Bipolar Disorder

     My name is Kristi and I'm a twenty-one year old living with bipolar disorder. Before I was diagnosed, I thought that there was no one else in the world going through what I was going through. I had never heard of manic depression or bipolar disorder. When I was fifteen, I suffered extreme bouts of anger, getting extremely violent towards my friends and family and sometimes even towards myself. I would wake up some mornings, hell bent and on a war path for no apparent reason, genuinely feeling like the entire world owed me something. I made miserable the lives of my parents and younger brother, treating them in a way that no loving family should ever be treated. When I wasn't manic or psychotic, I was extremely depressed. I would lay in my room with a blanket nailed over the window, wearing the same clothes for days on end, not eating and feeling completely disconnected from the world. I was hopeless and pathetic.

     I began to experiment with drugs, as many people with bipolar disorder tend to do. I grew quite fond of cocaine, doing it almost the entire day everyday. I loved the false sense of contentment that it gave me while I was high, but when I would come down off it, I would experience the worst psychotic episodes of my life. I literally wanted to die.
     Once my family began to realize that their daughter was going through something much more serious than teen rebellion, they had me see a psychiatrist. Sure enough, the doctor prescribed me medications for bipolar disorder (a mood stabilizer, an anti-psychotic, and an anti-depressant). The meds made me feel very withdrawn and zombie-like. I began refusing them and after a violent manic episode, was hospitalized. This went on for about a year, getting in and out of the psych ward and getting on and off different kinds of medications. Nothing worked for me. I began to lose hope for a normal life.

     One night, over at a friends' house, a blunt was passed to me. I didn't think twice about it and hit it. Within a few moments, a sense of peace and well-being spread through my body and mind that I had not felt for years. The feeling of comfort was so intense that it almost had me in tears. I knew I had found a way to live a normal life.

     The next time I saw my psychiatrist, I told her that I had began smoking marijuana to alleviate my symptoms and that it had been working like a charm. I told her that I felt like myself again for the first time in years. I was ecstatic. She, on the other hand, was not too thrilled. She told me that marijuana was a harmful drug and that I only thought it was helping me because my judgment was clouded (literally). That was when I began to do my own research and take my disorder into my own hands.

     That was all about six years ago, and since then I've tried over ten more medications to get my disorder under control with no avail. I haven't taken any meds for about a year and a half now and have been smoking about a gram or so of marijuana a day. I am so proud and happy to say that I almost never experience any symptoms of my disorder. I am a happy, energetic, friendly, motivated young woman. I'm almost finished with college and I have a wonderful relationship with my family. Without marijuana, I would not be where I am today. I feel truly blessed. Marijuana literally saved my life.

Cannabis Hard Candy and Lollipops

Description:

Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup water
1-2 ounces marijuana tincture
Candy or Lollipop molds
Your choice of food coloring and flavoring

Instructions:
1. Add sugar, syrup, and water to a pot on the stove over medium-heat. Stir until all ingredients have dissolved and bring to a boil.
2. Bring to 300 degrees (F) and slowly stir in color and flavorings.
3. Turn off heat and as quickly as possible stir in marijuana tincture.

4. Pour into candy or lollipop molds.

So put on your cooking aprons and get ready for some baking a la cannabis!
Before we start baking, however, you will need to make pot butter. Pot brownies contain THC by virtue of the butter that is used in their making. Since THC is fat-soluble and, well, butter contains a lot of fat, butter is the ideal candidate to absorb and retain large amounts of THC. Thus, when making pot butter, the goal is to extract the THC from the weed and have it absorbed by the butter. As you’ll see, there’s no need to keep the actual pot leaves.
Making Quick & Easy Pot Butter
Ingredients
Two saucepans
Strainer
1/8 oz. weed (The weed doesn’t have to be ground. You will later be straining the weed, anyways.)
1 stick of butter (1/2 cup)
Directions
- Melt the butter on low heat in the saucepan.
- Once the butter has melted, add the weed.
- Let the butter simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. – This is the step when
the THC is extracted from the weed and absorbed by the butter.
- Strain the pot butter into the second saucepan.
- Refrigerate pot butter until semi-solid.
Recipe #1: Grandma’s Classic Brownies
Sometimes, there’s nothing better than the good old-fashioned brownies that grandma used to make. Follow the easy-to-follow recipe below to make yourself a batch in no time!
Ingredients
4 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
3/4 cup pot butter
2 cups white sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose fl our
1 cup chopped walnuts
Directions
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
• Microwave chocolate and pot butter in large bowl on
high for 2 minutes or until butter is melted.
• Stir until chocolate is melted. Stir in sugar. Mix in eggs
and vanilla. Stir in flour and nuts.
• Spread in greased 13 x 9 inch pan.
• Bake for 35 minutes.

