ARE YOU LIVING IN A HOUSE OF PAIN?

DECLARE YOUR INDEPENDENCE FROM PAIN!!!!

PAIN signals that something is wrong within the body. Acute pain is caused by an immediate trauma and acts as a warning signal. Chronic pain, on the other hand, is pain that lasts more than six months and interferes with your daily activities.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS: Dull ache, sharp shooting twinges, numbness, gripping, burning, gnawing, throbbing or pulsating sensations.

POSSIBLE CAUSES: Trauma, obesity, tumors/growths, poor posture, flat feet, food sensitivities, emotions/stress/anxiety, poor diet, dental problems, nerve impingements and disease conditions.

DIETARY & LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS:

Use RICE method–Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation–for initial 24-36 hours after an injury. Ice for 20 min about every hour or two. Then alternate: heat 10 min, ice 10 min, heat 10 min.

Eat a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods emphasizing magnesium and calcium foods found in: kale, collard greens, almonds, blackberries, mustard greens, oatmeal, oranges, navy beans and sunflower seeds. Avoid or limit foods that contribute to an acidic condition such as simple or refined sugars, caffeine, salty foods and alcohol. Limit foods high in saturated fats, including red meats, dairy products, warm-water shellfish and partially-hydrogenated oil. Drink chlorophyll-rich, green drinks, such as extracts of wheat grass. Eat more fatty fish(mackerel, herring and salmon) preferably wild, which form anti-inflammatory substances.

NOTE: Animal fat is a primary source of arachidonic acid that is the precursor of a number of inflammatory prostaglandins. Decreasing animal fat can cause a significant reduction in the inflammatory process.

Identify and avoid food allergens. We have specific tests to check for food allergies.

NUTRIENT APPLICATIONS:

Calcium and Magnesium relax the muscles. Analgesic Herbs: chamomile, skullcap, passion flower, kava kava and white willow bark are sedative and anti-spasmodic. Glucosamine sulfate and MSM help your connective tissues. Vitamin C can be taken to bowel tolerance. Essential fatty acids and proteolytic enzymes are essential to reduce inflammation and decrease pain. Other helpful nutrients include: Quercetin, Vitamin E, Vitamin B-6, Vitamin B-1 and Vitamin B-12.

The following alternative therapies are beneficial in controlling pain: Chiropractic Adjustments, Acupuncture, TENS(Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator) , Physiotherapy, gentle stretching, topical ointments, Kinesiotape, Cold Low Level Laser, Massage, Biofeedback, Guided Imagery and Hypnotherapy.

WHAT IS COLD LOW LEVEL LASER THERAPY? It is a form of phototherapy involving low power coherent light to an injury to stimulate healing and tissue repair, resolve inflammation, increase range of motion and give pain relief.

HOW DOES COLD LOW LEVEL LASER WORK?

A photochemical reaction takes place where photons from the laser affect the tissue at the cellular level. The cold laser enters the tissue being treated, alters the cell membrane permeability, and at the cellular level, is absorbed in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are known to be the “Powerhouse” of our cells and make ATP which is needed for the life enhancement process of every cell. This facilitates:

an anti-inflammatory action, reducing swelling and improving joint mobility

an increased vascular activity thereby stimulating lymph & blood circulation

stimulation of nerve function and speeds the process of nerve cell & muscle action

a decrease in fibrous/scar tissue formation from injury, burns or surgery

an increased metabolic activity and increases the output of specific enzymes, increases oxygen to the blood cells and improves the body’s immune response

faster wound healing by stimulating fibroblasts in an injury thereby speeding healing

rapid cell growth

WHAT ARE THE ADANTAGES OF LASER VS OTHER THERAPIES?

Laser has been shown to offer superior healing and pain relieving effects for acute and chronic pain conditions, as well as sports injuries, when compared to other electrotherapeutic modalities. It is a method of treating muscle, tendon, ligament, connective tissue, bone, neurological dysfunction or damage, and skin tissue with one simple piece of equipment.

Aging? Male? What Can You Do?

June Topic in honor of Father’s Day!

What is Aging Male Syndrome? This syndrome that occurs to men between the approximate ages of 35 and 65 is a collection of symptoms that occur due to a decline in production of testosterone in a man’s body. Low testosterone levels in males are often associated with symptoms of aging and are referred to as andropause or male menopause.

