I have noticed my website would freeze intermittently (at least 2-3 times a day) with an eventual 500 internal server error.

I'm talking about both CPU and memory, as an example I meant moving the slider to 1080mb/1080mhz but for the most part (aside from the spikes I refer to) 300mb/300mhz is fine.

My original question was if I had the slider at 1080, would I pay the full amount, even if I only peaked at 300mhz? It sounds like yes, from the other responses.

I can understand the position DH is in with my resource usage on a shared plan. It kind of let me get away with not having to block spammers and automated requests for awhile. Now I'm dealing with that issue more effectively since it directly effects my uptime and monthly billing.

The svn problem I refer to, and perhaps you might be able to validate this, is that my svn repository is on my home computer, and Capistrano defaults to an "export" being executed on the DH server pulling my code from my home box. When I try this it gets killed with signal 15.

Command is something like this:

machine.dreamhost $ svn list svn+ssh://myhomebox.com/path/to/project/repository
file1
file2
...
Killed by signal 15.

I tried the command on a few other servers and it worked fine. I seem to recall DH banning outbound ssh connections ("ssh tunneling" more specifically) about a year ago -- which would explain why the svn+ssh:// url gets killed (although nobody in support has confirmed that yet).

DH support told me if I upgraded, the process would no longer be killed since I would have more resources. Upon upgrading (and sliding the resource bar all the way up) it still is being killed every time.

In short, you're stuck with the $40.80 / month. If you can't summon an explanation yourself, here's mine:

A regular hosting account is like the local gym. They have enough treadmills for everybody to use.... but they're also betting on the fact that not everybody shows up at once, right? This is called overselling, which is a practice which many many many hosts (including DreamHost) participate in. As much as the competition bashes it, it's not that bad because, like at the local gym, not everybody shows up at once, and some people don't even show up at all. Which means that, barring a really really big spike, the YMCA and DreamHost are safe.

A PS is different. A PS is like going to the gym and saying, "Dammit! I want you to make sure that I have my own treadmill here, and that nobody else uses it!" With a PS, you are guaranteed your 408 MHz CPU, and your 408 MB RAM. Nobody else can use it. Let's go back to the personal treadmill example.... your gym says they'll set one aside for you, but it'll cost you a lot more than your regular membership. Would it be practical for them to charge you less if you weren't on your treadmill 24 / 7? Of course not! They still have to power it, maintain it, make sure nobody else touches it, etc. And so, even if you don't use all 408 MHz of your CPU, they're still setting it aside just for you (meaning they aren't overselling), so they can't charge you less or else it would be a really bad deal for them.

Hope this helped,
Eric

SFT_DOM_IP_50 - one EXTRA lifetime domains, 1 lifetime unique ip, $50 off
Also try, SFT_3DOM_50; SFT_DOM_STUFF
Want a custom promo code? The only other viable option is Simple Machines, which I actually prefer. As you can understand, my sie-scripts are protected by IonCube and I need to install it. For this I had to creat custom PHP.ini . I have done everything as it was told in this http://wiki.dreamhost.com/PHP.ini article. I added the line before other extensions. Here is this part:
soap.wsdl_cache_ttl=86400

; Local Variables:
; tab-width: 4
; End:
[ioncube]
zend_extension="/home/sfayrat/rpg-worlds.com/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_5.2.so"
zend_extension="/usr/local/dh/apache/template/phpext/ZendExtensionManager.so"
zend_extension="/usr/local/dh/apache/template/phpext/zend_optimizer5/ZendOptimizer.so"

And I also installed Ioncube to the catalog, which was named higher. I edited .htaccess in both places (in cgi-bin and in root of my domain). But nothing helped. The way to php-info is rpg-worlds.com/phpinfo.php. You can look and see that something is wrong. The support couldn't help me. So I hope that here I'll can find the answer to my question.

In reply to:

since am new here I don't know how this works, could any one help/teach me? and what would the prices be?

How familiar are you with PHP? Most of the web applications like the forums you're planning to run are php applications, and though you don't actually have to write them, you do have to install them.

That said, Dreamhost has what they call a "one-click install" system for us to be able to install some very popular packages into our web space without knowing anything about installing software.

That said, the packages are pretty easy to install for the computer-literate. :)

At any rate, here are my recommendations:
1. Look around here at the questions people have about their websites. Look at the questions relating to any problems people have with uploading static pages (from Dreamweaver, say), or with installing and running phpBB. Note that uploading manually actually seems to be more straightforward than uploading from an integrated editor (who would have known?).
2. Look at the "Getting Started" page of the Dreamhost wiki. There are several topics that you'll find instructive for you. You can definitely ask your questions here on the forums and lots and lots of folks will try to help. I think it's really only the obscure questions that don't get answered. And almost by definition, these obscure questions are ones that the Dreamhost support staff has to and does address.
3. I recommend you create your main domain as a static page (say mikechenkeha.org for example), then do an "easy" one-click install of phpBB for your forum as forums.mikechenkeha.org. The "easy" installs are basically totally maintained by Dreamhost staff so if you can live with the more limited addon and template options, they are the least maintenance. Ironically, they are also the highest performance options as well - supporting the highest traffic.

