We recently received a request from a reader to offer some insight into a dream that she had been having almost every night for a week. Her dream interpretation request is as follows (edited to remove identifying information):

“I am in a very happy relationship myself but most nights for the last week I have dreamt about two men - famous and who I see as powerful and respected men. I am only 24 and run my own 2 companies! These dreams aren’t so much graphic sexually but I feel loved and respected in the dreams by them i think”

I first asked a couple of clarifying questions and learned that only one man appears in a dream at a time and that she runs two companies in her waking life. The next step was providing her with some possible interpretations. Following is the interpretation I provided.

Please remember that the best way to utilize the information I will share with you is to compare it to what you know to be true in your life and search within yourself for the “meaning” that makes sense in your situation.

Dreaming about relationships is very common and in your situation I feel that there are two different probable explanations for your dream. I always try to give at least two possible interpretations so that you will have more than one place to start your inner work.

The first possibility is that the powerful, successful men symbolize facets of your own personality. We often dream about ourselves reflected in others. Perhaps you dream about men because of a societal context that tells us success and power in a career is embodied by a man.

The feelings that you have of being loved and respected by them could indicate places that you would like to see some improvement in a current relationship, not necessarily with your significant other. I do not know what relationship, if any, you have with your father or father figure in your life but that could certainly be a relationship that this could apply to.

The second possibility I see is more straightforward, in that these men and the feelings they invoke within you in the dream, symbolize what you want out of a romantic relationship. Perhaps, although you are happy with your significant other, there are some areas of that relationship you would like to see change, even if you haven’t acknowledged that in your waking life.

Alternately, in this scenario, the father or father figure of your waking life could be the relationship that you would like to see changed. Perhaps, because you are successful at such a young age you desire more acknowledgments of your success and strength as a woman.

The reader was thankful for these insights and was able to look into her own life and relationships with this interpretation and become aware of her personal truths within her dreams. Please note that the information I shared with our dear reader was merely a suggestion of possibilities. Dreams, like people, are unique and when trying to interpret them you must always put the possible meanings into the context of your own experiences and emotions.

Thank you to our reader for her request and we hope that should anyone else have special requests they will take the time to fill out our contact form located HERE.

I read in Reuters a while back that most Americans do not get enough sleep. While the story does a good job of outlining the physical and mental impact, it is important to remember that this will negatively impact your dream studies as well. Getting accurate dream meanings requires that you remember your dreams in as much detail as possible, something you cannot do if you are overly tired.

To help out my readers I have collected the ten best tips for getting a good nights rest from around the internet. My wife has battled insomnia most of her lifetime and we can attest that these tips are all effective and natural. You should avoid sleep medication except as a last resort as they have very harmful effects on your dreams.

Wake up at the same time every day. This is important as your body will quickly adapt if you allow it to. The problem many have is keeping that schedule even during weekends.

Don’t lie down unless you are tired. While it’s important to get up at the same time you may find yourself getting tired at different times depending on your days activities. This is normal and you should learn to listen to your body. Going to bed before you are tired will result in a less restful sleep.

Don’t eat or drink right before bedtime. You should give yourself a few hours after eating before lying down to sleep. Studies have found that eating right before bedtime causes many to have problems falling asleep.

Get in shape. People who exercise regularly have been found to sleep better. While it’s not necessary to join a gym to get a better nights sleep, its important to engage in some physical activity every day. If you live someplace where its possible going for a walk in the evening is very helpful and relaxing.

Don’t exercise right before bedtime. Exercising right before going to sleep is a sure fire way to ensure that you will have problems falling asleep. Also this can lead to more cramping and discomfort during the night.

Cut back on caffeine. Most American’s are addicted to stimulants such as caffeine. Caffeine makes it much more difficult to sleep soundly. From experience cutting way back on caffeine made an immediate improvement in my sleep quality.

Remove distractions from the bedroom. While many guides suggest removing everything from the bedroom it is important to at the least remove any lights or noises. While you may be able to fall asleep with these distractions they will prevent you from sleeping as deeply as you would otherwise.

