NFL Game Recap of Week 1

2012-09-12T19:09:00.000-05:00

With the first week of the National Football League over here are my game recaps. Some teams had Wonderful Dreams, while others had Horrible Nightmares.

49ers defense bullies the Packers, win by 12. 30-22.

Cowboys surprise everyone including the Giants with a victory by 7. Romo starts the season off hot with 3 TD’s

Bears welcomes Colts rookie QB Andrew Luck to the league with a 20 point beat down. Bears 41 Colts 21.

Even with 4 interceptions, Browns find away to lose against the Eagles 16-17. Vick stop trying so hard let the game come to you.

Lions will be exciting to watch all season. Stafford’s only TD was the game winner against the Rams 27-23.

Same ol same ol with the Patriots. Titans didn’t show up…preseason is over right? 34-13 Patriots.

Falcons soar by the Chiefs thanks to Ryan’s 4 TD’s 40-24.

Is Adrian Peterson back? sure hope so for the Vikings which stole a victory in OT against the Jaguars 26-23.

It must be the last name; yep my last name is Griffin too. Robert Griffin III produce ‘un-rookie’ like numbers 320 yds and 2 TD’s to push the Redskins past Brees, Saints 40-32.

Jets didn’t show much in the preseason. They saved it all for the beat down of the Bills 48-28. Sanchez 3 TD’s great start J-E-T-S.

AFC Super Bowl favorites Texans had the Dolphins out to dry by half-time, and finished them off 30-10 Lead by Foster 2 TD’s.

Cardinals Kolb has been on this block before stepping in for an injured QB, Skelton, to pull out a 4 point victory over the upstart Seahawks, Russell Wilson 20-16.

Turnovers will not result in victories. Panthers Cam Newton must learn that. 2 INT’s cost them the victory against the Buccaneers 10-16.

What a Broncos debut! Elway who? Ok moving too fast maybe, but Payton Manning throws his 400^th career TD and Broncos win 31-19 over the Steelers.

Ravens have Defense but, Offense WHAT!? Yes totaling 44 points. Bengals was no match only mustering up 13 points.

Raiders cut back on their mistakes and this could have been a different outcome. Nevertheless, Chargers win 22-14.

“Mr. Baseball” in Milwaukee

2012-09-05T17:08:00.001-05:00

In the world of sports one of the highest honors one can get is a statue. In baseball Milwaukee, believe it or not, has one of the richest histories. Until the most recent years my home team, Milwaukee Brewers, might not have been in conversations with playoffs or World Series year after year. But one thing for sure, that has been a consistent is the voice of the Milwaukee Brewers. BobUecker! Mr. Baseball himself.

Other Brewers icons like Henry Aaron, Bud Selig, and Robin Yount all have been immortalized with a statue of their very own outside Miller Park. Mr. Uecker has brought a unique style and a witty sense of humor for 41-years while delivering the game of baseball to the ears of Brewers fans around the world. Some might think its long overdue for him to land a statue, but it’s here now, alone side those others Brewers icons.

Mr. Uecker took his act to late night television. He had countless appearances on Johnny Carson “The Tonight Show” talking baseball, mostly joking about his career. By the way his career batting average of .200 is nothing to preach about. This statue is for what he did for the culture of baseball in Milwaukee, not for his playing days.

I know most would ask can someone who sits and brings America’s favorite past-time to life get such an honor. I look to my 90 year old grandmother who has followed the Brewers as long as I can recall. She once said “I’m a Baseball fan, I’m a Brewer fan first, and that Uecker is something special we’re lucky to have him”.

It’s Uecker who has me saying “Get up! Get up! Get Outta here! Gone!” every time I see a homerun in any ball park. This has me thinking how awesome would it be to hear Mr. Baseball call MLB All-Star home run derby.

Brownsville, Brooklyn to Broadway Staring Tyson

2012-08-23T16:59:00.001-05:00

Spike Lee. Mike Tyson. Yes, Mr.’ Do the Right Thing’ and Mr. Eccentric join forces to displace the life and times of the former champ. The legendary Packer’s Coach Vince Lombardi, NBA Hall of Famers Bird and Magic careers have also hit the bright lights of Broadway. Now for the main event, for pure entertainment if nothing else, Broadway will host ‘The Undisputed Truth’ one-man show staring Mike Tyson playing his self. I can’t think of any one better for such a complex role.

The play will take Tyson fans down memory lane of his boxing success and his life struggles. It will introduce newer fans to how he ran havoc in and out the boxing ring. No one did it better (50-6 44KO’s). With Spike Lee managing all production, I’m sure it will have a dark yet colorful feeling of Tyson’s world.

