Rock A Wish Fundraiser and Artists...

Music can be used as a fundraiser and to promote a good cause. In my opinion this is one of the best things singers can do with their career. Knowing the amount of fans and audience that follow their music, they should all take time from their careers to giving a positive message and example. Musicians become a model to follow to a lot of their fans, and showing people that they play, sing, and spend a little part of their time trying to recollect money to give to a needed organization, helps motivate other people to do the same. Seeing it from an artist manager stand point, this also helps with the artist's image and reputation.

The main purpose still is that the artist is wiling to sing for free in order to unite and motivate people to come to the event and give donations. People already like seeing their favorite artists sing, even more knowing that the money their are going to pay is going to a non-profit organization or charity.

I had the opportunity to help produce and participate in a fundraiser event for the Make A Wish foundation of Puerto Rico. “Rock A Wish Concert” was presented for third year in a row in 2010. For the first time the concert’s theme was in reference to the christmas season. We wanted to put in practice the tradition of giving in this season, by granting a wish to one of the children. At the end of the night, we announced on stage that a child got his wish of going with his family to Disney World.

This concert took place in Hard Rock Cafe at Old San Juan on December 16 2010. With a donation of only $15.00 the audience enjoyed an evening with local artists who volunteered, such as Si Señor, DaZoo, Viva Nativa, Millo Torres, Black Guayaba and Sie7e. Approximately 300 people participated of this activity, achieving to a great extent the purpose of the fundraiser.

Events like these also help artists become even more recognized. After this concert, Sie7e's career happened to grow. Sie7e is a Puerto Rican that sings, composes and plays spanish rock/pop. By this time he already had 2 albums and in 2011 he released "Mucha Cosa Buena" which help him sign with Warner Music Latina. With this album he won the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. Sie7e is known for his motivating and positive songs. His motto is "Mucha Cosa Buena" which means, "A lot of Good" which is what he desires to all his fans and the world. He is constantly talking about love, peace and the changes we need to see in the world.

It was a really great experience working together with an artist like this and getting to see all the positive energy they all brought to the stage that day. Even though these artists may not get to be well known worldwide, participating and putting together events like Rock a Wish are the little changes they are contributing to the world, even if it is in their own little world.

Music Videos Today...

Music videos, an expensive tool but, does it work? Of course!

There is no doubt that a music video is a tool used to help the artist’s career. There was a time when music videos were used to introduce a new artist into the industry and help show the audience “what they got”. Music videos also used to be made to be more competitive in the music industry, because an artist that was already known, wasn’t using it to “introduce” him or herself, but they used it to maintain an image with their fans and to compete with other artist’s videos. For example, MTV was very famous for television programs like TRL (Total Request Live), where the audience voted for the best music video. The problem with this was, people had to wait for the show to see a new video. The audience did have slight control over the artist because they voted for their favorite and the amount of votes decided in which position the video came in. On the other hand, the program, TRL, controlled how long the the video was played, which most times, they cut the video and viewers did not get to see the complete video and had to wait until the next day.

“When music videos were initially introduced on MTV, for the first time, artists had a real opportunity to put themselves out there for the public to judge them and to perhaps garner a following...videos became so powerful they could make or break a single or even a fledgling artist’s career.” says Brian Petchers from Forbes Staff in "The Branding Power of Today's Music Videos".

Today, we live in a time were the audience has total control. Videos are no longer a competition between artists, only for award shows and so, but they are definitely an effective marketing tool. Artists create music videos to satisfy their fans need of seeing their favorite song created into a visual story and see what the artist “still got”. Now, with the internet and social media, the fans do not have to wait for a TV program to play the music video. They have the freedom to search for it themselves and see it anytime they want. In the article “The Branding Power of Today’s Music Videos”, says that today’s advantage over television is that videos are reachable and shareable. This is not only great for the fans, but great for the artists as well because if a fan shares a video they liked, they are doing marketing for them.

I think that today, artists could keep videos simple. The creation of a music video is highly expensive, but artists should still do them because they are important for their fans. For example, there is this new trend called a lyric video. This term came out from the amount of videos uploaded in Youtube that the fans made themselves to be able to follow the lyrics and sing a long at the same time. A lyric video is not as expensive as a “regular” music video, yet it has become highly effective as well.

A video that I saw these days that really impressed me was from the American Idol winner, Phillips Phillips. His music video for his first single release "Home" is a collection, a video montage, of moments in his career. You notice they had to add some images for the editing of the video, but this is a great idea to lower costs on making a musical video, yet it is a really well done and inspiring video.

When it comes to creating our business plan, we should consider following advice from those who have experience and have become experts in business. In Experts Views On Business Plas we can see and research about what these experts have done to attract investors and to build their businesses successfully.

Andrea Cockerton says, an important point to mention to an investor is that your target market truly needs your product or service. To achieve this you must know your audience and focus on what you know your potential clients are going to want from you. This is important to know before starting your business, so make sure you research and write this on your business plan.

Having read Andrea's recommendations about business plan pitches, the most important things I intend to incorporate in mine are:

Prove my business will have success because I studied my target and there is a market and a location that needs my service.
Show the investor that I know how to run a team and that I know how to select a team with the proper expertise.
Show them I know where the numbers will come from and where are they going. Make them notice I know the importance of the business's income and expenses.

