Below are some illustrations commissioned recently by The American Prospect.

Prospects for The American Prospect, a great magazine for politics and art, are looking dark. Now is the time for all good artists to come to the aid of their industry. This magazine weds journalism and illustration especially well because of its brilliant art director Mary Parsons. Many of us have worked with her at the Prospect as well as previously at The Atlantic and elsewhere. She understands...

Couple of months ago I've been approached by a french company to see if I would be interested to work on a wall paper for children.

The idea was to build a collection of classical type of wall papers, pretty much inspired by toile de jouy, (or toile), each of them would have a classical book as main theme, and illustrated by different artists; the kind of wallpaper you'd put only on one wall only.

Here are a few recent projects for New Orleans Magazine and The New Crisis Magazine. I'm very fortunate to have these clients as I've said before. At any rate, the deadlines are tight and the budgets are small but I just love to work for them as it allows me to feel a deep cultural connection to the African American spirit through meaningful content and appreciative art direction.

For nine weeks this spring, I contributed a picture or two every week to a French publication entitled 9 Semaines Avant L’Election. The subject was politics and each issue had a theme.

The themes were not the basic talking points that usually fuel election rhetoric, drive campaign organizations and serve as platforms for politicians to promise things they know they can never deliver.

Instead they were the great backdrop issues against which a nation’s electoral...

Last week Joe Heroun of The New Republic emailed, and asking if I was up for a cover assignment. Working with Joe has been a great pleasure of mine. He requested a vector execution of subject matter that I've traditionally handled with oils. That subject being the worker, or blue collar person. Strangely I've not done too many blue collars on workers, hmmm…. Well, anyhow, I've enjoyed Joe's direction in past as it's gotten me delving into thoughts(visual ideas)...

I always get an adrenaline rush receiving an assignment from Rolling Stone.
The deadline is often short, the story's seldom available, but the creative team at RS are always amiable and helpful to work with. When I get it right I'm on a creative high, when I get it wrong, I kick myself mercilessly for weeks on end. But I'm learning to take that in stride, because the failures are part of what drives me to reach higher. They say you learn more from your mistakes than from your...

I've been thinking about weeds a lot this Spring. All winter as a matter of fact. Back in September, I dug up clods of dandelions, grass and plantain and kept them in my studio. One sunny autumn day, the dandelions blossomed and went to seed. And now with Spring all around us, I'm intoxicated by the greenness of it all. I love weeds. All this weed-love is part and parcel of the picture book I'm working on now for Schwartz & Wade*.

Not exactly the transmutation of a species but somewhere in the fabric of this post must lay an excuse to allude to an ism. I’ve recently been working on a series of natural history prints for children. Before dragging themselves to

I walked into a dark room and waited for the light to form outlines around the objects in the room. I was thinking that if I sat there long enough that my eyes would adjust and I could make out faint lines around the objects in the room. I waited and waited there but no colors appeared instead just black, only back…

Thanks to the recent outstanding success of Brazil's "Samba" economy, I was tapped to do a cover for Internazionale "treating the word "Brasil" like the logo of a multivitamin/Gatorade/exotic fruit juice.
