medicine (CAM) is the term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard care. Standard care is what medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy and allied health professionals, such as registered nurses and physical therapists, practice. Alternative medicine means treatments that you use instead of standard ones. Complementary medicine means nonstandard treatments that you use along with standard ones.

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/Dreddycliniccom-project-ComplementaryAndAlternativeMedicinecamBlog" />
<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com/" /><feedburner:emailServiceId xmlns:feedburner="http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0">Dreddycliniccom-project-ComplementaryAndAlternativeMedicinecamBlog</feedburner:emailServiceId><feedburner:feedburnerHostname xmlns:feedburner="http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0">http://feedburner.google.com</feedburner:feedburnerHostname>

Broccoli, Cabbage, Other Veggies May Protect Against Colon Cancer

(HealthDay News) -- Eating fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some colorectal cancers, according to a new study.

Austrailian researchers examined the diets of 918 colorectal cancer patients and 1,021 people with no history of the disease and found that consumption of certain vegetables and fruits were associated with a decreased risk of cancer in the proximal and distal colon -- that is, the upper and lower portions of the colon.

Consumption of brassica vegetables (also known as cole crops) such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower, turnips and cabbage, for example, appeared to reduce the risk of cancer in the upper colon, while both total fruit and vegetable intake (and total vegetable intake alone) reduced the risk of cancer in the lower colon.

They also found that eating more apples and dark, yellow vegetables was linked with a significantly reduced risk of lower colon cancer. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Arsenic shows promise as treatment for deadly brain tumors

Arsenic and its related compounds are mostly thought of as killers -- and these natural substances can be just that. Notoriously poisonous to myriad forms of life, arsenic is often used in pesticides. And water supplies in many parts of the world that are contaminated by the natural occurrence of arsenic compounds can cause serious health problems. But despite it's reputation as a dangerous chemical, arsenic has been used in tiny amounts in medicine for over 2,000 years. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

Ginger Supplements Might Ease Inflammation Linked to Colon Cancer

(HealthDay News) -- A small, preliminary study finds that ginger root supplements seem to reduce inflammation in the intestines -- a potential sign that the pills might reduce the risk of colon cancer.

However, more study needs to be done, and the researchers aren't yet recommending that people head to the supplements' aisle or start gobbling up more ginger at meal times.

"If you want to add ginger to part of a healthy diet, that's great. But you can't make any conclusions about definite health benefits" based on the study findings, said lead author Suzanna M. Zick, a naturopathic physician and research associate professor at University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor.

The study, funded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, was published online Oct. 11 in Cancer Prevention Research.

Ginger, an herb, is found in supplements and in many foods such as ginger snaps and Asian dishes. Research has supported its use to treat stomach problems such as nausea and vomiting; the U.S. National Library of Medicine says it's "likely safe," although some people may develop mild side effects. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Vitamin D and Prostate Cancer Risk

I have had discussions with the top research at the Council for responsible nutrition who informed me that their high level consensus was that up to 10,000 units of Vitamin D is safe for virtually anyone. Now we have a slight cloud on that; however, I think this article clarifies just how slight that "cloud" on Vitamin D Safety really is.

This excellent article from NCI suggests that it is only a very remote possibility that the most aggressive forms of Prostate cancer might be aggravated by Vitamin D. This article, however, concludes with the obvious that the overall benefits from improving Vitamin D status clearly outweigh any such remote possibility. This article also recognizes what I have been teaching for 20 years, which is the incidence of prostate cancer by age 60 is clearly at least 50% and most of those cancers are not linked to the cause of death in those patients. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Preeclampsia Might Protect Against Testicular Cancer

(HealthDay News) -- Pregnant women who experience severe high blood pressure may find that their risky condition ultimately helps protect their sons from testicular cancer, a new study suggests.

The reasons for the possible association remain unclear. However, the study authors theorize one possible chain-reaction explanation, in which the malfunctioning of a pregnant woman's placenta causes blood pressure to rise and/or blood vessels to narrow. This, in turn, leads to a drop in estrogen production, which could lower the risk of testicular cancer for a mother's son.

A similar drop in another pregnancy-related hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin may also play a role, the researchers said.

But whatever the potential link, the researchers stressed that mothers should not be concerned about a reverse association. Women who do not experience high blood pressure while pregnant -- also known as preeclampsia -- will not inadvertently place their sons at increased risk for testicular cancer. Read more...

Ayurstate for Prostate Care

Federal appeals court reinstates corporate ownership over

Federal appeals court reinstates corporate ownership over human genes for breast cancer

Reversing a previous decision by a US District Court that declared gene patenting to be invalid, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) recently ruled in opposition, declaring that certain gene variants are supposedly unnatural and can thus be legally patented by biotechnology companies.

