Late last year when I reviewed OCZ’s Agility 4 SSD, their Vertex series was still the highest performing model they offered. The Vertex offered both speed and IOPS that managed to just slightly outdo the Agility series. In what feels like a short time since that review, OCZ’s SSD lineup has re-worked considerably; putting the Vertex as their middle end drive, dropping out the Agility 4 all together, and introducing a new Vector line as the king of the hill high performer. The...
Passive (fanless) CPU coolers aren’t anything new to the market and have been around for many, many years. When passive CPU coolers first started to hit the market the CPUs that were around at that time ran much hotter than they do today which didn’t make these coolers a great choice for gaming systems or demanding applications. With newer CPUs using less power and creating less heat than ever before, now is becoming prime time for passive CPU coolers to really shine and be used in...
As we have seen lately, there’s quite an interesting trend happening in the enthusiast PC cases market. Most definitely you can get a premium case with great features and awesome design… for $100. But when it comes to low cost cases in the range of $30-$35, it used to be that the options available were not impressive… not at all. Recent releases in that segment are quite the opposite though. Leading PC cases manufacturers are enhancing their Entry Level offerings are built...
Phanteks is a relatively new player to the thermal solutions game. Founded in 2007 by a group of engineers paired with a Dutch design team, Phanteks has two goals in mind “high-end quality and innovative products in thermal solutions.” Despite being a young company, Phanteks has already had much success in the overclocking and high-end thermal solutions markets. They continuously pursue excellence in thermal solutions so that they can develop and bring satisfaction to the...
I am sure that there’s no PC enthusiast on this planet that hasn’t at least heard of Noctua NF-S12 fans. The 1st generation of these quiet case fans was released back in 2006 and quickly became the industry standard. Noctua CEO points out that the NF-S12 was the cornerstone for the company to be known as one of the leading players on this market. In 2009, the NF-S12B series was announced as the 2nd generation of NF-S12 series. As expected, it was better than 1st generation NF-S12...
PC Power & Cooling first debuted their 'Silencer' line of power supplies over six years ago. Since then, the Silencer name has not died off, but has continued to evolve through their MK II and the latest MK III variant of this series. The original release of the Silencer MK III series came last year, but more recently PC Power & Cooling has done another round of revisions on this series which introduced some notable upgrades. Energy efficiency was taken from an 80PLUS Bronze...
One of the unique design traits to SilverStone's modular power supplies is that they're fully modular. Where as most manufacturers will hard wire the mandatory cables, usually the motherboard, EPS/ATX and one PCIE connector, SilverStone has opted to make even those cables removable. Their reasoning behind this design choice is well justified though; they have a variety of after market cable options that can do everything from giving you short cables for small form factor cases, or...
Our introduction with Fractal Design was with their Define R3 case - a review that just came out shortly before todays. With the Define R3, I was pleasantly surprised at how much innovation Fractal Design provided in designing the case. It was a case of astoundingly great quality; with the results of their hard work showing in the final product.

Other than the increasing drive towards higher 80PLUS certifications, lower noise, and modular cables, we haven't seen many other great changes...
Over the last while I've really started to think about where the traditional computer is headed. Facts are showing that laptop and tablet sales are far surpassing sales of the traditional desktop and fewer and fewer homes even have a desktop anymore to begin with. I myself have also shifted a lot of my day-to-day work to my laptop as well. One thing that all these portable devices lack is screen space. These devices are convenient to move about with, but when it comes time to get down to...
