Happy Pink!

I hope everyone is safe and warm.

We are supposed to have snow tonight but so far it's hasn't shown up.

This winter has been so mild compared to last winter's storms that were one after another.

I'm happy to be here for Pink Saturday this week.

I have completed some handmade Fabric Flowers.

I thought they would be perfect for my pink for this week. ♥

They are made from delicate Lawn, Rayon Batiks and the

Pink one is made with strips from an old bed sheet.

Pinafore Aprons ~ Part 3

Jester’s Tunic

Luxuriantly flowered panels of woven cotton offer protection from splatters at front and back. Bias tape is used for ties, and to bind the sailcloth borders.

Flower Garland

Flower shapes are sketched on cotton broadcloth, machine satin stitched and cut out. Apron is batiste with cording to accent the gathered skirt.

Circus Stripes

The fanciful dickey and teardrop designs are machine appliqued and outlined with narrow bias tape. Fabric is all cotton with ties at neck and waist.

I made something similar to the Jester’s Tunic in my Home Economics class in the early 70’s. And of course, I made several of the smocks made from the acrylic fabrics at that time. How many of you made the smocks? I had some really wild ones.

Pinafore Aprons ~ Part 2

This is Part 2 of my re-post about the Pinafores.

Strawberry Festival

Pastel colors set off satin stitched berries on the bib;

the shapely skirt has two released pleats.

Heavy cotton with contrasting border and ties at waist.

Ballerina

A ring of ruffly petals and a scalloped hem give the look

of a tutu to this charming design.

It’s made with checked gingham with petals and wide sash of silk organza.

Appliqued A-Line

Hand appliqued sunflowers bloom on an apron that ties at neck and waist.

The cotton broadcloth is shown in a popular color scheme, pink and orange.

This is a re-post from last year this time. I thought it would be fun to look at all of the Pinafores again.

Ribbon Swirl

Sheer cotton is softly
gathered at the waistband

of the skirt and bordered
with top-stitched grosgrain ribbon.
The ties at neck and waist are

also grosgrain.

Country Calico

Calico provides gay

contrast at the slip-over collar, covered

buttons and flaps of the two patch

pockets. The golden yellow fabric is

broadcloth.

Alpine Dirndl

This dainty apron has

finely pleated bodice, tiny pearl buttons

and decorative ribbon circling the scoop

neck. Cotton broadcloth; ties at waist of

gathered skirt.

I think all of us that do needlework, knit or crochet will love it. ♥

Look at the Swift Yarn Winder and

she is holding her needlework frame with work in progress.

Besides that I LOVE, LOVE her "fingerless gloves" and cap.

The gloves look like they are made from sheer fabric and lace.

Swoon!

The Green Thing ♥ Becoming More Educated

Hello to Everyone....Hope you all are having a good day.
This post may not be a popular one for many that read "The Green Thing" story that I've posted
below but for so many of us it will hit home because we remember these things as part of our lives.
For the younger generation....become a bit more educated about "our" {the boomers} generation.

It's very cold here...down to 11 degrees and we are using only our wood stove

to heat the main level. My studio is closed right now...not using the heat. In fact, we
haven't turned on the central heat on the main level or lower level at all.

The lower level has a wood pellet stove but we have it set to only come on when it reaches 55 degrees.

We are conserving energy {Saving Money} even at the cost of being a bit on the cool side.
If we could afford to go totally solar along with the pellet stove and wood stove
we could actually get "off the grid". We have a well for water. I believe this is a dream for many of us.

One more night of frigid temps and then tomorrow it warms up to the 40's. A heat wave! :0)

It really makes one appreciate those that lived when there was no electricity or other conveniences.

To gather our own wood instead of buying it already cut and split...

Thomas has followed

the process of finding wood that has fallen,

dragging it out of the woods or up a slope,

cutting it to fit in the bed of the truck,

hauling it home, taking it out of the truck,

cutting it more, then splitting it if needed,

then storing it so it dries properly.

And finally bringing some in the house

to build a fire!

This is a continuous process during the year to accumulate enough wood

to get us through the winter. It is hard work. It is around the clock monitoring

to feed the fire so it doesn't go out.

