There were certain looks from Sunday's red carpet that just would not go away! And if you were as inspired by them as I was, they may never go away. I've got 5 of my favorite trends from the best Met Gala looks and RTW looks for this Spring and Summer!

Red

Emma Stone in Lanvin; Hilary Swank in Michael Kors; Jaime King in TopShop

Red was a pretty big deal on the red carpet as it is on any red carpet event. So I wasn't surprised to see it came in many silhouettes from Emma's short and flirty crystal embellished Lanvin Dress to Swanks flowy draped Michael Kors gown.

Red for your closet this Spring and Summer is essential! Its sultry and sexy but also fun and bold.

Metallic Gold

Jessica Pare in L'Wren Scott ; Jessica Alba in Michael Kors; Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe

I was a little caught off guard to see liquid gold as a Spring Trend but not so surprised to see it on the red carpet! Its the perfect compliment to the red velvet. While Jessica Pare and Alba went for hot metallic gold gowns, Karolina kept it soft in her rose hued gold Rachel Zoe dress.

You've already been doing so well keeping it bold in gold, now soften it up with more feminine silhouettes and tiny gold embellishments here and there; studs, metallic toes and jewelry

Tangerine

Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhullier; Katherine McPhee in Elie Saab; Kristen Bell in Tommy Hilfiger

Ginnifer in her Monique Lhullier gown may have won top honor for best dressed at the gala in my book. And like last year, when she rocked kelly green on the same red carpet, Ginnifer picked the trendiest color this year. The beading and leather belt: she certainly does this color justice!

Tangerine orange is must try this summer. If you generally shy away from bright colors but want to give it a try this season, try splashes tangerine in your look. Just try it.

Leather

Rosaria Dawson in Calvin Klein; Shailene Woodley in Christopher Kane; Rihanna in Tom Ford

I guess the matrix leather trends will never really die down. Now we're wearing leather sheath dresses. It maybe a lot for the spring and summer heat but you can certainly wear it in comfortable doses.

Don't forget leather comes in all colors! From red hot reptile, to cool pastel greens and pinks. And for a wittle leather influence, get in on some leather trim action.

Peplum

Solange Knowles in Rachel Roy; Amy Poehler in Fotini; Eva Mendes in Prada

Peplum is the perfect way to upgrade a plain dress, skirt or shirt to flirty and playful. It was one of the biggest trends on the red carpet and one of the biggest trends this Spring.

If you just want a tiny taste of peplum this Spring get a peplum skirt or shirt! Dress it up or down, in bold oranges or reds or soft pastels; in lace or leather... however you want your peplum, have it.

6 EASY Changes I made to Kick Start My Weight Loss

As much as I love The Biggest Loser (its the only show I've watched consistently for 5 years), I have a problem with the attesting to how easy it is to get healthy and then enforcing a incredibly strict diet and workout plan. I mean I get it: their weight issues are far more severe and they're in a competition. But when its just you, no Bob, no Jillian and no Dolvett... is it really that easy to take the dive?

I made a couple of changes to my lifestyle, easy sacrifices, that have been doing me well! So if you're not sure where to start, start here!

1. Get a Calorie Counter
If you have an Apple product (iPod/Pad/Phone), iTunes has a free calorie counter called Lose It! A very important factor in my weight loss but this is not forever. In fact, I currently don't use mine. But it did help me to get an idea of how I was eating in the past and helped me learn to satisfy my apetite on fewer calories. It was with the calorie counter that I started incorporating more produce into my diet.

2. Drink. More. Water.
This seemed hard but it's really not! Once you get the idea of how many calories sugary drinks steal from your budget, you'll learn to drink more water. Once, I took a whole week and just drank water and milk. Surprisingly, I saw a difference in my body without even exercising much. Train yourself to drink at most 2 flavored drinks a day (one of them tea or coffee) and water the rest. Or get a reusable 20 oc water bottle and refill at least once a day.