Take a warm bath before bed. This will raise your temperature and relax your body. Both of these things will help you fall asleep and sleep better. If your one of those that prefers showers then standing under a hot shower will be nearly as good.

Get out in the sunlight. The human mind and body are conditioned to be awake during the day and asleep at night. If you work inside make a point of spending some time outside each day. This will not only be healthy but will help you sleep as well.

Don’t be afraid to seek help. If all else fails consult a specialist. There are millions of Americans who have problems sleeping and you may be one of them.

Learn to listen to your body. Scientists are fond of saying that everyone needs x or y hours of sleep but the truth is that everyone is different. Sleep when you are tired and build a routine and you will be fine. If you are still tired but can’t sleep there may be an underlying problem that you should see a doctor about. Often these are psychological but there are medical problems such as sleep apnea that can be quite serious.

I hope this list helps.

After publishing a couple introduction articles into keeping dream journals we have received a few emails asking about, and a nice comment promoting, electronic and online dream journals. I therefore thought that I would follow up with my own personal opinions and experiences with these types of dream journals. My wife has been using her computer to record her dream journal successfully for almost a year now. In that time we have learned a lot about how technology can greatly improve your quest for dream meanings.

Before I go into all that though we need to decide if using technology is right for you. Not everyone can successfully keep a dream journal this way. Even though I am much more comfortable with computers than my wife I have never been able to succeed keeping an electronic dream journal. Remember that the primary goal will always be to increase dream memory and therefore improve our odds of successfully deciphering dream meanings. Therefore whatever works for you is always the best method.

The Bad:

Using a computer wakes you up more than writing
It has been shown to be helpful to remain as much asleep as possible while recording your dreams. This greatly increases dream recall and leads to more accurate dream meanings. The act of getting out of bed, looking at a bright computer monitor, and typing will wake you up much more than writing in a journal.

It is easier to put off until later
Just like staying as asleep as possible, it is crucial to the success of the dream journal that you record your dreams as quickly as possible. I for one seem to need to use the restroom as soon as my feet hit the floor in the mornings. Taking a pit stop on the way to the computer is not conducive to a good journal entry. This may not be a problem for everyone, but from experience I can say that everyone I know who keeps electronic journals misses more mornings that those who keep physical journals.

It is harder to integrate into your morning routine
Humans are creatures of habit and unless your morning routine already includes a half asleep computer session first thing then adding that in can be very difficult for many people.

The Good:

It is more accessible
Not everyone is able to write in a physical journal, or your penmanship may be poor enough that reading what you wrote is nearly impossible. Lets face it, almost all of us can quickly learn to type much faster than we can write. The accessibility of electronic journals, and the speed of entry are compelling reasons to adopt this format.

Many have great bells and whistles
Where I enjoy the simplicity and realness of writing in a physical journal, there are many features that I miss out on. Most of the electronic journals give you a great amount of power when it comes to indexing, sorting, searching and studying your dream meanings. I will be providing a list of my favorite electronic journals later this week and go into more detail there on the features.

Better Security
Finally online journals provide something that no physical journal can really provide, security. Dreams are like windows into our subconscious thoughts and feelings and many people want the security and privacy of electronic journals. So if security and privacy are a concern you may want to look into our upcoming article on the best electronic journals.

There you have it, three pros and three cons of electronic journals. Personally I greatly prefer a physical journal, but I know others who prefer the electronic ones. Like I said before the goal is to keep a successful dream journal and improve your odds of correctly interpreting your dream meanings. Use the method that works best for you.

Later we will be sharing our reviews of some of the best dream journal software and websites. We will also be sharing some great tips on how to incorporate technology to greatly improve your ability to research dream meanings. So no matter whether or not you use an electronic dream journal you will want to read those stories.

A recent article here on dream-psychic.com caught my eye and I decided to expand on it with my own personal experience. The article, HERE, detailed 5 common misunderstandings regarding lucid dreaming. Each of these things was something that I had thought or felt at one time or another.

I am not writing an in depth description of my journey into lucid dreaming, rather a brief commentary on these misunderstandings and their impact on my own experience.

