Q? Is it true that you shouldn't wash or shampoo brand new dreadlocks?

One of the possible dilemmas that someone whose just had their dreadlocks made, is the question: To Wash... or Not To Wash... A very good question indeed. And on the face of it, you might think that washing brand new dreads would be a definite no no... and for some people they hold this as true.

But... the truth is, it is perfectly okay to wash your new dreads after they have been done, and it is more than okay to do so. You can wait a few days to do it, or even leave it a week before you shampoo them if you have any concerns, but the washing of recently made dreadlocks is definitely not a problem.

This question also falls into the same category of thought that people without dreads, and not in the dreadhead community, have as a misconception about people with dreads. And that is one of cleanliness and hygiene. People without their hair in locs commonly basically assume that dreadies can't possibly wash their dreads, and therefore don't wash their dreads.

And to look at dreads, one might initially think the same thing, asking "Q? How on earth can you wash them?" This is a huge assumption! And one of total and utter complete ignorance. The care of both your hair, and your scalp, does not, and should not stop after you have had your dreads done.

It's very likely that before you had your dreads done, you were washing your hair and your head on a weekly or more regular basis, and you were probably doing this for a very good reason... to keep your hair and head clean and in good condition. This is still just as vital and important after getting your dreads done, as it was before.

Having your hair dreaded doesn't change the fact that your head and scalp continue to produce oils, and that the environment continues to contaminate your hair and scalp. Hair and head hygiene doesn't stop... just 'cos you have had dreads done and became a dreadhead. An ongoing hair care and scalp routine is important... particularly if you don't want to be thought of, or accused of having smelly dreads.

And perhaps part of this myth that you cannot wash dreads, springs from the unfounded idea that if you wash your dreads, they will be totally ruined and destroyed. Again this comes from a place of ignorance, and unknowing. They think that doing that will completely trash and destroy all of the hard work, time, effort and money that you have put into having your dreads, done... and therefore a complete waste of money. But this isn't the case at all!

One of the values that dreadheads and people of a similar lifestyle have, is the consideration of the environment, and the impact and consequences of their choices and actions upon the environment, and how they might do so, in an environmentally friendly way, so as to now add to the continual contamination, pollution, and destruction of our planet... the only one we have.

Some people choose to wash their dreads in just water, and not use any products or topical treatments on their hair, and that is perfectly fine. But if you do decide that just water isn't quite enough for you, then choosing a shampoo and conditioner to wash your dreadlocks in, is your next step.

And to fit in with your environmentally friendly beliefs and values, when it comes to rinsing any shampoo and conditioner out of your dreads, and the resulting soaps suds being washed down the the sink or bath plug hole... Natural Organic hair shampoo and conditioners are the way to go.

We highly recommend that you continue to wash your hair, as frequently as you used to before you had your dreadlocks done. Your scalp has adjusted to your routine of washing, and a change in that will confuse your scalp and its production of skin oil.

A lot of washing might cause loose hair or more maintenance on your locks, but over all, it's best to stick to your normal washing routine. We do recommend that you use a clean, organic shampoo, without perfume.

And for this we highly recommend: RAW ROOTs or Dreadz Shampoo Bars or Dreadz Liquid shampoos... you choose:

The most annoying question for Dreadheads "Do you wash your locks?"

Probably one of the most annoying questions a person without dreadlocks can ask a person with dreads is... "Do you wash your locks?"

You've probably had someone ask you that right? Or you've heard a friend being asked that question. Most dreadheads are usually very easy going, and just laugh it off and pay it no attention... but for some it can be quite a rude thing to be asked.

There seems to be a some unfounded myth in the general population that because you have a very different hairstyle to most - Dreadlocks are one way that Rastafarians distinguish themselves from non-Rastas - the immediate thought is that you take absolutely no care over your hair and your head whatsoever, and just leave your locs to their own devices.

But in this day and age... keeping your dreads and your scalp clean and fresh is not only a must, but it's also really easy, especially with the range of different cleansing products available for you today.

And because people with dreadlocks are commonly very environmentally friendly, choosing a soap or shampoo to wash both your dreads and your scalp with that meets those environmental needs, is also one of the major issues for choosing such a product.

