The Dubai Airshow closed its doors today on a successful week which saw US$63.3 billion worth of orders for aircraft, maintenance services and flight training programmes.

Visitor numbers broke the Dubai Airshow record with 56,548 people attending, making the 12^th edition of the Dubai Airshow the biggest as well as the most colourful yet, as the halls, pavilions and chalets displayed the colours of the UAE national flag in celebration of the nation’s 40^th anniversary in two weeks’ time on 2 December.

The latter part of the third day of the Dubai Airshow saw the order book rev up to US$55.4 billion after some tough negotiations earlier in the day, with the Airbus A320neo the big winner.

Florida-based Spirit Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for 75 Airbus A320 family jets – 45 A320neo (new engine option) and 30 A320 aircraft. The MoU should be converted into a firm order by the end of the year. The deal is valued at US$7 billion.

The conclusion of the Gulf Aviation Training Event (GATE) conference at the 2011 Dubai Airshow saw the collation of the first ever GATE Memorandum.

The GATE Memorandum identified four main areas of concern over the current and future training of Gulf-based pilots. They include the quality of ‘outsourcing’; maintenance of high-quality training standards of both incoming pilot candidates as well as existing pilots; the use of ‘evidence-based’ training methods; and regular and careful industry reviews.

The second day of the Dubai Airshow opened with the inaugural Gulf Aviation Training Event (GATE) conference.

The conference was attended by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline.

The GATE conferences are addressing Boeing estimates that show by 2030 there will be 466,650 operational pilots worldwide – 32,700 of which will be Gulf-based – in accordance with the current shortage of qualified pilots in the region.

The second day of the Dubai Airshow concluded with an order for 50 Airbus A320neo aircraft, worth US$4.6 billion at list price, with an option for 30 more by the end of the year.

ALAFCO, the Kuwait-based international aviation lease and finance company, finalised the purchase of the aircraft, an increase of the initial agreement for 30 A320neos, made earlier in the year.

The first day of the Dubai Airshow proved to be historic for the aerospace industry with the first aircraft order totalling US$26 billion (Dhs95.4 billion).

The 12^th edition of the Dubai Airshow was officially opened by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain.