Testosterone is an important anabolic hormone in men, as it plays important roles in maintaining both physical and mental health. The decline of testosterone is normal in healthy males as they age. However, when hormone levels drop, some of the commonly exhibited symptoms include:

Weight gain

Difficulty sleeping

Loss of sex drive/Erection problems

Difficulties with memory/concentration

Feeling irritable/angry/nervousness

Loss of motivation

Lower self confidence

Tiredness/Loss of Energy

Muscle Loss/Bone Density decreases

Depression/Mood swings

Increased Urination

Hair Loss

As testosterone levels decrease, so does high density lipoproteins with an increase in triglycerides. The visceral fat cells are the most insulin resistant cells in the human body. They have excess hormone binding receptors for cortisol and androgens and decreased receptors for insulin. The cortisol and insulin levels rise while progesterone, growth hormone and testosterone decline. The visceral fat cell with its increased receptors, blood supply and innervations, begins to collect more fat in the form of triglycerides. If this is not interrupted with natural hormone balancing, it will lead to abdominal obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol, which is known as metabolic syndrome.

Lowered testosterone is associated with an increase in general inflammation and C Reactive Protein levels which is a red flag when it comes to assessing risk of cardiovascular events such as stroke or infarction.

One vital issue in regards to the overall health of men is the exposure to estrogens from numerous sources. They are found in food, hygiene products and even in the air (from chemical sprays). This exposure as well as other issues can lead to an increase in the conversion of androgens to estrogens. Aromatase, an enzyme found in the liver, is responsible for this conversion. The more this occurs, the lesser the amount of testosterone in the body. Estrogen dominance, then, can lead to multiple long-term and devastating health issues for men, such as enlarged prostate and prostate cancer.

The Allopathic method of testosterone replacement therapy has not been proven to be particularly effective. Some side effects may include:

ü Elevated hemoglobin (above normal range)

ü Bladder and urination problems

ü Adverse liver changes

ü Sleep apnea

ü Breast tenderness and swelling

ü Testicular atrophy

ü Fluid retention

ü Increased body hair

In addition, testosterone replacement therapy has been suggested as a potential factor involved with increased risk of prostate cancer.

What can you do?

A healthy diet, stress management and active lifestyle are of utmost importance, along with acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments which can have a dramatic effect on Aging Male Syndrome. Nutritional supplements can help to inhibit the activity of the aromatase enzyme.

Some nutritional tips include Boron, a trace mineral, with a role in cell membrane integrity, bone health, and proper brain function. Its’ benefits have anti-aging properties, prevents bone thinning, enhances testosterone levels, improves memory and eye-hand coordination and concentration, improves allergy symptoms and fungal infections as well as lowering blood lipid levels. Important sources include: apricots, apples, oranges, almonds, red grapes, pear, plum, prunes, kiwi, dates, vegetables, soybeans and nuts, chickpeas, hazelnuts, currants, peanut butter, red kidney beans, tomato, lentils, olive, onion, potato, wine and beer.

Researchers found: higher levels of Selenium reduce improper blood-sugar metabolism, consuming the most calcium, in food, lead to a 25% less likely death rate and those exposed to high levels of sunlight in their job are less likely to develop kidney cancer.

Other supplements may include: Arginine, Prostate support, Zinc, Co-Q-10, multi-mineral, Vitamin D, homeopathic and herbal remedies for male health, omega-3s and green tea.

Tests to consider:

Complete blood analysis should be monitored on a regular basis, including a PSA. Those experiencing symptoms like these above, would benefit from having testosterone levels tested (via blood test), and performed in the morning when the testes release more testosterone. Subsequent testing should be done at about the same time in the morning to ensure consistent results.

In addition, a Salivary Hormone Test is crucial to check to see if one’s hormones are balanced.

Why is Saliva testing truly superior to serum for accurately monitoring transdermal (topically applied) hormones?

Hormone levels in saliva accurately represent the amount of hormone delivered to receptors in the body, unlike serum which may not be delivered to the receptors, therefore, saliva is a reflection of the active hormone levels of the body.

The majority of hormones in the blood exist in 1 of 2 forms: free and biologically active (5%) or protein bound (95%). Saliva measures the free bio-available hormone levels in the body, while serum measures only the protein bound non-available hormone levels. Therefore, serum is a much less accurate measurement than that of saliva when assessing functional hormone levels.

