10 Order of Operations Practice Problems with Answers

Master PEMDAS and avoid common math mistakes with 10 step-by-step order of operations problems.

Math is made up of numerical expressions built of numbers and operations. They can be short and sweet or incredibly long and complex, but no matter their length, the rules for solving expressions are always the same. Once you know the rules, you can solve any expression—with a little practice!

Perhaps the most important of these rules is the order of operations—the particular order in which you must solve expressions. This order is always the same.

The order in which you solve the operations within an expression can be remembered as PEMDAS.

PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication & Division, Addition & Subtraction.

When solving numerical expressions, you must do so using the order of operations, or PEMDAS! In other words, start with P and end with S.

Keep in mind that if brackets are involved in order of operations problems, treat them like parentheses! If there are parentheses inside the brackets, start with what’s inside the parentheses first, next solve everything else inside the brackets, and then move on to what’s outside the brackets.

Common Order of Operations Mistakes

Following the order of operations is simple once you know PEMDAS, but before you use it, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Multiplication and division should be treated as equally important.

Although M comes before D in PEMDAS, multiplication and division both have the same level of priority and can be solved as they appear from left to right.

  • Addition and Subtraction should be treated as equally important.

Again, although A comes before S in PEMDAS, both operations share the same level of priority and should be solved in order from left to right.

To avoid making these common errors, think of PEMDAS as PEM/DA/S where M and D, and A and S, are interchangeable.

  • Don’t simplify parentheses out of order.

When there is more than one pair of parentheses, figuring out where to start can get confusing! Before you solve, map out which pairs of parentheses take priority. Remember, solve from left to right! If there are two pairs of parentheses, the pair closest to the beginning of the expression should be solved first.

5 Fun and Engaging Multiplication Practice Games

Memorizing the multiplication table is hard, but turning multiplication into a game makes it easy!

The following five multiplication practice games can be played in or out of the classroom and make learning fun!

Multiplication Relay (unlimited players)

Materials Needed

  • A large room or open space to play
  • Multiplication flash cards
  • A timer (optional)

Object of the Game

In a Multiplication Relay, two teams of students race to see who can solve the most multiplication problems within a given time.

An alternative way to play is to see which team can answer a set number of multiplication problems first—no timer necessary!

How to Play

  1. First, split all the players into two teams.
  2. Place the multiplication flash cards in two piles on the other side of the room/field/yard.
  3. On the count of three, the first player in each line runs to pick up a flash card, reads it aloud, and answers it as fast as they can.
  4. The referee (or teacher) gives the players a thumbs-up or thumbs-down depending on their answer, and then the student runs back to their team and gets back in line.
  5. The next runner does the same.
  6. Play continues until one team goes through all their flash cards, or until time is up.
  7. The team that either finished first or answered the most questions by the end wins.

Product Match (one to two players)

Materials Needed

  • An array of index cards with multiplication problems written on them. Do not include the answers!

When preparing this game, make sure each card pairs with another card that has a different expression on it but shares the same product. For example, one card labeled “4 x 3” should match with another card labeled “6 x 2”.

Object of the Game

The player(s) flip over two cards at a time, trying to find two cards that have the same product and get a “match.”

How to Play

  1. First, arrange all the index cards face-down on a table in a grid formation.
  2. Next, the player(s) flip over two cards at a time with the goal of making a match. If the two cards do not share the same product, the player(s) must put the cards back, face-down, and try again.
  3. If a player has found a match, those two cards can be put aside.
  4. The game ends when every card has been successfully matched.

Multiplication War (two players)

Materials Needed

  • A deck of playing cards

Object of the Game

In Multiplication War, players split a deck of cards and play the top card in their deck each turn, racing to multiply the values of the two cards before the other player.

How to Play

  1. Players begin the game by splitting a deck of regular playing cards evenly between them and keeping the cards face-down.
  2. On the count of three, both players turn the top card of their pile over and place it face-up in the middle.
  3. Next, players race to multiply the value of the two cards. Once a player has found the answer, they can shout it out!
  4. Whoever says their answer out loud first wins the round and adds the cards to the bottom of their pile.
  5. The player who wins all the cards in the deck first wins.

Multiplication Bingo (unlimited players)

Materials Needed

  • Two dice
  • One Bingo board per player.
  • Board markers (writing utensils, buttons, stickers, etc.)

The Bingo board must be labeled with the products you get when multiplying the values of the sides of the dice together.

Object of the Game

The goal of Multiplication Bingo is for players to fill in five spaces in a row on their Bingo board. The first player to get five in a row wins.

How to Play

  1. First, determine who the players are and who the caller is. Then give each player a Bingo board. Each board should be different.
  2. The caller then rolls the dice and announces what numbers they rolled.
  3. The players must then multiply those two numbers together. If they see the product of those numbers on their board, they can mark it.
  4. This continues until one player has five in a row and yells “BINGO!”

