Final Exam Notes

The case for the final exam is about electronic medical records at the Mayo clinic. You can find it here. I recommend you read the case before starting the exam.

All final exams must be posted by 10pm next Wednesday.

You have four (4) hours to complete the exam from the time you download it from Blackboard until you post it back up in the Assignments area. When I give this exam in class most student complete it within two hours.

Please follow the instructions carefully.

Our final class meeting will consist of several events including:
1. Reviewing your final exams
2. Presentation of class awards (e.g., "Best Quiz Performance", "Best Team Presentation...")
3. Course evaluations
4. Dinner together. We may order pizza in, or just head out around 8pm to El Torito's or something. Preferences?

PS - Thank you to those of you who read the VW case for class last night. I appreciate your preparation. A special "thanks" to Keisha and Randa for bringing their "A" games to the case discussion.

Week 11 Participation and Week 12 Online Class Available

Several important announcements for this week...

The online participation component for this week's class has been posted. Please see the Discussion Forum for "Week 11's Online Discussion" to complete the participation requirement for class this week.

In order to make it easier for me to grade, I've assigned your participation grades from last night -25% (e.g., if you performed 100% last night, your grade today says "75%"). On Monday I will tabulate the participation in the online participation and everyone who successfully completed the online discussion will receive an additional 25% to their current score (even if your current score is 0%).

There is no class meeting next week. Instead, we are meeting virtually to discuss the ethics of malware and web advertising. Please see the "Course Documents" area (link below) for instructions to complete Week 12's class.

Your team presentations are due Week 13. Be sure to follow the instructions for the content very carefully. Devote most of your time to the analysis of the implementation, not telling me about the technology.

I will be available over the next two weeks to answer any questions you have about the projects or the online module. Please, don't hesitate to ask. Email is usually the best way to contact me, but remember I don't check email after about 5pm on Friday until Monday morning (and this semester I have class from 8-12 on Monday).

Announcements for 3/14 Class

I know I said I would post "The Four F's" in Blackboard, but I've had some technical issues that have prevented me from recording the PowerPoint presentation in Camtasia. So, I'll cover "The Four F's" tonight in class.

Don't forget...we switched this week's class with Week 13...so the reading for tonight are Chapter 12 and the Mt. Auburn case. We'll do IT Governance in Week 13.

Don't forget to read the Mt. Auburn case for class tonight. Participation scores will be severely affected by a lack of preparation for this discussion. To help you prepare for the discussion, consider the following questions

Why are there so many errors in hospitals where safety and human health are (or at least should be) the most important things?

How can IT help reduce ADEs? What kinds of ADEs, if any, can IT not help with?

How would you recommend they roll out the system at Mt. Auburn? A phased implementation with L&D then elsewhere, or a Big Bang implementation? Why?

Would you force all physicians to use the system, or maintain both the POE and the old way of doing things? How would you motivate physicians to use the system?

What other reasons are motivating Mt. Auburn to implement POE (remember the Four F's...faith, facts, fear, and following..

How large of an impact do you think the POE will have on the ADEs at Mt. Auburn?

Midterm Announcements

Thanks to those who came to class last night. I gave everyone who stayed the entire time a 95% for participation, except Keisha...who received 100% since she also read the case. Please read the cases before class when one is assigned.

No class meeting next week.

The midterm is available (see link below) now. You have until 10pm next Wednesday to complete it. You are limited to three hours from the time you open it to when you must submit it.

You may use two pages of notes with your midterm (front and back of two pages). However, you must submit your notes pages as well as your midterm.

Please follow the directions carefully!

Instructions for Week Five's Class

The instructions to complete the online class dealing with information stewardship are ready. I expect this project will take between 3 and 4 hours to complete. It includes reading a couple of introductory articles about information ethics/stewahttp://www2.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifrdship, taking a few surveys, and participating in an online simulation. To begin the online experience, please browse to the "Course Documents" area of Blackboard. Instructions are posted there and you will need to also use the "Discussion Board" to complete the assignment.

You have until Monday, February 5th to complete this entire assignment. You may do it at year own leisure. There are several steps that can be completed as you have time. The Celltroniks simulation will require about one-hour and you can not pause it and return to it. So be sure to allocate enough time to complete it before beginning.

How to find a web server

Dedicate a bit of your personal server
Do some research and discover how to post HTML pages to Blackboard
Use a free web server (e.g., http://www.geocities.com; http://www.freeservers.com )

How to create your web resource

First, focus on the content. Make sure you have everything the syllabus specifies.
Then, there are many tools you can use including MS Word, MS Publisher, MS Expression Web, and many others (check Download.com ).
Depending on the web server you chose, your publishing routine will vary.

REMEMBER...

Your web resource should be a one-stop introduction to the technology, vendors, products, reviews, implementation examples, and business benefits of your chosen technology. Be thorough!
You must add your own original analysis and prose. This is NOT just a list of links and copied information. In your own words you need to write material such as (but not limited to)...

What is the business problem this technology solves?
What firms find this technology useful?
What are the challenges that this technology introduces?
If one were to implement this technology, what issues do they need to be aware of?
How would you compare the vendors of this technology?
What are the important product attributes?

Focus on substance, not style!

I received the following email today and wanted to let you know about it...

Michael,

Good to see you again last night. Thanks for allowing your class to join the new BSM students from Dr. Steve Sommer's class for a short period of time for networking and food on January 17th from 7:30 pm-8:15 pm in room 233-234. Please let your students know next week so they will not need to buy food on January 17th. Since our students do not always have the time to meet others at the center, this has been a nice way for the new ones to meet some of the older students.

Problems with the Coursepack

Greetings and Happy New Year! While I'm hopeful we'll enjoy a wonderful 2007, 2006 ended poorly for all of you trying to get your BSM 490 course packs in time for class tomorrow. Sorry about that!

The good news is that I've spoken with Robert in the bookstore and he assures me that after 1pm today they will be available at the Orange County Bookstore for purchase in time for class tomorrow. However, there is no need to make a special trip to pick it up today. We won't be using the cases in the course pack until Week 3.

There will be a quiz covering chapters 1 &2 from the Oz textbook.

Hello and welcome to the BSM Blog for our class together this spring. I know it's a few weeks until we begin class, but I'd like to point out a few things before we begin.

Please check the Blackboard space (or here) for announcements regularly. Anytime there is a change, announcement, or informaiton it will be posted here ASAP.

There is a new syllabus available online. I had to make a few schedule changes so please add it to your calendar.

If you are a blogger or podcaster please add this site to your blog reader (I use Google's Reader) and podder (I use iTunes + Real).

Prior to 12/29, please complete a Student Information Card avialable under the "Assignments" area of Bb. I use this info to assign teams for the semester.

There will be a quiz on the first week of class, so be sure to get the textbook and read your chapters before then.