A Comprehensive panel includes: 4 Cortisols, DHEA, Progesterone, Testosterone and Estrogen. With these levels, one can determine the most optimal prescription program. We are giving 10% off your Saliva Hormone Test for the month of June!!!

JOINT PAIN? GET RELIEF NOW!!

OSTEOARTHRITIS is a degenerative joint disease that primarily affects the large, weight bearing joints and the joints in the hands. It is a slow, progressive cartilage deterioration followed by “hardening of the joints” due to calcification and bone spur formation. The “joint cushion” deteriorates, which leads to pain and limited movement of the joint.

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

-Early morning joint stiffness

-Pain that is worse after use

-Stiffness after periods of rest

-Creaking/cracking of joints after movement

-Tenderness and swelling in certain areas

-Restricted mobility

-Pain in the joint before or during changes in the weather

Possible causes include age. In the U.S., over 80% of the population over about 50 show signs of osteoarthritis due to decreased ability of the collagen matrix to repair itself, and also from general wear and tear. Other causes include: obesity, poor diet, genetic predisposition, skeletal defects, hormonal imbalances, injury and food allergies and sensitivities. It develops in joints that are injured by repeated overuse from performing a particular task or playing a favorite sport.

9 PROVEN METHODS FOR PAIN RELIEF NOW

1. EVERYDAY ROUTINES:

Do some gentle exercises/stretches before you go to bed. While watching tv or sitting at your desk: Adjust your position frequently, periodically turn your neck from one side to the other, shake out your hands and bend and stretch your legs. Take frequent breaks throughout the day, every few hours, to stretch stiff joints and sore muscles.

Use an analgesic cream to massage the painful joint(s).

When ready for bed, use a moist heat pad on the painful joint. Another option, is to soak in a warm bath with ½ cup Epsom Salt and ½ cup Baking Soda. When you awake in the morning, you’ll feel less stiffness in your joints.

2. MAKE TASKS EASIER TO PROTECT YOUR JOINTS:

Avoid excess stress on your joints by finding products that are comfortable, easy-to-use or have friendly packaging. For example, in the kitchen use rubber jar openers and

reachers, in the bedroom use zipper pulls, buttoning aids and bedrails and in the bathroom use tub bars and handrails.

3. KEEP MOVING:

Movement helps to decrease pain, increase range of motion and endurance, strengthen your muscles, decrease fatigue and improve overall muscle fitness. Choose the activities that build the muscles around your joints but don’t damage them that are good for arthritis. Include low-impact aerobic exercise such as Walking, Cycling, Aquatic Exercises, Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, Country Line or Ballroom Dancing, or a gentle exercise/stretch class.

The key is to have a regular exercise program. The goal is to do a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity about 5 days/week.

Gardening can be very therapeutic and digging in the dirt can be helpful for sore hands.

Avoid: Running, Jumping, Tennis, High-impact aerobics, repetitive motions and inactivity.

4. MEDICATIONS?

No medications are completely free of side effects. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are the primary drug used for treatment with aspirin as the most common. Although NSAIDS provide temporary relief, they accelerate joint destruction in the long run. They prevent prostaglandin formation in order to decrease inflammation; they also inhibit cartilage synthesis and increase cartilage destruction, which accelerates osteoarthritis progression. Also, it may cause damage to the gastro-intestinal tract and increases ones’ ulcer risk. Therefore, discuss with your doctor a medication plan for your specific pain symptoms.

5. DIETARY & LIFESTYLE MODIFICATIONS

Consider eating fish as salmon, mackerel, tuna, and herring as a source of omega 3’s. Eat organic, unprocessed, unrefined foods with emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, legumes, lean meats, nuts, seeds and essential fatty acids from cod liver oil, flax seed oil, walnut oil, etc. Increase boron-rich foods including lettuce, cabbage, apples, dates, prunes, raisins, almonds and hazelnuts. Sulfur and methionine-containing foods as cabbage, brussel sprouts, garlic and onions are also beneficial. A half lb of fresh cherries or blueberries may be beneficial per day. They contain proanthocyanidins that aid in collagen metabolism and decrease joint inflammation. Consider juicing especially using pineapple due to its bromelain content and ginger due to its anti-inflammatory agent. Eat one cup of white or red grapes daily as the skin contains resveratrol, a natural compound known to act as a Cox-2 inhibitor and an antioxidant.

