Choosing the right material for your cabinets we believe is crucial for longevity. Those kitchen or bathroom cabinets look great on the outside, but what about their inner structures? Does it matter whether they are made of particle board or plywood? There are many reasons why we have decided only to use plywood. We at Dreamline believe in giving our customers a quality product, that they will be happy with for many many years to come.

On the whole, kitchen and bathroom cabinet boxes entirely constructed of plywood are sturdier, more durable, and hold veneer better than particle board cabinet boxes. If all other factors are equal, plywood cabinets are best. Many shops will tell you that particle board is ok, and it is true that they are cheaper, but cheaper in what sense? It is true that right now you might choose those cabinets and spend less money but what about 10yrs down the road? You will have to replace them because they will start to fall apart, while plywood cabinets will not have that issue.

A very good example is like this. Lets say your kitchen will cost you $10,000 for particle board cabinets, while the price for plywood would be $13,500. In 10 years you will spend another $10,000 for same kitchen, while the plywood cabinets would still be in great condition.

Cabinet Construction—Boxes and Fronts

Kitchen and bathroom cabinets can be divided into two elements: boxes and fronts. For example, a kitchen cabinet base with no doors, fixtures, or countertop is a box. A kitchen wall cabinet (the type of cabinet that hangs from the wall) without fixtures and doors is also a box. Were only talking about the structure of the box.

Fronts are an entirely different matter. Doors and drawer fronts are the veneered decorative face that you see, the part that most people are concerned with. Common front styles are Shaker and slab and popular veneered wood species are cherry or oak. Below this hardwood veneer front is a plywood base. The other interchangeable elements are the decorative veneered side panels, which typically match the veneered fronts. For framed cabinets, the exposed vertical stiles (vertical sections) and rails (horizontal sections) may be veneered or may be solid hardwood. We at Dreamline typically use solid hardwood for our framed cabinets, as its more durable.

Boxes are the true heart of cabinet systems.

Particle Board vs. Plywood

Cabinet boxes are structural, and thus need to be strong. And this is where particle board and plywood come into play. Particle board, will be stable as long as it remains dry and is not subjected to undue stress. As long as it remains veneered, either with wood or thermofoil, it can perform well for many years to come.

The type of plywood used for cabinets is not the cheap plywood used for sheathing and construction projects. Cabinet-grade plywood often has twice the number of plies, better lamination, and a smoother finish. It cuts cleanly, with little splintering or damage. Cabinet-grade plywood tends to be 3/4-inch thick and may be veneered on one side with inexpensive wood, such as birch. Plywood cabinet boxes are lighter than particle board boxes. This makes them easier to install for wall cabinets, where high lifting is required.

Cabinet Costs and Availability

Generally, cabinets made from particle board will be cheaper than those made with plywood. Because particle board is cheaper to manufacture, cabinet boxes made from this material tend to cost less, but as mentioned above, it’s not necessarily cheaper in the long run. We recommend all of our clients to choose plywood boxes for their cabinets as they will last much longer, able to take more stress, and dont get ruined by liquids.

Thank you for your time, and choose the right material for your Cabinets

A Rise from the Ashes

Every so often we have a great privilege of meeting a business owner that truly lights a great

impression in our eyes. Recently I have had the pleasure to start working with an owner just like

that.

My name is Mike Markin and recently I’ve started a venture with Dreamline Inc. A local Cabinet

and fine furniture Manufacturer. I have worked for multiple different construction businesses

but this one was quite different than the others I’ve worked with. What really make the

difference was the Business owner, Roman Vasilchuk. Almost everyone I met who knew him,

had only the best things to say about him, his integrity and his goals were very visible.

Roman has a very interesting background, which I believe is the reason he runs the business the

way he does.

Roman immigrated at a young age from Moldova, he worked multiple different jobs which the

last was a small Cabinet shop. Roman continued to progress and develop from worker to

actually one day purchasing 50% of the company. Roman explained “at certain times my boss

couldn’t pay us, he told me to stay at home but I told him id still come in, and to pay me when

he could”. Literally this guy worked for free. A very prominent business entrepreneur named

Gary Vaynerchuk was asked a question in an interview I saw one time on YouTube, “How

should I work if I am only getting paid $10 an hr.?”. Gary replied “I would work the same as I

would for $10 as I would for 1 million”. That is exactly the mindset I see in Roman as Gary often

talks about. I’ve noticed the hard work that Roman puts in at his shop, first one there, last one

to leave. At home he dedicates a lot of time for his wife and kids, Gives attention to his

employees, An treating his customers with respect and integrity. Never raising his prices to

match his competitors, never downgrading the quality of his cabinets.

Just like any average small business in our local area of Portland, OR. Business can be tough,

and bad things can happen. In 2017 Dreamline had an unexpected fire which destroyed all their

equipment, and put it out of business for a few months. Fortunately, with a positive attitude,

Roman saw this as an opportunity to come out even stronger than before. Purchasing more

CNC machines, upgrading their tools, creating a positive atmosphere, hiring salesmen, working

closer with them, Dreamline was able to “RISE FROM THE ASHES” and become better.

What really caught my attention was when Dreamline was down for business, Roman asked

other cabinet shops If they’d be able to take care of his clients. Sending numerous shops

designs of the work needed to be performed. Some quotes were outstanding, other quotes

absolutely outrageous. Using material which is cheaper and charging quite more, literally

ripping customers who don’t know better off. At that point, Dreamline decided to educate the

community to be able to question their contractors, and hold them accountable.

Roman strives to help others through his work. Bringing top quality Cabinets to every home in

Vancouver. Purchases that will last a lifetime of the home, without digging a massive hole in the

pocket. Roman says “Even though others do it, doesn’t mean we have to. Morally we have an

obligation to be fair to our customers. We cover our costs, pay our guys and in return give the

best deal possible to our customers.”. Romans words are words to live by. We challenge every

contractor to think within themselves, and provide a fair, honest, quality job, to our

community.

We look forward to help anyone with their questions on fine furniture and cabinetry. We invite

our community to come visit our Facebook page. A page where others are able to learn some

tips, tricks, and information on choosing the right cabinet for their home. Making a right choice

will make everything different with longevity of it and durability it has in the time of use. We

educate our community starting from choosing the right material, all the way to the hardware

used. You don’t have to choose us for your cabinets, we want you to choose the right ones for

you!
