The Twelfth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the long-running BBC television science fiction programme Doctor Who. He is portrayed by Scottish actor Peter Capaldi. Within the series' narrative, the Doctor is a time travelling, humanoid alien from a race known as the Time Lords. When the Doctor is critically injured, he can regenerate his body, and in doing so gain a new physical appearance, and with it a distinct new personality; this plot mechanism has allowed the Doctor to be portrayed by a series of actors over the decades since the programme's inception in 1963.

Capaldi made his first, very brief appearance as the Doctor in the show's fiftieth anniversary special "The Day of the Doctor" (2013), as one of the thirteen incarnations of the Doctor who are summoned to save Gallifrey from destruction. Capaldi's first full appearance was at the end of the Christmas special "The Time of the Doctor". He will be accompanied in the eighth series by incumbent companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman).

Now why someone would want to belong to an order called the Headless Monks and be surprised when the main requirement is to NOT have your head...is beyond me...

Yet another misunderstood monster from Doctor Who. Seems as though us humans are so damn quick to identify something as being threatening..sheesh...

The Hath are aliens that appear as tall, roughly humanoid creatures with fish-like heads, who can breathe in air via the employment of apparatus fitted to their faces that incorporates a canister of green liquid. They are intelligent, emotional creatures – one formed a friendship with Martha Jones, and saved her life at the cost of its own. They seem sentient and while they do not speak a language intelligible to humans, the two races planned to colonize the planet Messaline together. However, they later turned on each other – before their eventual reconciliation, thanks to the Doctor's intervention.
The Monster Files feature states that the Hath joined and assisted early human space colonisation.
The Hath returned for an appearance in the second part of The End of Time, where they are seen in an alien bar, and they are seen briefly in "The Eleventh Hour" in a clip illustrating the Doctor's role as protector of the Earth, suggesting that they have visited the planet at some point prior to 2010.

The Ood first appear as a slave race to humanity, performing menial tasks, and one person states in the episode that every human has an Ood servant, although it is not clear whether he is speaking literally or facetiously. In their debut story "The Impossible Planet", it is established that the Ood offer themselves for servitude willingly, having no goals of their own except to be given orders and to serve. It is also claimed that they cannot look after themselves, and if they do not receive orders, they pine away and die. However, mention is made, by a scientist working at an Ood factory, of a group called the "Friends of the Ood", also known as FOTO, who are apparently lobbying for Ood freedom.
According to the Official Doctor Who Annual 2007, the Ood live on a planet in the Horsehead Nebula where they were governed by a Hive Mind but it was destroyed by Human colonists. The monster book Creatures and Demons, published in 2007, elaborates that the Ood came from the "Ood Sphere", close to the "Sense Sphere" planet, home to the Sensorites, who share a similarity with the Ood, both mentally and physically. With no hive mind the Ood offered themselves to the Human colonists and became a slave race.
When encountered by the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler in "The Impossible Planet", a large number of Ood accompanied a human-led expeditionary force on the planet Krop Tor, orbiting a black hole. The empathic nature of the Ood seemed to make them susceptible to psychic possession by the Beast, who formed the Ood on the base into his "Legion". While possessed, the Ood killed two human security guards by throwing their translation spheres at them and using them to electrocute them to death.
The Ood were defeated when Danny Bartok, the expedition member in charge of them, broadcast a telepathic flare which reduced their field to "Basic Zero", creating a "brainstorm" which caused them to collapse. However, the telepathic field began to reassert itself after a time. When Krop Tor was sucked into the black hole, the Doctor was unable to save any of the Ood on the base who had been freed of the Beast's control, and all of them perished. The Ood were listed as having died with honors along with the rest of the base personnel killed.
On the return of the Ood in the 2008 episode "Planet of the Ood",[3] it was revealed that they are not born to serve but are an enslaved race, with the translation spheres actually replacing their hind brain which had contained their individual personalities. The Doctor aids and successfully frees the race by releasing the main Ood brain, which links all Ood with a telepathic link. Before this time, it had been sequestered from the Ood for 200 years by Ood Operations, the corporation that processed the Ood slaves. Over that time the brain adapted, allowing it to influence the Ood's actions. It made some Ood feral and vengeful while directing another to genetically re-engineer the head of the slave trading company into an Ood. Once the Hive brain was freed, the Oods' song could be heard throughout the Human Empire, by Ood and Human alike. After this, all Ood were freed and sent back to the planet of the Ood. As they parted from the Doctor, Ood Sigma prophesied that the Doctor's "song" was soon coming to an end.
Ood Sigma returns as part of the 2009–2010 specials in the episode "The Waters of Mars", where he appears after the Doctor's conversation with Adelaide Brooke. The Doctor then asks him whether this is his death, at which point the Ood disappears.[4] The Ood, including Ood Sigma appear in the subsequent, two-part story The End of Time. In this story, the Doctor discovers that the Ood's civilization has advanced rapidly, gaining the ability to see, and project themselves, through Time. The Ood reveal that this is a consequence of Time "bleeding", alluding to the events that were to follow in the Doctor's relative future which would threaten to destroy Time. At the end of Part Two, Ood Sigma appears again to the Doctor as he begins to succumb to the effects of radiation poisoning. He comforts the Doctor by telling him that "the Universe will sing you to your sleep" and that "this song is ending, but the story never ends". This helps the Doctor muster enough strength to make it to the TARDIS and set a course before he regenerates into the Eleventh Doctor.
A singular Ood referred to as "Nephew" appeared in the 2011 episode, "The Doctor's Wife", under the influence of an entity called House. It is killed when the Doctor and Idris land a makeshift TARDIS on it, atomizing it. After it dies the Doctor remarks, "Another Ood I failed to save", in reference to his previous encounters. Nephew's eyes glowed green as opposed to red.
A scene cut from A Good Man Goes to War would have seen the Doctor meeting up with Ood Sigma again. Russell T Davies is still credited at the end for the scene despite it being cut.

