Until now, most customers have had to obtain their cash refunds at the airport, adding to the time spent there. Kanoo and Premier Tax Free aim to make Tax Free Shopping all that more enjoyable and easy, by offering refunds in cash at city centre locations. Our aim is that customers will spend more of their time enjoying shopping and visiting London, rather than additional time at airports” explains Nabeel Kanoo, Senior General Manager of Kanoo Travel.

The Kanoo Foreign Exchange branches in the Haymarket and Knightsbridge are conveniently located close to the main tourist and shopping areas of London, including the well known luxury department store Harvey Nicols. In addition, Kanoo offers a full foreign exchange service enabling tourists to receive their refund in the currency of their choice.

The Tax Free Shopping concept allows non-European residents to pay less for purchases made within the European Union. UK legislation stipulates that tourists must spend more than £30 in one store and on the same day, in order to become eligible for a VAT refund. They then receive a VAT refund voucher at the point of sale and are required to present their goods to customs upon leaving the EU. With VAT currently at 17.5% in the United Kingdom and due to increase to 20% in 2011, this equates to significant savings for visitors from the GCC, Middle East, North Africa and beyond. Premier Tax Free offers tax free shopping in partnership with over 10,000 luxury retail outlets throughout the U.K. and over 3,000 in London alone.

Kanoo and Premier Tax Free plan to further extend this service to customers next summer, to include new cities and new refund destinations in the Middle East.

For more information on how to shop tax free and details of your nearest Kanoo branches in the U.K. visit www.kanootravel.co.uk, for France www.kanoofes.fr, www.kanootravel.com for all your travel requirements or www.premiertaxfree.com

The Golden Age of Online Retail

It is no secret that during the past three years, the retail industry has tanked, and no part of it more so than luxury. But during this time frame, a new breed of entrepreneurs has sprung up and sized the opportunity: they took the glut of luxury goods and created membership-only, sample-sale websites that bring the excitement of a door-buster sale online, with prices as much as 80% off. To say that these websites have become the hottest area in retail is understatement. While second-quarter sales of luxury retailers and department stores increased in the range of 5 to 10 percent over the year before, some of the online ales websites zoomed 200 or 300 percent. The online private sample-sale category generated $ 1 billion on revenue last year, and some say it could grow to $8 billion in the next five years.

All of the websites attract shoppers who crave what the can't afford and love luxury brands and exclusivity. The sales are launched daily and usually run just 36 to 48 hours, which turn shopping into an event, and they train customers to check their mail in-boxes every morning for fresh, new merchandise and to buy things they didn't even know they wanted. While actual elbows may not be flying, at 9 every morning, hundreds of thousands of shoppers are being whipped into frenzy over discounted Carolina Herrera dresses or Bulgari sunglasses.

As in the heyday of department stores, when it was Harvey Nichols via Gallery Lafayette, every private sale website has a distinct identity.

Adam Bernhard, former executive of an international business and and founder of an inventory clearance company, launched in Los Angeles HauteLook.com back in 2007. His selling point is "casual sensibility". Currently the website has 2.7 million registered members and it is "Free to Join".

The concept proved a fortune. Several sales start daily and last about 48 hours. Products include women's, men's and children's apparel, home and beauty products, food and wine at discounts up to 75%. Online shoppers can grab deals such as Skinny jeans by 7 For All Mankind for $99, while the retail price is $218. The choice of brands includes Harve Leger, Bulgari, Taschen, BCBG and more.

<img src="http://www.lduhtrp.net/rk118ltxlrpAEJFEKJCACBFKIGGE" alt="Storewide Sale! Most shops specialise in something, but some seem to sell everything, ancient and modern, from pumice stones to traditional wooden tooth cleaners.

Whatever you buy, make sure to bargain, and in between bargaining take time to chat to the sales guys - they hail from everywhere: Mumbai, Islamabad, Isfahan and even Kiev. Accept all offers of tea - the socialising is as much fun as the shopping. And the shoppers are just as varied - you'll see foreign tourists haggling over suitcases and local ladies looking for the latest textiles.Souqs are generally open from Saturday to Thursday 10am to 1pm, shutting for lunch and siesta, and reopening around 5pm until 10pm. On Friday (prayer day) they open in the afternoon.