3. Less Processed Fast Foods
If you're always eating out then be aware of the restaurants that serve the fresher foods. Once I learned about the Pink Slime found in most processed fast food meats, I axed McDonald's out of my diet altogether. That's not easy for some folks and I get that. Instead I opted for places like Five Guys (once in a while) who pride themselves on using fresher products. I also love the Veggie Delights at Subway and avoid the meats! Other restaurants that use fresh ingredients? Chipotle, Baja Fresh, Panera Bread, ABP are just a few of my favorites. I also made smarter decision at the places I visited regularly. I used to order Caramel Macchiatos with extra caramel, until one day the barista called it my "diabetic coma drink" that was enough for me. Iced coffee for me with the occasional fancy drink. I really don't deviate beyond that.
Another important tip: Do your research before hand. Look into the nutritional information before your outing.

4. Don't Punish Yourself!
This is what I feel many weight loss programs or fitness gurus fail to mention. Of course as I strive to eat healthier, I don't want to give up all the foods I like. What I know about myself is that if I give them up completely, I'll eventually binge. So I concentrate on one weakness. I've edged out candy and hostess products (like twinkies) and my only weakness is icecream. My favorite sweet and what I proclaim to be my comfort food! But instead of going to Ben & Jerry's and getting a pint of Americone Dream, I, again, go for a good quality icecream. Talenti Gelato has great flavors and uses the best natural ingredients. Oh and the icecream is uh-mazing (Try the Sea Salt Caramel). Remember, just don't over do it; practice portion control.

5. Develop Little Tricks and Shortcuts
There are certain healthy foods my body metabolizes better than others. For me, oranges are my ideal source of fiber but ah, the fiber comes from the white membrane which I HATE. So instead of peeling the orange, eating it wedge by wedge and peeling off the white stuff (yes I actually did that), I cut it on the equator (not the axis where the navels are), I take each hemisphere and cut them into 1/4ths. I'm left with 8 orange wedges, membranes hidden inside. Other peculiarities to help me eat better: cold milk after a workout (I used to hate milk but ice cold milk is surprisingly refreshing); gala apples with a slice of cheddar cheese makes a yummy and filling snack; my favorite way to make and eat my own salads: mix in some fruit, nuts or herbs but my favorite is definitely cilantro and lemon (with a wittle organic ginger sesame dressing)!

6. Exercise!
Okay, you guys this is where you have to bite the bullet a little bit. I think at least 30 minutes of activity a day is enough to maintain your weight. As you already know I'm a zumba zealot and their 45 minute classes (twice a week) has really made a difference. The days I don't zumba, I walk about 3 miles or do a video of zumba. You'll find that once you get into an exercise routine you like and see results, it'll be easier to get out and go. My plan is to fit one more zumba class into my schedule as well as a pilates or yoga class to strengthen my core.

These were just baby steps for me. You tell me, did it make a difference?

In June, I seemed to be a little heavier than my usual weight but November 2011 was the heaviest I've ever been! According to the scale I'd gained about 17 lbs since my last year of college! I knew I had to get going. An important lesson I learned more recently is that sometimes you can't rely on the scale to gauge your progress. The needle on my scale seems to be broken but the mirror and my body are telling me a totally different story. I am toning up and getting healthier. Whether my weight will follow suit is up to my weight.

I'm not gonna lie, when it comes to doing my own nails, I've got two left hands. But after my last mani chipped away, I just didn't want to go with out a cool new look.

I've had Sally Hansen's Salon Effects Laced Up strips since February and finally got around to using them. I wanted to be a little creative so I decided throw Sally Hansen's Plum's The Word nail into the mix too.

Sally Hansen's Salon Effects, fun but not as easy to use as they make it out to be! For my first try though, not too terrible. I did mess up and lost a strip. I also wondered whether or not a top coat was necessary. It is! A top coat makes a hell of a difference and the colors pop.

I'm totally for getting more Salon Effects designs in the near future. Sally Hansen's Complete Salon Manicure Collection has the best opaque colors. I've already started a collection of my own.

Our favorite pop/country star Taylor Swift always stays true to femininity in her style. Especially in this outfit, Taylor continues to show her singular, clean and simple fashion sense while establishing herself as trend setter.

Taylor's reminded us of a wonderful Spring and Summer trend that's in circulation again! Nautical Stripes. Believe it or not, I've had such trouble getting my hands on anything striped as of late (mostly because my attention is more often than not focused on something I CAN'T have) but this as the warm weather rolls in the options are expanding! So, I undoubtedly will pay extra attention to stripes this Spring and Summer.