Michigan Medical Marijuana Patients hit another ROADBLOCK

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Users of medical marijuana cannot legally drive if they have any amount of the drug in their systems, the state Court of Appeals said in a ruling issued this morning.

The appellate court said the state’s “zero tolerance” law, which prevents motorists from operating a vehicle with any amount of a Schedule 1 controlled substance in their body, still applies for drivers who legally use medical marijuana.

The ruling came in a Grand Traverse County case in which Prosecutor Alan Schneider charged Rodney Koon with driving under the influence.A circuit judge upheld a district judge’s ruling that jurors in Koon’s trial would not be told that any presence of marijuana in Koon’s system would be enough to convict.
The circuit judge ruled that the medical marijuana law superseded the zero-tolerance law.Schneider also disagreed with the judges’ rulings that, under the medical marijuana law, he had to prove the driver was under the influence of the drug. State law prohibits any amount of marijuana in a motorist’s body.
According to the ruling, police stopped Koon for driving 83 mph in a 55-mph zone. Koon admitted to drinking one beer after an officer detected intoxicants, and admitted he used marijuana five or six hours earlier. He told the officer he had a medical marijuana card.A blood test showed he had active THC in his system.
The appeals panel – David Sawyer, Peter O’Connell and Amy Ronayne Krause – said the medical marijuana law recognized circumstances where medical marijuana use would be not permitted.
“One of those exceptions specifically states that the protections will not apply to operating a motor vehicle under the influence of marijuana. … This is certainly not an irrational provision.
For example, it is not uncommon for a medication, whether prescription or over the counter, to be accompanied by a warning not to drive while using the medication.”
The problem is, the medical marijuana law doesn’t define “under the influence of marijuana,” the justices wrote.
“What we are left with is the (medical marijuana law), which affords a certain degree of immunity from prosecution for possession or use of marijuana for a medical purpose, and the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code, which prohibits operating a motor vehicle while there is any amount of marijuana in the driver’s system.”
It said the medical marijuana law, or legislators, could have rescheduled marijuana from a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
The court said that the medical marijuana law didn’t create a right to use marijuana, but provided protection from prosecution for possessing an illegal drug.
Koon contended that he had the “right” to “internally possess” marijuana, and, if he didn’t break any laws, could go about his “day-to-day activities, including operating a vehicle.

The medical marijuana law was supported by 63 percent of voters in 2008.

The justices called the medical marijuana law an “in-artfully drafted act.”

Connecticut Will Be 17th State To Legalize Medical Marijuana

After a raucous debate last night that lasted longer than anticipated, the Connecticut senate passed a medical cannabis bill approved by the House earlier in the session that will now head to Governor Dannel Malloy’s willing pen for signature.
With Connecticut passing a medical cannabis bill, approximately one third of the US population now resides in a state that has decided to act in favor of it’s citizens’ will, as compared to the remarkably recalcitrant federal government, which, moronically, still insists cannabis is a dangerous ‘narcotic’ and has no accepted medical value what so ever.
Congratulations to Connecticut NORML and it’s coordinator Erik Williams for leading the charge to write and pass this important and affirming legislation (Erik and company had previously worked the legislature hard in 2011 to pass cannabis decriminalization laws)!
"Today is a day of hope, compassion and dignity and I thank all of the legislators who worked hard on this legislation and who voted to pass this bill," said Erik Williams, Executive Director of Connecticut NORML. "I am so happy for all the patients who will have another medicinal option to discuss with their doctor and for all of those currently suffering with debilitating conditions who will no longer suffer the indignity of being sick and a criminal."
The statewide efforts of Connecticut NORML resulted in tens of thousands of phone calls, emails, patient and legislator meetings, and letters to legislators. "Patients and doctors told their stories and asked legislators to tell them ‘No, you haven’t suffered enough,’" said Williams. "Many others stressed that this bill did medical marijuana the correct way and that Connecticut had an opportunity to be a leader in America on this issue. Our strategy and dedication has obviously paid off."
Connecticut’s bill creates guidelines and regulations for cultivation centers and dispensaries.
