With impressive steering and handling and a nimble, maneuverable feel that's better than most softened, numbed appliances its size, the Fiesta is securely on the fun-to-drive side of the ledger. The narrow body and tight backseat whittle down its usefulness for long road trips, too, though we like the added versatility of the hatchback models. Then there's the Fiesta's instrument-panel layout, which clumps audio controls into an odd array of slanted buttons.

For 2013, Ford has rejiggered the Fiesta into three trims and consolidated some of the goodies into a lower number of builds. What that means is that you'll likely get an even better value for the money. With the Fiesta S starting at just $13,995, you get air conditioning and a 40-watt sound system with aux-input and four speakers. Add a Convenience Package and you can get keyless entry and an upgraded sound system even on that model. Next up is the SE, which adds keyless entry, power windows, Ford's Sync hands-free connectivity system, steering-wheel audio controls, a trip computer, and upgraded sound. At the price of top Titanium models, which start at around $18k, you could have a Focus, or maybe a '12 Fusion, but then you wouldn't get things like its standard painted alloy wheels, extra chrome trim, LED running lamps, heated mirrors, heated leather seats, push-button start, and an ambient lighting system. Remote start is optional, and several sport appearance packages can add some spice to the look.

Camry-inspired Toyota RAV4 prototype caught

Aside from its shiny new EV counterpart, there hasn't been much happening in the world of the Toyota RAV4. That's set to change, though, as these spy shots indicate that a refreshed model isn't too far down the pipeline.

Just how refreshed will it be? Well, considering the fact that the RAV4's last major redesign took place six years ago, we hope that there are some significant changes under all of that camouflage. We can already see some new design elements, including a front fascia that reminds us of what we see on the new Camry. Arguably, the current RAV4 is a pretty handsome little thing, but with more and more crossovers adding curvy lines, we wouldn't be shocked if this new model gained a dose of rakishness. Well, as much as Toyota can muster, anyway.

Other details remain slim, but expect the interior to get a much-needed update, likely incorporating features like Toyota's Entune infotainment system. Under the hood, four-cylinder engines are likely going to be the driving force, including a rumored hybrid variant, but we won't rule out the inclusion of the automaker's 3.5-liter V6, as well.

The new RAV4 will likely debut later this year in time for the 2013 model year.

Toyota readying Intellitouch touchpad controllers?

"Intellitouch" is the name Toyota will apparently use to refer to a new electronic control scheme it is developing. That's according to Car and Driver, which has spotted the name in a new Toyota trademark application. According to the submission, the name refers to "electronic touch sensitive controllers, sold as an integral part of motor vehicles."

C/D speculates that for Toyota to bother developing a brand name, there must be more to the new gadgets than just touchscreen navigation. In fact, the magazine thinks Toyota is gearing up for Intellitouch to compete with Cadillac's Cue and Ford's MyFordTouch and their capacitive touch switchgear. The control setup could also be similar to the gesture-based touchpad systems already offered by Audi and shortly, by BMW.

Another Toyota trademark filing is for "EBIN," a wireless charging system for personal electronics. While inductive chargers have been around for a while, several automakers are rushing to include them in upcoming models. General Motors recently trademarked the name, "Dockspot" for its version.

Toyota sales rebound to reclaim spot as world's largest automaker

Toyota has pushed ahead of General Motors and Volkswagen as the world's largest automaker in the first half of 2012.

According to a new Bloomberg report, the 4.9 million units sold by the Japanese automaker in the first six months of 2012 represents an impressive 34-percent jump. Toyota's sales beat out GM by 300,000 units and VW by 520,000.

Still, The General's sales were up 2.9 percent to 4.67 million vehicles sold, while Volkswagen moved 4.45 units, an 8.9 percent increase. While Toyota has enjoyed success in its top markets, North America and Japan, GM and VW have struggled with the economic crisis in Europe.