Researching further on about the important elements and structure of the business plan, I plan on working hard to also follow David Gumpert (2) advice.

David Gumpert narrowed down the business plan pitch in 5 key components:
• The Executive Summary
• The Company Analysis
• The Industry Analysis
• The Analysis of Customers
• The Competition

I agree with the industry experts I selected for my business plan research. Overall, they both say that the most important sections of the plan for an investor are the target market, the financials and the analysis. With this, I think they mean to prove to the investor that you have done the research in the location of your business and that there IS a potential target. Let him/her know that your target market has a need for your service and that they are READY and ABLE to pay for it and use it.

Make sure you know your financials. Show investors that you know what your costs and expenses are going to be, but even though, that your business will be profitable. Give them a realistic estimate of the sales you want to reach. Show them you have analyzed your business potential in the industry and that you have researched and studied who you are competing with and the challenges you are going against. But above everything, demonstrate that there is opportunity of market growth and a successful future for your business; investors want to have a view of the future of a company.

Finally, I plan on making sure I have an Executive Summary with a strong scope of what my business is about. After doing the whole Business Plan, make sure you do the Executive Summary in case a potential investor asks for this before hand. This should summarize and describe the overall business plan. Give the investor a "teaser" that interests him/her to meet for a further description of what the business is about. Make sure the Executive Summary is 1, 1½ or 2 pages long; not more than that. Write clear concise statements and facts that briefly explain the business.

Nowadays, structuring a business with a new and unique idea is a big challenge. Those who are looking forward to own a small business, are struggling on how to make their business stand out from the rest. Well, differentiation is one essential element in a business but, there are other important components investors are looking for in a business plan. For example, an investor doesn’t necessarily focus first on the originality of the business, as long as if you guarantee your business CAN and WILL make money. Remember, perhaps the business concept will not be original worldwide, but it is original in the context it is going to be built and for this reason it will succeed. How and why is your business going to succeed is the main thing you need to explain to investors.

Andrea Cockerton is an expert advisor when it comes to pitching your business plan idea to an investor. She owns the company Mudhut which she founded in 2005. An investor's focus is going to be on the profit of your business. Show them you know where the numbers will come from and where are they going. Make them notice you care and know the importance of the business's income and expenses. Secondly, prove to them your business will have success and explain why. This can be with one of the 3 points Andrea mentions:

Show there is a market, a specific location or niche that needs your product or service because at the moment, no other business is providing it for them.
Show how your team and crew have the ability to do a better job, even though it is a similar product or service to another business.
Show exactly how it is that you are going to do it differently and better.

Another expert advice is from David Gumpert (2). He is co-founder of the internet marketing firm NetMarquee and has written 2 widely read books: Business Plans That Win $$$: Lessons from the MIT Enterprise Forum (with Stanley Rich) and How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan.

Based on his experience as an entrepreneur and his experience with an internet marketing firm, he gives advice on how to interest potential investors in your business. "As an entrepreneur, it is essential to find ways to build and grow your business without increasing debt. This is more appealing to potential investors" he says according to Experts Views on Business Plans (2012).

David Gumpert narrows down the business plan pitch in 5 key components:

Include the Executive Summary which communicates to the investor the business’s relative size and scope as well as the venture's business and profitability model
The Company Analysis which details the company’s strategic direction as well as the products and services it offers
The Industry Analysis which assesses the market segments as well as provides the investor with detailed industry trends
The Analysis of Customers and The Competition which convey the company’s ability to meet the demands of its customers, and assesses the competitive landscape, respectively.

Gumpert’s expertise in business planning has lead him to say that investors are more interested in the financials that cover some essential parts of your business, than the business idea overall. In addition, he lets us know how investors like to see the passion you have for your business plan. “Another key component that must be conveyed in the business plan to the investor is 'passion'…It is a catalyst to his success and will keep him focused and energized through the challenges and disappointments” (Experts Views on Business Plans, 2012). In other words, the passion you demonstrate you have for your business plan, give investors more confidence in lending you money. Make sure you prove to them that you are serious about getting this business up and running successfully.

Digital Marketing: Can Everybody Really Do It?

Noticed how today, anybody can become a writer just by blogging? Anybody can have a free website by using their blog as one. Anyone can self-publish and distribute, through a POD company and EVERYBODY can do marketing using social media. But can they really?

I am studying and I want to work with music artists marketing. I have learned that marketing is a process of creating and communicating a message to a specific target market. Also, marketing is a creation of strategies that in the end should give us measurable results.

I can admit this, with digital marketing, there are tools that lets us create easier and faster ways to deliver messages in multiple ways. Also, there are tools that provide us with immediate results of our marketing. But I do not think that EVERYBODY has the ability to end with successful results.

