The Hate U Give

This week we cover The Hate U Give, based on the novel of the same name.
In this story, Starr is in the midst of finding balance in her life when her friend is killed in front of her by a police officer who mistook a brush for a weapon during a traffic stop. She has to find her voice and learn how to use it to contribute to change her community desperately needs.
While keeping lines clear between right and wrong, issues of race and police tactics are addressed. At a time when tough conversations are being had, this is a excellent film to watch with someone you care about and discuss afterwards. Which we did.
Stories are a great way to find empathy for people different from yourself and situations you haven't experienced. Netflix has cultivated more titles along this vein, not all of which address these issues specifically. They do, however, allow the viewer to change the lens with which they see the world in the hopes we can all learn something and apply those concepts in our daily lives. This week we take on a modern musical based on the stage classic.
Told in flashbacks, boy meets girl, girl mistakes boy for rich duke, chaos ensues.
Christian is a small town boy (read: spoiled little rich boy on a rebel quest to slum it for a sec) who has a penchant for poetry and futuristic songs. When his loud-ass upstairs neighbors are put in a pinch, they turn to a complete stranger for help.
Satine is a tawdry performer who is looking to go legit, and her "only" option is getting a nasty-ass duke to invest for Moulin Rouge to become a real theater with real plays. But when Christian and Satine fall in love, the deal is put in limbo, death threats are made, and drama is stirred.

This week we tackled a Netflix Original. What Happened to Monday?
And what had happened was...
A dystopian future in which the world is wildly overpopulated and we cannot sustain ourselves. In the process of altering crops to feed everyone, an unforeseen complication arose in multiple offspring. So a one child policy is enacted globally.
It is in this world our heroines find themselves. Meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Don't worry. You only need to remember, like, three of them.
Their mother illegally had them and died in the process, leaving their grandfather to raise them in secret. He gains an identity for the identical septuplets to share, each taking on the persona one day a week. You can guess who gets what day.
And the system works. Until Monday doesn't come home. And then shit gets real.
This movie had all the ingredients to kick major ass, and yet...

We have a special guest in Sonya who brings her unique views on the film. Together we watch as Lizzie and Darcy meet, spar, meet again, mildly flirt, and finally admit that first impressions can be very wrong.

It’s one of Sarah’s favorite stories and because she loves her so much, Vickie finally decided to watch it.

It’s a fun-filled episode that celebrates giving people a second chance and the value in being able to admit you’re wrong.

This week we arrive to COMDEX! If you recall, Gordon was there a few years ago. He's the expert.
It's off to a rocky start when our heros lose both their booth space and their room. Lucky for all, Gordon and Joe work together to con poor nerd bros out of theirs.
We learn that Donna's rockin' bod wasn't the only thing that caught Hunt's eyes. Joe is faced with a moral dilemma and we get to see Camerin's marketing skills in action.
All in all, it is an excellent penultimate episode that applies incredible pressure to all of our major players. How will this impact their uncertain futures? We'll see next week.