Multiplication Drills (unlimited players)

Materials Needed

  • A worksheet with multiplication problems on it (one for each participant)
  • Pencils
  • A timer
  • Rewards (optional)

The difficulty of the problems on the worksheet should depend on the skill level of the players.

You can make your own worksheets or find free printouts online!

Also, note that a reward isn’t a necessity, but it can definitely sweeten the deal for kids who aren’t too keen on math.

Object of the Game

The point of multiplication drills is to see how many multiplication problems the player can solve within a certain time frame. If there are multiple players, students can race to see who answers more problems.

How to Play

  1. Give each player a worksheet and a pencil. Then, start the timer! The length of time is up to you, but 1-3 minutes is recommended.
  2. During the allotted time, players try to answer as many questions on their worksheet as they can.
  3. When the timer is up, every player counts how many questions they got right.
  4. The player with the most correct answers wins.

10 Strategies for Solving Word Problems

Word problems are tricky! They can be full of complex scenarios, confusing units, and unnecessary data placed there just to trap you.

But on the other hand, word problems are an amazing tool for practicing math in a real-world context, giving you realistic scenarios and challenging not only your math skills but your problem-solving skills and imagination too!

No matter how you feel about them, there are certain strategies you can use to make solving word problems easier.

Want to know how to solve word problems? Let’s go over 10 simple strategies you can use to make the process easier.

1. Identify the operation

Solving a word problem means first identifying what the problem is asking in terms of numbers and operations. You can’t solve a word problem if you don’t know whether you’re supposed to add, subtract, multiply, or divide!

So, read through the problem carefully and pay attention to key words such as “sum” or “total” for addition, “difference” or “more/less” for subtraction, “product” or “area” for multiplication, and “out of” or “split equally” for division.

2. Rephrase the question in your own words

Once you’re able to rephrase the word problem using your own words, you have officially understood it. And you can’t correctly solve a word problem without understanding it!

Always take the time to read through the problem carefully until you are confident that you know what it says and what it’s asking you.

3. Draw a picture or diagram

It’s impossible to solve a word problem if you don’t understand what’s going on in the scenario described. If you’re confused about the scenario, draw it out!

Remember, nobody is expecting you to be the next Michelangelo—your drawings can be simple! Basic shapes or stick figures will do, as long as it helps you better visualize the problem.

4. Act out the scenario

Similar to the previous strategy, this one allows you to better visualize the problem at hand.

When acting scenarios out, no need to put on a whole production! Simply thinking the scenario through and picturing yourself within it can help you better understand how to solve the problem.

5. Write a number sentence

Word problems can always be rewritten as number sentences or equations. When reading a word problem, pay attention to the data you’re given and consider how you could combine it into a helpful number sentence.

Don’t worry about getting the number sentence correct on the first try. Just get something down on paper—you can rework it after!

6. C - Circle key information

While reading through the word problem, feel free to mark it up! Circle everything that seems important to you while reading, such as units and numbers.

7. U - Underline the question

The question in a word problem is the most important part! Underline it and reread it so you know exactly what to do.

8. B - Box any clues

Draw a box around anything else that seems important. These can be things like amounts or words associated with operations.

9. E - Eliminate the extra information

Many word problems offer information that isn’t actually needed to find the answer. Things like the names of places or people, background information, or unnecessary data can all be crossed out to prevent distraction.

10. S - Solve by showing your work

It’s better to have a messy paper and get the right answer than to have a perfectly neat piece of paper and get the wrong answer! Plus, showing your work is a great way to get your thoughts down on paper and work through them.

As you solve word problems, write things down and keep your notes organized.

To avoid feeling overwhelmed, focus on just two or three of these strategies at a time. Use them to solve a few word problems until you feel comfortable with them, then switch to two or three more.

Not every strategy will work for every student, or for every problem, so having a few strategies in your math toolbelt is a great way to ensure that you never get stuck on a word problem again!

Although there are several ways to solve long division problems, this guide explores long division using the standard algorithm, which is often the method 5th graders learn first. Like with any math concept, the key to strengthening long division skills is with plenty of practice, so let’s get started!

5th Grade Long Division (Standard Algorithm)

Let’s begin by defining a few important division terms:

 

Dividend: The number that is being divided. In 36/9=4, 36 is the dividend

Divisor: The number that you divide by, or how many equal groups to split the dividend into. In 36/9=4, 9 is the divisor

Quotient: The answer to the division problem. In 36/9=4, 4 is the quotient. 

Remainder: The amount “left over” if a number can’t be divided equally. For example, 38/9 can be divided into 4 groups with 2 left over, so 2 is the remainder. 

In 4th grade, students learn that division means to separate an amount into equal-sized groups. At this point, most students are comfortable with basic multiplication facts and understand the concept of combining equal groups, making it easier to see division as the inverse of multiplication. 

Long division is a structured method used to divide larger numbers by breaking them into smaller parts. Students follow a series of short, more manageable steps, using a mix of multiplication and subtraction, to find the answer. These steps are: 

  1. Divide
  2. Multiply
  3. Subtract
  4. Bring Down 

When 5th graders are first learning these steps, funny mnemonic devices can help commit them to memory. Some of my students’ favorites were:

Example 1: Dividing a two-digit number by a one-digit number

Now, follow the steps.