The Japanese automaker was able to accomplish this even in the wake of the disastrous tsunami in its home market and flooding that occurred in Thailand. According to IHS Automotive market analyst Rebecca Lindland, the strong start may be followed by a downturn in momentum: "they are still restocking dealerships, pulling in consumers who may have waited... but that positive impact will trail off as the year progresses."

Toyota previously took the top spot as the largest global automaker from GM back in 2008 amidst the American financial crisis, but General Motors reclaimed that title in the wake of Japan's natural disasters.

Mazda piggybacks on Ford Escape recall with 215,000 Tribute models of its own

A day after Ford issued a recall of 485,000 Escape crossovers from its 2001-2004 model years, Mazda has reportedly issued its own for the 215,000 examples of its Tribute, the Escape's mechanical twin. While it's the same engine configuration being recalled, the 3.0-liter V6 with cruise control, there is a difference in the recalls: Mazda is recalling 2002-2006 and 2008 model year Tributes, three more years of production than the Escape (the Tribute wasn't made in 2007).
The problem is a lack of clearance between the engine cover and the cruise control cable, which can prevent the driver from letting off the throttle if the cruise control is on. The situation was caused by a repair for a different recall in 2005. Mazda says the engine cover is similar enough to warrant inclusion for all years of production it has cited. It isn't known yet if Ford will expand its own recall.

Will Ford turn to aluminum for body of next F-150? Maybe.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Ford intends to utilize aluminum for the body of its next-generation F-150. In order to meet tightening fuel economy regulations, the WSJ says Ford will turn to the lightweight material, which could cut curb weight by a whopping 700 pounds. Working in tandem with more efficient powertrains, that weight loss could result in a whopping 25-percent boost in fuel economy.

But not so fast, suggests spokesman Said Deep. In regards to the reported aluminumization of the F-Series, Deep tells The Detroit News that "It is premature to discuss specific approaches or solutions that we might use for future product," a quote, we note, that is not necessarily an outright denial.

Industry analyst Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics points out that while some F-150 components are already aluminum, it is also a tougher material to work with. "Full-aluminum structured vehicles are much more expensive to insure because they are much more expensive to repair." Not only that, Hall notes, but not every body shop knows how to work with aluminum. Thus, it's unsurprising to learn that the original WSJ report suggests only that the next F-150's bodywork may be rendered in aluminum, not the chassis.

While there may be manufacturing hurdles in switching over to aluminum, perhaps more difficult will be determining its impact on sales. The F-150 is one of the industry's perennial best-selling vehicles, and it's uncertain how diehard truck buyers might react to a move away from steel, particularly if it sends costs upwards. Of course, Ford recently took on another pickup buyer taboo and registered a resounding victory – challenging the long-held notion that full-size buyers won't buy anything other than a V8 in real volume.

Toyota dumps four-cylinder Sienna for 2013, details other MY changes

The four-cylinder Toyota Sienna is officially a thing of the past. Toyota has opted to ditch the minivan's entry-level 2.7-liter engine, thereby making the 266-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 standard equipment. The move makes some sense, as the entry-level four cylinder didn't really manage better fuel economy – the 187-hp powertrain managed 19 miles per gallon city and 24 highway, whereas the V6 gets 18/25.

Buyers can look forward to a few small changes for the 2013 model year, including easier-to-clean fabrics on LE trim as well as an eight-way power adjustable driver's seat and four-way power passenger throne. LE guise also delivers three-zone climate control with individual control for the driver, passenger and rear seats. Stepping up to Limited trim will net consumers a standard Blind Spot Monitor, though the tech may also be had on SE and XLE versions as an individual option.

Prices have jumped up a bit, starting with the base Sienna at $25,450, or $1,390 more than the 2012 model. Toyota says that on average, prices have increased by around $466 over all trims. The Toyota Sienna family van offers enhanced value for 2013 with new additions in most model grades. The four-cylinder engine has been discontinued, leaving the popular 266 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 as the sole powertrain choice. The roomy and versatile Sienna remains the only vehicle in its class to offer an all-wheel drive option.

