There were times when the westerners were somnolent of visiting Dubai because of its strict Muslim laws and customs. But with the rising tourism, Dubai has evolved as a comfortable destination. It has become more tolerant and liberal as compared to past. However, the Arabs are likely to take offence at social blunders only if they are out of ignorance. The policy of warm welcome of the guests is humbly followed if the visitor acquaints himself with local ways of doing things. Being a foreigner, one should not forget certain unwritten basic etiquettes to be followed in Dubai to perceive respect all over.

Dress Code:

In Dubai, dress code is rather liberal as contrasted with other cities of Middle East. Though in some religiously dominated areas both men and women are expected to cover most part of the body from head to foot, the areas accommodating expats may not follow the strict dress code. The people can wear western outfits but over-revealing clothes are a major turn-off.

Addressing Terms:

It is important to greet local people in a correct way. The names of Arabs can be confusing to the new people though, but it is highly necessary to follow the designated principles of addressing in emirates. In general, one can address “Sayeed” to a man and “Sayeeda” to women. The rulers are typically addressed as “Your Highness” and the senior members of ruling families are addressed as “Sheikh”.

Greetings:

“Salam alaykum” is the most common greeting in the Middle East and “Wa alaykum as-salam” is the correct reply to it. Some of the common used greetings are:

Body Language:

One should accept whatever is offered for drinking or eating but austerely keeping in view that left hand should never be used for eating or drinking as it is considered to be unclean. Always use the right hand. In addition to it, one must not show his sole of the feet or shoes in front of anyone. The feet should be kept flat on the ground and avoid crossing the legs.

Other Do’s and Don’ts:

One must not offer a drink to an Arab unless sure enough of the fact that he drinks.
One must not walk on prayer mat or stare at the person offering prayers.
One should not try to enter mosques without prior permissions.
Beckoning someone with a finger is highly impolite and considered to summon a dog.
During Ramadan, eating, drinking or smoking anywhere should be avoided. Creating noises is also not acceptable.

Situated in Al Garhoud district, 4 km (2.5 mi) southeast of Dubai, the Dubai Airport serves as a major aviation hub in the Middle East. The airport is the home-base of Dubai's International Airlines, Emirates and Emirates Sky Cargo and is maneuvered by Department of Civil Aviation. The four-terminal airport has been recorded as the 17th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and 11th busiest by cargo traffic.

Transportation to Dubai Airport

Road:

The airport is well-connected by one of the longest intra-city roads, D-89, stretching from Deira Corniche and running perpendicular to D 85 (Baniyas Road). From Deira, the road progresses south-eastward towards Dubai International Airport, intersecting with E 311 (Emirates Road) past the airport.

Bus:

Local buses 4, 11, 15, 33 and 44 can be boarded to reach Terminal 1 and 3, while bus 2 connects with Terminal 2 of the airport. Dubai International Airport Buses provide air-conditioned transport into the city centre and over 80 hotels in the city.

Rail:

Dubai Metro, serving the airport will be operating 2 lines through the airport. While, The Red Line (Dubai Metro) has 2 stations at the airport and provides services to terminals 1 and 3 between 5 a.m. and 12.30 after midnight, the Green Line will operate from March, 2010, at another station in the Airport Free Zone.

Dubai Airport is the only airport among the top 10 airports worldwide in terms of international passenger to show positive average growth of 18%. Camel Polo in Dubai

Rice with Chicken in the Bottom

This Arabic recipe is from Celia Ann Brock - Al Ansari’s “The Complete United Arab Emirates Cookbook.” Here’s the special recipe for you to pamper your taste buds and fill in your appetite.

You will need : Bezar(Arabic curry powder), salt, chicken (1 kg/2.2 lbs), cardamom, turmeric, basmati rice (2 cups), vegetable oil, garlic, sliced onions, tomato puree(available in the market), saffron (soaked in water), yoghurt, lemon slices, spices, dried limes, a cooking pot, a pan, a wet cloth or wet paper towel.

Prepare this dish in a non-stick pot, for once it is cooked, the process of transferring it to a round rice platter can be tricky, Care must be taken to avoid breaking the crust which forms around the bottom of the rice pot. It is an attractive and mouth watering dish to present which is usually served with sliced limes plain yoghurt and raw sliced onion. This grand dish can also feature meat or fish instead of chicken.

