Here's what happened:

Well, last week I didn't get a weigh in because I was trapped in a hotel. This week was pretty much a bust as I am recovering from the flu and I needed to eat. Frankly, I'm surprised I only gained a pound.

I don't know why I'm so slow to get over this yucky stuff. It's been dragging me down every day. Hope it ends soon.

Anyway, the snow from last week is all gone and spring appears to be revving up. Tomorrow I'm going to start my training program to get back to running form.

My goal is to get back to running 6 miles every other day. I'll start with walking the first week, maybe a little jog here and there. By the end of week 2, I should be up to 2 miles. It will take several weeks (if not months) to work back to 6 miles.

Well, it's been a tough week. The weekly weigh-in is likely to be a bust.

I mentioned earlier that I was going on a business trip this week. I'm still on the trip, but added to the fun is the fact that I had the flu. This wasn't your average flu either. It was bad enough that I forgot to bring my razor and my winter coat.

I also spent the first day of the trip in my hotel room, knocked out from half a bottle of nyquil. (mmmm, sleep)

I've recovered for the most part and life goes on. But after fevers and fatigue, I couldn't stick to plan. I had to eat. For the most part I've been good so it shouldn't be too bad.

I'm not going to feel guilty this week. Just keep on pushing forward!

See you on Saturday!

Traveling is the biggest diet killer of them all. When you're at home, it's easy to keep your routine once you've got it. But then, when you're on the road and evening rolls around it can just be so enticing to eat something you shouldn't, or have a drink with your colleagues.

Oh my.

So, I'm going to Salt Lake City for a big to-do. I'll be there for an entire week, meeting and greeting. There will be unlimited opportunities to ruin myself.

But I will resist.

I know I can because I've done it before. Once you've resisted drinking wine in a little Swiss mountain village (after an evening of snowshoe and stars), you can pretty much handle anything the world has to throw on your plate.

The key is keeping yourself focused on what's important. Drinking the wine or eating the chocolate might be fun, but does it fit with your plan for the day?

If you're fit and healthy, this probably sounds psychotic. However, I'm not quite there yet. When I am, I'll be sure to enjoy myself when the opportunity presents itself. For now, I've got to be tough.

Wish me luck!

Today's weekly weigh in: 225 pounds

I'm down 0 pounds from last week, down 25 from Christmas.

Here's what happened:

I'm not going to say that the scale lies. It doesn't. Yet, something is kind of weird about today's weigh-in. First of all, I've lost another notch off the belt (just three more to go). Second, I feel great. My clothes are getting big enough that I might need to dig into the wardrobe for some older stuff. And as I wrote earlier this week, I've got my stride back.

Of course, the scale is only one indicator of progress in losing weight, and you shouldn't be dismayed when it doesn't move. I wrote about that back at the beginning of this site.

I knew there would be days like this because I've done it before. I'm cool with it, though I wonder if I really weighed in at 225 last week.

Anyway, I managed to get better at eating during the week. I also upped my salad intake considerably. In all, it was very healthy and clean eating. Still extremely low on the carbs (in general) and very, very low in sugar. This is probably why I feel so good.

Next week will be a challenge as I am going on a business trip. More on that come Monday.

No exercise yet either, which is something I really need to make time for. The weather is finally starting to turn here and with stride back I'm itching to strap on the shoes for a dash.

Take care everyone!

For a guy just over 6 feet tall, I have pretty short legs. That means I'm not exactly the fastest runner/walker in the world, but I manage to get around. However, today, when I was leaving the coffee shop, I stepped onto the sidewalk and I walked, big stride and no friction. I felt like I was on wheels.

I got my stride back.

When you gain weight, you probably don't notice it at first (or even at all), but your steps get slower and your stride gets shorter. Part of this has to do with the fact that your legs are constrained by your pants, unless of course you buy new pants. The other problem is that your thighs are rubbing together.

I noticed this whole stride thing when I was super heavy many years ago. As I'd been semi-fit for five years or so, I'd forgotten all about it. In fact, I didn't even notice it when I jumped up to 250. I'd forgotten in fact just how good it feels to move.

Very snowy here today, but winter will be over soon and I'll be back on the street running.

Back on 2/11 I wrote about Pants and Clarity. Well, I realized it was time for an update...

I got into those jeans!

Woo hoo!

Today I'm wearing the pants I wrote about on the 11th. They are seriously baggy. In two weeks I won't be able to wear them anymore unless I get big, red floppy shoes to go with them. Amazing.

When I was down at 200, I wore a size 36. I was getting to the point where I might need to go to a size 34. The last time I wore a size 34 I was in the 8th grade.

My wife asked me about my goal this weekend. I told her I was shooting for 185. I haven't weighed 185 since I was in the 7th grade. No kidding.

But it isn't all about weight. The goal weight is the byproduct of a healthy lifestyle, which means changing the way you look at food and stress.

I know what I'm talking about because I've been there. I know what it's like to be that healthy person, how good it feels. I had a good long run of years when I was fit and happy. Kind of amazing that I've gone so far off course after being on track for so long, but it shows that it can happen to anyone.

Why Don't The French Get As Fat As Americans? Americans Eat Until The TV Show Is Over

We have found that the heavier a person is -- French or American -- the more they rely on external cues to tell them to stop eating and the less they rely on whether they felt full," said senior author Brian Wansink, the John S. Dyson Professor of Marketing and director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab in the Department of Applied Economics and Management, now on leave to serve as executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion until January 2009.

"Over-relying on external cues to stop eating a meal may prove useful in offering a partial explanation of why body mass index [a calculation based on the relationship of weight to height] varies across people and potentially across cultures," said co-author Collin Payne, a Cornell postdoctoral researcher. He stressed that further studies should following up with smoking behavior and socio-economic differences as well. "Relying on internal cues for meal cessation, rather than on external cues, may improve eating patterns in the long term.

So, do you eat until the plate is empty or do you listen to your insides?

I'm not going too crazy today. Just eating more than usual. Kind of burned myself out last Saturday.