For the 2013 model year, most grades of the Sienna gain new amenities and refinements. The popular LE grade adds easy-clean fabric seats throughout, along with a new eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar support and a four-way power front passenger seat, and a three-zone automatic climate control system. The climate control system features a cabin air filter, along with individual temperature settings for the driver, front passenger and rear seat passengers. The rear passengers have a separate digital control panel.

The 2013 Sienna Limited gains a standard Blind Spot Monitor, and this feature is now also available as a standalone option on the SE and XLE grades.

The Sienna base MSRP will range from $26,450 for the Sienna grade seven-passenger with a six-speed automatic transmission to $41,240 for the Sienna all-wheel-drive Limited seven-passenger all-wheel-drive with a six-speed automatic. A look inside Ford's PDC employee-only car show

One might reasonably assume that people who work in automotive design or engineering are automatically car guys and gals, but in our experience, that isn't always the case. The best way to tell isn't by looking at what they are working on – it's by looking at what they have parked in their own garages. And judging by Ford's annual internal Product Development Center Employee Truck & Car Show in Dearborn, the Blue Oval isn't just overrun with serious car nuts; the company's ranks not only have lots of respect for the fast and beautiful, they have a surprisingly deep appreciation for the off-the-wall, the misunderstood, the maligned and the orphaned.
While technically open to the entire company, Ford officials tell us this annual PDC show is primarily composed of designers' and engineers' vehicles, both present and retired. As one might reasonably expect, this year's crop of about 400 cars included a superabundance of Mustang models, but the thing that surprised us about the show was the sheer variety of vehicles displayed – both in era and manufacturer. Ford as a company was obviously well represented, but employees clearly maintain a love for all marques from all countries. Plenty of General Motors and Chrysler cars were parked on the lawn, along with small-volume oddities from companies like DKW, Citroën, Lancia, Triumph and so on. There were even a few bikes and farm implements on display. Condition ran the gamut, from low-mileage timewarp cars to rough and ready daily drivers, and we saw everything from barn finds to drag cars, hot rods and off-road rigs.
Friday's event was the show's 12th annual installment, and this year's featured class centered on station wagons, of which about 50 were included. Everything from real classic woody wagons to humdrum 1980s kinshleppers, disco-era barges and shooting brakes made the scene.
What were we most impressed by? An absence of trailers. While there were a few lurking around the show's periphery, it looked like the handful of vehicles that arrived on them weren't street legal. The vast majority of the cars and trucks on display weren't the sort of collectible that gets trailered to and from shows, only to be hermetically sealed and sparingly driven upon its return home. Owners told us over and over that they drove their cars to the show. That, as much as anything else we saw, is cause for celebration.

Toyota to build Yaris in France for North America

Toyota has already made it abundantly clear the company intends to scale back production in Japan in an attempt to combat the ever-strengthening Yen, and now it looks as if we know one of the ways the automaker plans to do so. Toyota has announced it will manufacture U.S. and Canadian-spec Yaris models in its Onnaing-Valenciennes facility in France. The plant has been producing the Yaris hatchback for European buyers since 2001, though this marks the first time in Toyota history that the automaker has built a vehicle in Europe and imported the model to the States.

North American-spec Yaris models differ slightly from their European counterparts. In addition to using different fascia designs front and rear, the NA model comes available with an automatic transmission and a market-specific 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. There is some differentiation in safety equipment between the two models as well.
Japanese automakers have recently revealed that building cars in Japan and exporting them around the globe is quickly becoming a money-losing proposition. Honda has made it clear the company is seeking alternatives to producing models like the Fit and CR-Z in Japan due to the high costs associated with exporting the vehicles.