For example, now, it is so much easier for an artist to create a fan base with digital marketing and through social media. Artists begin to create an online reputation even before they are famous. They can start doing this themselves, using free social media platforms. Eventually, artists will be too busy with their music. I recommend they find another person who can concentrate and work on their marketing strategies. Contact someone who really knows how to work with social media marketing. A marketing expert can help you with:

Creating a proper Online Presence:

Website - this represents who you are and what you do. For an artist this works as a portfolio and electronic press kit. This is how people find you and see every detail about you. This is the first impression you give a person who has just found you. Make sure you like what they see because this can decide if they can contact you or continue interacting with your work online.
Social Media Platforms - it is important to have them since they are being used by a large market, but make sure they lead the person to your website where your official information is found. Also, make sure your website has the opportunity to share and connect through these social media platforms.

Creating a social strategy – Make sure you are developing a social media marketing campaign that specifies which social channels you are going to use and why you chose them.
Knowing your audience - You should have a complete definition of who you are trying to reach, what are their needs and what drives their decisions. If your audience sees you provide them with what they were looking for, it is easier to build their trust and interest.

Is the Book really dying?

It is no doubt that the digital era has changed the way we look at things, or better yet, the way we use things. I for one was not a big fan of reading when I was younger. The idea of taking a 200 pages book with small font and pages filled of sentences and no pictures, got me sleepy just thinking about it.

Today books are more interactive and for future generations, books will not seem so boring after all. Some are saying the book is “dying” but I don’t think so…I think is growing into something fascinating. Reading is a necessity, I don’t think it is something that will ever “die”. The digital era has obligated books designers, publishers and even authors to interact words with visuals, movements and links. Also, the way we store the books we purchase and want to keep, is more convenient. We have a variety of portable devices full of books that we can carry anywhere we go.

Like I said, the book isn't "dying", they are just evolving in the digital era, as a matter of fact, schools are starting to use digital books in their classrooms. They notice a higher motivation in students for reading and learning using these interactive books.

Writers used to have the power and control over information and narrations, but now, consumers do. People had to read whatever they were given in schools or in their homes if they wanted to keep themselves properly informed. Now, consumers have the power because if they don’t like what they see, they will not use it or buy it. There are so many forms of receiving information today that if you do not make it interesting, it won't get to far.

What I am trying to say with all this is, that the physical composition of pages put together to make what we call a "book" now, is not going to be a “book” anymore. A “book” is becoming something more. Is a form of digital pages that with the click of a button can take you to another place.

There are 3 prototypes for the "Future of the Book" that the company IDEO has done that can show you exactly what I mean. These prototypes are just the beginning, I think the “book” can evolve even more.

The ambiguous definition of "Power"

In the entertainment business we will deal a lot with interacting in groups and in those groups we will always have to deal with "who has greater power." Here is what I think about a chapter I read called "Motivations Underlying Power Dynamics in Hierarchically Structured Groups”. Reading this helped me understand better why people are motivated to improve their power position. This talks about different theories that have come out of this behavior within groups and that have being formed to understand power dynamics. For example it mentions the "dominance behavior" which is a type of dynamic used to establish power. It is when people who talk more, who are louder and who start more social interactions often receive higher status of power in the group. It mentions and defines other strategies that people use for power maintenance.

Many people relate the word power with strength, force, authority or control, but if we study its true meaning we can see that it’s much more than that. After reading this about power I have learned that power’s definition has to do more with influence and with the ability or capacity to perform or act effectively. If we were to make this the official definition of power, then we would interpret that everybody possesses power. In every interaction with others, all members will have a possible position of power.
The chapter says that “the power you wield is dependent on the relationships you have with group members and no group member is completely powerless, the interconnectedness of components in as system means that all group members have some influence even if it's to resist or to defy the group.” This is also highlighted in the begging of the chapter when it says that “support from other group members is vital to improve or secure one’s position”. This means that if a specific person in a group has been given the position with most power is only with the support and approval of the other members.

I think everyone has there own definition of power, its a term too ambiguous. My personal opinion about everything stated in this chapter is that there will be a sense of power in every interaction between two or more people. This is because differences exist between every individual and depending on the circumstances, power will be handed automatically to who has dominant influence in the interaction. For example, who ever dominates the topic, who ever has more knowledge or experience etc. The size of the power will also depend and vary on context, genders, cultures, education and even people’s values.

If you are ever in the need of researching and finding references about court cases and law terminology, Entertainment Law Update is a good website to use. In a one hour long podcast, any attorney, law students or others, are provided with analysis and commentaries to use, about any legal issue. These "up to date" podcasts talk about cases that have already been in court and others that are about to go to trial.

I used this website to learn more about the entertainment industry on legal matters.

In the Entertainment Law Update Podcast, Episode 6 - Celebrity Identity Theft, I found the following:

The case of Carly Simon v. Starbucks:

Starbucks (record label) is being sued for breach of contract and for not reaching the terms agreed in the contract with Carly Simon.

We must keep in mind how essential it is to complete a contract. You may want to include in the contract a way or situation where you can terminate it, and this way you have a clear description and both parties are aware of it.
This case helps reinforce the value of an agreements between 2 parties.

Each party is trusting the other party to fulfill the requirements.
Sticking to the contract helps you build credibility and a good reputation.

Starbucks was managing Carly Simon's record sales but they didn't accomplish what they promised.

If you're going to work as a manager, you need to make sure you are doing a satisfying and successful job for your client. At the end, the way you work with the career of your client is going to affect you too.