Seminar in Aspiration: When Your Calling Backs You Into A Corner

If you know me at all, then you know how fickle I can be; how indecisive and at times not passionate enough. It can be frustrating. I've known myself too often to just let the cards fall where they may and accept it. If the world says I can't be a writer then I guess, I should... be a psychologist or something. If the world says I don't have the goods to put myself on such a public platform and talk about fashion and beauty and self-worth, then I guess... I won't. If this is who you used to know, then even you are surprised that I've stayed so committed to something this long.

As you read on my about page, my dresscapade started when I realized I didn't have to fit the standard to be beautiful. It was just the click of a link that showed me that you don't have to wear hip hugging, short skirts to be beautiful and stylish. The idea for this blog didn't come until months later when I and my best friend, Ara, found ourselves completely bored with our lives. We were tired but way too young to be tired.

Ara went off to Law school last year and this year, I've had to go it alone. In and out of temp jobs, a non-existent social life. This blog however was there collecting dust and funny enough, the more I neglected it, the more stagnant my situation became and more doors closed. Here and there my parents would show--I don't know if "interest" is the word. "When was the last time you posted on your blog?"-But more agressive than this. This question as opposed to "Have you submitted your applications?" "Any leads on your job search?" I was surprised one night when my parents bombarded me with ideas and expectations. I told them my blog was just a thing and nothing more. I was surprised by how frenzied they became. Over my blog? That was the moment when I felt it. This pressure. It was not my parents pressuring me but my dream. How did it find me? I'd packed it up in a box and shipped out a long time ago; shipped it to those bloggers I so admired, the ones who made something out of nothing, the ones with the inherent fashion sense and effortless blogging style.

If the size of your vision for your life isn't intimidating to you, there's a good chance it's insulting to God.

This quote really woke me up. When we say to our parents "Not everyone is capable of that kind of success," thats a slap in their face and in God's. What I've learned in my 24 years, well in my 2 years out of college is that if you're destined for something, it will come and find you. No matter how long you put it off, no matter how far you run from it; it will find you, back you into a corner and demand the love and attention you so desperately want to give it. Don't swing.

Today I turn 24!!! (*nudge* Wish me a Happy Birthday) And what better way to celebrate than with a lovely and thoughtful gift like this one.

Over lunch yesterday, one of my bestest friends in the whole wide world, Catherine gave me a card that read she was on a mission. When I asked what that meant she handed me a box and in it was this gorgeous leather ring. It felt like I was being proposed to! Not only can I count on Catherine to find the most original and usually hand made accessories but she's also very mindful that most standard sized rings don't fit my fingers.

Inside a durable wire perfect for adjusting (and comfortable)

Last year for my birthday, Catherine gave me a one of a kind winged ring with an elastic band. Only those pinch and hurt (Seen here). This year she was (apparently) determined to get me a comfortable ring that would fit me. Mission accomplished.

Beside the color and the comfortable adjustable band, my favorite thing about this ring is the reptile skin detail.

Seminar in Aspiration: Interview Ready

Interviews are your chance to make the very first impression. If you go in there a nervous wreck, completely understandable by the way, sometimes your look can say what your words won't allow. I've always learned clean, straightforward, professional attire will favor you greatly in the interview room. But what about for the fashion forward? Are they supposed to sacrifice their personal flares just to get the job? For some, sacrificing such may mean sacrificing the confidence you'll need for the ~~interrogation~~ interview.

If your fashion sense is inherent then it maybe a little difficult to dial down the expressive qualities in your interview look. When I got this talbots pleated skirt (see below) I was excited to wear it with my denim button down, leopard loafers and color block bag. Sigh. Not for an interview. I opted for the closet staple crisp blue career shirt (courtesy of H&M) but looked for other opportunities to add my own personal fashion touches to the outfit without taking away from the integrity of a pristine professional look.

Sophisticated Touches: H&M Bangle, Urban Outfitters Wrap Watch

I have adjusted this particular outfit to cater to a specific interview situation. At my most recent interview, when I realized I'd be walking through SoHo (I live on Long Island so it would be a long trip), I chucked the heels and went with some leopard print ballet flats (which I found out is totally okay to wear to an interview as I was complimented on them walking into the room). I also wanted to go for fun easy going touches and wore my YOT Watch (in black) instead of my UO wrap watch. I did however feel overdressed. But thats okay! Better to be overdressed than under. And despite knowing the work place calls for a casual dress code, I'd dress just as fancy for a second interview. Nothing wrong with dressing professionally for a position you really want, am I right?