Ford recalling 485,000 2001-04 Escapes to fix unintended acceleration threat

It was just last week that the 2013 Ford Escape suffered two separate recalls mere days apart, and today, we have news of a third.
This latest recall affects 485,000 2001-2004 Escapes with the 3.0-liter V6 engine and cruise control. These vehicles could experience unintended acceleration caused by their cruise control cable interfering with the throttle cable when the cruise is engaged. The potential interference between the two cables was not present when these vehicles left the factory, but rather was introduced later by repair procedures for another recall.
Ford originally recalled these Escapes in December 2004 to address an accelerator cable assembly defect. After discovering that its repair procedure could cause new problems, the automaker updated the repair procedure in October 2005. By that time, however, The Detroit News reports that 320,000 Escapes had already been fixed using the old procedure and their owners were never notified of the potential damage that was caused.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reports of 99 incidents alleging unintended acceleration in 2001-2004 Ford Escapes, as well as its mechanical twin at the time, the Mazda Tribute. Of those, 13 crashes and nine injuries were reported. In January, a 17-year-old died in Arizona while driving a 2002 Ford Escape that had been repaired before the updated repair procedure was available.
Ford's decision to implement this recall comes a week after the automaker was called out by the consumer group Center for Auto Safety to dispense with any investigation and recall the vehicles immediately. Vehicle Make / Model:

Summary:
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 Escape vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 engines and speed control manufactured from October 22, 1999, through January 23, 2004. Inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. This risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used.
Consequence:
A stuck throttle may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop or slow the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Remedy:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles by increasing the engine cover clearance, free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on, or before, August 6, 2012. Remedy parts are expected to be available in mid-August 2012. TMG emerging as Toyota's version of AMG?

Toyota is getting serious about building performance versions of its current models. The manufacturer hopes to turn Toyota Motorsport GmbH, the crew behind the Toyota Le Mans effort and the automaker's now defunct Formula One team, into a factory-backed tuner. TMG currently handles almost everything motorsport related for Toyota with the exception of engine building, and the group is currently hard at work on what could develop into a World Rally Championship entry in the near future.

TMG is shooting for a WRC debut in 2014 with a turbocharged 1.6-liter Yaris, and buyers will be able to purchase an FIA version of the model for around €25,000. According to Yoshiaki Kinoshita, president of TMG, the organization will also prepare high-performance versions of Lexus vehicles. That helps explain the Lexus LS460 TMG Edition our photographers spotted at the Nürburgring last year. When asked about the LS460, Kinoshita said every part of the vehicle had been substantially reworked by his team, including the engine, suspension and bodywork. The model could be confirmed for production in as little as six to nine months.

The efficiency offered by the new hybrid model will help the all-new premium mid-size sedan achieve excellent fuel economy with an EPA-rating of 40 mpg combined.

In addition to offering a hybrid powertrain, the new Avalon features a stunning design, improved dynamic performance, a greater degree of refinement, and a highly spacious, comfortable interior experience with an abundance of outstanding convenience technologies.

Powerful, Efficient V6 Engine
The 2013 Avalon will feature a proven 3.5-liter, DOHC V6 engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle, which has been enhanced to offer more responsive and efficient performance. The all-aluminum six-cylinder engine will produce 268 horsepower and 248 lbs. ft. of torque, which will propel the new sedan to 60 mph in under seven seconds. Compared to the previous-generation Avalon, this 2013 powertrain combination offers improved fuel economy, performance, superior shift feel and response, with upgraded drivability and quietness.

This enhanced powertrain's programming has been updated to offer ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT Modes. The ECO mode prioritizes fuel efficiency by reducing power application at lower speeds and reducing energy consumed by the air-conditioning system. The SPORT Mode provides increased acceleration responses though altered engine control unit (ECU) programming, and it offers a more direct and responsive EPS programming to enhance steering feel.

In addition, the new transaxle is equipped with a numerically lower differential gear drive ratio (3.23), designed to help improve fuel economy. The V6-powered 2013 Avalon achieves an EPA-rated 25 mpg combined (21 city/ 31 hwy).

The transmission operation has been made more efficient and responsive with the adoption of a flex-start control feature lock-up clutch. With lock-up control, the transmission's torque converter fully engages at a lower RPM during standing starts to improve acceleration response and help suppress unnecessary engine revolutions. The new transmission is also kept at an optimal temperature with an automatic-transmission fluid warmer, helping enhance efficiency.