Everybody is different, and everybody prefers their own way of cleaning their hair and scalp. Some like liquid dread shampoos, and others prefer the good old fashioned way of scrubbing... with an in-your-hand... good old scrub... dreadlock shampoo bar!

And we have the ideal shampoo bars for you! RAW ROOTs is rapidly becoming a very popular range of natural organic dreadlock products, providing you with very effective shampooing and cleansing of your hair and scalp, while being kind not only to you, but the environment too.

The RAW ROOTs Dreadlock Soap Shampoo Bars come in 3 lovely flavours:

Greenie Genie - Organic plant extracts strengthens hair and scalp and helps active against dandruff and other scalp problems.

Muddy Luxury - Contains organic essential oils of Geranium, Rosemary and patchouli that helps to stimulate the scalp, acting anti-inflammatory and stimulates hair growth.

Simply Calm - Based on organic extracts of Chamomile, Calendula and lavender in saponified coconut, olive and avocado oil.

These dread shampoo bars cleanse and nourish your scalp and dreadlocks, with green organic ingredients.

Each shampoo bar corresponds to approximately 500-600 ml liquid shampoo.. so there's plenty there to go around, and should last you for a good while yet, depending upon the length of your dreads, and whether a good friend likes it so much they borrow it, and don't give it back until there's a tiny amount left.

Try a RAW ROOTs shampoo bar on your dreadlocks now... you'll love the way it cleans your dreads and refreshes your scalp.

If you're fed up with those uncontrollable loose hairs in your dreads? Here's how to tighten up your dreadlocks.

Directions:

Start by finding the loose hair you want to work on.

Add Lock Powder and rub the hair in circular movements until the hair tangles into a hairball.

Now you are ready to work the hairball into the dreadlock. We prefer a crochet latch hook.

We always start with a little bigger crochet latch hook 0.7-1.0mm. to get more hair into the dreadlock, and save time.

Carefully work in the loose hair to the dreadlock from all angles.

When the loose hair is inside the dreadlock, we begin to tighten the dreadlock with a smaller crochet latch hook size 0.5-0.75mm.

MIND YOUR FINGERS!

Continue with the crochet latch hook until you feel the dreadlock is as tight and smooth as you like.

Finish off by rolling the dreadlock so the new knots will settle inside the dreadlock. You can use Tightening Gel while rolling which will give a firm hold.

Now it's your turn! :O)

If your dreadlocks have started to get a bit smelly and stink like a damp dog, or they're starting to show signs of white gross stuff in them... it could be mould or mildew... it could be DREAD ROT!

If you find that your dreadlocks have started smell a bit mouldy, a smelly locker room gym bag, or even stink like a damp wet dog, it's quite likely you have mouldy dreads... affectionately known as 'dread rot'. It might only be noticeable after you've washed your dreads, but any mildew or mould type smell you can sense, is likely to be mould in your dreads.

If you haven't been doing so before, from now on, make sure that you are using a residue-free shampoo to clean your dreads. Washing your dreadlocks in a residue-free shampoo will help them to mature faster than a regular shampoo, it will help them dry more quickly and make sure that any new growth will continue to lock up.

** We recommend Raw Roots dreadlock shampoo (liquid or bars)

If you have your hair currently loc'd right up... make sure that you thoroughly shampoo your dreads, rinse them, and fully dry your locks each time you wash them. If you use no shampoo whatsoever, and you don't allow your wet locs to dry completely, this can cause problems with mould and mildew growth.

After washing your hair, make sure you finish up with a good old Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse. Apple Cider Vinegar has so many amazing uses; cleaning and refreshing dreadlocks is just one of them! They’re usually done at room temperature, to seal cuticles and maintain a beautiful, natural shine. The hidden benefit of this is if you have colour treated hair, there is less colour run off and a more vibrant colour for longer. Awesome!

** We recommend Raw Roots Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

People often wonder whether the smell of the Apple Cider Vinegar will hang around and linger, but the there's no need to worry, the vinegary smell will fade away as your hair dries.

Use a shower cap when showering but NOT washing hair. This prevents your dreads from locking in moisture that can lead to mould.