I was very skeptical about the validity of lucid dreaming so I did a lot of research to see if it was something that was more than just a paranormal lover’s wish. At that time there wasn’t a lot of information out there except for in paranormal circles. I still decided to give it a try. Today there is a lot more info available, and here is a link to a great article that somewhat details the trip from foolishness to actual psychological credibility lucid dreaming has made.

One of the biggest misconceptions that I personally had to overcome regarding lucid dreaming was that it was somehow related to witchcraft, satanism, or some other unnatural thing. In fact, that is not true at all. Even when I started the beginnings of my quest for lucid dreams I still harbored hesitation that I was dabbling in something I shouldn’t. Once I realized that it was; in fact, a natural normal experience my qualms abated. Again, the science of lucid dreaming helped me through this one and I encourage anyone who has any sort of religious hesitance toward this to really look at reality and science and keep in mind that it is, after all, a dream.

When I first read of lucid dreaming I thought that it was something that I would perhaps aspire to but not really attain. I bought a book that detailed some easy beginning steps and within a month I was experiencing my first intentional dream awareness. Because of my religious hangups I probably delayed myself a bit and I really feel that it needn’t have taken as long as it did. This site has really good tips on starting out, one of which is keep a dream diary or dream journal, something that is great for interpreting dream meanings as well.

Once I was actually experiencing lucidity in my dreams I became a bit obsessed with furthering my education on dream meanings and found several dream dictionaries. I shared this with my husband and together we have compiled dream-psychic.com as a great dream meanings resource for all of you who are interested in the same things. Together we can learn and grow, reach out and fully experience all of our consciousness. Please feel free to share your tips for lucid dreaming as well as your experiences.

I look forward to traveling this path with our friends and readers. Together we will discover our hidden dream meanings, and, perhaps, new levels of existence.

5 simple steps that will ensure your dream journal is a success

In my previous post on Dream Journals “Dream Journals - An Introduction” I wrote about the benefits of keeping a dream journal. Despite the many benefits in interpreting dream meanings, most who start a dream journal will abandon them after a short time. While even a few weeks will have long lasting benefits; to truly get the most out of dream journals they should be maintained for a much longer time. Personally I have almost a year of dreams and their meanings in my dream journal, and it has been invaluable for me. So here are 5 quick and easy tips to help you keep your dream journal.

#1 - Invest in your Dream Journal
Experts agree that one of the best ways to ensure that you stick to something is to make a personal sacrifice and investment into the project. This applies just as much to keeping a dream journal as it does to anything else. If your just using some loose notebook paper your much more likely to abandon the project. While no one is saying you need to invest a large sum of money on a fancy journal, if you invest some time and energy into the journal you are much more likely to stick with it.

#2 - Place the Dream Journal beside your bed
The best time to write in your dream journal is right after waking up, but before you have come fully awake. This period is the best time to remember your dreams from the night before. Once you have woken up and started moving around you will find that your dreams fade away quickly. For this reason it is best to keep your journal handy so that you can wake up and record your dreams without having to move about too much.

#3 - Wake up Early
I know it sounds horrible, as most of us are so worn out from everyday stress that every second of sleep is precious. However waking even 5 minutes earlier than normal can greatly improve dream recollection. This is because your sleep pattern is such that you will be waking up directly from a dream. Doing this can improve your odds of correctly remember the dream, which will improve your chances at getting accurate dream meanings.

#4 - Involve the Family
This may not apply to everyone but for those of us with spouses, children, or roommates of any kind it is important to involve them. At the very least let them know what is going on and that you need 10 minutes every morning to reflect and write. From experience I can tell you that it is very difficult to do this with hungry children crawling into your bed.

#5 - Keep it Fun
While dream journals are important tools to deciphering dream meanings don’t get overly concerned about them. Keeping the process fun and informal will help you in the long run in keeping them going.

Over the past few years we have talked to many people about their dream meanings. During most of the conversations the topic of improving dream recollection comes up at some point. Dream recollection is a key aspect to deciphering dream meanings as obviously remembering more dreams, with greater detail will improve your ability to decipher dream meanings. This article is a short introduction into the first step most people take into improving their dream recollection; Dream Journals.