Therefore, in prepartion for the event of his second coming...well 11th I suppose...I will be endulging in some Dr. Who Marathoning. Granted BBC America had it's own, but I would rather have no commercials. Soooo, in keeping my public safe, I will not divuldge how I will be getting the said episodes. :-)

Sonic Screwdriver

The sonic screwdriver is tool in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who and its spinoffs. Its most common function is to operate virtually any lock, mechanical or electronic. It has also been used for repairing equipment. Like the TARDIS, it has become one of the icons of the program and is closely associated with the Doctor.

Some of the uses in the new series include: repairing electronic equipment; detecting, intercepting and sending signals; remotely operating the TARDIS; burning, cutting, or igniting substances; fusing metal; scanning and identifying substances; amplifying or augmenting sound; modifying mobile phones to enable "universal roaming”; disabling alien disguises. It is sometimes used to disassemble robotic enemies or turn other objects into weapons. In "The Long Game", "The Parting of the Ways" and "Utopia" it is used to operate the TARDIS controls remotely; when the Doctor attempts to counteract the Master's theft of the TARDIS, it is used to limit the TARDIS' destination. In "Doomsday", the Doctor states that the sonic screwdriver does not kill, wound or maim; however, it is sometimes brandished in a threatening manner, such as in "The Christmas Invasion", "The Runaway Bride", "The Lazarus Experiment", The Infinite Quest and The Impossible Planet. In "World War Three", when confronted by a group of Slitheen, the Doctor threatens to "triplicate the flammability" of a bottle of port wine with the sonic screwdriver, though one of the Slitheen realises he is bluffing.

The sonic screwdriver has been the subject of jokes: in "The Doctor Dances", Jack Harkness mocked the concept by asking, "Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, 'Ooh, this could be a little more sonic'?", and later exclaims to the Doctor that "in a pinch, you could put up some shelves!" In "Smith and Jones", Martha Jones asked if the Doctor also had a "Laser Spanner", to which he replied that he had, until it was stolen by Emmeline Pankhurst.

In "Smith and Jones", the sonic screwdriver burns out after the Doctor uses it to amplify the radiation output of a hospital X-ray machine. In the "Series Three concept Artwork Gallery", when referring to the burnt out sonic screwdriver, Peter McKinstry says "the green crystal structure visible under the shattered dome refers back to the TARDIS console crystal. It's the same technology - the TARDIS's little brother." Though initially saddened at the loss of the screwdriver, the Doctor obtains a new one at the conclusion of the episode.

