidate to take The riding of Mont Royal for the CPC. I urge you to volunteer, donate and vote for Pascale!!

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Her Majesty's Australian PM Tony Abbott. I despise the leftist republican Malcolm Turnbull. He is a labour wolf dressed in LNP clothing. I am relieved that the spill attempt has been defeated. Our Aussie cousins seem to use the spill all the time. In their variation of Westminster democracy the caucus is in charge of choosing the leader. It is not a bad system but changing the leader like you change your underwear is a labour thing. The Supreme Court of Canada prescribes Death

The SCOC under chief injustice maclachlan has further embraced a culture of death. It was a 9-0 decision. I am sure the bully chief injustice was instrumental in that. Perhaps these unelected, unaccountable judges should be the executioners in these cases. We have a public health care system which is rapidly running out of money. We have a lot of elderly and infirm people. So now the liberal left has a solution. kill off the old and infirm. We have inadequate palliative care services. We have shortages of hospital beds. I am sure the old and infirm will be manipulated to die. I believe in patient autonomy. A patient has the absolute right to refuse any therapy. The government has no right to force me as a physician to offend my conscience. Unfortunately the College of Physicians in Ontario doesn't seem to understand that. I don't think you will find many doctors who will violate the Hippocratic Oath and kill their patients. It will also poison the doctor patient relationship. Almost every palliative care physician I know opposes doctor assisted suicide. The supreme court under injustice maclachlan has give a series of decisions that are against free speech and pro death ( including the insite decision). injustice maclachlan cannot retire fast enough( Unfortunately 2017). I think the government needs to teach these activists a lesson. Use the notwithstanding clause. injustice maclachlan has gone rogue. She needs to be reminded of the supremacy of parliament. Barbara Kay understands. We need more available palliative care. Patients who are suicidal and at end of life, usually change their minds if given adequate palliative care.

I loved Whitney Houston. She was a big part of music to me in the "80s. I was deeply saddened to watch her descend into drugs and was also saddened by her death. I was never a fan of bobby brown.
I pray for their daughter who was badly affected by the drug use and stupidity of her parents. Perhaps people have the right to destroy themselves with drugs, but they don't have the right to destroy the lives of their children.

It was great to see Mark Steyn. He was in conversation with Heather Reisman at INdigo bookstore in Toronto. Steyn was funny and witty and totally on point on subjects ranging from Islam to the twilight of Western civilization. His questioner was hardly his match.

2014 Christian, Physician, wife , mother, grandmother, aunt

My Mother was the youngest of 12 children. My mother tells the story that her mother missed her oldest sister's wedding, because she was in labour! She was born in a very small town, Karthiapaly Kerala India. She is descended from an ancient Syrian Christian family. Her Mother's family is supposed to have been one of the original 7 Brahmin families converted to Christianity in 52 AD by Our Lord and Saviour's

disciple St Thomas. St Thomas Christian are jokingly referred to as doubting Christians.

Rachel was raised mostly by her older sisters ,and by all accounts was fairly spoiled, inspite of the financial problems of her family. She studied medicine in Madras at Vellore Christian Medical school and graduated in 1950. She often worked as a doctor for the very poor. She tells stories of seeing 800 patients in one day!

I don't think she wanted to get married, but her family had other ideas. At age 36 one of her uncles told her she should get married and promptly found her a husband. She only met my dad Joy Eappen once , before marrying him. My dad was studying to get his PhD in Montreal at McGill University. He was also descended of an ancient Syrian Christian family. Soon after the marriage she became pregnant with me. My dad returned to his studies in Montreal . My Mom had me 9 months after my dad left. I was quite ill with a heart condition.She and her older sister looked after me at my mothers ancestral home. My Mother went back to work as a doctor when I was about 6 months old . We lived in Karthiapaly until my dad saved enough money to fly us to Canada.

My mother and I arrived in Montreal aug 1963. Within a few months my mother was pregnant with my younger brother Mohan. My mom went from being a working woman with servants and an older sister looking after her to being pretty isolated in an appartment in Canada. She had to start cooking and cleaning for the first time in her life. She had to live with a husband that she hardly knew. My dad insisted that my mother cook like his mother , who had died before the marriage. We were among the only people of Indian origin in Montreal in those days. My mother became quite depressed early in her second pregnancy and was admitted to the Allen Memorial when she stopped talking. The psychiatrists let her out when she told them she was a physician and was just overwhelmed.

My mom decided to interrupt her career, to raise my brother and I. She taught me how to read, write and do arithmetic before I was 5 years old.

She volunteered at the library of our school. She became an integral part of our Church. Her meat puffs that she made for the church bazaar were legendary.

When I reached 16 my mother went back to work as a doctor and passed the licensing exam. She was in Quebec so she learned French in her late 40s . She passed the written test right away but had to take the oral exam 5 times before she passed it. She then went back to work as a GP until she was 70.

The years marched on. I also went to McGill and became an endocrinologist. My mom enjoyed discussing medical issues with me, but it was she that the family turned to for medical advice. She got to travel to visit friends and family in the US, UK and of course India. Her greatest trip was to the Holy Land. The pictures of the trip show that Mom was in bliss. To see the places where Jesus lived made her very happy.

My brother got married and adopted 2 children Mathew and Rebecca. They were a joy for my Mom

My dad passed away in 2001 after a long illness. Mom became very withdrawn and quite ill herself . She wouldn't eat or drink or get out of bed. We hired a young woman from the Philipines named Ailis. For the next 12 years Ailis and then other caretakers helped restore my Mom to health and became the daughters she never had.

I took Mom to India one last time in 2010. She was 86. At that point she was the only one of her siblings still alive. Her many nieces and Nephews and their kids and even grand Kids were very happy to see her.

After that trip she started deteriorating. She started asking me why God didn't take her. she outlived several much younger friends. Her memory started going..

In the last year she had a very hard time. She had a stroke and spent months in rehab. She was finally well enough to go home. She got up one night and fell and broke her hip. After the surgery, she was very listless. She stopped eating and drinking. She would eat the odd cherry and a bit of coffee. she told us she didn't want an intravenous or a feeding tube or any heroic measures. Without eating or drinking she faded away. She passed away peacefully with no pain.

My mother was loving, kind, very intelligent and talented. My brother and I owe her so much. She lived a long and happy life, but I was still not ready for her to go.