I once thought he didn’t fight anyone in their prime, silly me, while he climbed the boxing ranks. Well I was wrong. Tyson not only climbed the boxing ranks, he changed the boxing world forever. I call him Mr. Pay-Per-View. When his fights came on you didn’t move an inch. Those fights could be over within seconds, 21 seconds to be exact just ask Marvis Frazier the son of Joe ‘Smokin’ Frazier. Those fights only left me craving for more, not fights just longer fights.

Tyson still has that I’ll kick your ass persona and anyone with a tattoo on their face should right? However, Tyson has a sense of humor that is unmatchable. See the movie Hangover I & II. When ask by Rolling Stone how he would like to improve the ‘The Undisputed Truth’, Tyson said “it may seem weird or wimpy, but I want to have some quick dance acts in there. I’d love to sing, but I can’t. Maybe I’ll get the guts one day”. I’m not sure what Tyson will wear during the play but the black shorts, black shoes, and no socks would be a KO of a job to catch his in the ring boxing image.

Olympics Stars

2012-08-09T16:10:00.000-05:00

Gold.

Gabby Douglas. Michael Phelps. Missy Franklin has brought me more reason to cheer for the USA in these 2012 Olympics games then years prior. The anticipation of seeing their greatness was my carrot. Not even the USA Men’s Basketball team with Kobe, Lebron, and Melo was enough to get my attention to follow the Olympics, more on them later. I love when the Olympics Games roll around every four years. It reintroduces the world to sports that most wouldn’t regularly watch. The games bring the best storylines and dreams for a life time.

Sliver.

Another part of the Olympics excitement is the track and field events. They are filled with stunning athletes, but my eyes and yours too will be on one runner Usain Bolt. Bolt repeating as the 100m gold medal winner was a daunting task, which he did, in doing so he broke his own World Record. Breaking the World Record with a time of 9.63seconds Bolt has truly become the face, fastest, and flamboyant personality of the Olympics games.

Bronze.

Now back to the USA Men’s Basketball team and their quest for gold. I love watching the best of what the NBA has to offer on one team. My desire is that the NBA All-Star game would take on an Olympic feel. Where the fans vote for 10 USA born players and have them go up against 10 Foreign NBA players. Sorry, I digress. Much was made of this Olympic team, and how they would fair against the Original Dream Team with Bird, Magic, and Jordan. My thoughts on who would win this Dream game which has been the talk of these Olympic Games, rightly so, because clearly I know Kobe, Lebron, and Melo will win the gold.

My take on this Dream game…

Athleticism- goes to Kobe, Lebron and Melo

Skill- goes to Bird, Magic and Jordan

Intangible- goes Kobe, Lebron and Melo.

Coaching- I must go with Chuck Daly and his coaching staff. So who would be my winner in a single game with Olympics format is…to be continue let the great debate live on.

Owners, spending money on the right players

2012-08-08T10:32:00.000-05:00

NBA players like Nicolas Batum of Portland Trailblazers, Brook Lopez of the Brooklyn Nets, and Omer Asik of the Chicago Bulls all received contract extensions stretching from 3-years and $25.1 million up to 4-years and $61 millions. No wonder why NBA fans are asking why this past summer NBA lockout had to happen.

NBA owners are first to yell they aren’t making money. Well with deals like that I can clearly see why they are not. However, after a second glance at the new CBA contacts like the one Brook Lopez received aren’t the problem. It was those maximum contracts; players received and not live up to.

The new CBA is working for at least one big spenders like the New York Knicks, who opt not to match the offer sheet (3-years $25million…$15million in the last year) from the Houston Rockets for raising star Jeremy Lin. Before this new CBA I’m sure the Knicks would have match it without question. Now only if teams like the Milwaukee Bucks can find a way to sign a ‘big name’ free agent to make them more competitive, I’ll love this new CBA even more.

At the end of the day, fans want to see improvement in competition and owners want to see profit. Can both things happen? I know only a small percent of teams should think championship or failure, but am I asking too much for teams to think of a winning season or playoffs year in and year out?

Going After The Best

2012-07-13T12:22:00.000-05:00

Check out how Cleveland Cavaliers young star Kyrie Irving goes after Kobe. I'm sure this isn't the first time a young star has trash talk Kobe. The best line of the interaction is when Kobe compares Irving to Lil Bow Wow.