California’s new paparazzi statute:

This I found really flattering, not only because I hate paparazzi, but also because it reduces a lot of potential risks for an artist.
The California new paparazzi statute says that it is illegal to take photos of artist during their personal actives and if a photo is obtained by improper means and published without consent, the artist is eligible to sue.
Artist already know they are going to live a life full of “stockers”, but they should also know they are able to have moments of privacy and freedom.
This statute helps keep us motivated of learning the laws in each jurisdiction as we travel.

Each of us is responsible of knowing the laws and regulations that apply as we move to different place.
As an artist and manager, is good to keep this in mind because of all the traveling you will be doing.

An example of how strict the laws are now with paparazzi who violate a celebrities' personal intimacy, is what happened this week with Kate Middleton's topless photos. The photographer AND the magazine who published the photos where penalized and ordered by the French court to block and turn in Kate's photos in 24 hours.

This was in another country, but with all the easy access to media, this has become a concern and legal issue worldwide.

From the Entertainment Law Update Podcast, Episode 13 - copyrights, trademarks, fair use and net profit suits, I heard about the following case:

Nafal v. Carter (the rapper Jay Z):

This case is about copyright infringement.
The interesting thing is that Jay Z was being sued for performing and recording commercially the song "Big Pimpin'" which seems to be a song originally written in 1957 in Egypt.
Nafal sues clamming he has the copyright ownership of the song.

This song falls under the Copyright Act of 1909 and not the 1976 Act.

With this, the court proves that Nafal does not have standing to the lawsuit because he is not the "exclusive" owner of the song and didn't have full rights.

Under the old act, Nafal would also need permissions to use/own the complete song.

Jay Z was out of the lawsuit and no infringement was applied.

The thing to keep in mind here is, the only way you have the right to sue is if you are the exclusive owner of the work. For this reason, make sure you register under copyright, all art work you created yourself or for the use of your company, that may be seen and accessed to any public.

Always be one step ahead of those that try to take a piece of your work and make sure you know your rights; but most important, LEARN THE LAWS!

If you're going to have an event and artist management company, register your trademarks, copyright your works, make sure your artists has all the licenses needed for performance, music, adaptation, distribution etc. Make sure you acquire the correct license from the correct owner before anything goes to the public. If the case it that someone it trying to sue you, you have the evidence that you did things correctly...if your going to sue somebody, make sure you really have the intellectual property ownership.

Artists & Managers, Watch Out!

Industry Liabilities:

An artist manager must be aware of how the artist's image is being used in every circumstance. The artist manager should protect the artist representation in other medias that the artist may not be directly involved with. For example, in the gaming industry, games that have to do with music, use artist avatars to represent their physical appearance. There is a case where the group No Doubt is suing the videogame publisher Activision for allowing players to use their avatars to sing other artists songs in Band Hero. No Doubt said they were unhappy because they've been turned into a "virtual karaoke circus act". Their avatars are doing dance moves that the original band don't really do and Gwen Stefani's voice can be change into a man voice if her avatar is being used to perform a song from another band. I think this is where an artist manager has to be aware and defend the artist's image because this could change the perception viewers have about them. Even if the situation only bothered the artist, the artist manager should step in and support the artist's request to eliminate this type of representation.

What if the artist's image is affected by their own negligence? In February 2012, the artist M.I.A. flashed her middle finger in front of a camera of the most viewed performance of the year, the half time show of the NFL Super Bowl. In this case the artist manager should direct the artist with all the possible consequences for this type of behavior. They are artist who in some cases may act controversially to express a point of view. In this case, I think M.I.A.'s gesture was unnecessary because it didn't have a meaningful purpose. We can see this has affected her image because "some organizations, including the Parents Television Council, are not pleased with M.I.A.'s performance. They likened her controversial gesture as the selfish acts of a desperate performer." says Cynthia Hsu in FindLaw. The artist manager should try to get the artist to give an apology to the public, but in this case, no apology has been executed.

A big responsibility for an artist and artist manager is to fulfill the deal of giving a performance once it is established. Setting up a concert takes a lot of time, effort and money. It is the artist responsibility to show up the day of the event, especially if he or she has been paid. The singer Flo Rida is being sued for canceling a concert in Australia the same day it was supposed to be given. Flo Rida says it was due to him not being happy with his accommodations.

It is understandable that artists have requirements for their performance, but this should be detailed in the ryder and agreed to before the day of the show. "The legal action likely centers on the promoter's claim that Flo Rida breached his Australian concert contract. In the United States, and apparently in Australia as well, a breach of contract by one party generally entitles the non-breaching party to sue for damages." states Andrew Chow, JD in FindLaw. For now, Flo Rida is being held responsible for breaching the contract and is being sued to cover damages such as compensatory damages and punitive damages. My opinion about the facts found upon the case, is that if Flo Rida already had being paid to perform, it is going to be really hard to overcome this lawsuit by just saying he wasn't satisfied with his accommodations. Flo Rida and his manager should go over the contract and indicate exactlly want went wrong with the requirements and give a reasonable excuse for his cancelation at the last minute.

Out with the old marketing strategies and in with the new?...Not quite.

