TRAI is planning to introduce DTH inter comparability and probability for Indian DTH viewers. On the lines of mobile portability, to stimulate the sector's growth, chairman J S Sarma said. "Entry price in DTH is coming down on its own. Growth will now be a function of quality and pricing. Portability in DTH may reduce entry barriers for users," Sarma said in an interview

Subscribers in the country currently have to pay for installation each time they switch their DTH service provider. DTH service providers could be accused on two counts. One is that they have 'blocked' their set top boxes, preventing the set top box supplied by one service provider from being used to access the services of the other.
Currently, service providers are using two technology platforms -- MPEG2 and MPEG4 -- for offering their services, allowing them to extend the argument that equipment of one will thus not be compatible with the service of the other. "All these are issues that will be looked into. DTH will do well if service providers can offer more than cable operators," Sarma said.

Airtel Digital TV is increasing its number of annual packages, offering discounted rates to keep its subscribers locked long term.

The DTH service provider will add eight annual packages, complementing its current Super Value offer of Rs 2600.

Says Bharti Telemedia vice president-marketing Sugato Banerji, "Annual packages are increasingly popular with our DTH customers as they see the benefits of price protection for a full year with the added convenience of just a one time recharge. Customers will be able to enjoy 12 months of viewing while making payment for only 10 months."

"Apart from consumer benefits, the annual packages will not only bring us assured revenues for a span of 12 months, but will also help in improving our operational efficiencies," Bannerji adds.

The annual packages for the new DTH customers are at three different price points - Rs 3450, Rs 4350 and Rs 5450. These will include the installation cost along with 12 months' subscription.

For existing customers, the new packages are at five different price points - Rs 1088, Rs 1265, Rs 1850, Rs 2750 and Rs 3850.

While the Super Value Pack (Rs 1088) will include Sony, Star and NDTV channels, the Economy Pack (Rs 1850) will also include the other GECs like Zee and Colors along with WorldSpace Radio.

Mega Pack (Rs 2750) will include sports channels ESPN and Star Sports. Also in the bouqet will be HBO, MGM, Cartoon Network, Discovery, Travel & Living and Pogo.

The Ultra Pack (Rs 3850) will also include Star Cricket, Zee Sports, Ten Sports, Neo Sports, and other language channels.

"Our subscriber base is nearly one million and our ARPU is in line with the market range," Banerji avers.

I installed 4 types of DTH setupbox in abu dhabi and dubai.

Sundirect in abu dhabi is working fine with 180cm dish and clear sky view. still date there is no problem.

The Dish tv in dubai is working fine but the signal varies few mins but there is issue in picture quality.

TataSKy installation is high in UAE/Dubai/Sharjah because of quality.

The dth is one way communication system so there no one find from ware your accessing the satellite.

About dream box you can only access tatasky, DD direct plus and dish tv because it is MPEG2 technology.

i found it many shops in dubai/abu dhabi/sharjah. but you have to buy smart card to view pay channels.

this is a simple article to explain how to have two different DTH connection in same house. there are three different types of connections for a DTH in a multiple tv connections in a single house.

1. in a single Dth connection for multiple tv's. in some setupbox (STB) there is a line out facility which will help to have another connection to tv. but you will receive same channel in both of the tv's because the STB is the controler for both tv's.

2. you have to buy second STB and have a spitter ( this is device connect at LNB to share the signal for both STB's) hardware to connect two STB's. there is no need of any dish.

India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has proposed that winners in the upcoming licence auctions for broadband wireless access (BWA) - read mobile WiMAX - will be able to offer voice as well as data services.

But the dispensation comes at a price. Instead of calculating the BWA licence reserve price at 25 per cent of the 3G licence reserve price on a per MHz basis, the DoT has proposed, following recommendations made by the Telecom Commission, that BWA licence winners pay at least 50 per cent of the base 3G licence cost.

While the addition of voice is no doubt a boost to WiMAX prospects, supporters of the technology will no doubt baulk at the premium price tag. The WiMAX Forum had already stated before the latest DoT announcement that it was working with the Indian government to try and reduce the BWA reserve prices that were calculated at 25 per cent of the 3G price.