The Pursuit for #6

2012-05-22T16:14:00.002-05:00

The pursuit for six has it gone to far? Or is it more appropriate to ask is the pursuit to be like Mike too extreme? Kobe Bryant is the ultimate competitor and I’m sure the past few years the way he and the Lakers exited the playoffs don’t sit well with him.

In his last ditch effort to save the Lakers season, Kobe dropped 42 points, against Kevin Durant and Thunder. Granted it wasn’t enough but tell me the last time someone with the mileage he has put in, did that outside Jordan himself?

Like that line in Gladiators which was used by Jay-Z in his song “What more can I say”

“Are you not entertained, are you not entertained, is this not why you’re here” Kobe is a pure entertainer. Finishing his 16^th season and handing out numbers (27.9 points-per-game) like he does isn’t suppose to happen according to past NBA legends who try to accomplish what he has.

Just think back to his first playoff performance against Utah Jazz when Kobe, only a kid, shot two air-balls in the final minutes of the game. How many current NBA players could come back from something like that? Or even take the shot!

What current player has an ambition to be great like him? My other question is has his legacy been tainted by his most recent early playoff exits?

Kobe hasn’t had too many major struggles to overcome a team like Jordon did with the Pistons or another player like Magic had Bird. So for me to see him not in the NBA Finals, or even the Western Conference Finals, is still surprising and Laker’s fans might have to get comfortable with if front office doesn’t make changes soon!

I must let you in on a little secret. I wasn’t a fan of Kobe in his early years. Yep, I said it! I thought he was talented enough to be his own person and tried too hard to me like Jordan. Now that I’m much wiser I understand why. I’m sure there is some little kid, maybe my son, who is in the backyard or local playground trying to perfect Kobe’s moves the same way Kobe perfected Jordan’s moves.

Without question Kobe Bryant will go down as one of the Los Angeles Lakers greats, next to Magic, Kareem, Jerry “the logo” West, and Shaq. Until next time live out your DREAMS with some Determination, put forth Real Efforts and given your Abilities; Mean you will have Success.

The Pedigree for a Championship

2012-05-09T16:05:00.000-05:00

When was the last time a defending champion got swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs?

When the seeding came out for this year playoffs, seeing Oklahoma City matched up against Dallas I got extra hype. After their series last year and their regular season battles this year, playoffs match had all the right story lines. Dirk vs. Durant. Champions vs. up and coming Challengers; Experience vs. very little experience.

Well, it didn’t take long for the Thunder to show the world what they learned last year by losing to the Mavericks. In fact, I’m sure the Mavericks didn’t expect a Thunder-storm that loud and it resulting in them being swept. By the way it’s the first in Mavericks franchise history being swept.

The Thunder was down 13-points entering the fourth quarter, of game four this past Saturday night, and then the storm began. The lighting fast (James) Harden took the game over beard and all. His 15 of 29 points came in that period and the thunder soon followed.

Can you say passing of the torch?

In most recent years the NBA champion has a current make-up to their roster. A bone-a-fide superstar, a number two, that on a non-playoff team would be the number one star, a bruiser caliber type player, a wildcard player and a bench. There’s only a few of teams that meet that description. Heat. Lakers. And the Thunder.

The Thunder have it all Kevin Durant (bond-a-fide superstar), Westbrooks (number two), Perkins (bruiser), and James Harden (wildcard) who was the driving force in the come from behind close out game against the Mavs. There framework seems to be perfect not to mention their superstar is far from an ego head case. At this point I can’t see any reason why they won’t come out the West, or even walk away with the title come June, bar any major injury.

Mayweather weathers the Cotto storm

2012-05-06T21:04:00.000-05:00

Despite what you may think or how you feel about Floyd “Money” Mayweather you can’t ignore or discredited what he his accomplish over his career (43-0). His latest challenge, might have been his toughest, against Miguel Cotto it was a good old fashion boxing match. Mayweather had to deal with a busted lip, a first; a bloody nose, also a first; and a persistent Cotto to win a unanimous-decision.

With that victory Mayweather adds another title to his long list of title belts. Mayweather has collected eight belts with this being the most impressive. I’ll be the first to say I was impressed by his skills to take a punch or two. Granted, there wasn’t too many because his defensive was truly amazing. The only scare came in the fifth round when Cotto, a future Hall of Famer, connected on a few punches that cut Mayweathers lip, and blooded his nose. Cotto supporters had reason to cheer however, it was short lived.

Mayweather doesn’t shy away from the spotlight and with that he has no problem talking about his earnings. For an example in this fight Saturday against Cotto “Money” Mayweather was guaranteed $32 million just for the fight, not to mention what he will earn from the pay-per-view numbers. My guess he will earn in the neighborhood of $50 million, no wonder why he goes by money.