The multi-mode automatic transmission console shifter offers a D range and can be moved into an S-mode gate, which allows manually operated sequential shifting using the console shifter or available (Touring and Limited models) steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The gear can be selected by moving the shifter up to (+) position or lower using the (-) position to experience highly responsive shifts. By using the paddles or in S-range, the transmission uses a quick responding shift-logic that includes throttle blipping for downshifts. The gear changes and range-of-gear selections are displayed in the color multi-information display.

For consumers seeking a premium mid-size sedan with excellent fuel economy ratings and an environmental message, the new Avalon features a full power-split hybrid system. Coupled with reductions in vehicle weight and improvements in aerodynamics, the Avalon Hybrid is expects to achieve impressive fuel economy ratings. The 2013 Avalon incorporates the latest advances in Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, building upon Toyota's 14 years of hybrid-development experience. Should GM and Ford give up on selling cars in Europe?

The economic turmoil, lack of consumer confidence and howls for "More austerity!" in Europe have delivered a UFC-like beating to every automaker's books. And with some analysts still wondering if the current euro zone will even survive, it is obvious that it won't be over soon. But is that a reason for both General Motors and Ford to stop doing business on the continent, as Automotive News Editor-in-Chief for Europe Luca Ciferri has written?
The quick summary of Ciferri's reasons for suggesting GM and Ford pull out is that "Europe is the biggest trouble spot in GM's and Ford's global empires and could prevent both from sustaining their current success." Both are losing money there, are likely to lose money for a while, and have other profitable ventures they could focus on in China and a resurgent U.S. – and at least one analyst agrees with the suggestion.
Spefically, GM, via its Opel/Vauxhall subsidiary, has lost more than $15 billion in Europe over the past 13 years, $747 million of it in 2011 alone. Opel's current state remains so dire that GM CEO Dan Akerson calls it a "four-alarm fire" and there's another comprehensive restructuring being presented this week, following last year's comprehensive restructuring that was meant to fix the same issues. A commentary in Ward's Auto posits that perhaps short-lived GM CEO Fritz Henderson was right to want to get rid of Opel and is owed an apology. The best that GM can say about the position in Europe right now is that "it appears to be bottoming out," but Greece returning to the drachma or another large dose of pain in Spain could put the lie to that assessment. For Ciferri, the drag right now on profitable earnings elsewhere and the murky future might not be worth the trouble.
Ciferri's case for a Ford exit seems a little pressed, even though the company is estimating a half-billion dollar loss in Europe this year. Growth and margins are on the downswing, Volkswagen rules the roost and that isn't likely to change soon, and the Blue Oval owns a factory in Romania that is producing the upcoming B-Max, but because it was bought when markets were humming it is now adding to Ford's European overcapacity. Nevertheless, every automaker is dealing with losses, negative growth and slim margins, Ford has been profitable there six of the past eight years, is still number two in Europe and builds some of the most popular cars on The Continent. GM is determined to weather the storm, but in Ford's case it seems more like it would be foolish not to.
On top of all of that, having two major industrial concerns – both are in the top five in sales – tell already hard-put European governments, workers and buyers, "We're going home now, call us when things get better. Good luck," would practically ensure neither GM nor Ford would earn another euro until everyone involved was making cars in heaven.

Bellwether California market sees share growth for Detroit automakers

Ask any sales and marketing executive from Chrysler, Ford or General Motors what their company's greatest challenge is and they will unequivocally reply, "California." The Golden State accounts for 12.5 percent of all new car sales in the United States, but even more importantly, it is seen as a bellwether for the nation. As the home of the entertainment and consumer electronics industries, California has an outsized reach into our nation's popular culture – but Californians have historically been among the least receptive to domestic products.