Drink six-eight 8-ounce glasses of filtered water per day to flush toxins and avoid dehydration.

Drink 1-2 cups of Green or Black Tea daily which is rich in polyphenols – compounds that suppress the expression of a key gene involved in arthritis inflammation.

Decrease or avoid eating dairy products, refined foods, meat, nightshade foods (tomatoes, white potatoes, eggplant, peppers (not black pepper) and margarine)

Nightshade foods are alkaloids that increase inflammation and inhibit collagen repair.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and allergenic foods. An elimination/rotation diet is recommended. Avoid environmental toxins as much as possible. Avoid smoking, as the toxins in smoke cause stress on connective tissue.

6. NUTRIENT SUPPORT:

Although there may not be a magic bullet to “cure” arthritis, some supplements and/or extracts may help it to keep it better controlled. When buying a supplement, check its quality control, read labels carefully and try one product at a time to keep track of its effect.

Some supplements to consider:

Bromelain, Feverfew, Ginger and Turmeric—(have significant anti-inflammatory activity). Valerian, Passion Flower, Skullcap and Kava Kava are known muscle relaxants. White Willow Bark is the forerunner to aspirin. Boswellia Serrata has a strong analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity. Taking these 2 herbs can be just as effective as taking Motrin. (take 240mg of willow bark and 1,000mg of boswellia per day.

Proteolytic Enzymes, taken without food, reduces pain and inflammation. Antioxidants may include: Grape Seed Extract, Vitamins C and E, Zinc, Glutathione, Selenium and N-acetyl cysteine. Vitamin C and bioflavenoids help in reducing the progression of osteoarthritis

Fish oil, Cod Liver oil and Black Currant Seed oil help to decrease inflammation.

Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin Sulfate plus Sulfur and N-Acetyl-Glucosamine are building blocks for cartilage repair. Green Lipped Mussel Extract may be beneficial for severe osteoarthritis per a New England study.

Boron decreases urinary excretion of Calcium and magnesium. Adrenal support is needed which may include Pantothenic Acid. Calcium and Magnesium are essential for bone/ligament and muscle health.

Vitamin D supplement or a high Vitamin D diet may help to reduce ones risk for worsening their arthritis by 75%, per a recent high-profile study.

NEW PRODUCT:

A growing body of scientific research shows that the naturally occurring disease fighting antioxidant compounds contained in Balaton Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate have these health benefits: Anti-inflammation, Joint Function, Cardiovascular Function, Mobility and Flexibility, Anti-Aging, Cell Integrity, Healthy Immune System and Natural Sleep Cycle.

7. A Detoxification Program may be beneficial.

8. Stress reduction is essential.

Some effective therapies include Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Prayer and Spirituality. The emotional release of journaling about your feelings may assist in the decreased sensation of pain. Laughing, can relax muscles, reduce stress, relieve pain and boost your immune system. Decrease dwelling on the negative thoughts especially when coping with your pain as it can increase your risk of disability. Instead, focus on calming statements, etc.

9. Other Lifestyle Modifications May Include:

Regular chiropractic care is beneficial to address structural/postural problems.

Therapeutic Taping including Kinesiotape, wrapped around a joint to realign, support, and take pressure off it can have great benefits for arthritis sufferers.

Set a goal to maintain normal weight to avoid added weight bearing stress on the joints.

Massage Therapy may aid in increasing circulation, energy, flexibility and the body’sfunction.

Acupuncture and Acupressure are ancient Chinese pain relief treatments. In acupuncture, needles are used to stimulate specific points in the body, and in acupressure, fingers are used instead of needles.

The interactions of the mind, body and spirit can have powerful effects on our health. Our office staff and expert practitioners are available to answer your specific questions and make recommendations as needed.

REDEFINING BREAST HEALTH-APRIL-DRY SKIN BRUSHING?

WHY BOTHER WITH DRY SKIN BRUSHING?

The skin is our body’s largest organ and has a vital role in taking in and ridding the body of nutrients and toxins. It is responsible for ¼ of the body’s daily detoxification & known as the 3rd kidney. Since it eliminates more than one pound of waste daily, over time it may become overstressed leading to clogged pores & toxins remaining in the body.