Statement Jewelry I love H&M's accessories section! (But the sadly the rings just don't fit my unusually large fingers). The prices are untouchable. The bangle and the charm bracelet, $5.95 each.

Spring is a time of growth. You spend the rest of the year yearning and striving for greater and greater things, be it school, work, looking for work whatever... Spring is, for me anyway, when you get to reap the benefits of seeds sewn. If this isn't the case, its what you should aspire for. Make Spring a time of determined growth.

So recognizing Spring as a time of growth I made out a list of material, spiritual and mental goals and aspirations for the season--a Spring Wish List if you would. On the list, Lauren by Ralph Lauren Rainboots, a New iPad and (how I miss you) my Poetic Justice Braids. But also on the list? A race to lose 10-15 lbs, to take better care of my natural locks, a bid to grow more spiritually (by getting to Church on time) and a determination to stay in a positive mindset as often as I could bear. A positive outlook, trust me, when things aren't going your way can seem like a burden but it is a burden worth the pain. What a positive outlook will win you is a greater love and respect for yourself and a persistent aspiration to achieve those goals that to the natural eye seem unachievable.

So make a list: everything you want for Spring to help you to grow into yourself, grow to love yourself. And be specific. Put it where you can see it and meditate and pray on it as often as you can. Its a chance to focus on your personal growth after the world spends so much time taking from that.

NOMscapades: Chicken Curry Recipe

My last semester of undergrad, my Fiction class had dinner at the professor's house. She served chicken curry and I was skeptical because everything I ever had that was curried was just so overwhelming to me. It was no secret that I just hated the flavor. I didn't want to be rude so I didn't complain, I took a big helping of salad and a small helping of the curry which she served with rice and peas. It was just about the most divine thing I have ever tasted. So many levels of flavor discovered with every bite: Is that lemon? Lemongrass? Do I know what lemongrass taste like? Wait, coconut? I went back for seconds but... sadly it was gone. When I couldn't stop thinking about it, I was determined to make it myself and after numerous attempts finally perfected a recipe of my own!

Like Kelis' milkshakes my Chicken Curry has my yard to full of takers! I make it for all major parties and celebrations. So as you can imagine I can pretty much make this with my eyes closed and now I can gladly share the recipe with you!

What You'll Need
Boneless, skinless chicken breast
Jamaican Curry Powder (that's what I use anyway)
Fresh Cilantro
2 lemons (and zest!)
Fresh Ginger
Garlic
2 Spanish Onions
Scallions
32 oz carton of Chicken Stock
And/Or Knorr Concentrated Homestyle Chicken Stock
1 can of Coconut Milk
Tomato Paste
Olive Oil
Cinnamon
Black Pepper
Vegetable Maggi Cubes
Crushed Red Pepper
Bay Leaves
Basmati Rice

Total Cooking time: aprx 1 1/2 hrs.

Mise En Place

1. Get out your cutting board, hand grater, chef knife, Saute Pan (5 quart), pot and strainer. As well as wooden spoon(s).

2. Implement Rachel Ray's garbage bowl method to keep your station nice and clean (...don't buy a $20 bowl for garbage. Use what you have)

3. Clear the sink! (You'll need to wash things as you go as well as strain the rice)

Prep

Chicken Rub, Soak Basmati Rice

Chicken Rub:
Fresh Cilantro
2 Garlic Cloves
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1 Tbsp Olive Oil
1/2 lemon juice
1/2 Onion

- Give cilantro and onions a rough chop. Instead of mincing garlic simply grate (it saves time)
- Combine ingredients in a bowl with thawed chicken breasts and mix til coated

After I squeeze the lemon, I like to toss it in there and let it marinade with the chicken

Rice Prep:
2 1/2 cups of Basmati Rice
4 (or more) cups of water

This method I learned from my sister will have the rice ready in 8 minutes! Just soak all the rice in a bowl with water for at least 30 minutes! I do it in the beginning so I don't have to along the way.

Now You're Ready to Cook!