There's some evidence that trend may be changing, as domestic market share has been improving in the recent years, according to Forbes. Ford has seen its Blue Oval brand improve from seven percent in 2008 to over nine percent last year. Chevrolet topped six percent last year after three years of growth. Even Chrysler, which had a market share of less than four percent in 2010, has seen growth – to five percent in 2011 and almost six percent so far this year.

Still, those numbers are a pittance compared to the import brands. According to The Detroit News, domestic automakers have a combined 30.8 percent share in California, well below their 44.3 percent national average. The domestics' recent growth in California – the Japanese and Korean manufacturers' "home turf" – has certainly been helped by supply shortages at Honda and Toyota, companies beset by natural disasters last year.

If domestic automakers are going to continue to take share from foreign competition, they're going to have to have more success stories like the recent surge in Chevrolet Volt sales, a phenomenon spurred by the availability of High Occupancy Vehicle lane stickers for GM's plug-in hybrid. There's also an inevitable demographic shift that could benefit Detroit, as domestic-hating Baby Boomers give way to younger buyers with no memory of Detroit's dark decades in the 1970s and 1980s.

Ford to exceed EcoBoost target by 100,000 units

Like almost every other automaker these days, Ford is having a tough time in Europe right now, and here in the States, its per-share stock price is lagging, but that isn't stopping the automaker from exceeding some of its goals. The Detroit Free Press reports that sales of the company's EcoBoost turbocharged and direct-injected engines are going beyond expectations. The Blue Oval's signature powerplants have made it to a wide variety of Ford and Lincoln products, from larger vehicles like the Explorer, Taurus and MKT to smaller models like the new Escape and Focus ST.

In fact, Ford is reportedly on track to sell 1.6 million of these forced-induction vehicles in 2013 – a full 100,000 units more than it had previously estimated.

The smaller, more efficient EcoBoost powerplants will make the Ford lineup more efficient and a program to cut down the amount of platforms the automaker uses globally is helping to trim costs. Ford product development chief Raj Nair claims that the automaker is on track to clip its platforms from 22 in 2011 to 10 by 2017. The move should save Ford hundreds of millions of dollars as platform costs drop as scale increases.

BMW, Toyota mulling expansive partnership

In December of 2011, BMW and Toyota signed an agreement to collaborate on lithium-ion battery development, and the deal included a provision where BMW would small-displacement diesel engines for Toyota products sold in Europe. It was brought up at the time that the partnership could expand further, and seven months later, it apparently has: Reuters reports the two companies "have now agreed several projects" in "other fields of cooperation."
The Reuters report, based on an article in Germany's Der Spiegel, said there were no more specifics but that the two company CEOS would make an announcement "in the near future." A story in Germany's Manager magazine went further, however, citing the same Der Spiegel piece and saying that BMW and Toyota would form an alliance around "joint projects in hybrid technology, fuel cells, vehicle electronics" and lightweight technology.
The announcement isn't surprising – BMW's move into the small, lightweight hybrid space with its forthcoming i sub-brand gives it all the reason to save R&D dollars by teaming up with the company considered the world's green auto leader, and the rumored expansion topics could help replace BMW's partnership with Peugeot, on the rocks ever since the French firm tied up with General Motors' Opel division. We'll know more when an official announcement is made.

24 Hours of Le Mans delivers something old, something new

If you don't want to know who finished where in the 80th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, then you should head to another post this instant...
With Peugeot's withdrawal from the world's greatest endurance race, everyone was looking to the rookie Toyota team and its two petrol-hybrid TS030 race cars to provide some kind of worthy competition for the two diesel-hybrid Audi R18 e-tron quattros and two Audi diesel R18 Ultras. And they did. Five hours from the drop of the green flag, Nicolas Lapierre in the No. 7 Toyota passed Benoit Treluyer in the No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro on track to take the lead.
At almost the same time, Anthony Davidson in the No. 8 Toyota was getting launched into the air when a GT Pro-class Ferrari turned into him heading into Mulsanne Corner. Both drivers had massive impacts with the tire barrier, ending their races, and Davidson is now lying in the hospital with two fractured vertebra. Worse yet, the second Toyota had fallen to second due to a pit stop during the safety car period, and on the restart it crashed into the Nissan DeltaWing. That DeltaWing's race was ended after a solid run in its experimental class – its biggest issue appeared to be that other drivers couldn't see it. The Toyota returned to the pits for repairs and got back on track, but retired with engine failure about 12 hours in.