Dream Journals are basically a daily diary of the dreams you remember from the night before. Each morning, while still laying in bed, you take a few moments to reflect over any dreams you can recall. This time of reflection is best done while still as much asleep as possible, and with the lights out. The more you allow yourself to wake up the less you will remember when your first starting out. This will improve quickly though.

After you have collected your thoughts you simply record them in as much detail as possible into your dream journal. It helps to try to remember experiencing the dream as if you were still dreaming. This process is then repeated every morning, and over time your dream journal will fill up and you will start seeing patterns to your dreams that you would have missed otherwise. This journal then becomes an invaluable resource when you are studying your dream meanings.

Keeping a dream journal is important for other reasons than just using it for researching dream meanings. The process of keeping the journal makes you more aware of your dreams. With practice you will find that you quickly start remembering details that you would have completely forgotten before. As you practice you will also start remembering dreams from earlier in the night that most people never remember.

Overall Dream Journals are an inexpensive and easy way to increase your dream recollection and greatly improve your ability to research dream meanings. We have both been keeping our dream journals most every night for years and they have greatly improved our ability to remember dreams and have proven invaluable when researching dreams. I will be writing some simple tips for keeping a good dream journal in the next few days. As always feel free to leave comments. Thanks.

Lucid dreams are a subject that comes up often whenever the topic of dream meanings and dream research comes up. I have found that through talking to many people that there are some common misunderstandings about lucid dreams. So instead of writing up an in depth overview of lucid dreams which you can find in other places I figured I would instead pass along some things most of you may not know about lucid dreams.

Science Backs up Lucid Dream Claims
Unlike many of the other aspects of dreams and understanding our dream meanings, lucid dreams have been studied and confirmed by the scientific community. While this confirmation is unnecessary for those of us who have experienced lucid dreams it is comforting for those who have not. Also it helps to shut up any doubting co-workers, friends, family members or whoever.

Lucid Dreaming is Perfectly Natural
Many people have expressed the concern that lucid dreaming is somehow connected to witchcraft, magic, or some other nonsense. The truth is that most people will experience lucid dreams a couple times during their lives even if they have no idea what a lucid dream is or have any knowledge of the supernatural. So you can feel comfortable knowing that lucid dreams are no more supernatural than dreaming normally.

Lucid Dreaming is an Easily Learnable Skill
Not only is lucid dreaming normal and experienced by most people, it is a skill that can be learned and improved upon. The average person can expect to experience lucid dreams once or twice in their lives. With training and practice achieving lucid dreams a couple times a month is easily achievable as I can personally attest to.

Learning to Have Lucid Dreams is Easy
Many people worry that learning to lucid dream is going to be difficult or take a lot of time. Nothing could be further from the truth. The techniques are very simple, they can be done by anyone, and you will see results very quickly. There are several techniques that require almost no time or energy to implement and have excellent success rates, some as high as 60% or more.

Lucid Dreaming Helps With Researching Dream Meanings
Another concern that people have about lucid dreams is that you will miss out on important messages that your dreams would contain. This is a valid concern; however those who learn how to have lucid dreams actually have better dream recall than others. This greatly improves their ability to research dream meanings.

There you go, 5 common misunderstandings about lucid dreams. Personally I think that lucid dreams are the most satisfying result of my research into dream meanings. The experience is completely unlike anything and is nearly indescribable. I hope that after reading this you feel more comfortable with the concept of learning to lucid dream. Keep an eye out with for some more resources on lucid dreams and deciphering your dream meanings.

Whatever symbol is used to impress the dreamer is the one which is likely to warn him more definitely than any other. No two persons being ever in the same state at the same time, the same symbols would hardly convey identical impressions; neither will the same dream be as effective in all cases of business or love with the same dreamer.person’s dream perception wavers, much as it does in waking hours. You fail to find the same fragrance in the rose at all times, though the same influences seemingly surround you; and thus it is that different dreams must be used for different persons to convey the same meaning.