Curry

- Heat 2 tbsp of Olive Oil in pan

- Slice 1 onion and saute until caramelized, then grate 3 garlic cloves and ginger (1 tbsp) into pan, saute

Smell-o-vision would be amazing right now. These 3 ingredients alone will yield the most marvelous aroma ever!

- Slice chicken and add into pan and cook, only slightly

- Add 1 tsp of the jamaican curry and stir.

For juicy chicken, don't cook chicken thoroughly (yet)

Whoops! Forgot the Bay Leaves!

- Add 1 can of coconut milk

- whisk in 1 1/2 tsps of tomato paste and 1/2 tsp of cinnamon

- Add 3/4 of chicken stock, the juice of 1 lemon (careful for the seeds! If cooked they'll get tender but are very bitter), 2 vegetable maggi cubes and bay leaves (which I forgot this time around). Lastly, I like to add a couple of stems of cilantro and fish them out afterwards

- Turn down heat and let simmer for 20 minutes. This allows the flavors to develop and the chicken to cook through.

This is the time to adjust the stew as you see fit. If you want more tomato flavor add more, if you want more lemon add accordingly, more curry or coconut then add. I like mine less on the tomatoey side. This has become a nice balance for me.

Rice

- As your building the stew, bring water : chicken stock, salt and 1 tsp of olive oil to a boil. Or (and this works just as well if not better) use Knorr's Concentrated Homestyle Chicken Stock and melt it in a generous pot of water with salt and olive oil. (The rice should be completely drowning in water. So don't be shy!)

The lemon zest is a very nice surprise!

- Once the water is boiling, remove soaking rice from the water and add to boiling stock/water mixture. It will cook in 8 minutes exactly! So time it!

- While rice is cooking, finely chop cilantro and slice scallions. Also zest 1 lemon (1 tbsp worth)

- Once rice is cooked, strain.

- Into cooked rice add 1 tsp of olive oil, 1/2 tsp of pepper, scallions and cilantro (save some to garnish the curry), lemon zest and toss together

When the rice is done, the curry should be as well. Don't forget to fish out the cilantro stems!

Add the remainder of the scallion and cilantro as garnish AND SERVE!!!

Here's one alternative method I use:

Chicken Breast on the Bone for juicier chicken

- Get 2 large chicken breast on the bone. Marinate as you would the boneless chicken

- Sear both sides and then pull them out and continue the recipe.

- When its time to simmer, put the breast back in and let them cook thoroughly. Cover for quicker results.

- When the stew is complete and the breasts are cooked thoroughly let them rest for a few minutes and then shred the chicken and mix back into the stew

Spring is just about my favorite season (sorry Fall, my former favorite season). Not only will yours truly be celebrating a 24th birthday this spring but she'll have the best duds to celebrate it in! Yes, Spring is by far the season when the trends are the brightest and the fashionable are unstoppable. You can see why I had to displace my affection.

Well, while I've been absent (I do apologize my lovlies), fellow bloggers and trend spotters have been holding down the fort reporting on the best spring trends they've seen so far and I gotta tell you, they've barely punctured the surface. Here are my favorites!

1. Mixing Bold Colored Pieces

I hadn't seen this trend before I saw it on Who What Wear. What a smart way to stay fashionable when you're just too lazy to be creative mixing colors and patterns. I will most certainly be resorting this every chance I can get.

I am determined to get at least 12 cross body bags this spring. You know about my newest one from Francesca's but as this Pattern Rebellion post mentions (pssst! look at the byline) its just about the most convenient and sophisticated and at once casual bag you can wear. I once wore a cross-body bag while bar hopping and promised every time after that to wear one when I'm out.

5. Floral

Well uh duh? But it amazes me how floral trends continue to evolve every spring season. So however obvious it seems to whip out your floral garments for spring, its just as important to invest in some new floral clothes. As I write this blog post a lone tear streams down my face. You see, due to my sheer carelessness and neglect I lost something I once held so close my heart. An inanimate object yes, with no real sentimental value other than the fact that the thing kicked serious ass in its classification... an umbrella. Not just any umbrella, ModCloth's raindrops on railways umbrella: a clear plastic bubble umbrella with the NYC Subway map on it.