What is marketing? Marketing is everything you do to put your product or service in reach of your wanted target. Marketing a product includes marketing people. Managing artist is one of the most important jobs in the entertainment industry. This allows artists to have someone in charge of their career from a business perspective.

For the old marketing strategies AND for the new online marketing strategies, the main and most important thing is to know the target your product reaches. For example, a music artist will depend on the type of music, age, language and gender, among other things to determine it's target. For every marketing plan, whether your marketing a product, service or person, the first thing you need to learn about is your potential target.

Since the use of the internet, it has become easier to determine your target's specific lifestyle, taste, likes and dislikes. This has helped marketers receive instant feedback from the consumers; and with social media platforms artists receive instant feedback from their fans.

Before the internet, marketing strategies might have been in person, but not necessary more personal. In those days, you reached people face-to-face and asked them questions, filled out surveys, gave them offers in hand, wrote down their information to contact them by mail or phone and even invite them to be in focus groups.

These old marketing strategies haven't necessarily stop existing, they are now being used with the facility the internet provides. Combining the old marketing strategies with the new online strategies has become beneficial for marketing. In my opinion it has become more personal because you can get in touch with your target directly and quicker. Back in the old days, you weren't able to know if the person you were going to talk to would really be interested in your product until you asked. Now, you can post your product's information in places you know your target will be interested in searching. It used to be the product who had to reach the consumer, but now consumers can reach the product on their own as well.

It can me sent to multiple people at the same time, gives you measurable feedbacks and this helps with target segmentation.

Newspaper or printed ads:

These are very helpful and necessary. Never take for granted the fact that some people still like it "the old fashion way" and read the newspaper and magazines. Find the magazines most convenient for your product and use them.
The good thing is, that the design made for these printed ads can also be used as banners in websites and social media platforms.

Direct Mail:

Email has become the fastest way of reaching each person individually. It helps send your promotions, invitations, ads and future events to the exact people you want. The only thing we need to be careful with email is not falling into SPAM. Companies are still using direct mailing as a marketing tool as well.

Commercials:

Television can now be seen via internet. It is essential to create commercials that you can play on a computer with the same quality as seen in a TV. Websites have the capability of playing a video while you are browsing for something else. Social platforms such as Youtube, Pandora, Grooveshark are playing short video ads before playing the music or video selected by the consumer. So producing a video commercial for marketing strategy is great because it can be used in various places.

These are only a few ways old marketing strategies have evolved and come together with new strategies. Using the internet as a marketing tool has not only revolutionized the way marketers see their consumers, but how consumers see them. In the music industry, this is very important to know because fans now have a closer approach to their artist. Their connection is stronger, there for, the way the artist is managed has become more meaningful as well.

Sponsorships Are A Great Deal

In the entertainment business world, a lot of things will depend on negotiating and deal making to succeed on the outcome of your projects. For example, SMG is a venue management company that administrates many facilities worldwide. In these venues, negotiation meetings are held on a regular basis. A lot of venues sustain themselves with sponsorships. The marketing department is in charge of making deals with companies that could serve as sponsors. Having sponsorships is very important because this gains something in return for your company.

I decided to conduct an interview with Gabriela Torruellas because she will help me learn more about the process of negotiating for sponsorships and how it is beneficial for a company.

Gabriela works as a marketing and guest services assistant in the Coliseum of Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot for SMG. Her job requires to find new clients with sponsorship opportunities for the building. When she finds a potential client, she sets a meeting to go over terms and options that may benefit both companies. She also meets with the sponsors the venue already has to go over or renew the contracts. Gabriela has been given the authority to negotiate with some of the most important clients of the coliseum. These include "Banco Popular" and "El Nuevo Dia", which are two of the most powerful companies in Puerto Rico.

One of the issues I could imagine when dealing with people from powerful companies, is how to handle their high status. It is not easy to have a personal opinion about someone and not demonstrate it. During a negotiation it can be hard to separate personal emotions and just focus on the problem.

"Learning to deal with emotions takes practice. I have learned to separate the people from the problem by staying focused on what I need to accomplish for my job's sake. Thinking about the outcome so much, just doesn't give me any time to think about personal opinions what so ever." says Gabriela.

Negotiating with a person who has a lot of leverage can be intimidating. Fear is a hard feeling to hide from the other person. Employees of "Banco Popular" and "El Nuevo Dia" know they have power over other companies. The Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot is also a powerful company, in fact, it is the most recognized venue of the Caribbean. So being a client of the coliseum can give you more power and exposure. Gabriela uses this power in her favor.

Gabriela stated, "When I step into the negotiation meeting I always remember I also have power and control. I try to leave outside the room any intimidation I might perceive from the person because inside the meeting we both have the same amount of power and want something from each other."

A lot of times sponsors are the ones who contact the coliseum for a negotiation. This is when the marketing department searches for possible resources that might interest them from that sponsor. Gabriela uses the client's interest in making a deal to acquire services that may benefit the coliseum. I really like how exchanging services really helps them to receive mutual benefits. "Most of our negotiations are reasonable and end up being mutually beneficial. We give them sponsors and they provide us with services; pure and simple." Gabriela expressed.