Creation, confident of her power to perfect her designs, does not resort to that monotony in her work, which might result were the perception of man, or the petals and fragrance of flowers cast from one stereotyped mold of intelligence, beauty or sweetness. This variety of scheme runs through all creation. You think you have identical dreams, but there is always some variation, even if it be something dreamed immediately over. Nature is no sluggard and is forever changing her compounds, so that there is bound to be change in the details even of dreams. This change would not materially affect the approach of happiness or sorrow in different people, and hence the same dreams are reliable for all.

Persons of the same or similar temperament will be more deeply impressed by a certain dream than would people their opposite; and though the dream cannot be the same in detail yet it is apparently the same, just as two like flowers are called roses, though they are not identical.

If a young woman twenty-five and a girl of fifteen should each have a dream of marriage, the same definition would apply to each, just the same as if they would each approach a flower and smell of it differently. Different influences will possess them unconsciously, though the outward appearance be the same.

A young woman of a certain age is warned in a dream of trouble likely to befall her, while another of similar age and threatened trouble is warned also, but in different symbols, which she fails to grasp and bring back to waking existence, and she thus believes she has had no warning dream.

There are those in the world who lack subjective strength, material or spiritual, and hence they fail to receive dreams, however symbolic, because there is no power within them to retain these impressions.
There are many reasons for this loss, utter material gross-ness, want of memory, physical weakness uncoupled from extreme nervousness, and total lack of faith in any warning or revelation purporting or coming from the dream consciousness.

To dream at night and the following day have the thing dreamed of actually take place, or come before your notice, is not allegorical. It is the higher or spiritual sense living or grasping the immediate future ahead of the physical mind. The spiritual body is always first to come into contact with the approaching future; it is present with it, while still future to the physical body. There is no reason why man should not grasp coming events earlier, only he does not cultivate inner sight as he does his outer senses. The allegorical is used because man weakens his spiritual force by catering to the material senses.
He clings to the pleasures and woes of the material world to the exclusion of spirituality.

Why do we dream and do our dreams have meanings? This is a question that has been asked for as long as man has walked the earth. The answer unfortunately is unclear and varies greatly depending on who you ask. What we do know for a fact though is that dreams are very important to your physical and mental health. Deprived of REM sleep, the phase of sleep in which you dream, humans and other mammals quickly lose the ability to think and function properly regardless of how much other sleep they are receiving.

There is a lot of scientific research that suggests that one of the most compelling reasons for dreams, especially in regards to primitive man, was to practice survival skills. When you think about it this makes a certain amount of sense. There is simply no other way to practice the skills necessary to fight a saber tooth tiger in your waking life. Therefore, just as a martial artists practices until the movements become reflex, your dreams may allow you to practice stressful situations until your response is automatic. So while you may remember only a small fraction of your dreams, the body does not need to remember for the reflexes to kick in.

There are many real life examples that back up this theory as well. Often times after a stressful situation or near death experience survivors will state that they felt like they were in a dream-like state. Often they act without thought, reflexively, to a situation that they have never encountered in their waking life. Most often these reflexive actions are the difference between life and death. Now you could chalk those up to having good instincts, or being lucky, but the effects of spending a third of your lifetime sleeping and practicing for survival situations may be the true meanings of these events.

The final question, if you choose to accept this theory, is what effect does this have on dream meanings? After considering this for a while I am confident that this fits right in with what we have all seen and experienced about dreams and their meanings. If one of the purposes of dreams is to prepare you for the waking world then that only stresses the importance of fully understanding your dream meanings. The human brain is incredible and can retain much more information subconsciously than you could ever possibly be aware of. Dreams are the medium from which your subconscious can communicate the survival skills you need.

As man has adapted and progressed for most of us the possibility of facing a life or death situation has dramatically decreased. This has not changed the survival impact of our dreams. We still dream about life or death situations, but we also dream about social situations, situations at work, and situations with the family. All of these dreams prepare us to survive and thrive in our waking lives. However the primal aspect of man still lingers in our subconscious and that has made deciphering our dream meanings more difficult as time progresses. We are finding that while our dreams adapt to our daily lives often the meanings and symbolism remains the same.