See what had happened was... Sometime last year I don't remember the exact date but I had an interview with a company around Union Square, New York. I prepared for rain and brought this wonderful brelly along. Once I got there I was instructed to leave my umbrella in the closet. After what I would call a successful interview, I left the interview without my umbrella in tow. Well, it must've been something in the air because afterwards I'd gone into Urban Outfitters to try on a pair of jeans I had my heart set on and waltzed outta there without my phone! It wasn't until I got onto the LIRR that I realized I'd left my umbrella in the closet... and when I reached for my phone to call them, I realized I'd left my phone somewhere too!!! Poor Brelly and Algernon (that's my phone). Lost and forgotten in a vast city without anyone to claim them.

I was able to take a trip to that same UrbanOutfitters that weekend but the office I interviewed was closed. Phooey. Well I awaited good news from them. Even called and asked when they'd have a decision. I showed the proper amount of interest in the job but also assured myself that I'd see brelly again. She was holding my spot at the job and she'd spend many a rainy days in that closet. Well... I didn't get the job. And I was heartbroken both about not landing a position I was really thrilled about but also never getting to see my umbrella again! I was a bit embarrassed to call and ask for my umbrella because I thought it was a bit petty and unbelievably materialistic to hound a job about something as insignificant as an umbrella. So... I let bygones be bygones and never called back...

In this overcast and rainy season, I can't help but think about what she's doing and who she's comforting now from the rain. I can't help but think about those warm and rainy days I'll spend without her this spring...

My Stance On This Very Controversial Topic

All right, I was stunned to learn there are people actually out there that would argue natural hair isn't for everyone. A statement that when you look at it, not only makes sense but can be quite offensive. How can you say the way God made me is not for me? I was inclined to think along the lines of this well thought out take on the issue. She says instead of saying "natural hair isn't for everyone" substitute natural hair with brown skin. Brown Skin Isn't for Everyone. Just brilliant. That video is a response to the video I'll feature in this post. However, I saw this video with this beautiful young lady and I have to admit I was taken aback by how much of it I agree with.

Like me, Sunshine, wasn't too keen at first on how someone could say something like that. I will admit though, there are people, yes black people, who don't see the beauty in it that others do. I myself have had to fight my own idealistic views on how my hair should look, which Sunshine touches upon, and made the conscious decision after almost two years of being natural to relax my hair. Ouch. That as well upset some people. I even endured some hostility from a hair dresser who argued I didn't take care of my hair and rolled her eyes when I asked her if my twists would drop and I told her I wash my hair with Herbal Essence (which I still do... well co-wash and/or detangle). That was enough in itself to turn me away from going natural. After educating myself on the proper natural hair care (the science of it, styles, products-- and when it comes to products... natural MEANS natural) and developing a tough skin, I decided I had the time to learn about it, to have patience and started my journey ALL over again. It is not easy. Your hair will not always do what you want it to do and that can be a harsh reality to face but I was ready for it.

What I like about Sunshine's argument is that she emphasizes just that: Are you prepared to jump into the ocean of natural hair? So you know, it is not shallow waters. Sunshine focuses on the preparedness of going natural but doesn't discourage it all together. In fact she says she believes there is a day coming when natural hair will be the norm. And what a huge stride forward made for natural hair girls over the weekend when a Black Nominee shamelessly rock her natural hair at the most prestigious Award Ceremony EVER and not to mention at a peak in her career. (*cough* Viola Davis *cough*) I appreciate Sunshine's statement following that, saying, there are the forerunners educating those not in the know of the realities of going natural. It was through them that I learned that natural hair isn't always those gorgeous loose flowing curls you see in the commercials. (oh no, though its achievable.) And then after, I could embrace my natural texture. As long as you're prepared to learn and leave those ideals behind, I would encourage anyone to go natural.

Lastly, Sunshine argues there is a confidence you have to carry with it. It is still not received positively by everyone. I agree wholly, with that. Sometimes it can feel like swimming upstream concerning those not as open minded, your stubborn and ever changing texture and tailoring styles to your professional life.

I think that for anyone, the journey is worth it. But take it at your own pace. Know your texture, know your style, experiment, be confident but most of all be patient.