12 BENEFITS OF DRY BRUSHING

1. Unclogs our pores and removes dead skin layers

2. Improves circulation, blood flow and oxygen.

3. Cleans toxins from the lymphatic system.

4. Improves digestion.

5. Strengthens the immune system.

6. Improves the nervous system.

7. Makes the skin feel smooth, silky and invigorated.

8. Tightens the skin and helps to prevent cellulite.

9. Tones muscles and lifts the breasts.

10. Stimulates oil-producing glands.

11. Energizing, inexpensive, natural and easy to do daily.

12. Effective in preventing breast cancer & detoxifying when undergoing chemotherapy.

WHAT TYPE OF BRUSH?

The brush should contain natural bristles (not synthetic) and have a long handle. It should be kept dry and not used for bathing.

HOW TO DO DRY BRUSHING?

Dry brushing is best done first thing in the morning & takes 5 minutes.

Watch the video below for the most effective way to dry brush and enjoy the exhilarating and invigorating feeling as well as softer skin.

Start by brushing at the bottom of your feet and move up the leg from back to front one leg at a time and avoiding the groin area.

Use long sweeping light strokes going upwards towards the heart.

Next do your arms & hands the same as above, always towards the heart.

Move to the back of your upper torso and brush upwards.

In a circular motion brush your abdominal area and continue towards the heart, including both sides of your torso.

Brush your breasts very lightly in a circular motion inwards & avoid the nipple area. This aides lymphatic flow as they experience no movement.

Use long, light strokes to brush your neck & chest downward.

Use a stiff washcloth, dry or with hot water for your face and use short even motions outward towards your hairline.

When you are done, take your usual shower to rinse off the dead skin cells. As an option, you can alternate between hot and cold water which will help to open up your pores.

It is exciting to see significant improvement on follow-up Thermography reports after doing dry brushing for a few months.

Why not give the gift of a dry brush to an important person in your life?

IS THE AIR YOU BREATHE POLLUTED?

It is estimated that we have a minimum of 40 neurotoxins & carcinogens in our blood & urine at all times. Studies have shown that almost everyone tested had significant levels of pathogens and varying levels of vitamin & mineral deficiencies. Much of this is due to contaminated soil, water & the air we breathe daily. Our crops are grown on soils depleted & grown with artificial fertilizers and our meats are consumed from animals given antibiotics & growth hormones to increase their weight.

One of the major problems with toxins is that you cannot see, taste, smell or feel them. We do not realize we are being affected until we come down with a chronic illness after years of subtle and repetitive exposure.

Toxins are 1 of the 6 Interferences to Wellness along with structural integrity, nutrition, allergies, electromagnetic interference and negative emotional patterns.

A study published in the British Medical Journal estimated that 75% of most cancers are caused by environmental toxins and lifestyle factors which are stored in fatty tissues. Some of the effects of these toxins include:

* Neurological disorders * Cancer * Nutritional Deficiencies * Hormone Imbalances–infertility, premature puberty, PMS, menopausal symptoms * Enzyme dysfunction * Fatigue, Headaches, Obesity * Muscle and Vision problems * Immune system issues, Allergies, Asthma, Chemical sensitivities * Chronic viral infections

WHAT ARE THE 6 STEPS TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE IN A WORLD OF CHEMICALS?

1. Since most food products are contaminated with toxic chemicals buy and eat organic produce and free-range organic foods as often as possible. Avoid eating farm-raised fish which is contaminated with mercury and PCBs. Avoid all processed foods–they are processed with chemicals, dyes, colors, etc.. Avoid using all artificial food additives including artificial sweeteners and MSG. (use Stevia as your sweetener) Remove your “silver” dental fillings by a biological dentist as this is a major source of mercury. Use natural cleaning products in your home and natural organic toiletries on your body.(Ask us for our list of cleaning without chemicals. Avoid using air dryer sheets and fabric softeners unless environmental friendly.

2. Balanced nutritional support is not only essential but it is vital to support the body as it detoxifies. Enzymes provide a biochemical catalyst and aids in digestion, enhancing the overall nutritional status. Probiotics provides the bacteria needed to promote bowel health and elimination. Adrenal support handles the toxic stress placed on the body during the detoxification process. Nutritional detoxification utilizes supplements designed to facilitate the toxic process. Homeopathy helps to release specific toxic substances from storage in the fatty tissues. It is complimented by an essential fatty acid which binds to the toxin to be eliminated from the system. Other detoxification products may include liver support.