In "The Eleventh Hour", the malfunctioning sonic screwdriver is destroyed when the Doctor tries to signal the Atraxi ships. The Doctor later receives a new one, which emerges from the newly-regenerated TARDIS console. The Eleventh Doctor's sonic screwdriver is larger than its predecessor; it has a green light and metal claws that extend with a flick of the wrist.

The tenth incarnation used another screwdriver after the X-ray incident. This model was damaged during the Doctor's tenth regeneration and the TARDIS' subsequent crash, as well as by Prisoner Zero and was ultimately destroyed when the Doctor used it to overload technology to alert the Atraxi. A TARDIS or TT Capsule was the main kind of space-time vehicle used by the Time Lords. "TARDIS" was an acronym Susan had "made up the name 'TARDIS' from the initials" of the full name, "Time And Relative Dimension In Space". (DW: An Unearthly Child). Susan Foreman (later Susan Campbell) was the grand daughter if the 1st incarnation of The Doctor.

In his first incarnation, the Doctor implied that he had built his TARDIS himself. (DW: The Chase) It was later revealed that he had stolen it, although this did not necessarily preclude the notion that he had somehow been responsible for its creation. (DW: The War Games, ST: The Exiles) Marnal was the Time Lord who previously owned the TARDIS. (EDA: The Gallifrey Chronicles)
The Doctor's TARDIS was referred to by the Time Lords as being a Type 40. By the time of the Doctor's fourth incarnation, all Type 40s had been officially decommissioned and replaced by newer, improved models. All models except the Doctor's had been accounted for. (DW: The Deadly Assassin)

The defining characteristic of the Doctor's TARDIS was that its chameleon circuit had broken after assuming the shape of a police box in 1963, London. Eventually, friends and enemies would be able to locate the TARDIS because it failed to change shape. The Daleks recognized the police box as the transport of their enemy (DW: Death to the Daleks), as would the Cybermen (DW: Earthshock) and the agent of the Black Guardian known as the Shadow. Entry to the Doctor's TARDIS was effected by inserting a key into the lock, just as would be expected from a real police box. However, the locking mechanism was anything but ordinary. It did not respond to police-issued keys, and indeed would not even open when unauthorized persons used the Doctor's keys. The Brigadier was prevented from opening the TARDIS in the Doctor's absence, because of the metabolism detector on the lock. Using the Architectural Configuration system, the Doctor was able to change and re-arrange the interior of his TARDIS with ease. (DW: Logopolis, Castrovalva, DWA: 2006 Doctor Who Annual) The Fifth Doctor also called this "change[ing] the desktop theme" (DW: Time Crash) There have been many variants of the Doctor's TARDIS main control room. They usually share common features such as a hexagonal control console, and a set of doors allowing access to the outside via the outer plasmic shell as well as to other rooms in the TARDIS and usually a scanner or some other means of observing the outside.

As TARDISes were intelligent, the Doctor's TARDIS had also developed a personality. It had been called "sentimental" (DW: Doctor Who (1996)) and "stupid" (by K-9) (DW: The Invasion of Time). Though intelligent, it was generally unable to communicate in words with the Doctor, relying on other methods of communication. (DW: The Edge of Destruction)

The TARDIS has also displayed a prejudicial fear of the time-locked Jack Harkness, probably relating in some way to its time travelling abilities, as the Doctor admits that due to his time related senses he finds it harder to look at Jack now. (DW: Utopia)

When the Doctor was attacked by Es'Cartress, the TARDIS tried to help him in the Matrix, taking the forms of his companions and helping him regain him memories. (IDW: The Forgotten)

Although the Doctor was reluctant to believe it possible, his TARDIS seems to have such a strong affinity for the Doctor that it would open and shut its doors when he snapped his fingers. The Tenth Doctor tested this ability after being informed of it by River Song, and was able to do so. Later, the Eleventh Doctor uses this ability when he takes Amy on as a companion to show off. Although this would seem to be a term of endearment (much like how Earth males refer to their cars as "she's"), certain spin-off media suggests that the TARDIS may actually be female. Monsters - The Smilers

Featured in the episode "The Beast Below," the Smilers are androids, mounted in booths all across the space faring version of Britain that left Earth in the 29th Century. They let people know what's good and what's bad. The terrified population keep them clean. Their heads can rotate to show three faces: happy, warning, or very dangerous indeed.

