Happy New Year 2012 to all truck drivers out there moving product from one point to another worldwide. I believe that if I have it, a truck driver brought it. Like the laptop I'm typing on right now for this post. It's an HP and hopefully some parts of it were made in America. This is a quick note to wish everyone in the industry a productive and work filled year as is predicted and statistically proven that freight tonnage has remained at high levels despite the tough economic year 2011 was. That tells me drivers will have work, and I know there are over 200,000 available positions open in the USA alone. It proves what that great comedian George Carlin once said.....we just can't stop getting more stuff! But our property hungry society means we can hopefully afford it, or as they say....the economic outlook is brighter and we are spending. Joplin Missouri Tornado and HOS

Looks like the Missouri DOT has temporarily suspended hours of service to aid in the speedy hauling in and out of first response materials in the aftermath of the deadly tornado that struck Joplin yesterday. Ryder Truck Rental Meadowlands - Moonachie, NJ

Trying to get out of this facility with a good running truck is always a challenge. For years this facility has suffered from service issues passed along to it's unfortunate customers. Part of the problem is that they seem to have outgrown this facility. Companies be aware that you should request a quality inpection on your vehicle when picking up your truck that was being serviced. Drivers should do a thorough pre-trip inpection before leaving their lot or you may find yourself riding on the same issues you brought your truck in for. As I write this entry I am listening to the rental dept answering the phone "Ryder guaranteed rental" while I wait for them to locate a rental for me from other shops. Two of the trucks in my fleet are sitting in the shop with reoccurring issues that have not been fixed correctly in the past few weeks. Perhaps taking over Edart Rentals was a bad move for them. I don't know....all I know is I need a damn truck to service our hotel customers in the NYC area!

In order to find, recruit, and retain professional quality candidates to work for a trucking company sometimes concessions must be made. Yes, even in this employer's market, an employer will benefit from a happy driver who is the company's face in front of the customer. Oftentimes the front line crew, the dispatch team should work to improve their interactions with the drivers who face our mutual customers. If something as simple as replacing a pillow in a sleeper, or swapping out for a different truck will make the driver happy, then it is worth it in the end. Although there are many operational fleet restraints placed on a company and a dispatch team it pays to look at the individual situation individually.

We are starting to see a slight increase in calls from retail customers to move product in anticipation of holiday sales. Or at least we all have our fingers crossed. With most of the country above 10% unemployment the recession is still hanging on tough no matter what Wall St indicates in recent days.

Expanding Class A Company Driver Fleet - New Castle, DE

Well, I was informed today by the Fleet Manager that due to extra work from a new customer we are looking for experienced class A commercial drivers that live in or near New Castle, DE, New Jersey near exit 4 of NJ Tpke, or near route 205 or Philly area. All of these locations put the driver withing 30-45 minutes of where he will pick up his tractor every morning for daily runs into Delaware, NJ, or PA. Driver returns to New Castle every night. Pay is $19 per hour to start with benefits after 4 months. This is a full time job guaranteeing at least 40 hours. Those Slow Summer Days

With the economy just showing a bit of an upswing comes the usual summer rising of fuel prices. If we could only get the gas and fuel prices to remain low and steady just long enough to assist in the recovery. Our company has already had to increase the fuel surcharge paid out to drivers to help them keep rolling.

On another note, the summer hiring both of company drivers and owner operators has slowed to a crawl as we are at full capacity now squeaking by with our steady customer work. We anticipate bringing in new owner operators in cargo vans and straight trucks towards the middle to end of August so stay tuned for updates. Helping Truck Owners Apply For MC Authority Online

There are so many truck drivers who I come across every week looking to broker loads from broker companies in this tough job market. The problem is that a lot of them only have their DOT numbers and no Motor Carrier Authority to perform interstate for-hire work. In order to broker loads from some companies truck owner/drivers must work under their own DOT and MC Authority because more and more companies do not lease out their numbers. When these vendor/drivers go to any of the local agencies they are encountering fees of $550.00.

I assist the vendor/driver in filing an online registration and application for their MC authority on the fmcsa.dot.gov website in which they only pay $300 for the initial online DOT registration fee. The process takes me 20 minutes and you immediately receive your MC docket number, although you must wait until getting official documents from DOT in the mail before placing number on your vehicle. You must also file your BOC-3 form either with a process agent or your insurance agent. This sometimes costs anywhere from $35-75 but it must be done to complete the MC application process. I am not a Process Agent and am only assisting the driver in filing the initial application online by navigating the FMCSA/DOT website with them.