As Thomas and I have said, "How did the pioneers have time to grow food, cook,

wash clothes, tend to the children among many other things plus

STAY WARM??

As we can see there were many reasons for having large families and no one was lazy, no
television, computers, on and on it goes.

Thomas will gather wood until he's physically not able.
What will we do then? We will have to buy it.
We can only hope the price of wood stays lower than buying electricity.

If you happen to be a Young Green minded person please don't be offended....instead, be educated

so you will think a bit before you make a statement like this cashier did.

The Green Thing

I was Checking out at the grocery store recently, the young cashier suggested
I should bring my own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.
I apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days.

" The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to
save our environment for future generations." She was right about one thing --
our generation didn't have the green thing in “Our” day.

So what did we have back then…?

After some reflection and soul-searching on "Our" day
here's what I remembered we did have.... Back then, we returned milk bottles,
soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant
to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles repeatedly.
So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.
We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building.
We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine
every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind.
We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts --
wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days.

Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.
But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day.
Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room.
And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?),
not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen,
we blended and stirred by hand because we
didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail,
we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn.
We used a push mower that ran on human power.
We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club
to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle
every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead
of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away
the whole razor just because the blade got dull.
But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school
or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.
We had one electrical outlet in a room,
not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.

And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles
out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. We did as we were asked
BECAUSE WE RESPECTED OUR PARENTS
But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were
just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

from a smarty-pants young person can add to this.

Learning about "our" generation should bring about
attitude adjustments and have you see that our generation is not totally
responsible for the damage to our environment.
I guess you can say our generation did not know the consequences

of many things but as David has pointed out
we certainly were not deliberately negligent. But I do agree that things have
gotten out of hand the last couple of decades in many different areas but not
all has happened due to our generation.

I respect your opinion...however I will not publish a comment that is
posted out of meanness because that is not my intent for posting this.

I hope you enjoyed your Christmas Holidays.
Here we are with another
year close to making its entrance.
2011 has really gone by fast for me.

I found a 1903 Grammar book in the thrift store.
I didn't see these papers until after I got home.
A good surprise...don't you think?
The first page has the date of September 20, 1897

And then as I was looking through magazine pages I've saved through the years

I came across this one from 2002 that is really a cool project.

They have taken this worn out

chair and recovered it with canvas cloth.

Then the artist painted all over it. How cool is that?

For Pink Saturday I'm sharing a
vintage Quilt Block that came from my Grandmother.
I scanned it at 300dpi and softened the colors.
You can print it out if you like.

The wood stove has a nice fire and will continue to through many days.

A cold-er front is moving in over the weekend.

Vintage and New Fabrics can work magic on an ordinary iron bed.

This bed has obviously had the headboard modified to give the feel of a divider screen

I love the look of these fabrics and lace attached to the headboard,

don't you?

French Lace...

Today I'm sharing a photograph of a card of vintage French Lace

that I found in an antique shop in Bell Buckle, Tennessee.

Have you ever been to this tiny town?

If not, it's ALL about junking and antiquing and food...if you blink you will miss it!

And you really don't want to! Lovely, lovely stuff that's waiting to come home with you. :0)

Do you love this vintage paper doll?

Actually she was cut from a vintage magazine by someone else.

There are names written in pencil on the back of each one as if

it were a child playing a game? Don't know but I'm glad I rescued them.

They are quite fragile so I'm scanning all of them

so I'll be able to print and cut them when I want to play.

Do you remember these animal fabric panels from the 70's?? I used to have the kitty cat...
Wish I had ALL of them today...
You'd think this type of panel would be very popular right now..
I wish they'd produce them again.

These pictures came from a 1978 Decorating and Craft Ideas magazine.

The bottoms of the paws were even detailed...very cool, indeed...

What do I love about this room?

This is a room that I could lay down in and go to sleep. It makes me think of a child's room all grown up. I smell the scent of lavender and the glitter twinkles like stars. The vintage chenille bedspread and pillows speak of a time that's past…but still so comforting and full of peaceful energy.