And if things get very dangerous, the Smilers can leave their booths and move around. They're actually androids, an extension of the 'starship's' security system.

There are also the Winders, the police force of Starship UK, who were actually cyborgs of half-human and half-Smiler. Their heads would rotate around to reveal the malevolent version of the Smiler face (though with a lighter skin tone, whiter teeth, flat nose and brighter eyes). The majority of the time they would wear dark hoods and act as normal Humans, keeping watch on the population. They were under oath to protect the system of Starship UK.

Monsters - Prisoner Zero

Prisoner Zero is one of an interdimensional multi-form species, who, having created a psychic link to a living but dormant creature, can then copy the appearance of that creature or of anything they dream about. Coma patients provide the perfect live feed: Prisoner Zero hides in the dreams of the living dead.

The being's natural form is gelatinous, a snakelike mass of glowing tendrils with a mouth full of sharp teeth. It's capable of creating a perception filter to stop itself being seen, or to hide anything it wants to hide.

These monsters are the Doctor's ultimate enemy. Their outer shell is battle armor, inside which lurks a hideous mutant from your worst nightmares. The race was genetically engineered to remove every single emotion - except hate. They despise all other living creatures and will exterminate without exception.

Daleks were mutated descendents of the Kaleds of the planet Skaro. They fought the Time Lords in the Last Great Time War, resulting in the almost total destruction of both races. Regarded by the Doctor as his greatest enemy, the Daleks were hated and feared throughout time and space.

Externally, Daleks resembled human-sized peppershakers, with a single mechanical eyestalk in a rotating dome, a gunstick and a manipulator arm. The casings were made of bonded polycarbide armor, a material that was also called dalekanium.
The voice of a Dalek was electronic, the Dalek creature having no vocal apparatus as such. Their most infamous statement was "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!", with each syllable individually screeched in a frantic electronic scream. Other common utterances included "I (or WE) OBEY!" to any command given by a superior.

The default directive of a Dalek was to destroy all non-Dalek lifeforms.
Daleks even regarded "deviant" Daleks as their enemies and worthy of destruction. The civil war between the Renegade and Imperial Daleks was a prime example of this, with each faction considering the other to be a perversion despite the relatively minor differences between them. This belief also meant that Daleks were intolerant of such "contamination" even within themselves. Once created, a new species of Daleks born from the Progenitor device immediately destroyed the inferior Daleks who were essential to their creation. The inferior Daleks accepted this wit no problem.

Monsters-Weeping Angels

Also known as the Lonely Assassins, these aliens could only attack their targets if you took your eyes off them. The moment anyone looks directly at them, they become immobile and powerless. But, turn away, even for a split second, and they send you back randomly into the past, feeding off the temporal energy that is left behind by your life no longer existing in your proper timeline.

The Weeping Angels were winged humanoids who evolved numerous unique survival mechanisms throughout their time, including the ability to move creatures back through time with a touch. This allowed them to consume the potential energy from the time the victims could have had alive had the Angels not transported the victim back in time.
The Doctor described them as being "the only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely", and apparently it was rare for them not to use this method of murder. The Weeping Angels evolved near the beginning of the universe, and were (as the Doctor put it) the kindest of killers and psychopaths since their method of killing was to let their victims "live to death". This perhaps make them the loneliest beings in existence as, due to their defence mechanism, they could not even look at each other. In that respect the Doctor appears to pity them.

Smith was revealed as the Eleventh Doctor in the British science-fiction television series Doctor Who in January 2009 to replace David Tennant, who announced his departure in October 2008. Smith was a relatively unknown actor compared to the actors then speculated about possibly taking on the role, who included Paterson Joseph, David Morrissey, Sean Pertwee, James Nesbitt, Russell Tovey, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Robert Carlyle and Billie Piper. Smith was first named as a possible successor less than a day before he was announced as the Eleventh Doctor, on 3 January 2009 edition of BBC Breakfast among the names speculated about. His obscurity prompted the news headline "Doctor Who?", a riff on the show's title.