3. The detoxification cellular cleanse energy balance foot bath is designed to restore the body’s energy and balance, while facilitating and aiding in its natural detoxification process. It uses direct current to create an ionic energy field similar to the energy produced by the human body. Has been shown in clinical trials to balance and restore the body’s Ph and electromagnetic energy. A series of at least 10 treatments will be needed to balance the body’s systems.

4. Other detoxification therapies include skin brushing, salt and soda bath, vinegar bath, lymphatic drainage, infrared sauna and cold low level laser therapy. Contact our office for further details on these therapies.

5. The purpose of any cleansing program is to support toxin elimination through various detoxifying systems of the body, including GI, respiratory, lymphatic, urinary, bowel and the skin. The best time to cleanse can be seasonal, in the Spring or Fall.

There are many levels of detoxification a person can do ranging from a bland diet to a well-balanced juice fast or liver flush. ***It is important to note that detoxification may be inappropriate for people who are underweight, physically weak, or have a hypothyroid or hypoglycemic condition. Recovering alcoholics, drug users, diabetics and those with eating disorders should never participate in a cleansing program without strict medical supervision.”***

6. The process of detoxification may require a multi-faceted approach by identifying the toxic substances using blood and/or hair analysis along with nutritional testing. When you visit our wellness center we will assess your specific nutrient needs that may also include support for the male/female hormone system, immune support and organ support.

DARK CHOCOLATE FOR VALENTINE’S DAY?

WANTING A SWEET TREAT?

Make dark chocolate your indulgence of choice, and consider organic dark chocolate that contains at least 75% cocoa. Not only will you be solving your sweet tooth craving, but you will be providing your body with heart and brain health benefits and in turn reduce blood pressure, inflammation and increase blood flow.

CHOCOLATE MAKES US FEEL GOOD! WHY?

It contains over 500 natural mood-elevating chemicals with theobromine at the top of the list. It’s a molecular cousin to caffeine but without the stimulating effects to the central nervous system. Chocolate also contains Phenylethylamine (PEA) which when eaten releases endorphins or “feel good chemicals”. That, along with serotonin, will have you feeling fine!

CHOCOLATE FOR BLOOD SUGAR BALANCE & HEART DISEASE?

Yes, dark chocolate is low on the glycemic index(the measure of a food item’s impact on one’s blood sugar level). It is loaded with antioxidants, like polyphenols and flavenols, which are plant compounds. Studies have shown that dark chocolate and cocoa may improve blood flow and keep blood vessels healthy and improve our cells’ sensitivity to insulin and glucose. The cocoa found in chocolate triggers the production of nitric oxide in the blood which relaxes and dilates blood vessels allowing more blood to pass through them. In addition, these flavenoids found in cocao beans, red wine, green tea and cranberries are good to keep your blood pressure under control and your LDL’s or bad cholesterol levels in check. They help prevent free radicals from causing cell damage leading to heart disease.

So, for Valentine’s Day this year… enjoy your chocolate… in moderation of course!

6 KEY HEART-HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHANGES INCLUDE:

Keeping it simple. Think about 3 main principles-diet, exercise and stress management-as you go through each day and stay committed to realistic goals.

1. EATING RIGHT. To lower your cholesterol, it is best to refrain from eating foods that are high in saturated fat and trans fats. This means relying on chicken and turkey breast, fish 3-4 times/week for main protein staples if you are not a vegetarian. The omega-3′s found in fish help in lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of blood clots as well as reducing inflammation. It also means not eating any milk or yogurt that is above 1% milk fat or any cheese that is above 3% milk fat.

You should also eat foods that drag cholesterol out of the body and have been shown to lower blood cholesterol by up to 25%. These foods include beans and peas (especially red kidney beans, chick peas and lentils), oat bran and oatmeal, psyllium husk fiber (2-3 tsps/day), ground flaxseed (2 Tbsp/day) and fruits/vegetables containing soluble fiber (apples, pears, peaches, plums, spinach, kale, broccoli). Folate and potassium in orange juice will help increase heart health and reduce cholesterol. Keep a good potassium/sodium ratio by eating: sweet potatoes, tomato paste, soybeans and bananas.