1. Divide
How many whole 6’s go into 9 without going over? (1)

2. Multiply

Find the product of 6 x 1 and write the answer underneath (6)

4. Bring Down (34)

5. Divide
How many whole 6’s go into 34 without going over? (5)

While every new school year comes with changes, reaching 5th grade is an especially important milestone. The transition between 4th and 5th grade often means increased academic rigor and more independence, along with changing friendships and other complex social dynamics. I often remind my own 5th grader to “control what you can control,” and starting school with the proper school supplies is an easy way for students to feel confident and prepared. 

Though it may seem like a small component of beginning a new school year, understanding what supplies your child needs and making a plan of how to get them is a great way to fuel excitement for 5th grade. Lesson Objectives

The learning objectives for this lesson are based on S.M.A.R.T. goal setting criteria: 

Specific

Students will solve multi-step numerical expressions using the order of operations: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction (PEMDAS). Students will not work with exponents in this introductory lesson. 

Measurable 

Students must demonstrate how to correctly use the order of operations to solve problems as a whole class and in small group settings. Students will demonstrate understanding by scoring at least 4 out of 6 questions accurately on their small group recording sheet and by completing an exit ticket. 

Achievable

Students have already developed fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and can accurately solve multi-step problems and explain their thinking.

Relevant

This lesson aligns with Common Core 5th Grade Mathematics Standards: Operations & Algebraic Thinking: Write and interpret numerical expressions (Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols). 

Time Bound

By the end of this 60-minute lesson, students will demonstrate basic understanding of how to use the order of operations to solve math expressions.

Assessment

Formative assessments include active class and small group participation, a completed recording sheet, and an exit ticket.

On the whiteboard, write the phrase Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally using colorful markers. Make the first letter of each word larger than the rest and in the same color. Invite the students to read the sentence aloud and guess the math lesson, asking questions like: 

  • Based on the sentence, what will we be learning about in math today?
  • Why do you think the first letters of each word are highlighted?
  • What are some “math words” each letter might stand for?

After students share their ideas, explain that the sentence is a way to remember the order of operations in certain math problems. Guide students through each word: parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction, writing the signs next to each. Explain that because this is a brand new concept, they will not focus on exponents today (cross off the word exponents to help them remember).

Learning Activities 

Direct Instruction

Model how to read PEMDAS from left to right and explain that we still follow the order of operations even when just a few operations are in the problem. 

Also highlight how multiplication and division, along with addition and subtraction, work as a “team,” and we always solve them left to right. 

Ask three students to raise their hands and give you a one-digit number that is less than 10. Write each number on the board, like this: 

(2×3) + 4

Model your thinking by saying 

  • First, I see parentheses, so I solve that problem first: 2 x 3 = 6. Then, I add 6 + 3 = 9.

Do this with two more problems and combinations. Before moving to guided and independent practice, make sure to address any confusion. 

Ask questions like:

  • If a problem has multiplication and division, which do I solve first? Why?
  • If a problem doesn’t have parentheses, do I still follow the order of operations?
  • Thumbs up, sideways, or down: how confident do you feel about the order of operations?

Guided Practice

As a whole group, solve the following problem: 

7 + 4 x 2

Guide the class through the example, asking for student input at each step.

  • What do we look for first? ( no parentheses)
  • Next? (multiplication)
  • Finally? (addition)

Then, have students work through one last example with a partner, recording their answer on a whiteboard or paper and sharing with the whole class. Observe which pairs accurately solve the problem and which might need more support. 

Independent/Small Group Work

Order of Operations Dice Game:

Each pair rolls the die 7 times and places the number into one of the blank spots in any order they choose. They can discard two numbers. Working together, solve the problem as a team. 

Optional Support: 

  • Create a recording sheet with fewer spaces and operations
  • Color-code each operation on the recording sheet and provide the same color-coded PEMDAS reference card to each pair. 
  • Create a checklist of steps
  • Pull a small group that needs extra help

Optional Challenge: 

  • Give students a “target number” on each problem. Challenge them to arrange their numbers to get as close to the target as they can. 

Exit Ticket

With 5 minutes left in the lesson, assign students an exit ticket to assess their level of understanding. Pass out an index card with a problem like this:

(5 x 6) – 4 + 2

Or, the exit ticket might have a word problem:

Natalie is trying to solve (5 x 6) – 4 + 2

She solves the problem in the parentheses first, then solves the addition problem. Is this the correct next step? Why or why not?

  • What went well? How do I know? 
  • What evidence do I have that students meet the learning objectives? 
  • What would I change? 
  • Was the activity too simple or too complex? 
  • What surprised me? 
  • Were the students engaged? Why or why not? 
  • Did I adjust instruction for different learners? 
  • Was the pacing too fast/too slow?
