Paul Zollo captured these images of Leonard Cohen and Anjani at a cafe on Pico Boulevard on February 26, 2007 and graciously agreed to the shots being reposted here.

Paul Zollo also wrote From Songwriters On Songwriting, an insightful book which includes a section on Leonard Cohen (available at Leonard Cohen Los Angeles 1992). Over the years, I've posted several Leonard Cohen quotes from this piece. One of my favorites has to do with songwriting:

... After a while, if you stick with a song long enough it will yield. But long enough is way beyond any reasonable estimation of what you think long enough may be. In fact, long enough is way beyond. It’s abandoning, it’s abandoning that idea of what you think long enough may be.

Because if you think it’s a week, that’s not long enough. If you think it’s a month, it’s not long enough. If you think it’s a year, it’s not long enough. If you think it’s a decade, it’s not long enough.

The good news about the choice of photos of Leonard Cohen for the cover of the March 2012 German edition of Rolling Stone is that (1) it's a photo of Leonard Cohen and (2) it's one of my favorite photos of the Canadian singer-songwriter.

The bad news about the choice of photos of Leonard Cohen for the cover of the German edition of Rolling Stone is that it's one of everybody's favorite photos of Leonard Cohen.

The shot by Platon has appeared in multiple magazines and on hundreds of web sites. Yep, it's a case of LC Déjà Vu

Leonard Cohen On Tattoos: In this exchange from On the road to singing sensation, a 1966 CBC TV interview, Leonard Cohen exercises the poet’s prerogative of re-interpreting and manipulating the interviewer's words and his own to distract and deflect:

Leonard Cohen: ... I thought that I would ... get a tattoo
Beryl Fox: Where?
Leonard Cohen: There’s this place on St. Lawrence Blvd.

As far as I can determine, Leonard Cohen never got that tattoo - but many of his admirers do sport inked images of and words inspired by the Canadian singer-songwriter on their bodies. Those specimens form the content of the Leonard Cohen On Tattoos photo series.

I'm taken by photos of Leonard Cohen performances set in those venues invested with hundreds of years of their own history. Not only are romanticized notions of the past evoked, but the contrast between contemporary stage lighting and sound systems and the ancient backgrounds can be especially striking. (On the other hand, I am reliably informed many such sites are uncomfortable, lack sufficient parking and toilet facilities, and feature suboptimal acoustics).

In any case, this shot taken by Ipoh kia at the July 16, 2008 Leonard Cohen World Tour concert at Edinburgh Castle, the site of a royal castle since the 12th century, certainly qualifies for this category.

1. Leonard Cohen's Left Ear - Antonia Michaelis

Antonia Michaelis, author of The Storyteller, is on a blog  tour promoting her book.  At the Readaraptor, she writes about her efforts to garner rights to use the lines from a Leonard Cohen song in her book in a tale called "Leonard Cohen's Left Ear:"

Once upon a time there was an author who made the mistake authors sometimes make: she wrote a book. The second mistake she made was to let song texts of Leonard Cohen play a role in that book. My editor started researching. The copyright for the texts, she found out, are owned by a dozen different agencies. Cohen himself doesn´t have any rights. Or else … maybe Cohen doesn´t really exist? Is he only a product of the music industry?

Leonard Cohen's titular left ear comes into play when Ms Michaelis (or, at least the protagonist of her story) goes to a Leonard Cohen concert in hopes of convincing him to sign off on her project.

I like the huge screen, on which you can see the musicians in close-up, best. The next three hours we watch either Leonard Cohen´s left ear or his nose.

So, Leonard Cohen's Left Ear, as invisioned by Antonia Michaelis, would be something along the lines of this shot of Mr Cohen's left ear displayed on the concert screen at the July 11, 2009 Weybridge concert (photo by dorsetbays).

2. Leonard Cohen's Left Ear - DrHGuy

The DrHGuy site has demonstrated a predilection for cataloging Leonard Cohen images on the basis of the Canadian singer-songwriter's anatomy. Examples follow:

Given this propensity, it is only natural that the anecdote related by Antonia Michaelis would prompt consideration of a new, super-specialized DrHGuy photo classification: Leonard Cohen's Left Ear.

Note that this category, if made official, would require more than a photo of Leonard Cohen that shows his left ear; the image must somehow focus on the left ear (and no fair reversing a shot of his right ear). The first two specimens are displayed below:

Posters for Night Magic, a 1985 pop opera produced in France, written and directed by Lewis Furey with lyrics by Leonard Cohen.

Description from AMG AllMovie Guide:

In this fantasy-drama-romance, forbidden love between an angel (Carole Laure) and a singer (Nick Mancuso) is set against the singer's attempts to resuscitate a fading theater. During the period of one night, the singer is visited by three different guardian angels out to help him succeed in putting together a stunning show (a show that will include some of Canada's best dancers). One of the angels (Laure) takes a liking to the singer, and that gives rise to musical numbers on the nature of the creative genius and the conflicts that can arise between art, artifice, and real life.