By contrast, the cellular camp believes the DoT hasn't gone far enough in its latest proposal. "The WiMAX lobby had argued that reserve price should be lower to enable them to make broadband services affordable. If they are allowed to offer voice services also they should be treated at par with existing mobile operators bidding for 3G spectrum," a GSM industry representative is quoted in local press report.

Earlier this month DoT announced that 40MHz in the 2.3GHz band and 40MHz in the 2.5GHz band would be made available for BWA. In the 2.5GHz band, 20MHz has already been set aside for state operators BSNL and MTNL. The remaining 60MHz is to be auctioned to three more operators who are allowed 20MHz each.

Prospective 3G operators will be allowed to bid for one pair of 5MHz channels only: 5MHz in the 1920-1980MHz frequency band and 5MHz at 2110-2170MHz.

Bharti Airtel is looking at simultaneous rollout of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and direct-to-home (DTH) services following the Cabinet approval on downlinking norms for IPTV Expected to be launched with in two months time. the two services will have differential priced, with DTH targeted at the mass market and IPTV for broadband (high-speed internet) users.

“We are now putting our launch (for IPTV) together. Right now, we are examining different options internally. Both the launches could be simultaneous or we could have them in phases. What is certain is that IPTV will be first launched in Delhi while DTH will be rolled out on a much larger scale,” Bharti Airtel president for Telemedia services Atul Bindal told ET.

Telemedia is Airtel’s business division that provides broadband and fixedline services to over 2.5 million customers in 95 cities. “Over the next few weeks, we will firm up our plans. IPTV will be an integral part of Airtel’s media business because DTH allows us to go wide and IPTV allows us to go deep in 6-8 top cities,” he said. On the pricing, Mr Bindal said: “IPTV sits on top of broadband. It gives me an opportunity to cross-sell and deepen my relationship with existing customers using local loop or broadband or both. My pricing for IPTV will be triple play (voice, data and video). For DTH, we’ll explore single play, double play as well as triple play and introduce it in around 5,000 towns and villages.”

DTH services are currently being offered by TataSky, Dish TV, Sun Direct and Reliance Communications’ Big TV. Asked about profitability, as none of the DTH players is currently making money, Mr Bindal said: “We don’t believe new businesses are a drag, if chosen correctly.

We are uniquely positioned to leverage the existing technological knowhow and are exploring ways and means for cross-leveraging our relationship with Airtel customers.”

Globally, IPTV is considered a niche segment as broadband access is not uniform. Industry estimates suggest that India will have around a million IPTV users by 2011 and for DTH, the number would be over 23 million.

Videocon Group will launch its direct-to-home (DTH) service by October-end and plans to invest Rs 10 billion in the venture over two years.

Bharat Business Channel Ltd , the company which will launch the DTH service, has signed up with SingTel for six Ku-band transponders. The DTH venture is being headed by Anil Khera who was earlier in charge of Videocon's Sansui and Kelvinator brands.

"We have taken six Ku-band transponders on SingTel's ST-1 satellite. We are investing Rs 10 billion over two years and are launching the DTH service by October-end," Khera tells Indiantelevision.com.

Videocon will operate its DTH service under the D2H brand. The company will use MPEG-4 compression technology and plans to kick off the service with 200 channels.

Videocon will manufacture the set-top boxes (STBs) at its Aurangabad factory. It will use Irdeto's encryption technology.

The uplinking will be at Greater Noida, adds Khera.

Bharti Airtel has 923,472 outlets across India as in end-June through which it sells prepaid, postpaid, and value-added service offerings.On pricing, Bindal said the rates would be similar to those of existing DTH operators and higher than cable TV rates. DTH firms such as Tata Sky Ltd, an 80:20 joint venture between the Tata Group and Star Group; Dish TV Ltd, an Essel Group company; and Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Chennai-headquartered Sun TV Network Ltd and Malaysia’s South Asia Entertainment Holdings Ltd, charge between Rs30 and Rs300 (exclusive of taxes) a month for the service.

