and these days, for me, it is NOT blogging.

it has been a bit over a year since i posted here last.

I spent some time this morning cleaning up my sidebar links - i was sadly surprised to see how many other blogs have become defunct or neglected. blogs i had read for years have just stopped or disappeared all together - all of a sudden i felt left in the dust, wondering what these creative people had been up to. why did they stop blogging? what are they doing now? how are they?

I'm working on a new website.

I'm selling original items and artwork at my local retail pop-up shop in Skaneateles NY. I'm doing a bit of art licensing (mostly with Oopsy Daisy Fine Art for Kids)

I'm still working on renovating out 1896 home.

I'm crazy busy with 2 teenagers in the house.

latest project around here: the barN renovation. its a doozie!

when we purchased this old home a year ago we knew that the barn needed LOTS of work! the foundation and roof were shot - and water damage was starting to ruin the original 1848 interior beams.

last week we started the renovation process. 10"x10" hemlock wood beams were stacked in the basement jenga style to act as temporary foundation braces... and then enormous metal I-beams were slid under the foundation to rest on the Jengas and under the barn. the entire 30'x70' barn was then raised just a few inched off the crumbling foundation so that it could be removed and a new one poured.

the barn was original sized at 30'x70'... because of our our lot size and coverage, existing buildings, permeable and non-permeable surfaces, and the fact that we are also currently adding a 2 story addition to the house- we needed to make the barn a bit smaller to comply for lot coverage and permission to build. kinda stinks - but also kinda OK. by removing the end of the barn we now have enough salvaged wood to repair the standing barn.

the new barn will be 30'x40'. full basement and a full 1st floor. in the area of the basement that we are removing we are leaving all the old foundation stones and designing a patio area with an outdoor fireplace. 14 new windows will be added to allow light and ventilation (they are actually salvaged windows that we restored from a local house). my husband also build a new cupola from the salvaged windows and a few left over shutters from our house. we wanted to keep as much of the old barn as possible - we choose to keep the interior looking as it is (large, raw plank floors, and hand hewn beams). the exterior will be cladded in new wood, and painted a crisp white, the new metal roof will be charcoal grey.

the basement will be used as a workshop...

the lst floor for a party/entertaining space complete with a bar, a sitting area and indoor fireplace, and a 20ft table built from the salvaged barn floors - i have a set of 18 vintage orange chairs that i purchased from my friend at Relevant Vintage.

hopefully to be complete by Thanksgiving for our first big get together!

last summer around this time we had a photo shoot at our house (we have since moved.. so this is no longer our house - kinda strange seeing these images featured now!) The magazine that featured it recently hit the newsstands - and it is full of really great spaces, color, and amazing decor & storage ideas. if you are an Elle Decor or Domino i highly reccommend this issue- it is chock full of great, REAL homes with loads of affordable + doable decorating inspirations. here are a few images from the feature as you can see ( in my artwork and home)... I love color. there's no hiding it! a big thank you to Harris Publications, Small Room Decorating and the fabulous Gridley + Graves photographers!

(we are in the process of renovating and decorating our new home & studio - and 1896 farmhouse - so hopefully there will be another feature soon! :)

its mid summer.. & we are drowning in raspberries, strawberries and blueberries - and i'm LOVIN' it!

i was thinking about it recently as we have been watching a mother and baby deer eat apples from our backyard apple tree. the art inspired a nursery mix of old charm and modern glitz... sure to bring sweet dreams to any precious baby.

the hollyhock flowers are all a bloom in my garden. i have always thought of them as "fairy flowers" - the enchanting stalks could be such a lovely inspiration for a little girls room - dancing fairies, chirping birds, the smell of apple blossoms and a delicate rose necklace.... happy twirling!

scrub a DUB DUB! this design board is inspired by the kids bathroom on my house..

(see small picture in lower right hand corner... its a very large bathroom with a standing shower, marble sink, claw foot tub, cherry wood wainscoting, vintage tile floor - it looks pretty much like it did when we moved it - minus lots and lots of wallpaper!) This is my sons room. Clark is almost 14 years old. He is a collector, an inventor, a scientist, antique and flea market fanatic, and world explorer. His room is fitted with treasures new and old...we were going for a modern Charles Darwin feel... focus and a main goal of clutter control! (Clark is also a bit of a hoarder - I have no idea were it gets that from!) The red cabinets are from Target - a perfect way to display collections & nicknacks - condense clutter and minimize "dusting" time! (there is one on each side of the bed) .... under the double bed are large plastic under bed boxes for legos, books, and projects in progress.) The room also has a desk for homework (or taking mechanical things apart), a giant English wardrobe armoire (there is no built in closet in this old room!), and a 40 gallon turtle tank.

Friday Favorites. (on Tuesday)

jenn over at {cottage nest} shared her Friday Favorites last week and invited readers to do the same. i'm game.. here's what is makin me smile these days..

blog: Mrs. Lilien Styin House. bold color, bling, design, & cocktails, all presented as pure eye candy. dreamy and darling. makes me feel very hip. (if i lived closer to Mrs. Lilien - i'd somehow wrangle myself an invite to one of her happy hours.)

lipstick: i'm a sucker for a red lipstick - i have tried all the stains (all a bit dry and flakey) but this one is different {Just-Bitten-Kissable-Balm-Stain} Revlon rocks. great color, moisture and shine. (todays color: Romantic)

shoes: sometimes function trumps form. sometimes you actually obtain both! on our recent trip to Morocco and Madrid we traveled with only one carry on bag each. ( that meant very, very little room for shoes!) i needed shoes that allowed me to do walking, light hiking, worked at the beach, the desert, the snowy cold Atlas mountains, & could play all day and then take me out at nite in a dress. here they are. The Creston by Naturalizer. a slight heel, rugged traction, arch and support all hidden in an elastic backed ballet slipper. also available in 5 widths!

"go to" jar sauce: crazy weeknight schedules usually mean pasta, sauce and local bakery bread for dinner at least once a week here at home! i'm loving this sauce! Victoria Tomato Basil ( i can get it at Walmart and Target) tastes very homemade -kinda similar to one of my favorite local Italian restaurants

my thought process of creating something new often originates in, places i've travelled, special items i have collected, an experience i've been privileged with, my children and their

ever-changing interests, the design challenge to combine classic & trend,or a precious memory i'd like to make last forever.

the story it will help tell. the visual journey it may invoke.

the place it will adorn & the items it will share it with.

the way it might make one swoon.

a new space, place, or experience inspired by my artwork each week.