Myriad Genetics and Laboratories, a molecular diagnostics company out of Salt Lake City, Ut., had filed patents for BRCA1 and BRCA2, two genes allegedly linked to predicting breast cancer risk. But new research published in the British Journal of Nutrition has revealed that pairing broccoli with other foods and spices rich in myrosinase, (one of the key anti-cancer compounds found in broccoli) significantly increases the vegetable's cancer-fighting abilities.

Jenna M. Cramer and her colleagues from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's (UIUC) Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition studied and compared the anti-cancer effects of eating broccoli alone, to those exhibited when eating broccoli in combination with other foods rich in myrosinase, an enzyme necessary to convert GRP into SF, without which there would be no way to metabolize SF.

While broccoli alone, particularly when overcooked, contains little or no myrosinase, human digestive enzymes and flora are still capable of converting some the vegetable's GRP into SF. However, when myrosinase-rich foods like broccoli sprouts are added to the mix, the effect is remarkable, as seen with the team's final study results. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Healthy Heart Habits May Also Guard Against Cancer

(HealthDay News) -- People who are diligent about keeping their heart healthy have a good chance of staving off cancer as well, researchers report.

Individuals who don't smoke and who maintain a healthy body-mass index (BMI), normal blood pressure and two to four other "ideal" measures of heart health have a 38 percent lower risk of developing cancer, according to research scheduled for presentation Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association in Orlando, Fla.

The study authors hope the score they've developed will help doctors drive home the message that prevention is key to both cancer and heart disease.

"Physicians need motivation to really push the issue of prevention with patients," said lead author Laura J. Seven things you need to know

If you want to completely eliminate caffeine from your diet, you will have to add green tea to your list of forbidden foods. However, if you merely want to reduce your caffeine intake, you may want to substitute green tea for coffee as your morning pick-me-up beverage. Consider these facts about green tea:

1. As long as the number of cups you drink remains the same, replacing your morning coffee with a cup of green tea will reduce your caffeine intake by about 70%. One cup of coffee contains 100-150mg of caffeine; a cup of green tea has only about 25mg of caffeine. However, there are many variables affecting these numbers. For example, the caffeine content of different types of green tea can vary; also a longer brewing period can result in more strongly caffeinated tea.

2. Green tea contains two other stimulants in addition to caffeine. These substances, theobromine and theophylline, may affect heart rate and the central nervous system in a way somewhat similar to caffeine. These substances are also found in chocolate.

3. The combined stimulant effects of caffeine, theobromine and theophylline in green tea may be balanced by another substance in the tea, the amino acid L-Theanine which simultaneously calms the nervous system and enhances concentration abilities. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Certain Childhood Cancers More Likely to Recur

(HealthDay News) -- Some childhood cancers, particularly Ewing sarcomas and central nervous system tumors, carry the risk of late recurrence, U.S. researchers have found.

The study authors analyzed data from 12,795 five-year survivors of the most common pediatric cancers who were enrolled in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

The researchers found that the overall cancer recurrence rate was 4.4 percent at 10 years and 6.2 percent at 20 years. But if any one member of the community - who may or may not live there, but is registered at an address in the community - is found guilty on any illicit-drugs charge, then the sign would be removed.

On the surface, it sounds like a good idea - empowering local residents with some degree of incentive to police or look after their own. But given the rigidity of our house-registration system, it would be unfair to hold the entire community responsible for the actions of a convicted or alleged drug-user or dealer who is registered in the community but may not necessarily live there. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

How can stress, as a diagnosis made by my GP, be treated?

How can stress, as a diagnosis made by my GP, be treated?
There are four ways to treat stress:
The obvious, most successful, but hardest to achieve, is removing the cause of the stress. If your mortgage repayments are in arrears, winning the Pools will solve your problems and remove the stress, but this is a solution for the minority, not the majority. Marriage stress is probably one of the most difficult forms of stress to remove, as bitterness and wrangling over children and property may last for many years after a divorce. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

Is New Improved Margarine Good for You?

What do you think about Smart Balance margarine which claims it has no trans-fatty acids? Is it healthier?
A: The manufacturer of Smart Balance margarine claims its product contains no hydrogenated oil and no trans fatty acids and therefore should lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol - just the opposite effect of spreads that contain both of these forms of fat.

This is supposed to happen if you limit your intake of dietary fat to 30 percent of daily calories and keep your consumption of dietary cholesterol to under 300 mg per day. In other words, if the fat in your diet is the same blend of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats as in Smart Balance. Incidentally, Smart Balance replaces trans-fatty acids with palm oil, a tropical oil that is 50 percent saturated fat. There's not enough palm oil in Smart Balance to raise cholesterol levels, but it is a saturated fat nonetheless. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

Drinking Raises Cancer Risk for Middle-Age Women

(HealthDay News) - Research involving more than a million middle-age women finds that even moderate drinking raises risks for breast, liver and other cancers.

