Holders Michelin Athletic retained the Tayside Cup as an extra time goal from striker John Foley gave them a 1-0 win over Fairfield. In a game that Fairfield dominated the early stages and had chances to take the lead Michelin Athletic gradually fought their way back and they themselves had chances to get in front. As the game went into extra time it was Michelin who got the all-important 1st goal. John Foley cut in from the right hand side and Fairfields goalkeeper could only watch helplessly as Foleys deflected shot rolled past and into the net.

Fairfield then threw everything they could at Michelin to find the equaliser. Chances came and went for the Fairies none more than when Ryan Rigden’s shot hit the post and bounced to safety. Stand in Michy keeper and m.o.m Neil Craig pulled off numerous saves to break the hearts off all the Fairfield players as Michy held on to the trophy they had won the year before .

Michelin manager Steve Irvine was full of praise not just for his team but also Fairfield who played there part in an excellent game.

An obviously disappointed Fairfield were denied completing a hat-trick of silverware in there 1st season, but this didn’t stop every player and official staying to congratulate the Michelin Athletic team as they collected the Tayside Trophy.

One of the most pleasing things for me as match secretary of the Dundee Sunday Morning AFA was not just the fact it was 2 of our clubs contesting the final for the 3rd year running but that the game at Whitton Park was played in a fantastic spirit and was a great advert for Sunday football .Credit must go to Michelin Athletic and Fairfield for making our showpiece final the occasion it deserved to be for the large crowd who attended.

Fairfield proved too strong for Michelin Athletic as they came from a goal down to win the McGuire trophy. It all started so well as Michelin opened the scoring. Fairfield didn’t panic and gradually took control of the game. Kevin Milne equalised and went on to complete a 1st half hat-trick. As much as Michelin tried to get back into the game it was Fairfield who scored again as Barry Heggie scored from the penalty spot to all but clinch the trophy. Credit must go to Michelin as they kept going and reduced the deficit near the full time whistle. In the end Fairfield deserved their 4-2 win. Fairfield who in there 1st season have now added the McGuire Trophy to the Strathmore Glazing Premier League.

This Sunday sees the end of the season showpiece as Fairfield and Michelin Athletic go head to head again, this time for the Tayside Cup played for at Whitton Park with a noon kick off. Michelin as holders will be looking to retain the trophy but will need to be on top form to try to prevent Fairfiled from completing a hat-trick of silverware in their 1st season.

Michelin know all about the strike power of Fairfield’s main man Kevin Milne and if Michael Jorgensen and Ryan Rigden are also on form then The Fairies have a formidable goal threat. Not to be out done though, if Michelin can get the service to John Foley and Mark Gorthy then this game has the makings of a fantastic final to end the season.

Cutty Sark made it to the final of the NRG League Cup after a 3-2 win over Fairfield. In a cracking game it was Cutty who held there nerve in a tight encounter. A double from Shaun Birse and Gary Middleton with the winner were the goal heroes in what was a cracking team perfromance. They will meet Fintry in the final as the Fintry side got revenge on Michelin for last week’s McGuire semi-final defeat by winning 4-2 last night at the Michelin grounds.

Fintry Athletic are also through to this week’s Alex Smith final where they will play Douglas Athletic. 3-1 down to Harlequins 5 minutes into the 2nd half they turned it around with 4 goals in the next 15 minutes to lead 5-3. After that there was no way back for the Quins and Fintry ran out comfortable 8-4 winners. On target for Fintry were Richard Carlysle with a hat-trick, doubles for Jamie Belli and John Penman with Scott Davidson completing the scoring.

Last night’s Mcguire Trophy Semi-final between Douglas Ath and Fairfield was abandoned due to an injury to the Douglas goal keeper and will be replayed next Tuesday 14th May.

Michelin Athletic used all their experience to reach consecutive Tayside Cup Finals as they beat Welfare outfit Menziehill 3-1. They now join Fairfield in making the end of season show piece an all morning Final. Holders Michelin will be reluctant to give up their grip on the trophy. In a cracking game at Whitton Park, Michelin had to fight all the way and rely on the prolific double act of John Foley and Mark “Goofy” Gorthy to fire them to victory. The two strikers have been in outstanding form all season. Foley added to his tally with a brace and Goofy the other.
Michelin were brought down to earth as Douglas Athletic beat them on Tuesday night to progress to the Semi Finals of the Alex Smith trophy. After the tie finished 4-4 it took penalties for Douglas to progress where they will face Fairfield.

In the league Tayport hammered Harlequins 8-0 on Sunday then went one better on Tuesday as they took all 3 points from title challengers Fairfield in a 3-1 win. On target for the Fifers who are finishing the season on form were John Kerr, Todd Crozier and Darryl Rennie.

Harlequins recovered from there mauling at the hands of Tayport and bounced back to beat Dundee Social Club 3-2. Damien Coogan making a rare appearance, John “Pass It” McIntosh and top goal scorer Ryan “The Quiet Man” were Harleys scorers.

Fintry Athletic also had a fine win as the beat Cutty Sark 7-2. In games that are usually tight affairs it was a surprise that the winning margin was so big. In amongst the goals for Fintry were Bobby Buchan with a hat-trick, Jamie Belli a double with David Burry and Richard Carlyle singles.

This coming Sunday Michelin Athletic take on young Welfare side Menziehill in the 2nd Tayside cup Semi-final. Holders Michelin will be feeling confident that they can go on to defend their crown. They will have to be at their best if they want to join Fairfield in the final. This game should be a tight encounter and the factory side will need to use all their experience to get past Menziehill.
