We will like to appreciate the kind donation and support from the Congleton United Reformed Church, The church through Margaret Bourner and Alex have since two years helped to build a midwife clicnic in the Zolzugu community of Tamale.

Zolzugu is a village under Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana. The Northern Region is the largest of ten regions covering an area of 70,384 square kilometers or 31 percent of Ghana’s area. Northern Region is divided into 20 districts. The Northern Region’s capital is Tamale. More than 75% of the economically active population are agricultural. The low population density is partly caused by emigration and poverty. Access to health care in this region is very poor and thus the region records the highest maternal and infant mortality in the country, it is a daily practice to see women in labor mounted on bicycles or motorbikes traveling miles just to get access to basic health care or delivery.

Every year 340,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. The vast majority of deaths could be prevented with better access to an ambulance and obstetric care. However, most women in rural Africa give birth at home, having limited access to transport, being unable to reach a suitably equipped health facility in case of an emergency.

It is the hope of Drive Aid to help save our mothers and babies through the small midwife clinic projects, this project aims to build small local structures equipped with basic health care needs specially tailored for delivery of babies and care of pregnant women before and after birth, this clinics will engage the services of Local midwifes existing in the local communities and equip them with extra hygienic training and resource to carry out their duties in a more humane environments which are properly maintain and remains a property of the community. This will promote the sustainable local methods of delivery and make it accessible

Formal education in Ghana has taken after the bureaucracy of the country, Teachers focus on finishing the education curriculum to educating the young, in turn the kid’s just memories without any sense of understanding. We don’t plan to change the education system in Ghana, but hope to make education an enjoyable hobby for our target communities

Funded by HKU 100 Service Fund, Ghana 2012: Do small things with GREAT Love is a service project initiated by a group of HKU students who share a common passion of serving in Africa. This summer we will travel to Damongo, Ghana where we will be working closely with Drive Aid Ghana,a non-profit organization that dedicates itself to the reduction of poverty in Damongo.

Our campaign also includes an exhibition, sharing sessions and charity sale in October so as to raise local students’ awareness on poverty issue.

With a focus on the sustainability of our service project, we aim at empowering our service targets with practical lifelong skills.

Our focused areas in Ghana are as follows:

a) Promote health-care and disease prevention in the orphanage
b) Promote the planting of Moringa, which can effectively improve malnutrition and self-sufficiency in Damongo
c) Transfer practical skills and knowledge to the orphans

Many are times people ask; “What is Drive Aid?” or even; “is your organization helping drivers?” as funny as that may sound to most people who know Drive Aid it is logical to ask.

Drive Aid does not drive in the sense of Cars, but hearts and purposed; let me put it a bit simple; everyone has a “Drive” things that makes them “move” or “Tickle” others may say “a contact point”, our purpose with Drive Aid is to aid this drive either that of the rural poor, the volunteer or the donor, we believe you have something special about your that can help the world move, that can change the life of someone, that can put joy in the heart of another, that can save a dying child and turn a blur future into a brighter one.

Thanks for coming to our site once again, for most of you who have been following our updates and progress, you notice that we redirect you to our main home page http://www.driveaidghana.org but we do still maintain this site as our main source of instant updates and information on upcoming events,- most of our feeds are burnt from here. so don't fail to visit here once in a while.
This year began with us streamlining our events and plans, we so grateful to the Lord and to you our friends and family who have been following our updates and supporting as in every way possible.

You will of-course notice the great progress we are making especially if you do follow us on facebook and or on Twitter .

As we grow we are redefining our purpose to cover more and more people as well as get more people involved.
The good new is that we now have our USA Coordinator : Jeanine, who would handle all problems based in USA. reach her on matters related to Drive Aid at: usa@driveaidghana.org
As you already notice we are now not only focusing on Empowerment and Sustainability but also on volunteer service as well as the addition of Artemisia into our projects.

On the progressive note of activities;

Drive Aid is now active in the management of Redemption Children's Home an orphanage founded by Rev. Abraham L. Saaka in 2004, this home now provide a family and hope to over 50 children, our volunteers help in serving and supporting this children, you too can be a part of it! contact us for more details.

The Moringa Farm

The farm projects has also made tremendous changes and growth.
New Followers shooting up on moringa trees! new leave growing at the time we need it most to feed families and out animals.

There have also been new developments in our animal farms, 14 rabbits, 40 new chicks and still increasing, i just saw 20 new chicks hutch today!
We are also building a local incubator that will hutch 400 eggs in 21 days!