Smith has said of his character: "The Doctor is excited and fascinated by the tiniest of things. By everything. By every single thing. That's what's wonderful about him as a character. It's why children like him, I think. Because he doesn't dismiss anything. He's not cynical. He's open to every single facet of the universe." In June 2010, Smith appeared on stage with Orbital, and performed with them a version of the Doctor Who theme, at the Glastonbury Festival. Smith hosted the Doctor Who Prom at the Royal Albert Hall on 24–25 July 2010. On the morning of 26 May 2012, Smith carried the Olympic torch in Cardiff, an activity which was noted by Doctor Who fans for its resemblance to a 2006 episode of the show in which the Doctor carried the torch. On 1 June 2013, the BBC announced that Smith would be leaving Doctor Who at the end of the 2013 Christmas special.Smith was one of the earliest actors to audition for the role, performing on the first day.

The production team, consisting of the incoming producer, Steven Moffat, and BBC Wales Head of Drama and executive producer,Piers Wenger, immediately singled him out based on his performance. Smith additionally auditioned for the role of John Watson in the Moffat-created Sherlock, undergoing auditions at the same time; he was unsuccessful, as Moffat believed his eccentric acting style was closer to Holmes, whose role had already been given to Benedict Cumberbatch. At 26 years old, Smith was three years younger than Peter Davison was at the time of his casting as the Doctor in 1981, and younger than any other actor suggested for the role. After three weeks of auditions, Moffat and Wenger agreed that it had "always been Matt" and approached him to accept the role. The BBC were cautious about casting him because they felt that a 26-year-old could not play the Doctor adequately; Wenger shared the same sentiment but thought Smith had proven his acting quality in Party Animals, which Wenger thought highlighted Smith's "mercurial qualities". Some fans of the show believed that Smith was inexperienced and too young for the role, while others supported him by citing his demonstrated acting ability.

For his performance in his first series he was nominated in the Outstanding Drama Performance Category of the National Television Awards. Smith is the first Doctor to be nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actor.

Tennant's name was put forward as a candidate for the role of the Ninth Doctor in 2004, although the role went to Christopher Eccleston. With Eccleston's announcement on 31 March 2005 that he would not be returning for a second series, the BBC confirmed Tennant as his replacement in a press release on 16 April 2005. He made his first, brief appearance as the Tenth Doctor in the episode "The Parting of the Ways" (2005) at the end of the regeneration scene, and also appeared in a special 7-minute mini-episode shown as part of the 2005 Children in Need appeal, broadcast on 18 November 2005. He began filming the new series of Doctor Who in late July 2005. His first full-length outing as the Doctor was a sixty-minute special, "The Christmas Invasion", first broadcast on Christmas Day 2005.

Tennant has expressed enthusiasm about fulfilling his childhood dream. He remarked to an interviewer for GWR FM, "Who wouldn't want to be the Doctor? I've even got my own TARDIS!" In 2006, readers of Doctor Who Magazine voted Tennant 'Best Doctor', over perennial favourite Tom Baker.[14] In 2007, Tennant's Doctor was voted the "coolest character" on UK television in a Radio Times survey.[15] When Tennant was cast as Eccleston's successor, he had wanted to use his native Scottish accent and become 'the first kilted Doctor' according to an interview in the Daily Star, but writer Russell T Davies did not want the Doctor's accent 'touring the regions', so he used "estuary" English instead.

Tennant had previously had a small role in the BBC's animated Doctor Who webcast Scream of the Shalka. Not originally cast in the production, Tennant happened to be recording a radio play in a neighbouring studio, and when he discovered what was being recorded next door managed to convince the director to give him a small role. This personal enthusiasm for the series had also been expressed by his participation in several audio plays based on the Doctor Who television series which had been produced by Big Finish Productions, although he did not play the Doctor in any of these productions. His first such role was in the Seventh Doctor audio Colditz, where he played a Nazi lieutenant guard at Colditz Castle. In 2004 Tennant played a lead role in the Big Finish audio play series Dalek Empire III. He played the part of Galanar, a young man who is given an assignment to discover the secrets of the Daleks. In 2005, he starred in UNIT: The Wasting for Big Finish, recreating his role of Brimmicombe-Wood from a Doctor Who Unbound play, Sympathy for the Devil. He also played an unnamed Time Lord in another Doctor Who Unbound play Exile. UNIT: The Wasting, was recorded between Tennant getting the role of the Doctor and it being announced. He also played the title role in Big Finish's adaptation of Bryan Talbot's The Adventures of Luther Arkwright (2005). In 2006, he recorded abridged audio books of The Stone Rose by Jacqueline Rayner, The Feast of the Drowned by Stephen Cole and The Resurrection Casket by Justin Richards, for BBC Worldwide. Tennant is close friends with actresses and former assistants Billie Piper and Catherine Tate.