Good sources of magnesium include: pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, spinach and unrefined grains. As reported in the Oct 2008 issue of the Journal of Nutrition, researchers found a 17% reduction of serum CRP concentrations of consumers from 1 serving (20g) of dark chocolate every 3 days. In general, shoot for a diet rich in vegetables (6 servings/day), fruit (4 servings/day), olive oil or canola oil, fish, whole grains, oatmeal, green tea, mushrooms, sesame seeds, and flaxseeds.

2. EXERCISING 30 MINUTES EACH DAY. One of the best studies to date on why we should exercise was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine on Aug. 4, 2005. Risk of heart disease increases twofold with a sedentary lifestyle, and close to 1/2 of all patients over the age of 12 are physically inactive.

3. MANAGING STRESS LEVELS. When worried, anxious or scared, stress hormones are released that can have direct toxic effects on our delicate cardiovascular tissue. Stress can also have an indirect affect on our heart health. Data published in The Journal Of the College of Cardiology showed that stress leads to poor lifestyle habits such as smoking, poor dietary choices and physical inactivity.

4. KNOWING AND CONTROLLING BLOOD PRESSURE AND CHOLESTEROL LEVELS. Monitoring and controlling blood pressure can reduce risk of stroke by up to 40%, risk of heart disease by 50% and risk of heart failure by up to 25%. Blood pressure can be reduced naturally by lowering salt intake, following a healthy diet, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, and increasing physical activity. Triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol levels can be lowered by following the above eating right information.

5. NO SMOKING! Just 24 hours after quitting, chance of heart attack decreases, and after one year, risk of heart attack is 1/2 that of a smoker. We can offer support on treatment options if you want to quit smoking. AVOID SECOND HAND SMOKE. Hospitalizations for heart attacks fell sharply in Pueblo, CO, after the implementation of a law that banned smoking in public places and workplaces according to a recent issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

6. SUPPLEMENTATION CONSIDERATIONS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR:

Coenzyme-Q-10, Lycopene, Artichoke leaf extract, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium,Omega-3, Turmeric,
Vit C, E, Folic Acid, B-Complex, Red Yeast Rice, Niacin, Policosonal, Beta-Glucan, Inositol and Garlic

In some cases, prescription drugs may also be required to get cholesterol into the safe range. However, studies suggest that 90% of individuals with high cholesterol can reduce it into the ideal range using the nutrition, lifestyle and supplementation practices outlined above.

WHY THE FUSS ABOUT CHOLESTEROL?

It is a fatty, waxy material that is found in high-fat meat and dairy products, as well as egg yolks, organ meats and shellfish. Because of the essential role cholesterol plays in every cell of the body to help digest fats, strengthen cell membranes, and make hormones – the body creates all it needs on its own – about 1,000 mg a day.

In order for cholesterol to reach our cells, it must rely on special carriers called lipoproteins: low-density lipoproteins (LDL)-”bad” form and high-density lipoproteins (HDL)-’good” form of cholesterol.

LDL carries cholesterol through the body and deposits it in the cells.

HDL transports any cholesterol the cells don’t need to the liver, where it eventually gets processed and eliminated.

Although various body tissues remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream and then use it to make cell membranes, bile acids, vitamin D and various hormones, once the tissues have acquired all the cholesterol they need, they stop extracting LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream. The extra cholesterol, which happens when we eat too many foods high in cholesterol, continues to circulate in your arteries.

LDL deposits the excess cholesterol onto artery walls, where it forms plaque that clogs the blood vessels and can ultimately lead to heart disease or even a heart attack.

A good idea is to keep your LDL cholesterol level under 2.5 mmol/L (96 mg/dL) and your total cholesterol about 3.9 mmol/L (150 mg/dL)-4.7 mmol/L (180 mg/dL).

WHAT ABOUT THE CHOLESTEROL LOWERING DRUGS CALLED STATINS?

New research has shown that 1/2 the people who have a heart attack don’t have high cholesterol, rather a high C-reactive protein level — a marker for inflammation in the body.

Side effects of Statin drugs include:

general aching in the joints and muscles that may occur even years after beginning the statin

peripheral neuropathy, interstitial pneumonitis, and various cognitive and psychiatric effects

for women, the statins block squalene, an antioxidant and immune system booster that is vital to preventing breast cancer