This when completed would help us supply new chicks to farmers as well as grow them to lay eggs and to provide meat to our target groups especially the orphanage.
We are working on expanding or projects to three more near by villages name; Sualepe, Busunu, and Achubunyo

A 12 acre land is already acquired in Busunu awaiting the farming season to start.
We are considering future plans of irrigation to help reduce the dependency on waiting on the farming season. these off-course require great investment and planing, your support would be greatly welcome

For those who have been following you would remember that somewhere mid this year we started a partnership with Anamed international and become part of their network, this has lead to incorporating Artemisia which is a good and potential plant in helping rural poor people deal with malaria. it helps and works in most resistant cases, I personally have witness its effects
We started a pilot garden in Damongo, which has made great progress, we now have families and people calling in to get leaves for the treatment of malaria! the next stage of -course is to teach them how to grow it

Volunteers are also welcome to join our partner organizations, in providing health care, education and empowerment, for people who love to teach New Life School would be heaven!

Cletek Service a computer service and training center, which also works together with Drive Aid through the donation of the Gonja Development Foundation (GDF) set up a computer lab for the new life school, i wish you were there to see the faces! as children for the first time touch a mouse!

Help us in providing such opportunities to hundreds of schools like now life in the region.

The last but not least is our new "Charity Village Project" this is going to be a village built by volunteers and managed by them, volunteers or visitors who come in to sleep will be required to pay a fee of which part would be used to manage and expand the village, the other part would be invested into areas they see fit within the community (orphanage, school, clinic etc). the buildings would be done in the local style : thatch houses - round shapes with grass roofing, it would be a community and a home for all volunteers, educative programs to the community may be held here as well as activities, please note- this does not rural out our family host programs.

STEP CLASS; steps to education

Background:
Education in the Northern part of Ghana, is still a big gap that tells the poverty rate of the region, up here education is a matter of the "rich", people in rural poor areas struggle even to provide a three-square meal for their families and so going to school is a matter of sacrifice, even with the government system of free education, books and other study materials still remain a problem that most parents and guardians cannot afford.

Our Focus:
As people begin to learn and value the essence of education, there comes a dying thirst for educating their children and themselves. But for most people who have never tasted formal education starting from the 'scratch" is always a problem, since they are either too old to sit among children to learn basic alphabets or too loaded with family responsibilities that would not permit such noble sacrifice.
Drive Aid Ghana as an organization that seeks to help reduce poverty through moringa also understands the dying need to educate even as we find ways to provide food and shelter for the rural poor.
The STEP project is to help adults and children with problems 'catching up' in class have another chance to learn, share, play and above all practice basic reading skills,
The corresponding benefits of knowing how to read is left open for you to figure out.

"Empowered to Empower"
Kasuwa is a 19 years old Lady from the Village of “Dagbiriboari” even though life has been hard for her as a young mother, she still face life optimistic about every new day, she was forced into marriage when she was young, her formal husband promised her education, but after she became pregnant with Erica she was abandoned,
Her heart desire is to educate herself, so that she can give the best to her growing daughter Erica.
While her new partner “Bugri” Helps and manages the Moringa plantation of Drive Aid Ghana, She takes adult literacy lessons at the CCS&S center in Damongo, we take care of their feeding, accommodation and health.
Kasuwa is now fast catching up; she is evening learning how to use the computer!

Aims/Objectives
I.Empower rural poor communities through agriculture setups, especially the establishment of Moringa plantations, Jetropha, animal farms etc., as well as develop environmental friendly methods in production, processing and marketing of these products in rural poor areas for poverty elevation.

II.Empowering vulnerable groups (e.g. Widows, orphans, peasant farmers) to increase their health and socio-economic status through the provision of educational/literacy support, job-opportunities and health promotion/provision.

Projects and Updates
Drive Aid Ghana is currently engaged in three main projects, through which other projects will be ushered,
•Green Gold Project: This section of the project will be facilitated with the help of the chiefs and people of the local community and administered by Drive Aid Ghana, we will educate, advocate and solicit for funding, training and initialization of Moringa plantations and other agricultural products in target communities, we also will produce and market the Moringa plant to the local and international markets. This would provide food, job opportunities and a source of employment to the families of the target community.

•Cletek Computer School And Services; this project would focus on training local volunteers to be trainer-of-trainees in ICT and knowledge sharing as well as provide basic ICT services to target communities, among our training course would be;

Windows and file management
Desktop publishing & correspondence
Email & communication
Research and data collection
Basic computer Management & Maintenance Etc.

•Health Promotion and Advocacy project; This section would be handled mainly by Femke Akkermans who would provide her service as a medical doctor in the West Gonja District; the project would help solicit funding and support to promote health activities within the region. The project would also empower women in healthy child care and feeding practice as well as Malaria control and eradication.