That left the four Audis to box for the victory, and they took the boxing seriously, making contact with tire walls, with other cars and with each other before the No. 1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro driven by last year's winners Treluyer, Andre Lotterer and Marcel Fassler took the win, the first Le Mans win by a hybrid-powered car. Second was the No. 2 R18 e-tron quattro of "Mr. Le Mans" Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Dindo Capello, then the two diesel-powered R18 ultras in third and fifth. Nicolas Prost, son of four-time F1 champion Alain Prost, took fourth in a Lola Toyota, breaking up the Audi family.

The LMP2 class win was snagged by Ryan Dalziel in an HPD-Honda, pursued heavily by the Oreca-Nissan team. Giancarlo Fisichella took the AF Corse Ferrari F458 Italia to victory in the GT Pro class after having crashed the car so badly on Wednesday that the team had to start the race at the back of the pack; the GT Am Corvettes were beset by mechanical trouble and on-track incidents. Redemption for the home team came from Pedro Lamy in the Labre Corvette C6.R, who claimed GT Am honors ahead of the Imsa Porsche team.

Best-selling cars of April 2012

Sales slowed for the top U.S. automakers last month, as six of the 10 best-selling models went to Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda. Left Lane News points out that the only domestic models to make it into the top 10 were the Chevrolet Malibu and the Ford Fusion.

Kicking Tires blames the slower turnout on a narrower incentive gap, as rising prices brought up transaction prices for new cars, as well as the fact that since April spanned five weekends this year, buyers had three fewer days to shop for cars than the same month last year.

Here were the top 10 best sellers for April:

1. Ford F-Series (47,453 units)

2. Toyota Camry (36,820 units)

3. Honda Accord (35,385 units)

4. Chevrolet Silverado (30,749 units)

5. Toyota Prius (25,168 units - includes Prius c and Prius v)

9. Chevrolet Malibu (21,906 units)

10. Ford Fusion (21,610 units)

Notably, in other news from April’s U.S. sales reports, the Volkswagen Jetta was the top-selling European car at 16,659 units, and the Chevrolet Volt sold significantly more (1,462) than the Nissan Leaf (370).

Rounding out the top 15 best-selling cars for the month were the Ram pickup (21, 126), the Hyundai Sonata (20,521), the Ford Focus (19,425), the Chevrolet Equinox (18,282), and the Chevrolet Cruze (18,205).

Toyota racer Anthony Davidson's terrifying airborne crash at Le Mans

The LMP1 racer standing on its nose is the No. 8 Toyota TS030 driven by Anthony Davidson, having just recently begun his driving stint and only five hours into the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while the red car next to it is the No. 81 AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia driven by Piergiuseppe Perrazini. Davidson took the inside line down the Mulsanne Straight, and based on the vantage point in the video, it looks like Davidson had got a decent chunk of the Toyota ahead of the Ferrari when Perrazini turned into him.
The result were hard runs into the tire wall and the end of the race for both drivers. Davidson got out on his own but was sent to the hospital for observation until Monday morning, but thankfully Toyota has released a statement saying Davidson shows "no signs of any injuries." However, reports indicate Davidson has fractured two vertebra, and he soon tweeted from the hospital "Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn't what I had in mind at this stage in the race..."
The safety car came out while the accident was cleared, but the Toyota team's woes were compounded when the No. 7 TS030 driven by Kazuki Nakajima drove into the Nissan DeltaWing of Satoshi Motoyama on the restart. The contact sent the DeltaWing into the wall (and despite efforts to revive it, out of the race) and the No. 7 Toyota headed back to the pits for repairs and a steep drop down the order. As of this writing, Audi's brace of R18 E-Tron Quattro racers appear to have the inside track on a victory.