He made his directorial debut directing the Doctor Who Confidential episode that accompanies Steven Moffat's episode "Blink", entitled "Do You Remember The First Time?", which aired on 9 June 2007. In 2007, Tennant's Tenth Doctor appeared with Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor in a Doctor Who special for Children in Need, written by Steven Moffat and entitled "Time Crash". This was the first "multi-Doctor" story in the series since The Two Doctors in 1985 (Not counting the 1993 special Dimensions in Time).[16] Tennant also later performed alongside Davison's daughter, Georgia Moffett, in the 2008 episode "The Doctor's Daughter" with her taking the titular role as Jenny.

Tennant also featured as the Doctor in an animated version of Doctor Who for Totally Doctor Who, The Infinite Quest, which aired on CBBC. He will also star as the Doctor in another animated six-part Doctor Who series, Dreamland.[17] Tennant guest-starred as the Doctor in a two-part story in Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, broadcast in October 2009.[18] Tennant continued to play the Tenth Doctor into the revived programme's fourth series in 2008. However, on 29 October 2008, Tennant announced that he would be stepping down from the role after three full series.[19] He played the Doctor in four special episodes in 2009, before his final episode aired on the 1st of January 2010.

The Daily Mirror reported that Tennant was forbidden from attending Doctor Who fan conventions while playing the role. This was done to avoid the chance that Tennant could accidentally let slip any plot points during filming of the series.[20] He said at the Children in Need concert that his favourite Doctor Who story is Genesis of the Daleks from the Tom Baker era, while another interview included him mentioning that his favourite classic monsters were the Zygons; although he never appeared in a television story with the Zygons, his Doctor confronted them in the novel Sting of the Zygons.

9th Doctor - Christopher Eccleston

On 20 March 2004, it was announced that Eccleston was to play the ninth incarnation of the Doctor in the revival of the legendary BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who, which began transmission on 26 March 2005. He was considered by many fans to be well suited to the role and praised for his ability to switch seamlessly between being humorous and playful to deadly serious.
On 30 March 2005, the BBC released a statement, ostensibly from Eccleston, saying that he had decided to leave the role after just one series, because he feared becoming typecast. On 4 April, the BBC revealed that Eccleston's "statement" was falsely attributed and released without his consent. The BBC admitted that they had broken an agreement made in January not to disclose publicly that he only intended to do one series. The statement had been made after journalists made queries to the press office.[8]
On 11 June 2005, during a BBC radio interview, when asked if he had enjoyed working on Doctor Who, Eccleston responded by saying, "Mixed, but that's a long story." Eccleston's reasons for leaving the role continue to be debated in Britain's newspapers: on 4 October 2005 Alan Davies told The Daily Telegraph that Eccleston had been "overworked" by the BBC, and had left the role because he was "exhausted".[9] Ten days later, Eccleston told The Daily Mirror this was not true, and expressed some irritation at Davies for his comments.[10]
On 7 November 2008, at the National Theatre to promote his book The Writer's Tale, Russell T Davies said that Eccleston's contract was for a single year because it was uncertain whether the show would continue beyond a single revival series. In retrospect, he says, it has been an enormous success, but at the time there were doubts within the BBC.
Eccleston was voted "Most Popular Actor" at the 2005 National Television Awards for his portrayal of the Doctor.
Eccleston was very touched by the response he received from children for his role as the Ninth Doctor. He said "In all the 20 years I've been acting, I've never enjoyed a response so much as the one I've had from children and I'm carrying that in my heart forever..."