"Even relatively low levels of drinking -- on the order of one alcoholic drink per day -- increase a woman's risk of developing cancer," said lead researcher Naomi Allen, from the cancer epidemiology unit at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. "Because a high proportion of women drink low amounts of alcohol regularly and because most of the increased risk is for breast cancer, the risk among women associated with drinking alcohol is of particular importance."

In fact, the study found that moderate drinking accounts for 13 percent of breast, liver, rectum and upper respiratory/digestive tract cancers among women.

The association between moderate alcohol intake and breast cancer in women is well-known, the researchers point out. What's new here, they say, is the finding that even low levels of drinking can raise a woman's risk of developing cancer of the liver and rectum. For women who smoke, cancers of the mouth and throat were also linked to high alcohol consumption. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Gene Material Strongly Linked to Heart Disease

(HealthDay News) -- Two research teams have each identified genetic material strongly associated with a significantly increased risk of heart disease.

A test focused on the genetic variants, located on chromosome 9, might identify people at high risk of heart attack. About one in every four Caucasians are thought to carry the gene variants, and a test to spot those at risk could be available by the end of this year, the head of one research group said.

The discoveries are even more interesting, because the same region has recently been strongly implicated in bumping up diabetes risk.

"This is an important finding, because it was replicated in different populations around the world," added Canadian scientist Dr. Ruth McPherson, director of the Ottawa Heart Institute's lipid clinic and lipid research laboratory, who led one research effort.

The two separate reports, published in the online edition of the journal Science, do not pinpoint specific genes. Instead, they cite what are called "single nucleotide polymorphisms" (SNPs) -- slight variations in the sequence of units that make up the molecule of DNA that carries genetic information. Read more...

Immunice for Immune Support

Diet, Exercise Better Than Vitamins in Promoting Health

Harvard men's health watch is telling everyone how dangerous vitamin supplements are. Unfortunately they are not kidding!

Please know that although we have our references to try to refute these statements, your patient's families will be hearing this stuff.

While it was once hoped that supplements of folic acid could help reduce colon cancer, new research has shown that taking more than the minimum daily requirement would be harmful. Simon says other studies underscore the downside to dietary supplements, which are unregulated in the United States. "The most striking example is beta carotene, which we used to be very hopeful about, but actually increases the risk of lung cancer in smokers. Vitamin E increases the risk of second head-neck cancers in people who have been successfully treated for a first malignancy."

The truth is that the folic acid most get in supplements is not the natural form that is called 5'MTHFR (Metafolin by Merck of Germany) and since it is over $12,000 a Kilogram it is not in most supplements. Read more...

Ayurtox for Body Detoxification

Vitamin B6 Tied to Lowered Lung Cancer Risk

(HealthDay News) -- A new study shows that people with high levels of a B vitamin are half as likely as others to develop lung cancer. But while the reduction in risk is significant, this doesn't mean that smokers should hit the vitamin aisle instead of quitting.

While the study links vitamin B6, as well as one amino acid, to fewer cases of lung cancer, it doesn't conclude that consuming the nutrients will reduce the risk. It has been shown that when cells use ketones instead of glucose for energy, glucose is not metabolized. As high glucose metabolism is what causes kidney failure in diabetics, the Mount Sinai researchers theorized that introducing a ketogenic diet would work to block the toxic and very harmful effects of the glucose. Read more...

Cardiofy Heart Care Supplement

Olive oil, green leafy vegetables prevent heart disease

Italian researchers have confirmed that diets rich in leafy green vegetables (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2549) and olive oil are vital for heart health (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=431). Dr. Domenico Palli from the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute in Florence and his colleagues discovered that women who eat at least one serving of leafy greens a day are 46 percent less likely to develop heart disease than women who eat less. And those who consume at least three tablespoons of olive oil a day earn roughly the same benefit.

"Probably the mechanisms responsible for the protective effect of plant-origin foods on cardiovascular diseases involve micronutrients such as folate, antioxidant vitamins and potassium, all present in green leafy vegetables," explained Palli to Reuters Health, confirming what previous studies on the "Mediterranean Diet" have already found. Read more...

AyurGold for Healthy Blood

Fatty Fish May Cut Heart Failure Risk in Men

(HealthDay News) -- Men who consume fatty fish and marine omega-3 fatty acids appear to have a reduced risk of heart failure, a new study has found.

Between 1998 and 2004, U.S. and Swedish researchers followed nearly 40,000 Swedish men, ages 45 to 79, recorded details of their diets and tracking their health outcomes. During that time, 597 men with no history of heart disease or diabetes developed heart failure, and 34 of them died from the disorder.

Men who ate fatty fish -- such as salmon, mackerel, herring, whitefish and char -- once a week were 12 percent less likely to develop heart failure than men who never ate fatty fish. The study also found that men who consumed a moderate amount (about 0.3 grams a day) of omega-3 fatty acids -- found in cod liver oil and other fish oils -- were less likely to develop heart failure than those who consumed little or no omega-3 fatty acids. Read more...