Use the 3DOM50 promo code for 3 extra lifetime domains and $50 off
More Dreamhost coupons here!

I appreciate your good advice and pleasant attitude michael, really I do agree with you. This cycle and even my blog are very small parts of my life believe me. During the course of my job I discover a new thing and then if I have time I quickly post how to do that thing on my blog. Since my job is a web developer and designer and the company hosts on DH a majority of the thiings I learn are directly related to DH and would be beneficial to other DH customers. Unfortunately a couple of customers with a lot of free time and admin privileges decided to be biased against me and my blog and run a highly successful campaign against me and my blog.. My personal feeling is that they are jealous or frustrated with my clear success, old in a way that makes them hate new or groundbreaking material and ideas, or just plain mean and the type of person who feels good about themselves only by making others feel bad.

Just today I posted a new article on my blog about my experiences migrating to the new DreamHostPS system, and it would have been nice to update the wiki article with a couple things I've learned and the shell script I wrote but I can't do that now. That pisses me off as I was unarguably and irrefutably wrongly banned from the wiki, permanently, for no violation whatsoever, no broken rules.. its completely absurd. For one thing there is not supposed to be any permanent bans, and banning me at all was entirely and completely personally motivated and hurts the other dreamhost customers to the detriment of the wiki.

These people should NOT be allowed to break the rules just because they dislike someone for personal reasons. I have never before encountered an admin of such a large site with so little regard to proper admin behavior. But why should they if DH lets them do whatever they want and break whatever rules they want as long as they provide ANY justification.. no matter how slim, biased, and flat out wrong the justification is. The very fact that I was permanently banned without cause for personal reasons to the detriment of the entire wiki and base of DH customers is enough to permanently remove admin privileges from these people immediately. That type of clear violation of the spirit of the wiki and such obvious abuse of power would NOT be tolerated on any proper wiki. One of the reasons why this would not be tolerated is because of the result: ME!

I'm not going to stop warning the net about what has happened to me until DreamHost fixes the situation by doing what is fair and right by published rules and guidelines. Apparently they ignore these small disagreements because they sure have ignored this one. I feel like letting people know about what is going on is charity. I may already have saved a bunch of people from experiencing what happened to me and that makes it worth it.

I think about the php5 installation shell script I spent countless hours on almost every time I ssh into my account, which is pretty much daily, and it reminds me how incredibly unfair banning my account was and makes me think about how many people will never have the chance to use my php5 install script and countless other contributions to the wiki I could make.

I will always think it was unfair and wrong to revoke my rewards account and disqualify my win for DHSOTM, but I let those things go because they are issues I don't care very much about. This is such an obvious abuse of power and a violation of not only the wiki guidelines but also the spirit and purpose of the wiki. Such a lack of justice on the part of DH is making me wonder if anyone actually works there or if the whole company is automated now, or worse, run by suits.

_____

_ _| _ _ _ _|_ _
(_|_\|<(_||_)(_|(_| |(/_
|

 :~

I've recently relocated to the DreamHost private server setup, not for any reason other than its such a cool offer by DH, albeit pretty darn expensive compared to the shared hosting setup. Here are some problems I experienced and the solutions.

No crontabs or cronjobs

None of my crontab files were moved to my new server and in fact I was receiving permission denied just to access my crontab.

Solution

I contacted support and they installed new crontabs for me and offered to copy my old ones.

Static IP Changed for site with non-DreamHost DNS

For the most part this didn't cause to many errors. But one site uses DNS from a different provider, so my site was down until I updated the DNS with that provider. It would have been nice and should be expected that in this situation DreamHost would alert you that the change is going to happen so you can update your DNS.

References to old server and old static IP's not updated

Some of my sites and user accounts use passwordless SSH to make some things work, and all of these were broken until I made new keys and set them all up.

I have some pretty technical and complex sites, cgi's, and .htaccess setups on some of my sites, and many of my files contain code to use ssh or scp to login to another user account on a different server. And some of my files contain references to the Static IP and/or dreamhost server. When both the Static IP and dreamhost server changed it broke all my files. The solution I came up with was I wrote a simple shell script that I can run from the root of my user account using SSH that searches all of my sites files for references to my old Static IP and old dreamhost server and 1 by 1 asks me if I'd like to replace them with the newer IP and dreamhost server.

#!/bin/bash

shopt -s extglob

renice 19 $$

OLDSERVER=208.113.183.103
NEWSERVER=208.113.134.190
FIXFILES=$(grep -R -l -i $OLDSERVER $HOME/!(Maildir|logs|backups|source|tmp|doit|php5|php526|ip_abuse) 2>/dev/null)

for thefile in ${FIXFILES[@]}; do
if [ -f "$thefile" ]; then
echo -e "\n\n\n\n"
echo "___________________________________________________________________"
echo "Name: ${thefile}"
echo "Type: $(command file -b ${thefile})"
echo "Size: $(command du -hs ${thefile}|awk '{ print $1}')"
echo "Matching Lines:"
grep -i --color=auto $OLDSERVER $thefile
echo -e "___________________________________________________________________\n"

echo -en "Replace occurances of $OLDSERVER with $NEWSERVER?