NEVER apply Wax to wet hair. This will trap moisture inside, this can create mould.

Finally... finish up by thoroughly drying your dreadlocks by giving them a really good airing... ideally with a hair dryer, going from the roots of your hair up to the tips of your locs. It is perfectly fine to palm roll your dreadlocks while they are wet as this can help compress them. If your dreads aren't completely dry, whatever you do.. don't style them, or go to bed. If the hair is damp for too long, it may start to smell or could even grow mould.

Say Hello to Happy Hair! A New 500ml Size Ultimate Hair Detangler

Introducing the new 500ml size Knotty Boy Ultimate Hair Detangler...

Knotty Boy Ultimate Hair Detangler removes the MOST dreadful tangles and knots, easily and all naturally, and smooths and restores rough split ends and damaged follicles to lustrous, shiny health.

This slippery, mild, tropical-scented formula is excellent for use on children for gentle detangling, light curl definition and wash-out or leave-in control.

Directions... It's easy to use, just wet your hair, and work small amounts of Knotty Boy Ultimate Detangler directly into tangled areas, gently separating and picking out knots with fingers or plastic comb from end of hair to root. Leave Detangler on hair for 5-10 minutes for increased benefit and repair, then rinse and repeat as needed.

Here's what just a few customers say about Knotty Boy Every Body Ultimate Hair Detangler...

"Brilliant for getting knots out of kinky, African hair. Right after my second child was born, I was so pressed for time that detangling my curls on a regular basis was a pipe dream. After a few weeks had passed, a bunch of tiny, corkscrew curls above the nape of my neck had begun to knot and dread up quite nicely, much to my horror. After a liberal dollop of this detangler to the area, some time on the couch in front of the t.v., and a lot of patience with a fine-toothed comb, this stuff gave my hair enough 'slip' to work those knots right out. Keeping this stuff on hand allows me to not panic during rough patches when I only have time for half-hearted finger detangling of my curls." ~ Dutch

"So far,so good.My hair tangles a lot once shampooed so this definitely helps.Smells very clean and soft.I am pleased it's worked for me." ~ Tazlin

"Pros- smell great, Soften hair, Curly poping, Hydrating, Good for cowashing. Cons- please can you make a bigger bottles 1 litre or 500ml would be great." ~ Anon
[ the 1 litre hair detangler can be found here ]

"Quite good at detangling afro hair but the bottle is quite small and I find that I have to use quite a lot to get through my 4C hair. Although it has a lovely coconut fragrance which I enjoyed." ~ Jadie

"for West Indian hair this this so helpful. I love it and highly recommend this for natural afro-caribbean hair. A little goes a long way." ~ Jupiter

"I used Knotty Boy Ultimate Detangler to take down my hair after my wedding, and wow! that stuff really works. Within 2 minutes of applying it to my damp hair I could run my fingers through my hair. The last time I had a formal up-do it took me several attempts with shampoo and conditioner to get out the sticky hairspray and resulting knots. Thanks so much! My hair felt back to its normal healthy state right away." ~ Rhoda K

"We opened up our new bottle of Knotty Boy Ultimate Detangler just a couple days ago and gave it a sniff... so yummy! My girls wanted to take a bath right away to try it out! Having three little girls with long hair can be such a chore, but using this detangler seemed to give them softer, smoother, less "knotty" hair and they all love the smell. I also feel great about the fact that I am using such a natural, environmentally friendly product on my kids... so much better for them and better for our world! Thanks again!" ~ Lisa K

"We use the Detangler as a leave-in Conditioner as it defines the curls and acts as an anti-frizz for my daughter's Afro hair type. The Detangler also allows us tear-free combing through her wet hair without tangles, and I also use it on my son's Afro locks if and when they are looking dry - it is a great moisturizer!" ~ Jessica D

"On a recent trip it was the only hair care product I packed, and simply used it on both of us as a co-wash and leave-in with fantastic results. Knotty Boy Every Body Ultimate Detangler earns two thumbs up and a spot on our "almond oil free" product shelf! Oh, and after reading all about Knotty Boy and their other products, I am seriously considering dreads when TD is older. They really take the fear out of dreads. If you have ever considered dreads, go check them out." ~ Shelley

How to Care For New Back-Combed Dreadlocks...