I learned that dedicating time to prepare is necessary and crucial for a negotiation. Doing research is a powerful tool, actually, it can become your weapon in case someone tries to play any tricks on you during the negotiation process. Make sure you know the company's background, history, resources and services. Search for any partnership they may have with other companies and try to investigate on the agreements they have. If you know all the company facts this can help you identify lies.

This is what Gabriela has to say about this:

"Preparation is the key to each of our negotiations. Once we find what the company can offer us, we even prepare a pre-contract. We hand it to them so they can read carefully and make the changes they want to bring up in our next meeting. And when I negotiate alone, I take a letter from my boss that indicates my authority to negotiate because they have tried to use this as an excuse to cancel the deal."

Dealing with the Stress of Finance...

Money and financial problems, is one of the principal cause of stress. These days, a lot of future professionals (graduate students), like myself, will already have a debt of loans after graduation. In addition to this, if we want to begging our own business, this will be added to that list of expenses and we might doubt of our capabilities of doing it. But what we must do, is make it be worth it and show a result out of our investment in education. Wether it is starting your own business or by finding the job of your dreams.

I for one try to encourage people that if they are going to make a life investment and begin to fill out there lives with debts anyways, it might as well be in your education.

Robert Kiyosaki says in his book, Rich Dad Poor Dad that “Our mind is our most important asset.” I completely agree with him. I also agree when he says that it is great to acquire knowledge on multiply subjects, so, to invest in learning some financial skills is very important in any industry. If you’re planning on creating your own company, even though you hire an accountant to run the numbers for you, you should know about basic fanatical concepts because it is your money and effort invested in there.

Yesterday I took a seminar about Managing Stress. In this seminar, one of the principal reasons for stress in collage students that were highlighted was financial issues. I think that anything we do not understand will automatically cause us stress. So what we can do is spend time learning about the matter you are not understanding, which in this case is finance.

Also, living in such a highly paced and busy world we must learn how to manage stress. Even though if we have the job of our dreams or the company of our dreams we won’t always be happy about it and we will encounter things that will cause us stress. Maybe they won’t all be financial issues, but it is better to have and know a way of dealing with stress. This is important because you learn how to cope well when something is causing you stress but you need to continue your job as if nothing is bothering you. To do this takes practice! So it is better to begin learning how to do it now, because this will be as important now as it will be later.

Having a hobby is a good way to begin lowering your stress. In addition to constantly study and working, learn how to divide your time to entertain yourself with things you like to do to help you relax.

The Shark Tank Season 3 Episode 10:

If I wanted to relate finance in an interesting matter with entertainment, and make it fit along with the thematic if this blog, than I would definitely talk about "The Shark Tank". I chose this episode because there are a lot of things we can learn in terms of business planning. It’s like an episode of “Things you should NOT do.” No matter in what field your business may be, there are some keys of administration that are in all business categories.

Inactivity:

I think what happened to the owner of “The Ave” was some expressions he made. Part of planning is knowing what you would do in times of adversity which Nick, with comments he did, didn’t represent he was willing to put much more effort into his company. In a new growing business you must be active. He said things that leaded The Sharks into not trusting his commitment with his business like “he wasn’t in the store anymore” and “he was living the LA life.” These comments could represent that you only want money to “live the good life”. To real business men, especially investors, you cannot say things like this because, even though they know it’s all about money, they want to make sure they will invest on someone putting all the effort into gaining even more $$$. They want to feel that the risk they are taking with investing is going to be worth it. When presenting yourself to investors you must be careful with how you express yourself, maintain your humbleness and make them feel their money is safe with you...Sharks don’t have time to waste and are definitely not going to throw their money away.

Undedicated:

Phrases like “A little too soon” and “Way too early”, where the Shark's concern with “Barkem’s to go”. As soon as I saw his presentation I thought to myself the same thing. I don’t think he dedicated a lot of his time in planning his business plan. He had the idea without thinking through all the rest of the resources it would need to move it along to become a real business. Good Ideas can crash for not having dedicated into them, time of investigation, planning and marketing. Before having asked for money, he should have at least done more investigation, surveys and visualize where did he want to take this product. You should have actual results to back up your point. For me it looked as if he was just making a hypothesis about his product.

“Your trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist.” - says Barbara. I agree, just because it was a problem for you, and you created something to make your life easier, doesn’t necessarily mean it is a problem for everyone else.

Unprepared:

From the "Brewer’s Cow" we can learn how in a business presentation you have to demonstrate you know your product. How much does it cost you to make it? How much are you selling it for? How much are you distributing in what timeframe? And most important, how much are your sales? These “ice cream makers” didn’t have any basic calculation based on their sales, expenses and income. As Robert tells them, “you got to know your numbers...there are certain things in every business you need to know everyday and that is what do you need to do in order to break even.” It seems as if they wanted the investors to do all the mathematical work for them. They are investors, not accountants. I think it is every business person responsibility to know what they need and how they can get there. These are basic questions any investor will asked you...they want to know how and why did you come up with the amount of money you're asking for. So be prepared to give them the reasons. Also, I must include, If the presentation is going to between more than one person, than they should to take turns of who is going to speak so it looks organized and prepared.

