This is one of my most popular and successful lessons for 3rd or 4th graders. I guide them through a very easy technique for creating two symmetrical profile faces as we explore positive space, negative space, optical illusions, and the creation of a 3D vase.

I have done this project a number of times with my 4th graders to get them excited about our trip to the Art Institute of Chicago field trip where American Gothic by Grant Wood is on permanent display. We looked at the role the painting has played in pop culture to create a spoof. I created a Spoof-o-Matic to help generate ideas or creatively challenge students as they create. I lead them through the composition to make sure they learn about portrait drawing including the straightforward pose and three-quarters pose, both of which are found in this one portrait. When the drawing has enough similarity to the original, they are ready to add their own creative ideas to make a spoof.

I finally packaged my Bubbling Beakers STEAM transdigital lesson on TpT. It is a 40 page step by step visual guide for creating the forms from shapes, color mixing, drawing and painting a background in perspective and using complementary colors.  Explore

What is childhood without magical snowfriends that come to life and take you sailing across wintry night skies? I love The Snowman Story and share it with my k-5 students as often as I can.