One method of starting new dreadlocks is back-combing and palm rolling. A stylist parts your hair into small sections, rats each section by combing the hair upward with a fine-toothed comb, and rolls the ratted hair between her palms. Some stylists apply dread wax to new locs, some apply aloe-vera gel and some use nothing. Whatever method your stylist recommends, you'll have to maintain your new dreadlocks at home by back-combing and rolling the sections again after every wash.

Instructions:
Wash your locks with dreadlock shampoo (Knotty Boy Liquid Shampoo or Knotty Boy Shampoo Bar - available @ dreadz.co.uk) once or twice a week. Keeping new dreads very clean helps keep oil from building up in your hair, which dries the hair somewhat and prepares it for back-combing.

Treat your dreadlocks from the mid-point down with Knotty Boy (available @ dreadz.co.uk) Locksteady Gel (dilute with water to make a spritz if preferred) - its purpose is to tighten and harden your hair. Wrap your dreads in a micro-fiber towel to absorb the excess water, and sit under a hood dryer or allow them to air dry. They should be completely dry before you start back-combing.

Back-comb each dread with a fine-toothed comb (available @ dreadz.co.uk) after your hair is dry. Hold the ends of the dread and run the comb toward your roots, making lots of short strokes to push the hair up. Each dread should have a puffy ball of teased hair at the end.

Apply just enough Gel or Wax to your hands to palm roll one dreadlock. Rub your palms together to warm them. Roll each dread back and forth vigorously between your palms, working from the roots to the ends. The puffs of hair at the end of each dread will flatten with rolling.

Cover your hair with a head scarf or bandana to keep them flat and out of your face. The scarf helps compress and protect baby dreadlocks.

How to Keep Your Dreads & Dreadlocks From Unravelling...

Unravelled dreadlocks can make your funky style look messy and unkempt. Growing your dreads can take months, but it will only take a few days for them to unravel if not properly cared for. They need to be sealed completely and re-twisted occasionally to keep them looking fresh and to allow any new hair to comply with the dread process.

Instructions:
Wash your dreads with a specialty dread shampoo (Knotty Boy Liquid Shampoo or Knotty Boy Shampoo Bar @ dreadz.co.uk) to get rid of any grime and dirt that may have built up in your hair. Wash twice so all the gunk is completely out. Concentrate on the roots and ends first, and then the rest of the hair on the second washing. Apply a conditioner (see Knotty Boy Conditioning Sprays - available in Coconut, Lavender or Green Tea @ dreadz.co.uk) only to the ends to prevent any rough ends from breaking off.

Towel-dry your dreads. Squeeze out any excess moisture with the towel, and allow the dreads to dry completely before using any styling products. Putting any wax or gel in your dreads while they are still wet can leave them smelling bad and attract more dirt and possibly mould.

Grip any loose hair at the roots after the hair dries, and wrap it around the nearest dread. Use a small amount of dread wax (Knotty Boy Dreadlock Wax available in Light or Dark colour @ dreadz.co.uk) to hold the loose hair, and secure it to the dread. Take a bit more wax, and apply it to your dreads by rolling the hair back and forth between your palms. Repeat this process for the rest of the dreads.

Secure each dread with a heavy-duty elastic hair band (available @ dreadz.co.uk) at least 1/2 inch from the tips. Tighten the band as much as possible; in most dreads, this will not harm or break the hair. Blow-dry your dreads on high heat to seal in the wax. Grab each dread, and pull it away from the rest of your hair, moving the blow dryer from the roots to the tips. Do this until every dread has been blasted with heat.

Tips & Warnings:

Only wash your dreads once a week. Too much stimulation can cause fuzziness and unravelling.

Keep your scalp fresh and itch-free by using a peppermint hair spray to cool and soothe it.

Mature dreadlocks - 6 months or older - on the other hand, are slightly more difficult to thicken, but it is still doable. The best method of thickening dreads is to combine two or more dreadlocks into one, leaving you with a forked dread or "congo."