“We entered the consumers’ home with voice, then it was data and broadband, now we want to give them a ‘one knock at the door experience’ with one bill and one service provider,” he said. “Airtel will be the only telco that can do and make a difference as we have the underlying technology in terms of billing and convergence. This will not be possible for a standalone DTH player.”

“Eventually the game plan for Bharti is to get into all the potential ‘telecom real estate’ and be a full scale telecom service provider. And DTH service launch by the company is one step in that direction. Arpus (average revenue per user) in DTH is much higher than the telecom,” said Alok Shende, principal consultant, Acceindia Consulting. “Bharti is readying to offer multiple services (to the consumers) after the DTH launch. It just allows a lot of creative bundling strategy to happen.”

Direct-to-Home (DTH) war is about to hot up with Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) Group (BIGTV), Bharti Airtel (airtel Digital DTH) and Videocon Group(D2H) all set to join the indian DTH market.

Reliance Communications, India's second largest mobile services provider, said it would launch nationwide commercial operations of its DTH service from August 15, under the name BIG Digital TV DTH (BIG TV).

A Reliance official said the company would market its DTH service aggressively with the aim of becoming the No.1 DTH player within the first year of operation.

The tariff rates would be competitive and subscribers would have greater freedom of choosing from a wider variety of channels than what is presently being offered by current players, the official said.

The company is believed to have completed its trial runs in over 2000 towns and cities among customers of other Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani (ADA) Group companies and has reportedly received overwhelming response.

"The feedback was extremely positive. We will launch the DTH service with the aim of becoming No.1 in the market. We have already ordered 5 million Set Top Boxes from vendors in Korea and Taiwan," the official said, adding that the Set Top Boxes would come with a digital video recording facility.

Agrees Salil Kapoor, COO, Dish TV India Ltd. "The (MPEG-4) technology might be advantageous from the operator's angle. Compressed data files transmitted through satellite using MPEG-4, a high definition platform, will have better quality."

Though the service providers would have to bear the same cost of bandwidth irrespective of the technology used and MPEG-4 technology would make picture quality better, yet, "the price of the set-top boxes will be higher" for the customers," Kapoor said.

Indian natural calamity alerts on DTH TV screen

Indian satellites run by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will alert state agencies and the public about imminent natural disasters through direct-to-home (DTH) television broadcasts.

"In the next six months, (state-run) Doordarshan will relay warning signals from Insat transponders in Ku-band on impending disasters through a DTH receiver linked to the national disaster management support system in New Delhi," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G. Madhavan Nair told IANS.

"The advance alert will enable state agencies and the public to prepare for any natural calamity and minimise damage to life and property," he added. "As against expensive and heavy equipment consisting of an antenna, power supply system and a TV booster, we have developed a lighter DTH receiver that can be hooked to a TV set for receiving advance warning through voice or signals even while watching any channel," Nair pointed out.

ISRO has commissioned state-run Bharat Electronics Ltd to manufacture about 1,000 DTH receiver sets for supplying to state agencies and other stakeholders.

"The receivers, costing less than Rs.10,000 per set, can be installed by state governments in disaster-prone or coastal areas for alerting people in advance about heavy rains, cyclones, high-speed winds, tsunami and other natural disasters.

"The novel project will be launched on a pilot basis by this year-end using Doordarshan's DTH platform," Nair said after delivering the valedictory address at an international seminar on disaster management.

Private DTH operators such as Tata Sky, Dish TV, Sun TV and others will subsequently be roped in to offer the service on their platform as they are also using ISRO's Ku-band transponders to telecast their bouquet of channels.

Reliance is ready to launch BIGTV (DTH) with 5 million DTH STBs

Direct-to-Home BIGTV(DTH) services subsidiary of Reliance Communications. Big TV has placed an order for 5 million set top boxes (STBs) with an aim to procure the same at 25 percent reduced cost as compared to the prevailing cost of procuring MPEG2 STBs. Infact Reliance will gain not only on the cost front but also on the quality of transmission as its order is for MPEG4 standard based STBs.