Souk Al Bahar sheduled to open in December

New 130-store Arabian-influenced shopping mall is scheduled to open in Dubai in December.
Souk Al Bahar is Dubai’s newest shopping, dining and entertainment destination with over 130 stores and an extensive waterfront promenade featuring the best of its 25 restaurants and cafés. Situated on The Old Town Island overlooking the Burj Dubai Lake, Souk Al Bahar will be a vibrant waterside hotspot for Dubai’s socialites and visitors.
Souk Al Bahar is developed and managed by Emaar Malls Group LLC, the shopping mall subsidiary of Emaar. With a gross leasable area of 164,700sqft, Souk Al Bahar has an eclectic retail mix that showcases the Arabian heritage through veritable mix of carpet dealers, perfume shops, fashion, furnishings and jewellery. A dynamic mix of restaurants and cafés frames Souk Al Bahar’s waterfront perimeter presenting an extraordinary dining experience with views of Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest tower.

“Souk Al Bahar will be a lively new shopping and entertainment concept for the city,” said Rashid Doleh, CEO, Emaar Malls Group. “It will be a perfect lifestyle component that will appeal to all sections of society. Being in the heart of Dubai city, and situated in one of the most prestigious development in the world - Downtown Burj Dubai, Souk Al Bahar celebrates the joy of living in one of the most dynamic cities in the world.”
Souk Al Bahar is an ideal complement to Downtown Burj Dubai, where some of the world’s most ambitious developments are planned including Emaar Malls Group’s flagship project, The Dubai Mall, and Burj Dubai. A direct footbridge connecting Souk Al Bahar and The Dubai Mall will ensure that visitors have convenient access to Dubai’s best shopping, dining and entertainment avenues through the evening hours.
“Emaar is undertaking two distinctly different mall developments within Downtown Burj Dubai. While The Dubai Mall will be a premier lifestyle and shopping destination, Souk Al Bahar is a celebration of modern living in Dubai. Residents and visitors will find everything they need in the Downtown Burj Dubai,” added Doleh.

Carrefour region's top retailer

Carrefour has been named as the Middle East's top hypermarket operator in the latest ranking of Top 30 Middle Eastern and African retailers from Planet Retail, a UK researcher specialising in global retail trends.
Carrefour, which ranked eighth in the overall Middle East and Africa list, was followed closely by its archrival Casino, the region's ninth biggest player.
Carrefour, a French retailer that is operated by Majid Al Futtai Group in the Middle East, has achieved rapid growth in recent years by continuing to roll out new stores in and beyond its GCC stronghold, targeting countries such as Kuwait and Jordan, while at the also extending its network in Saudi Arabia and UAE, according to Planet Retail.

However, while Casino has a presence in Africa via franchise agreements and also has plans to open about 16 Géant stores in Saudi Arabia via its new franchise partner GSL, it is unlikely to overtake Carrefour.
"If Casino's hypermarkets are to threaten Carrefour's ambitions for dominance in the region, a surge in openings is needed," said Oliver Heins, a retail analyst at Planet Retail.
"Casino's campaign has lost impetus in countries such as Dubai where there have been no further openings since a Géant store opened in the Ibn Battuta Mall in March 2005."
Local Middle Eastern retailers Emke Group and HyperPanda has also performed strongly in the region in the past year, and appeared in 12th place in the Top 30, after expanding its Lulu hypermarket concept in the UAE, Yemen, Oman and Kuwait.
Market entry into Saudi Arabia will be achieved this year, with plans for up to eight stores in the medium term, according to Planet Retail. KSA-based HyperPanda, in 13th place, is also becoming a major contender, with a target of 25 hypermarkets and 100 supermarkets in Saudi Arabia by 2010.
"Latest sales data for Africa and the Middle East continues to highlight the fragmented nature of the region's retail market. In 2006, the region's Top 30 grocery retailers accounted for just 29% of overall modern grocery sales in the region, compared with 59% in Western Europe," Heins said.
"The region's more lucrative markets, especially in the Gulf, is contributing to higher levels of concentration. Domestic and international retailers have established a growing presence in the Gulf due to high levels of spending, relative political and economic stability and a greater demand for modern shopping facilities and international products." Source

Deira City Centre to open 24 outlets

Deira City Centre (DCC) yesterday announced its plans to open 24 new outlets by this September.