New Dreadlocks:
Comb out the dreadlocks you wish to combine. Start combing at the tips and work towards the roots. Re-dread the combed dreadlocks. Backcomb the hair of both sections back together; they will now form one large dreadlock. Place a rubber band (available @ dreadz.co.uk) at the combined root. Place one per every inch down the dreadlock as well. This will encourage joined growth. The length of time it will take for them to combine depends on your hair type. Remove the rubber bands. Make sure to do this only once the new, joined, locked growth has formed.

Mature Dreadlocks:
Find the roots of two dreadlocks you wish to combine. Bind them together using embroidery floss or yarn. The closer to your scalp that you bind, the better. Place a hair elastic at the roots. (available @ dreadz.co.uk). Rub your roots. Hold the combined dread at the base and gently rub in different directions against your scalp. Palm-roll the combined dreads together, as one, from root to tip. To palm-roll, hold the base of the dreadlock between both of your palms and roll it back and forth as fast as you can, pressing firmly.

Deodorise your dreads..." title="How to Get Smells Out of My Dreadlocks? Deodorise your dreads...">Dreadlocks are matted coils of hair usually seen on men and women with longer hair. Those with dreadlocks need to follow a hair care routine that's different from those without to keep their hair odour free and to maintain the style. Because they are thickly matted, dreadlocks don't dry out as well as other hairstyles. The result can be the retention of moisture, causing a musty mildew smell.

Instructions:
Wash your hair once a week using a dreadlocks shampoo (Knotty Boy Liquid Shampoo or Knotty Boy Shampoo Bar @ dreadz.co.uk) that doesn't contain oils that can cause your hair to retain moisture. Concentrate the shampoo on your scalp. As you rinse off, the shampoo that washes down your dreadlocks is enough to clean them. Squeeze the dreadlocks carefully with a towel to absorb as much moisture as possible. If the towel is wet after drying, grab another towel and give the dreadlocks a good squeeze again.

Use thick absorbent towels to remove as much water as possible. Head outside, if possible, and sit in the sun to dry your dreadlocks. The sunshine and fresh air help to speed up the drying process, while freshening your hair and preventing mould and mildew from growing inside the coils. If it's not possible to sit outside long enough, use a hair dryer to thoroughly dry your dreads.

Spray your scalp with a Spray (see Knotty Boy Natural MISTic Deodorizer & Fragrance Sprays - available in 3 different scents @ dreadz.co.uk) between washings to combat itchiness and freshen your hair. Spritz a cloud of the Spray into the air and walk through it to get a light misting on the hair. Allow the misting of spray to air dry on your scalp and dreadlocks. For itchy scalps we have Knotty Boy Peppermint Cooling Spray @ dreadz.co.uk.

Thickening Dreadlocks... How Can I Thicken Up My Dreads?

Dreadlocks originated in East Africa and consist of coils of hair that have been matted. Hair that has not been brushed or combed will eventually tangle and twist, resulting in dreadlocks. Typically, dreadlocks are about the width of your finger, but even dreadlocks that start out skinny will eventually thicken up.

Instructions:
Combine a few thinner dreadlocks to create one thick dreadlock. Gather the thin dreadlocks together at the root and secure with a rubber band. You'll have to leave your hair like this for a few months, until new hair grows and merges all of the hair in the dreadlock together. Massage your scalp. This will help your scalp to product natural oils and will maintain the health of your hair. Massage for a few minutes, a few times a week.

Use hair care supplies intended for dreadlocks. Purchase specialty shampoo, conditioner and wax that's meant specifically for people with dreadlocks (all dreadlock products available @ dreadz.co.uk). Avoid using chemical products on your hair. Some people use wires or rolling at the base to try to force the hair into a particular shape, but this won't work either. The dread has to collect all of the hair on your head in order to form and thicken.

Wait! Eventually, your dreadlocks will thicken as your hair grows and continues to twist around your current dreads. Growing and thickening your dreadlocks takes time, so the most important thing to have is patience.

To have beautiful, shiny dreadlocks they need to be properly maintained and cared for. Healthy dreadlocks are easy with a few tips that can add lustre to your twisted locks. Add shine to dreadlocks and bring this ancient hairstyle up to date and glossy.