Unfocused:
“Go Go Gear”, here is a good idea, with good intentions, and a specific market that was brutally managed because of "dreaminess". They where focusing more on where they wanted to go, rather where they were right now. Dreaming about the future is good, but you have to plan how you're going to achieve it, in order for it to come true. Sometimes our emotions can unfocus our path towards our goals. We can't let them get to us, neither good or bad emotions. For me, this was a great idea fro the fashion industry, and as we can see for Daymond also. But, the "Go Go girls" seemed desperate, so he notice he could take a great deal out of them. You have to know the value of your idea in order to be able to protect it and demand money over it.

Learning with TED

I find TED's concept about giving global conferences very impressive. It's the first time I know about them but surely it won't be the last. From now on, they have themselves assured another viewer.

With this video I've reinforced my opinion on how videos impact our lives these days. The speaker, Chris Anderson demonstrates how TED's concept really works. He mentioned how video impact is surpassing other ways of learning and communicating such as writing. I think writing has it's own original way to inspire but I agree that video communication exceeds the impact because human learn a lot better through vision. Even if it's only someone speaking, and nothing else, video enables more body senses where sight and hearing are one of the most used for communication and learning.

When describing TED, Anderson says "In TED we are obsessed with openness."; "We are talking from many to many."; "Not only the stars benefit from this." Expressing things like this are what inspire their viewers. They are letting them know what they want to accomplish with their concept. He is influencing the crowds to interact, respond to speakers and become speakers themselves.

TED overcame the challenge of reaching others culture and generate in them the enthusiasm and engage participation not only as viewers but some have become inspiring speakers of the program and in their countries.

Anderson shares the model of the "crowd, light and desire wheel". He teaches us how this is causing his called phenomenon "Crowd Accelerated Innovation". He uses it to describe how video sharing is being strategically used by people, sometimes without knowing and realizing the mayor impact it will have on others.

With videos, uniting crowds interested in the same matter has become easier. Videos are being used to educate, and as Anderson said, learn from one another and learn directly from great leaders also. Education is becoming a cycle. In most times, it used to be a one way communication, now, the audience interacts with the educator and educators may learn from them also.

Each story prooves how, now, we have the tools and access to show ourselves to the world and demonstrate the world what we do. People see what happens in other places and can learn from them.

The stories about dancing 6 year old and the unicyclist are a demonstration of the “desire” part of the wheel. As Anderson states, "to describe what you see in the video is really hard to put in words." On the other hand, the last story, about Kibera, touches each point, "Crowd" (in Kibera they are already united for the same reason), "Light" (they opened themselves to the world) and "Desire" (they create inspiration to others with what they are doing).

I think it is a great thing what TED is doing. Great leaders not only speak to teach, but they also appreciate others for their interaction as viewers. Each viewer will feel individually appreciated for their viewing time and this challenges and motivate them to one day become speakers as well. Individualism is an important way to reach the attention of someone because everybody wants to know they are part of something. We can see when Anderson give thanks to Christopher Makau for what they learned from him that night. This shows people that what they are doing will be appreciated.

I love how they are using this concept to motivate education and inspiring others to become great leaders and educators. This is something I will consider for my professional future. Video sharing is a good strategy to use for a company to present their innovations, vision and ideas. The fact of speaking in TED is an intimidating challenge, but if someday I have the opportunity, I will more than glad to.

Associations that help the entertainment industry...

Associations have become an essential asset in every profession. Professional Association in specific, form, unite and keep informed professionals from the same industry in different aspects. I think that, once you become a professional it is very important to become a part of something bigger than only yourself; joining an association is a great way to start! You will interact, learn from and keep connected to people with the same working interest as you. And most important, this will definitely improve your personal brand strategy and marketing strategy for your personal company.

Associations help keep your education up to date and modernized. As technology moves along so quickly, it is important to look for ways to keep learning new things and professionals associations are supposed to do so. Associations have people in charge, selected by the members themselves, who are responsible for recruiting, educating and informing others.

ACSPPRI is a puerto rican association for professionals in social activities coordination. It is a private organization, voluntary and non-profit and registered with the State Department. It helps promotes the best interests of members and encourages that they respond to the demands of our society in all kinds of social activities. Develop the professional growth of its partners to achieve excellence in the quality of services provided and to promote greater recognition of this profession.

Associations like ACSPPRI are a good way for recent graduates who want to work as an event producer to start. As said before, it is a good way to begging branding and gaining experience.

What happened during his "Metamorfosis" World Tour in Puerto Rico

“It hardly seems fair actually, for the Latino music gods to bestow so much musical genius onto one man, but they did. That man is Ricardo Arjona, the singer/songwriter from Guatemala. Arjona, now 22 years deep into a career, made putting on a fantastic performance look much too easy.” Says The Daily Journal San Mateo’s Homepage in reference to Arjona’s passed concert in San Jose, California. For artists like Arjona, "making it look easy" comes out naturally. He proves it to the world every passing years he gives performances.

Arjona is right now in a world tour of his new album, ‘Metamorfosis’. Since the beginning of his career Arjona has always manage to create a relation with his listeners through his music and during his performances. As The Daily Journal Says, “rest assured the bond between artist and music, music and fan is stronger than ever.”