Over the weekend I got this beautiful color block purse from Francesca's Collections. A very inspired boutiquey one-of-a-kind aesthetic makes them one of my favorite new stores. I prefer however, to go to the actual store than shop online. Anyway, after an interesting conversation with my mom in which she told me a laptop bag, various travel bags, and my lone everyday coach bag (who I call Baby. Make no mistake she is very much loved.) are enough bags to make my bag collection complete, I successfully convinced my mom to purchase this bag for me after retorting "You don't wear your everyday bag to every party you go to, do you?" My mom was a little worried how I'd wear something like this especially it being so bright! Well, that shouldn't be too difficult.

I like the idea of adding a little more gold to compliment the gold in the bag as well as a little more color with this cool blue H&M bangle. Black is an easy neutral to pair anything with. A toy watch gives a subtle nod to the pop colors.

Lastly, leopard print is quickly becoming a neutral for me. If in small doses, it goes beautifully with anything. These, as you probably noticed, are my favorite shoes.

I bet you're noticing... the "middle part" is missing. Um. Because I don't have it yet. Like leopard print, I love polka dots as the new neutral too! To complete this look, I've got my eye on this ModCloth polka dot dress! With a white cardigan to compliment the bright colored purse and bracelet, this outfit would be perfect for a spring graduation season! (I love graduation season if you didn't know)

Many weeks ago, I woke up at 3 AM for some reason thinking about this feather adorned panama hat I ordered from UrbanOutfitters (rawr sold out) which was enroute. I had to jump on the opportunity to get it! UO hats usually go for $30-50 a pop! And here she was first $20 and then $9.99. She was calling to me. What I woke up thinking about however was... how with my big ol' fro am I going to fit this hat on my head? I got on to google and typed in the question and lo and behold, it was youtube with its infinite wisdom to the rescue.

I was sure I'd be up all night bugging myself with an answer to, really, what seemed like a question that no one would bother themselves with. I was shocked to find a solution almost immediately!--How long does a google search take?--Almost immediately as in 0.27 seconds. Gosh, Google could you have taken more time? I found this video from KinkyCurlyCoil with a very clever solution

Just the same, being natural means you've got to get creative because let me tell you, your hair will not always do what you want it to. When the turban thing was big (and I'm sure the trend will recycle this summer) I was looking for a different thing to do with my hair and found this turban tutorial from the beautiful and very eloquent Nikkimae2003 (At the time however, my hair wasn't long enough to rock it with this much finesse)

But there's always something else, right? I'm not huge on makeup. I'll do liquid foundation, occasionally some light eye makeup and more recently a lip color, just like this next vlogger, Laila Jean. I was however, fed up that my eyebrows NEVER looked the same, they were never thick enough, the waxing was just taking its toll and I know NO good threaders in my area. My buddy, Ara, also not huge on makeup, referred me to this video on a brilliant all-over everyday makeup tutorial with a great eyebrow regimen. I was also rather impressed with how well she knows her skin: from having combination skin to having super greasy eyelids! What? I literally touched my eyelids when she said that. I like this video a lot because we kind of have a similar skin type.

Next, I wanted to incorporate a lip color into my simple makeup regimen and the red lip was getting increasingly popular. Well, it's a makeup staple to be honest. I noticed more and more these days, that you can wear a red lip and not much wear not much else which was very appealing to me. The red lip easily fits into the pinup look, the rocker glam look and so much more. SO I went out and got a stick of MAC's Ruby Woo matte red lipstick. I didn't know much about wearing a red lipstick so I did youtube search and found this video from Mochatia915. She also has a lot of smart tips about wearing lip care in general. (I think that she uses a burgundy lipliner for dimension is excellent.)

SideBar: As she said red lipstick can make lip imperfections GLARING. So get into the habit (I'm telling myself too) of using a good lip exfoliant. I like this homemade one from ModCloth.

I get a lot of great tips that I think anyone can use from natural hair vloggers but this last video isn't necessarily from a vlogger and I didn't find it on youtube. Actually I've seen it countless times on Style and can never get over how inspired this idea is. I think you recognize this beauty, Ms. Jeannie Mai.

Speaking of First Loves...

My Junior year in college, I could boast that I'd seen almost every movie nominated for an Academy Award. And if I hadn't seen it, I'd gone to see it the following weeks. I took the scenic route even in the winter, past the watergate and walked along the boardwalk on the water front. The fountain froze mid spill in the winter. Beautiful. It was a must almost every weekend I wasn't doing anything with anyone and one of my joys to get to say during the Oscars Yes, Bravo. You deserve this one.