Instructions:
Shampoo with a low-residue shampoo (Knotty Boy Liquid Dread Shampoo or Knotty Boy Shampoo Bar @ dreadz.co.uk). Using a shampoo that lathers up too much soap can leave shampoo in your hair and cause build-up, making your dreadlocks appear dull and lifeless. Use lukewarm water and wash dreads gently.

Massage your head often. This will stimulate the scalp, which releases natural oils into the dreadlocks, creating shine. Just make sure your hands are free of dirt or dust before you rub your scalp.

Use dreadlock wax (Knotty Boy Dread Wax with hemp seed oil @ dreadz.co.uk) to polish up your dreads. A small amount is all that is needed to add some neatness and shine to your dreadlocks. Special dreadlock wax can be purchased at dreadz.co.uk.

Sleep with a scarf over your head every night. This will encourage more natural oil production to add lustre to your hair, as well as keep the shape of your dreadlocks intact.

How to Repair a Dreadlock That Has Thinned Out at the Root

One problem includes thinning of the hair where the dreadlocks meet the scalp. After ruling out the cause as natural thinning due to pattern baldness, take steps to re-strengthen the weakened bases of dreadlocks.

Instructions:
Lighten dreadlocks that are too heavy and that are causing undue stress on or pulling out the hair roots. Lighten a heavy dreadlock by cutting it shorter or by splitting it down the middle with scissors to turn it into two thinner dreadlocks. Over time, the split dreadlocks will round out.

Strengthen dreadlock roots that are thinning due to unhealthy, brittle hair that is breaking. Use only high-quality, moisturizing hair products (see Knotty Boy Dreadlock hair products @ dreadz.co.uk). Avoid chemical-based treatments and exposure of hair to high temperatures, using only low-temperature hair dryers. Consume more foods that are high in essential fatty acids, such as salmon, eggs, olive oil, walnuts and dark green leafy vegetables.

Thicken and re-tighten dreadlock roots once hair health is restored (we recommend Knotty Boy Locksteady Tightening Gel @ dreadz.co.uk). Hold the base of the dreadlock between the middle and pointer fingers and bring in any extra hairs from around the dreadlock. Wind the the base of the dreadlock repeatedly in a clockwise direction, until the hairs become knotted.

Decorate & Accessorize your Dreads">Adding beads is one way of decorating your dreadlocks. Specialized dreadlock beads can be purchased online @ dreadz.co.uk. Beads can be found in a range of different materials including wood, metal and plastic. They also can be painted with a variety of different colours and designs. The beads are generally inexpensive and many can be found for less than 50p per bead.

Instructions:
Buy or collect a selection of beads with different-sized holes in the center. Trying each bead will allow you to see what sized hole the dreadlock beads need to be to fit tightly over a dreadlock. This is much like finding the right sized ring to fit a finger. This will allow you to buy beads easily online in the future.

You may also find that your dreadlocks are of varied widths, meaning that you can use a variety of different-sized beads. Apply a bead to the dreadlock by simply sliding it on like a ring. Move it up the dreadlock until the bead is fitted tightly enough and feels secure, so it will not slide off. The rough texture of the dreadlock will be enough to keep the bead from sliding as long as it is tightly fitted.

WEAR A LONG SCARF TURBAN - This version is by far with the most volume! And to achieve that, you really have to have a base underneath, and that, this time is a must, is another scarf underneath.

Pull your hair up high in a bun.

Tie a knot of a longer scarf at the top front of your head. Wrap one loose end of the scarf around your head.

Tuck it in the pockets under the knot.

Take the second loose end of the scarf and fold it over the knot.

Tuck the second loose end into the pockets but leave the fringes loose and hanging.

Tie another long scarf with the knot at the back or an a side.

Tuck in both loose ends anyway you desire.

Voila!

Fluff the scarf to get the volume. Here too, you may have additional scarf underneath, that is not necessary but it will get you great volume.

Take a square scarf.

Fold the corners toward the centre.

Then fold again in half.

Tie the knot at the back of your head, leaving the knot as is.

This is a simple casual style. You decide how much of the length you want to show. And also, if you want, you could have parts of your hair covering the knot. I prefer the 'messy' style, so I teased a bit of my hair at the back and gave it the volume you're seeing.