With all that money and those title belts Mayweather at 35 years-old has contemplated walking away from it all. When asked about it after the fight Mayweather said “more like 80-20”, I’ve been feeling that even before this fight”. Outside the ring he has a battle he can’t block. He is due to serve-out a short jail sentence from a domestic abuse case from his old girl friend. Let’s hope that his fire to fight doesn’t burn out when he returns from jail.

One person will be waiting for him.

Poor Pujols...

2012-05-03T12:26:00.000-05:00

So answer me this; what should a Los Angeles Angels fan expect to see from a their $240 million man?

Or, how about this question, how long as a fan do you allow a player to struggle who makes $240 million?

Well Los Angeles Angels, Albert Pujols is far from living the DREAM it’s more like a nightmare. Pujols went the entire month of April without sending one over the fence. That was 92 at-bats over 23 games. For the two-time World Series champion this drought is the longest of his Hall of Fame career.

When the Angels signed him away from the St. Louis Cardinals I’m quite sure they didn’t expect a drought at this level. Pujols offense slumps are rubbing off on his new teammates as well. With a record of 8-15 no one in the batting order is worth highlighting.

Pujols said “I’ve been doing it for 12 years, so I know my hitting. Only God knows my swing better than me. When you’re going through things like this, you’ve got to be careful who you listen to, because you have so many hitting coaches”

Well I hope he locates his swing soon and put up numbers like most has come to anticipated him to do.

Kenny Anderson!!!

College basketball was a point guard game back in the glory days, when players stayed more than just one year; some might argue that it's still a point guard game. One thing is for sure Georgia Tech’s Kenny Anderson was GREAT! Well, I came across his 50 point outburst against Loyola Mayrmount. Those days I truly miss there were soooo many great college players…

Oh and yes, I added the “Hurley shuffle” for all my younger readers. Enjoy!

The People's Elbow NBA style...

2012-04-23T11:29:00.000-05:00

Brutal! Extreme! Unwarranted! and distasteful. Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest) gave Oklahoma City Thunder’s James Harden an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) elbow to the head after a dunk and began to celebrate. Take a look at the video for yourself and determine if the celebration, was a really a celebration.

So after watching the video one can only wonder how many games World Peace will be suspended for an elbow like that. My guess would be at least 5 games, which will end his regular season and a game or two in the Lakers first round of the playoffs.

Here is what World Peace had to say when asked about the elbow...

“On that play, I just dunked on Durant and Ibaka, and I got really emotional, really excited. And it was unfortunate that James had to get hit with unintentional elbow. I hope he’s OK. The Thunder, they’re playing for a championship this year. So I really hope he’s OK, and I apologize to the Thunder and to James Harden. Such a great game, and it was unfortunate so much emotion was going on at that time”

World Peace history doesn’t favor him in a situation like this when it comes to physical interaction I know you recall the “Brawl in the Palace”. I relate this elbow to the “The Punch” that change Rudy Tomjanovich face by Kermit Washington. After a slow start to the season with the lock-out, then Jeremy Lin was the story, and now it will be World Peace’s elbow. I really hope that the Playoffs give us a new story line!

After 1,098 victories, 18 Final Fours, 8 national titles and 16 SEC tournament titles Pat Summitt steps down as head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols women’s basketball coach. What does this mean to Tennessee women’s college basketball program? Who will fill Coach Summitt’s shoes; will this be the end of a great program? Only time will tell. After 38 years Pat Summitt was the brand for Tennessee women basketball. As the old saying goes you never know what a great thing you have until it’s gone. Sadly, Tennessee basketball program, and its university, will experience this first hand.

Even with battling ‘early-onset Alzheimer, Summitt continued to coach, and the Lady Vols completed another great season and a berth in the NCAA Elite Eight. No wonder why she has been name National coach of the year seven times! Its Summitt’s willpower and passion for coaching that sets her aside from others.

In a statement to the university Summitt stated “I’ve loved being the head coach at Tennessee for 38 years, but I recognize that the time has come to move into the future and to step into a new role” during a recent interview. As a result it will be hard not to think Tennessee’s women’s basketball without thinking about Patt Summitt. Even though she won’t be on the sideline leading the Lady Vols, her impact as a leader will continue to be a force at Tennessee and women’s sports across the world of college athletics. She’s a true pioneer for women’s college sports and will be truly missed by Lady Vols fans and more.