The basic ingredient for an Arabic spice mix is called bezar or bizar. Widely available in the local grocery stores, it is similar to the Indian curry powder. These ingredients might cost somewhere around 11 dhs (US$3) and could be made very easily by grinding up whole spices or even buying the mixed powder ones.

To start, clean up the whole chicken (1 kg/ 2.2 lbs), rub it with salt, bezar, turmeric and cardamom and let the chicken absorb the mixture by keeping it undisturbed for 15 minutes. While the chicken is left to be marinated, boil 1 cup of basmati rice in water and put salt in accordingly.

Depending upon the number of people to serve, one can manage the quantity of rice from 2 cups or 4 cups.

After 15 minutes get over, take out the chicken from the mixture, by now most of it must have been absorbed by the pieces. Now take not more than 1 table spoon of vegetable oil and heat in a wide pan that can hold all chicken pieces. Once it gets heated, put the chicken pieces in the hot oil and let them brown. The browning of chicken would definitely seem very tempting because of the aroma of all the spices including bezar and specially cardamom.

Once it gets brown, take out the chicken from the pan and put in some more oil to brown some garlic and onions and add some grounded loomi (dried limes), chickpeas (just a little bit), and tomato paste with a little water. Tomatoes can be used in the form of tomato puree available in the market which happens to be a thick paste of tomatoes.

Now it is time to assemble everything. Put some oil in the pot in which the dish is supposed to be cook. Let the amount of oil be such that a crust is formed at the bottom of the pot. Add rice, chicken and hot onion/ tomato mixture. Press everything with a tablespoon and then pour in the saffron that had been soaking in hot water. Let the mixture heat in the pot and cover the hot pot with a wet cloth or paper towel. Let the mixture simmer for 20 min and then take it off the heat. Let it cool for 10 minutes.
Now flip the pot upside down to obtain the dish at a platter and decorate the dish with coriander leave to make it attractive. Garnish the dish well. So for the record, you have prepared “Rice with Chicken in the bottom”. To serve, use lemon slices and yoghurt with sliced onions.

Meat Fried with Spices

Another very simple dish to make is Meat fried with spices, but take my words, it comes out to be the most delicious dish on earth. It is called ‘La ham nashif’ in Arabic or meat fried with spices and is a simple one pot dish. The spices in the dish include the bezar, ground cardamom and turmeric.

Cut the lamb and clean to prepare some lamb chunks. Boil them in water for 45 minutes to make them tender.

Fry some sliced onions in the in the vegetable oil until they turn golden brown.

Add spices and garlic to the onions after they brown in the oil.

After a few minutes, add the lamb pieces and some water to make thick gravy.

Heat it till it forms a thick curry and serve it all up over basmati rice. The spices bring a miracle to the tender lamb pieces.

Dress Code

However, Dubai is more avant-garde than Abu Dhabi and as a mark of respect; it is more advisable for women in Abu Dhabi to dress accordingly. Long trousers and long skirts and shirts or T-shirts with sleeves that cover at least the upper arm should be considered for wearing in Abu Dhabi, and the rest of the areas in the United Arab Emirates.

Women are expected to wear knee length skirts or dresses, or full length trousers. Sleeves must cover the upper arm and they should be dressed conveniently in a moderate fashion, so as to avoid the needless attention at their respective workplaces.

An appropriate dress code in Muslim countries like Dubai is a very important aspect. It is recommended to dress conservatively. If you're on a cheap holiday to Dubai and are only concerned with beaches or top hotels, then this doesn't apply to you. Usually, women wear loose clothes to cover their hair, legs and arms. Men in Bahrain are not permitted to wear shorts. At the same time, tops without sleeves are forbidden strictly. Preferably, clean clothes and unobtrusive perfume is recommended. Inside the mosques, shoes are strictly prohibited and it is expected out of people to talk very politely, lowering their voices while inside a holy shrine.

A few more traditional rules include that in traditional areas, like the markets, villages and souks, and other such areas, short skirts are not considered to be proper for women. Long skirts below the level of the knee are preferred. Western tops like those with deep neck lines are strictly prohibited. In general, men can still be dressed less formally here, however, some places tend to get dusty and sandy, so make sure that you don’t wear your best clothes here or they might get ruined. Flashy gowns can be worn in restaurants and the dress rules may vary from one restaurant to another. The thumb rule is that it is better to mind the Muslim culture and present yourself publically as the locals do.