The company has reportedly received half of the consignment and the other half is expected in a week’s time. The vendors for the order include Hyundai, UEC, Thomson, Hunmax, Homecast, Koship and Kaon Media.

There will be four to six models of STBs on offer to subscribers with some of the models providing an option to record the programmers.

Testing have beed carried out with ten individual television sets using two dish antennae on a luxury cruiser recently, Dish TV Mobile division has just crossed the major technological hurdle of setting up an MDU system in moving vehicles.

This technological breakthrough allows DTH Mobile to set up individual screens in luxury buses and train compartments, where each passenger would be able to watch channels of his or her choice.

In the previous system, all passengers had to watch only a single channel that the bus operator would run from the moving DTH.

Notably, Dish TV Mobile had already started offering personal vehicles with dish antennae and there have been some steady sales. But the problem remained with offering channels of choice to individual TV sets in a mobile carrier.

Home-grown DTH majors Dish TV and Tata Sky are mean while beefing up their portfolio of channels with additional transponders in the face on competition. While Tata Sky is likely to be accommodated on one of ISRO’s forth coming satellites with Ku-band capacity – possibly GSAT-6/ INSAT-4E, Dish TV has plans to double its transponders with an additional 14. This space will be available to Dish when its sister company Agrani’s part-owned satellite, ProtoStar-1, is launched towards end-July.

Tata Sky’s new capacity requirements are not known. According to a senior ISRO official, allocations of any additional capacity is part of the contract and would be made on a satellite close to the operator’s present allocation or in this case at 83 degree East longitude where INSAT-4A is located.

Growing enthusiasm

The enthusiasm for the DTH sector has stumped the satellite space provider ISRO. According to ISRO, the list of players could grow longer. For operators there is the task of picking and choosing amongst the new channels that are being announced almost every week. On last count there were 100 channels from about 50 companies waiting for licence from the Government. Scrambling for the limited space available, broadcasters are willing to pay carriage fees ranging from Rs 1 crore to upwards of Rs 2.5 crore per year.

The new ventures from Reliance, Bharti Telemedia and Videocon depend on fewer transponders (between 6-8 each) but are said to be using the MPEG 4 compression technology, allowing more channels per transponder and larger bouquets.

New DTH player from Sterling Group is set to launch DTH (ETH Air TV) soon

Sterling Group is set to launch DTH services by early 2009 under a new business ETH Air TV. In an attempt to differentiate its services, the company is positioning itself as a platform with a focus on educational content, and that’s why Education to Home or ETH.

An application for a licence is pending with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting but talks with financial institutions, vendors, technology partners and broadcasters have started. The company is expecting to close all its agreements as soon as it has its Letter of Intent from the Ministry.

It already has an agreement with ISRO, and has been promised six transponders on the Insat 4G satellite which will be headed spaceward around May-June 2009; an interim accommodation could be arranged before that if ETH Air TV is ready with its backend infrastructure.

There are more channels than space on current DTH platforms, and ETH Air TV could accommodate these homeless, new channels who are willing to pay carriage fees to reach consumers, according to an industry source. It would also be tapping into regional markets with more local, or city-specific content, focussing on coaching classes, for example.

No service would be viable without the popular general entertainment channels though and ETH Air TV will offer the same but will add more niche content to its portfolio, both acquired and possibly even developed in-house. The service will be offered on mpeg4 (or with superior compression technology) Set Top Boxes that it will source from vendors and could be significantly subsidised at launch.

A Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-S) technology will be able to accommodate around 120 channels; a DVB-S2 option will take the number of channels to more than 160. Market players Of the six licensees, there are three DTH players in the market already, including Sun Direct, which is a strong player in South India benefiting from the Sun Network’s popular content. Reliance ADAG’s Big TV and Bharti’s DTH venture are also expected to launch soon. ETH Air TV is nonetheless confident of breaking through the tough market by positioning itself differently.
Sterling Group’s telecom interests were placed under Siva Ventures which has an eight per cent stake in Tata Teleservices. However, the company is housing its DTH business under Shanmugam Realty and Housing Ltd, according to sources.