Companies sign MoU aimed at collaboration in four fields of technology
Tokyo/Munich. Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), met today with Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, at BMW Group headquarters in Munich to announce the planned expansion of their existing cooperation initiated in December last year. The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at long-term strategic collaboration in four fields: joint development of a fuel cell system, joint development of architecture and components for a future sports vehicle, collaboration on powertrain electrification and joint research and development on lightweight technologies.
Also today, Norbert Reithofer and Akio Toyoda of TMC both signed a Joint Statement to reconfirm their companies' shared intention to strengthen the long-term, strategic collaboration between them.
Reithofer said: "We aim to further strengthen our competitive position in sustainable future technologies. We signed an MoU to this effect today. Toyota and the BMW Group share the same strategic vision of sustainable individual future mobility. Together we have a great opportunity to continue leading our industry through this transformation."
Toyoda added: "BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars. We respect each other. And I think this is shown by our taking the next step only six months since the signing of our initial agreement. Toyota is strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells. On the other hand, I believe BMW's strength is in developing sports cars. I am excited to think of the cars that will result from this relationship."
In March 2012, the BMW Group and TMC signed a binding agreement on collaborative research in the field of next-generation lithium-ion battery cells. In addition, the BMW Group and Toyota Motor Europe entered into a contract under which the BMW Group will supply highly-efficient 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre diesel engines to Toyota Motor Europe, starting in 2014.
Today's MoU represents the companies' agreement in December last year to identify and discuss other possible collaborative projects.

Bad news for those high-end luxury cars that debuted at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit: The all-new Ford Fusion stole the show. With its surprisingly good looks (think Aston Martin meets BMW), the midpriced American four-door is poised to knock those other midsize sedans down a notch or two.

Shedding stereotypes of the econo-box, the 2013 Ford Fusion employs refined, sophisticated design, good enough to win the EyesOn Design award for best production car, an accolade bestowed during the Detroit show by a panel of judges that's a veritable who's-who of the car design biz.

Fusion chief designer Darrell Behmer and his team aimed to amplify a sporty look with a wider grille, wraparound headlamps and flowing, connected lines. The interior design team went for a clean and simple layout, with elements borrowed from watch design and modern architecture.

Competing in a crowded midsize market, the 2013 Ford Fusion will continue to go up against old standbys such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. But more recent players in the game such as the Hyundai Sonata and Chevrolet Malibu are also gaining ground in a segment once dominated by uninspired, Japanese-built appliances.

As notable as its looks, the 2013 Fusion will come in a variety of powertrains, from gasoline to hybrid to plugin. The base engine will be the same naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder currently used in the outgoing generation, good for 170 horsepower.

Two turbocharged power plants will be optional: a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine that will make 179 hp with early fuel economy estimates of 26 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, or a 2.0-liter EcoBoost motor that makes 237 hp and 250 pound-feet of torque. The latter, designed to be a sportier version, will be outfitted with a rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

A gas-electric hybrid version of the 2013 Ford Fusion will also be available, which will bundle the 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack for an estimated fuel economy rating of 47 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway.

A plug-in hybrid, dubbed the Fusion Energi, will also use the 2.0-liter engine and electric motor for 185 combined hp and more that Ford reps say will beat the Chevrolet Volt of the forthcoming Prius Hybrid in terms of fuel efficiency.

Safety and technology advances abound in the Fusion. Electric-assist power steering comes standard, and other options include a lane departure warning system, adaptive cruise control and active park assist. The 2013 Fusion also uses the latest generation of MyFord Touch, with a myriad of voice-activated functions and infotainment options.

Pricing hasn't been announced, but expect the base 2013 Ford Fusion to start in the low $20,000s. Judging by its competitors, we figure the Energi plug-in hybrid model could start upwards of $30,000. Expect the new Fusion to hit dealerships this fall.