Arjona’s fans know that what he sings comes from personal experience. He is willing to give a little from his life just to help other people in theirs. In this concert he talked about how relationships aren’t meant to be easy. How love is a confusing, marvelous, stressful but enjoyable thing. After he gives examples of how we are living now days and how relationships are being held, he beggings to sing his songs to give support to what he’s saying. His lyrics filled with similes and metaphors are what motivate people into reflecting and comparing the words of experience with their own lives.

"Most songwriters are lucky if they strike lyrical gold once in their careers — Arjona has done it consistently for 22 years. His words are blessed with a Midas-esque quality — able to hurt, heal, sooth, torment and frustrate on a variety of levels...his songs feel the same way today as when they were released 15 years ago."

I can assure you, that statemente is true. I’ve had the experience to participate as a viewer in this concert in given in Puerto Rico last March 3rd, 2012. Comparing it to his last performance in the island, 2 years ago, I can just say that in time and Arjona only gets better and better. Unlike previous shows, Arjona planned, designed the concept, scenery and script that stands out for it's rotating platform on the stage that helped demonstrate a different context for each theme.

Expressions like "Puerto Rico, good evening! It’s been too long since we’ve been here, 2 years now. We wanted to let you know that, we think everyone in their lives wants to, somewhere in the world, in some space or in someone, leave something important enough so they can be remember and loved; and we are not the exception." are what makes Arjona's shows "cause euphoria in the island" and do consecutive sold out events. He let's his fans know how important they are to him and his group.

"Arjona truly is one of the last, great, pure singer/songwriters left in a Latino industry overtaken by less-than-stellar talent. But what never gets old is the reminder every now and again that the music gods still have vessels like Arjona at their disposal when they want to show the world what greatness should sound and feel like." Finishes saying the Daily Journal.

To be given the opportunity to work with artists such as Ricardo Arjona would be an honor. I think that artists who touch emotions and relate to their fans are the ones that will on live forever. The most important connection that Arjona has with his fans is because he demonstrates that everyone in the world, has passed or will pass through similar things; he connects people with something that no one, famous or not famous, rich or poor, can escape from the essence of humanity.

2008: He sold out 3 Wisin & Yandel's concerts at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot with 38k in attendance and more than $2.3M in gross revenue.

These concerts got him to a #1 ranking in the total revenue Billboard Concert Charts.

2009: Sold out 4 Wisin & Yandel's concerts in the same venue with 53k in attendance and more than $2.8M in gross revenue.

In this show participated surprise artists like Akon, Romeo from Aventura, T-Pain and Enrique Iglesias.
The 4th and last show of this concert was announced the night before by the singers and sold out immediately the next day. (Another broken record.)

Social Media & Mega-Events...Super Bowl XLVI

The NFL Super Bowl is considered to be one of the most important national mega-event in the United States internationally transmitted.

Mega is a prefix that means one million. A mega-event is generally considered to be a large-scale event that has global publicity and or is associated with large-scale impacts.

By definition, Mega-events stimulate mega expectations and provoke mega reactions. These days’ social media has a huge impact in mega-events and so does it vise-versa.

Society’s expectations for this event, grows more and more demanding each year. Social media’s reviews, comments, and reactions are highly important to the productivity of this event. When the Superbowl is over, conversations in different websites cover just about everything that has to do with the event, from the commercials, the halftime show and the plays in the game itself.

This year, a lot of social media networks interacted directly and simultaneously with the event, such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. According to Yahoo News, Twitter made a new record with the most tweets per second during the Super Bowl game. Twitter involved this event allowing users to tweet at the Super Bowl account (@SuperBowl2012) and add hash tags about the Super Bowl. Interacting in these networks has become a common trait and part of our daily routine. Companies are aware that social media has become a large trend and are taking advantage of this. This is why the effect of the Super Bowl commercials is so important. Companies know that the public has the facility to comment online and give a lot of value to their opinions instantly.

“These days, ignoring conversations on social platforms would be akin to not answering the telephone in years past”, said Taulbee Jackson, CEO of locally based digital marketing firm Raidious, which was hosting the command center and managing two shifts a day through game time Feb. 5.

This year, the halftime show was performed by Madonna. This show has such a high impact in society, that up to today, people are still talking about it. People see the performance over and over again as if it was the first time they are seen it. The impressions are extraordinary. Even those who perhaps didn’t not like the show, when they see it again they just have to stay focusing on it. Mega-events impact society with excitement and eagerness. Everyone is waiting for the moment and just waiting to quickly engage conversation about it. People are still commenting about Madonna’s performance, trying to come up with an unswerving opinion. I think this is what Madonna’s shows are all about.

Mega-events in general, unify humanity. We notice how millions of viewers are unified to be part of a common purpose. Families and friends worldwide come together to experience and participate in this event. The Super Bowl will continue on being a high impact event in our society throughout the years. As social media keeps on evolving, it will also keep on affecting mega-events and making them evolve along with it.

In the Entertainment Industry the branch that has to do with sporting events is very interesting. Considering it one of the most viewed, participated and recognized around the world.