2009 was the year Ben Button, The Reader, Doubt and Slumdog Millionaire reigned at the Oscars (the year the Dark Knight was unforgivably overlooked). 2010 was the year I rooted for Precious and Up and was thrilled not only to see a woman win in the Best Director but also to see her beat her money hungry ex-husband in almost every category. 2011 I was a bit unprepared but I was sure I'd wanted James Franco or Jesse Eisenberg to win in his category. However, after Colin won, I was suddenly seduced by his eloquence and effortless humor. That was the year Anne Hathaway called out some "Hugh Jackass" (a shining example of a play on words) for not gracing her with his presence during what would have been another memorable Oscar comedic musical performance. 2011 was my best year because even today I can say that I've seen 7 of the 9 movies nominated for best picture and thoroughly enjoyed all of them (and still believe Inception/Nolan/Hans Zimmer was robbed).

2012... I can tell you I've seen The Help and Bridesmaids ... and I don't know is 50/50 nominated for anything? (I'm reading the nominations for the first time as I write this) No. GASP! Jonah Hill nominated for an oscar?! Jessica Chastain (she was definitely one of the strongest in The Help and one of my favorite characters) good for her. Viola and Octavia I knew of. Very well deserved. Kristen Wiig what a talent. Yay. Melissa McCarthy?! Rango. Yes saw it. Nice. Wait, who's hosting?

Having taken four film courses in college, its quite ridiculous that I've lost touch with this passion. While I may not have time to catch all the nominated movies in time for the ceremony Sunday, I do know better that it is the season for movies. So here's what's what, from here to summer, the best comedies, rom-coms and award winning movies will hit the theaters and this time I'm making an effort to see as many as I can! (But I don't do horror flicks) Each month I'll update you with details on my favorite movies. What I liked and what I didn't. Who wore what. Who didn't (if you catch my drift). Getting Back to Your First Love

My life right now, sigh... is uncomfortably still. I'm in wait mode and have been for several months. After leaving a temp job, studying and taking the GRE, applying to graduate programs and trying to kickstart a career, most of the work is done and I'm in the dreaded waiting period. Waiting for grad decisions, waiting for more interviews, waiting for fun, waiting for love, waiting... waiting... waiting... waiting... and more waiting. And with old friends and past mates quickly leaving me behind, it can be a discouraging place to be (to say the least).

Last weekend, I attended a production of Guys and Dolls at my old high school (where today I occasionally sub) and got to see some of my old friends and classmates. It was difficult not having more to say to them than... "I'm waiting (just like I was the last time you saw me)" Whats even more difficult is that not many see the work you put in for the results you're waiting for (wrap your head around that one). They just see what looks like stagnation. Wow. This is getting depressing but I'm getting to it. The truth about this waiting period is that... its not uncommon. In fact, we all wait. And usually covet those in their hour of success not recognizing their period of struggle and stagnation.

So then what now? I had a chance to think about when my life was moving at lightening speed and those tiny pleasures I used to grasp time for: In college, taking time on the weekend, rain or shine, to walk to Borders (RIP) with a good book or an idea for a short story (was a joy); Catching a movie alone just before award season kicked in. Before the real world-- or the realist in me rather--put my dreams in a box, I was inspired to create by any and everything. A lyric inspired a story, a cheeky love movie inspired a choreographic piece, a need inspired the giver in me, even the mere yellowing of the pages of a book inspired a concept on which I'd build a creative piece. Now, I have the time to fall in love with those things again but the motivation has worn off. Its strange, though; I was just thinking about how my creative spirit is not what it used to be, my wit is dissolving and my intellectual stamina... well it's going too. This is when I appreciate those times getting through the impenetrable Ulysses by James Joyce in college which once used to drive me insane. There's a void now where that hidden pleasure once was.

The good news is, once you've recognized a desire to go back to that thing you once loved so much, motivated or not, there's just the matter of encouraging yourself to fall in love again. I'm more determined now than ever, to enrich my life with art, express myself through fiction like I once did--my true first love--and get back into film what with award season coming to a close. I'm even prepared to take on the challenge of reading Ulysses without help!
